1 Engine Stall problem of the 2020 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 04/12/2024

This vehicle recently had a new engine and new transmission installed into it in February of this year. Less than 10k miles on it. The engine light came on on 4/12/2024 and I took it back to the dealer immediately. They called me on 4/15/2024 stating that their engineers and techs had had problems on the transmission recently installed on it due to manufacturing and/or faulty parts, and to replace that transmission with a new one. Still waiting to get the vehicle back at this point in time.

Engine completly stalled while driving, was parking in a parking garage, and was driving up on an incline to park and my car just stalled and all warning lights came on. No warning lights were present prior to, and all power was still on. I was stuck in the middle of the lane, blocking cars in. I was able to turn the car off and restart it and it started up with no warning lights and as if nothing just happened. I do not feel safe driving this car and will be having it inspected immediately.

4 Engine Stall problem of the 2017 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 09/01/2021

My 2017 Hyundai Elantras steering becomes extremely hard to steer, then the engine stalls out and the dash lights come on. I'm frighten of crashing when this happens. I restart the engine and the steering returns to normal. The cause is a damaged electronic power steering (mdps) connector. There was a recall (#161) for a replacement electronic power steering motor at no charge for this year make and model vehicle but I'm told mine was not included in that recall?.

5 Engine Stall problem of the 2017 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 05/08/2021

A few months after getting the car the engine kept stalling the engine light would only turn on after stalling each time I have brought it to multiple Hyundai dealerships they keep saying it's just a spark plug issue. It's frustrating since once off the lot a week later it's randomly stalling again. This never fixed the issue. The car has stalled both on roads, roundabouts and freeways causing me to nearly be in crashes multiple times, I do not feel safe driving this car. The car is in motion and the engine just stops the car stalls and then the engine light comes on. I had been able to start it and get it moving it's random when the engine stalls. Today I took it to another car repair center they said the engine had a ton of metal particles and chunks, like the engines on the 2014 Elantras. They suggested I file a report to the NHTSA and bring it to the dealership as there is no way a engine or piston should look this bad and that the metal pieces look like they are from the manufacturing process. I'm not sure why the dealerships never checked the engine completely regarding this issue they could have seen the metal fragments earlier. I'm worried that I won't be lucky on the road next time the engine stalls and I'm worried about others having the same issue. I'm worried about my safety and others when driving. Please do not hesitate to contact me regarding more information.

6 Engine Stall problem of the 2016 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 11/10/2020

On November 10, 2020, I was driving down the highway, and my car out of the blue started knocking. As I kept driving about 1/2 mile the knocking got worse. I had to pull over on the side of the road, when I did, my engine quit and stalled. I was able to start it back up, but it continues to knock. The car is not fixable, there are no motors available for the car, as Hyundai has stopped making 2016 motors. Im stuck with a 12k loan on a car that I can not drive.

8 Engine Stall problem of the 2015 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 07/29/2019

The engine on my car stalled while driving on the highway. I was able to pull over and get it started again. I turned around to go back home and it started knocking and stalled again. After that, it would not start again. I had it towed to a repair shop who said the engine was seized. They were able to get it started again but it was knocking loudly. I ended up having to replace the engine which cost close to $6000 for a used engine. I had close to 127,000 miles on the car (I drive 100 miles per day for work) and Hyundai would not help since I am out of the warranty mileage.

10 Engine Stall problem of the 2013 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 03/01/2019

Engine stalled on me. Every time I press the gas pedal it jerks. Sometimes when I start the car it won't start. Also if it takes a while to start it will stall the whole time while driving. I can press on the gas pedal but it will drive like 1 mile per minute. I can hear the engine roaring, but it just won't move. I took it in to Hyundai they fixed it, but now my car is starting it again. I recently got on the freeway and right when I pressed the gas peddle it jerked and the engine light came on. Now it's starting to do the same thing taking a while to start, and stalling out of nowhere. I can also hear almost like a knock and the gears shifting when I'm driving, when I stop and go I can hear everything. I'm afraid to go anywhere far in my car because I never know what's going to happen. I think this engine need to be assessed because this is not normal at all.

16 Engine Stall problem of the 2014 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 04/19/2017

Had an issue with the engine stalling at low speeds or complete stop. This would happen on city streets. It happened several times over a period of days. I took it to a mechanic friend and he said it was something to do with the power brakes putting air into the engine so I replaced the booster. The next time I went driving it did it again in about an hour. Took it to a mechanic who sent it to vandergriff Hyundai in arlington, texas. Their diagnoses was that it needed a new timing chain and other parts associated with the timing chain. With all the expenses involved the mechanic said he could get a used engine for just a little more than he could fix the timing chain for but still much cheaper than the dealer would to replace just the timing chain. I had the new engine installed but transmission stopped working after about 8 hours of driving. Then I had the transmission replaced. This mechanic was not a highly skilled mechanic. Long story short. Attempting to get the stalling problem fixed. I had a new engine installed, a new transmission, and another engine. The mechanic lost the ambient temperature sensor so the a/c wouldn't work. The humidity built up in the car during a rain storm. I couldn't see and got stuck in high water blowing out that engine. Now it was cool so I didn't need the a/c. But when the weather got warmer I went to another mechanic and he replaced the ambient temperature sensor so the a/c would work. But now the car is stalling again. Same problem. So the diagnosis by vandergriff Hyundai was obviously incorrect and it looks like others have had this same problem.

21 Engine Stall problem of the 2000 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 02/23/2006

I have had an intermittent low-speed stalling problem with my 2000 Hyundai Elantra for a long time. Finally I recently had a technician drive the car for a week, and he was able to duplicate the condition and the dealer suggested replacing the throttle position sensor and then after giving them the ok on doing it, they installed the part, only to tell me later to do a very expensive repair (over 1,700 dollars for replacing the wiring harness). Having paid for the throttle position sensor, I began driving the car again. I not only noticed no improvement at all in the performance of the car, the performance was actually worse. I tried to get the dealership service department to stand by their repair, but they wouldn't. In "recalls" on my computer I found that there was a stalling problem for all models of 2000 Hyundai Elantras identical to the one I have been having that created the risk of a crash, however my VIN number was not included in the recall. The recall information on the internet states with regard to the cause of the problem: ". . . Stalling could occur if the maf (mass air flow) sensor electrical signal is interrupted as a result of engine vibration transmitted to the maf sensor connector wiring harness. " I have been told that in such cases where the same problem is a serious issue and some VIN numbers were not included in the recall, that they are often then added to the VIN numbers in the recall. I would appreciate your consideration of including my VIN in this recall based on the foregoing. My VIN is kmhjf35f6yu891722 the site I went to on the internet under service - recalls gave a campaign number of 00v259001 and listed the faulty components electrical system: wiring, and the potential consequence " this condition can cause the engine to stall, increasing risk of a crash. " and the corrective action " dealers will re-route the maf sensor connector wiring harness. ".
