Vehicle Speed Control Problems of Hyundai Elantra - part 2

When driving at 55mph with cruise control on, the car suddenly accelerated to 75mph, this happened on the open road and was able to keep under control. Auto has less than 10,000 miles. I will be contacting Hyundai customer service for a case number on this incident. First indication of a problem was cruise control, auto braking failed iin June of 2023. This follows a replacement of defective front radar unit by Hyundai which was replaced at 8295 miles on July 26, 2023. This problem first occurred in late June/early July of 2023. There was no warning.

The contact owns a 2023 Hyundai Elantra. The contact had received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 23v589000 (electrical system, vehicle speed control) and had the recall work completed by a dealer. The contact stated while driving at approximately 60 mph and using the cruise control, she had momentarily disengaged the cruise control to slow for traffic. The contact stated when she reengaged the cruise control the vehicle independently accelerated to nearly 100 mph. The contact was able to slow the vehicle by tapping the brakes. The contact stated the failure became a recurring failure. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The contact had contacted the local dealer where the recall work had been completed but was advised that she would have to wait until December 16, 2023 to take the vehicle in for service. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 18,000.

Car has a ticking sound, car has died on me multiple times. The vehicle has stopped moving regardless of pressing on accelerator and died leaving me stranded, feeling unsafe. I have been driving at 40 mph and then seem to lose power, making it to where can only go 10 to 20 mph or totally dying. I was also having issues with key fobs not working. Door would open, unlock and then not, car stalling. No lights illuminating on dash. Battery in fob replaced after car being towed to shop after stalling, dying issue and I was basically told they didn't know what was up with the stalling, maybe fobs. I had an oil change done and full diagnostic, sent on way without answers. Happened again, electrical issues, fob not working, stalling, start hesitation and dying, no power. I had it towed to different shop and was told had couple of codes showing up even though no check engine light on, they stated a caliper was leaking along with other oil leak and crankshaft sensor needed replaced, which got fixed. The car has 98000 miles on it (around there) and I see safety recall posted. I finance this car and have literally only had it not even 5 months. I do not feel safe driving it. I've been stranded, at times key fobs and locks act up on it still, the ticking is definitely a concern, rpms off and revs up at times while also lacking pick up and go. I contacted my local Hyundai and they stated no resolution on safety recall yet, can schedule an appointment and pay for diagnostic, which would make my 3rd diagnostic over the last month or so. I need something remedied. I transport myself and at times my children and I do not feel safe in this vehicle which again purchased just about 5 months ago from car max. Help please!.

One day I was on the highway driving and the front collusion safety warning appeared. I thought the warning went off because the sensor was dirty due to dead bugs. However, I pulled over and the sensor did not appear dirty. After awhile the sensor went off on its own. Then a few weeks late the front collusion safety warning appeared again while I was driving on the highway. The warning has not fixed itself. I cannot use my cruise control. I took it to the Hyundai dealership and they told the me senor is off alignment and it will cost $500 to repair because they have to remove the entire bumper. I have seen on Hyundai forums this is a common problem.

While driving down an interstate at approximately 58 miles per hour, I turned on the cruise control and went to adjust it to 65 miles per hour. The car rapidly accelerated and it appeared on the dash that the cruise control defaulted to 110 miles per hour, which appears to be the maximum on the system. I tried to turn the speed down, but the cruise control would not go below 110 miles per hour. I immediately deactivated cruise control and continued to drive at normal speed. I tried multiple times thereafter to set cruise control, and it would again, rapidly try to accelerate the car to 110 miles per hour and would not let me decrease the speed. After stopping at a rest stop, turning the car off and on and driving again, it appeared the glitch was fixed and I was able to operate the cruise control normally. Please note that the "adaptive" part of the cruise control, including steering assist/lane departure worked fine the entire time.

I turned on cruise control at 60 mph and it immediately set itself to 20 mph, braking fast to slow down quickly. This caused the car behind me to slam on his brakes so he would not rear end me. I tried increasing cruise control speed to no avail. I had to turn it off. Once I did not have any cars behind me, I tried once again so I could take a video and of course, it worked as it should. Not five minutes later, my radio turned the volume down to zero, all by itself. 20 minutes later, when I slowed to turn into a parking lot, my car lagged and acted as if it didn't have gas enough to go up a small incline. Pressing on the gas pedal didn't do very much but I made it up the incline and was able to park. I will be calling Hyundai dealership tomorrow where I purchased the vehicle last year. I do not have any type of pictures or recordings as it just happened and it was a pretty scary event considering I was almost rear ended.

I have 2014 Hyundai Elantra it unsafe to drive put in drive it wouldn’t go forward . It jerky hard to go. Failure of light. Transmission. Steer clutch shaft.

My Hyundai Elantra is a lemon. I have been having accelerating problems, stalling problems fresh from the lot even before 5,000 miles with my Hyundai not accelerating took it to dealer said nothing is wrong with it 5 years ago. It still continues to stall on me! it broke down on me twice in two days in a row. One on 8/8 and 8/9! could have killed me or others if I took it on the highway. My car has been stalling and I had to pump the break to rev up the engine at the same time while turning! could have killed us! I am sitting in a lemon! it is not safe on the road at all!! I lost my job because of this and the time it took me to try and get a rental. Hyundai won't let me get a loaner car! I cannot afford uber all the time. All the lights are on. Check engine light too and airbag light. My transmission seems to be slipping too and the double clutch. Crank and cam shaft problems! headlightw are very dim too. Airbag weight front seat sensor is turning on. Engine is stalling. Slows down! will not accelerate after 60mph goes super slow down to 55 mph up hill. I want Hyundai manufacturer to pay or I am getting a lemon lawyer and contacting the bbb and the state of arizona.

Drove about 1 hour using cruise control part of the time. Don't usually use it, but used it 2 months ago with no problem. After 1. 5 hour visit, drove home. Did not use cruise control, but at last 10 minutes acceleration issue started where car would "rev" even though I was not accelerating. Able to manage it with brake and normal driving. Tried to reset cruise (turn on/off), but car still had episodes of "revving". Did not accelerate to dangerous level and controllable. After car sat in garage for 2 hours, I drove out of neighborhood to empty stretch of road and accelerated to 50 with no problems and no revving of engine. Service check scheduled.

While driving at any speed, vehicle momentarily does not respond to any gas pedal input. Driver presses on gas pedal but no change in speed, no rpm change no warning lights on dash. After a few seconds vehicle responds again randomly. Puts driver at danger due to not being able to same speed as traffic very dangerous!.

I think my transmission is messed up because my car stalls to go and my rpm jump up to 4/5 after I accelerate.

Horn has failed twice. The first time it was taken to the dealership and “fixed” - now it has failed again. The second issue is that the car accelerates on its own, both at a high and low rate of speed. While traveling at approximately 60 mph on multiple occasions, when the engine transitions from the electric motor to the gas engine, it will suddenly rapidly accelerate without any additional pressure on the gas pedal. While braking at a low rate of speed, the car seems to fight the brakes and will accelerate instead, propelling the car forward. This has almost caused multiple accidents. At the first occasion (Mar 2023), the dealer did a “transmission relearn” which mostly fixed the issue, but it has aggressively returned only 3 months later (one week ago) and is extremely dangerous. While trying to move to the side of the road and stop the car, the car continues the stop-go jerking/propelling forward and is nearly uncontrollable. The vehicle is currently at the dealership again and has not been diagnosed. On the first occasion they claimed they could not reproduce the issue. There is an open case with Hyundai regarding this. There were no warning lights or signals on the vehicle.

We own a driving school. My husband was giving a road skills test for a student in our 2018 Hyundai Elantra. For unknown reasons the car rapidly accelerated. He told the driver to get off the accelerator. She said she was not on the accelerator. He looked over and her foot was on the brake. We have an instructor's brake and by pressing it my husband was able to overpower the Elantra accelerator they missed another car by inches, but he was able to stop the car. They continued down the road and the car's rpms where high. He tested the car by putting the transmission in neutral, the car revived but the student's foot was on the brake. They continued to the office using the instructor's brake to control it. After the car was shout off and restarted it never had this same issue. We just brought it to the dealership for inspection of problem. Our mechanic looked at the car but could not find a reason for the problem.

On June 13 2023, I received an alert on my dashboard that my cruise control was unable to be used due to an issue with the front sensor. The alert went away soon after but then reappeared on August 27th, 2023 the error appeared again. Specifically error code c162078. I wasn't able to get the issue repaired until November 2023, which is also where they replaced my faulty backup camera.

My daughter was driving the car to work. The car accelerated even thou her foot was lightly placed on the gas pedal, it was like pressing the gas pedal to race the car. This happened 4 times on her 4. 5 mile drive to work. When she was turning into the parking lot, she had her foot on the brake and the car accelerated again which scared her as she didnt want to crash into the cars in front. I read a lot of such complaints on the Hyundai forum. I talked to the dealership service mechanics and they say that they will have to replicate it. This is the first time this has happened in the last 2 years.

The contact owns a 2020 Hyundai Elantra. The contact stated that the vehicle failed to reverse. The contact had to shift to park, stop, and reverse. While attempting to reverse, the vehicle was jerking. There were no warning indicator lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer for an inspection but was not diagnosed or repaired. The dealer informed her that they do not provide service on saturdays. The manufacturer was contacted, who referred her to the dealer. The failure mileage was approximately 10,211.

Since buying my vehicle new, it has had three ignition coils fail at different times. The car begins to shudder, rough idle, not accelerate and all of a sudden just will not respond to giving it gas. This happens at any speed therefore it is a danger especially entering or exiting highways or switching lanes. It has been unpredictable. The check engine light does come on some of the time as this problem is occurring, not before. The dealer replaced the first two coils (51, 576 miles and 56, 446 miles) under the warranty. The third coil replaced (78, 391 miles), they would not cover under warranty, nor would they replace the 4th coil as a precaution.

I was driving on a 40mph speed road at 45 mph and the car stopped accelerating abruptly and remained stuck at 20 mph even thou my foot was on the gas pedal. I had to put the caution lights on and get to the side of the road. I had every car behind me honk and yell when passing by. This could have been a big crash. I have the video of this when I was driving. This happened various times, in December, Feb and last week.

While driving over the last month, the car shuts off with no warning. There are no check engine or other lights that come on once it shuts down. There does not appear to be any consistency in the occurences, sometimes while idling, sometimes while driving 40 mph. Up until recently, the car would restart once I put it in neutral, but it now does not restart right away.

The driver owns a 2013 Hyundai Elantra with 37,657 miles. While slowly turning left into a parking space, the car had a sudden acceleration event. The Elantra sped into the parking space and ran over two concrete parking spot blocks. The Elantra glanced off a grey pickup truck and scraped by a grey SUV. The Elantra entered the empty parking space opposite the SUV and proceeded to impact the side of a blue car in an adjacent spot. The blue car stopped the Elantra. Fortunately, the other affected vehicles were unoccupied and no pedestrians were present. The driver was wearing a seat belt and was not injured. The Elantra air bags did not deploy. The vehicle was towed to the driver's residence and is available for inspection along with all maintenance records. A claim has been filed with insurance; the appraiser came yesterday. There was no warning or symptoms of a problem prior to the accident. The problem has not been reproduced or confirmed by anyone. The police came and helped identify the owners of the other vehicles.

I was driving the vehicle normally down the highway. When I exited the highway, I came to a stop light and made a complete stop at which point the engine stalled. I restarted the vehicle, the check engine light appeared, but I couldn’t get it to register any rpms and I was left stranded in a busy intersection until help arrived.

Car will accelerate when pressing on brakes. Once car is able to turn off, the problem does not repeat. This has occurred at least 3 times with the same car and random times while on the road. Dealership is unable to replicate the brake issue every time the car is brought in.

Clockspring has failed . Hyundai has extended the clockspring warranty for 2011 to 2014 Elantras to a 15-year unlimited mileage but has excluded the 2010 models for some reason. I would like Hyundai to extend the warranty to all affected vehicles as it is a safety hazard.

Driving on highway, dashboard reported "check forward safety system" and "check Smart cruise control system". The car then disabled both while I was driving. This has happened 6 times to me. The first time I brought it to dealer and they stated it was a calibration problem. They reset it and I had no problems for a while. The problem has occurred 5 times more and will stay on for about a week or so and then just go away. It works again and then occurs again. So, it is intermittent and recurring. Each time the diagnostic code reported by the software to my phone is c162078. I see the 2018 kona had the same exact problem and a software update TSB was put out there. . Read more...

My Hyundai Elantra started completely shutting off while I was driving. This happened on multiple occasions like in slow traffic and while going high speeds on the highway. This is scary and dangerous when my toddler child is in the car. I took it to 3 different mechanics and no one can find any codes or anything wrong with it---but it continues to happen and put my life and my daughters life at risk. I have seen so many people complaining of the same thing--but nothing has happened? this last dealership has had my car for 3 weeks (and counting) but still cannot find the issue. I have about 125,000 miles on the car.

My car will stall randomly at stop signs and red lights with absolutely no warning. It’s super dangerous and has almost caused a wreck. I have taken it to mechanic and no codes are being thrown and it’s showing nothing is wrong. It’s a matter of time a accident happens and someone gets hurt. I would definitely like to figure this out!.

The contact stated that while driving at highway speeds, the forward collision avoidance: automatic emergency braking brake light illuminated, and the vehicle experienced phantom braking, causing the tires to skid and the speed to abruptly decelerate. Moments later the forward collision avoidance: automatic emergency braking light turned off, and the vehicle operated normally. The failure had occurred on several occasions. Additionally, the vehicle had experienced unintended acceleration, causing the vehicle to lurch forward. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer who was unable to determine the cause of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of failure. The failure mileage was 1,500.

While driving in stop and go traffic this morning (02/06/2023), at approximately 8:45 am, my Hyundai Elantra began accelerating on it's own. I applied the brakes and the car behaved as though I slammed on the brakes. The acceleration and braking issues happened multiple times during this drive. After the first incident, I shifted the car into neutral, (when it happened subsequently) until it quit accelerating, which was a couple of seconds. I have scheduled service at the Hyundai dealer for tomorrow morning (02/27/2023).

On 2/3/2023 I started my vehicle like normal drove approximately 2 miles to the store , during the drive my the vehicle was accelerating uncontrollably, more than I was driving normally. I then hit the brakes and it did slow down . Upon arriving to my destination I then tried to park my vehicle and applied the brakes and my vehicle kept accelerating and moving I then placed the car in reverse which stopped the motion. I then placed the car back in drive and went home . Then car still was accelerating uncontrollably so I kept my hand over the emergency brake for emergency use if needed . Upon arriving home the engine light came on.

At any given time without warning the car dies. There is a red light that is sometimes visible on the dash but flashes too quickly and tell which light it may be (due to location of light owner’s manual showing possible oil light/battery). The car has had regular scheduled maintenance. This happens when driving in everyday traffic and sometimes when going from stopped to accelerating. This happens when going in reverse or ahead. I have almost been in several different accidents due to it dying in the middle of intersections. Code reader has not been able to locate the problem because there’s no indication of a problem on the check engine light. This is a very serious problem that needs to be taken seriously before it gets someone badly injured or killed.

The cruise control will automatically set itself to either 20mph or 120mph when engaging it as usual. This happens with no common circumstances that I can see, but as it has happened over 10 times and I have only had the brand new car since Aug 31 2022 and the dealership does not seem concerned about it, I though I should report it to you. It has put both myself and others at risk, as the first time it happened, the car began to accelerate as fast as possible and the digital readout on the dashboard had the cruise control set for 120 mph and I almost ran into the car ahead of me. I have taken it to schomp Hyundai in aurora, CO and they were unable to reproduce the issue and no codes came up, with the exception of the lka, which they did not deem a problem. This happens regularly and the only recourse is to pull over and restart the car. This first occurred around 20,000 miles and continues to happen without any rhyme or reason and makes me feel unsafe in my first brand new car. Thank you for taking the time to read this and I hope if this is happening to others, that Hyundai will be made aware of it and remedy the problem before someone get seriously hurt.

After driving the vehicle for about 5 miles I stopped to make a left turn and when I let off the brake and pressed the gas pedal the car crept forward but wouldn't speed up and the gas engine wasn't starting or even cranking. After about 20 to 30 seconds to gas engine started and the car drove fine for about 15 miles then I went to slow down and the car speed up on it own and the adaptive cruise control was off. Then it drove fine for a few more miles then I stopped at a red light and then began to make a right turn and the car did the same as before. It crept forward and the gas engine wasn't starting or even cranking. Then after 20 to 30 seconds the gas engine started and I was able to speed up some but then the engine would rev up but the car wouldn't speed up. It seemed like the transmission wasn't engaging. The car was parked for about 8 hours and then drove to the dealership without any issues. The service department at the local Hyundai dealership looked at the vehicle and test drove it without any issues.

Our problem started a few months ago. At first, we thought it was just a fluke, but this issue has happened too many times to be so. The issues are, the car does not accelerate when we depress the accelerator, we see the tachometer move, but the engine is not actually accelerating. Then at times it will accelerate on it's own, while sitting at a red light, the car tries to move forward despite having our foot on the brake, it acts like we are trying to push the accelerator and the brake at the same time. Even worse, while driving, the car will go into accident-avoidance mode, even though there is nothing in front of us. There are no errors or codes populating on the dash.
