Failure Date: 01/24/2025

Car will drift under acceleration to the left really hard then go straight when let off the accelerator scary feeling and all suspension parts look ok no one can figure it out and is scary.

2 Steering problem

Failure Date: 12/11/2023

The contact owned a 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe. The contact stated that while driving at about 35 mph, the steering wheel locked up while steering on a winding road; the steering warning light had also appeared on the instrument panel. The vehicle began to veer to the right as the contact forcefully steered the vehicle back to the left to avoid hitting a fence. The vehicle then spun into the opposite side of the road before hitting a curb. Once the vehicle hit the curb, the vehicle flipped three times before the vehicle came to a halt. All air bags deployed during the accident. A police report was filed(#89735171). The vehicle was initially towed to an independent mechanic but was later towed by her insurance for an investigation. All three passengers were taken to the hospital by a family member were they were treated for various injuries. One passenger sustained temporary ringing in both ears after the accident and the other passenger suffered temporary back pain. The contact sustained a head injury and a muscle strain to both their neck and back. The manufacturer had yet to be notified of the failure. The vehicle was deemed a total loss. The failure mileage was unknown.

3 Steering problem

Failure Date: 09/22/2023

The contact owns a 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe. The contact stated that while driving at 35 mph, the vehicle had lost power slowing the vehicle down. Check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was towed to a dealer to be diagnosed. The vehicle had been diagnosed. The contact was informed that the failure was due to a faulty rod bearing. The vehicle had not been replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and determined that the VIN was not included in a recall. The failure mileage was approximately 119,000.

4 Steering problem

Failure Date: 02/14/2023

On February 14, 2023 while driving steering wheel broke (steering component failed) and had to stop at nearest repair station and was told not safe to drive. It was making clicking noise when turning wheel and backing out of a parking space. Next day had it towed to Hyundai and said the steering component in dashboard fell and metal crash bar was completely broken. They suggested I go through my insurance company because they didn’t know how it happened and said it was from a road hazard or pot hole I hit, but that was not the case and the insurance investigator did not see any signs of a collision and said it was probably a faulty part. What concerns me most is that if I was driving at high speeds on a highway it could have been very dangerous to loose my steering and cause a bad accident. I’m not sure how long my steering wheel was broken because I did hear noises but just thought it was the steering adjustment bar wasn’t in the lock position. It’s very disturbing to think I could have gotten killed. Hyundai doesn’t seem to want to acknowledge that it could be a manufacturer default and a safety issue on there part because the car is out of warranty. They don’t what to tell me what caused the problem of the steering column to fall and the metal bar to break. I’m the original owner and the car is kept in excellent condition with no neglect for this safety issue to happen for no apparent reason is very concerning. The repair fix the problem will cost $5,000. I did research the issue and found that there was a safety recall for faulty steering columns on 2017 Santa Fe models and could cause a bad accident. I would like to report this issue and find out if anyone else reported the issue with their 2013 model. I would like to know if the following recall on the 2017 Hyundai santafe could be somehow connected to my steering column issue: recall 173. Nhtsa campaign number: 18v11800.

5 Steering problem

Failure Date: 12/14/2022

The car started to make a clicking sound coming from the steering wheel whether straight or turning. The wheel was shaking and there was some wiggle with steering. I was hours from home and did not feel safe driving the vehicle. Left it at a non-Hyundai repair shop. Was told the next day it was an issue with the plastic coupler in the steering column and Hyundai had a recall on it. Drove it home and brought it to my local dealer where we have all our repairs done. Was told there's no recall. After reading the exact same complaint by so many people on here and other online places I was shocked there was no recall for this issue. Others have stated Hyundai did recalls on some of their other vehicles for just this part/problem.

6 Steering problem

Failure Date: 08/09/2022

August 2020 , dealership repairs under under warranty 'steering coupler' . Wheeling when engine on making 'clunky' sound, and vibrations . Hyundai has current recalls on other makes and models of their line, but not 2013's , or my year and model this is a safety issue. Please advise Hyundai to extend and issue a recall the dealerships wants hundreds of dollars to repair.

7 Steering problem

Failure Date: 02/14/2022

Hyundai has a problem with the steering coupler in numerous vehicles, including our Santa Fe. Problem is caused by deterioration of the plastic coupler between the electric power assist motor and the steering column. Hyundai has not recalled this item on other Hyundai models, but is doing an extended service repair for 15 years unlimited mileage if you bring it in and ask for it to be fixed. However, they are not doing this for the Santa Fe, as they say "they are not seeing a problem with this model", even though it has the same defective part that is being replaced in other Hyundai models. My vehicle is showing signs of this defect and has a definite "bad spot" in the steering when you drive the vehicle. It is very dangerous and will lead to loss of steering control if it is not fixed as soon as possible. However, Hyundai, at the dealership level and at the Hyundai north american level refuses to acknowledge that there is a problem with the Santa Fe, using the same parts as the other models that they admit have a defect. There have been no repairs of modifications to the steering system of this vehicle. It was purchased new and used as a daily driver since purchase in may of 2013.

8 Steering problem

Failure Date: 12/01/2021

I own a Hyundai Santa Fe 2013 GLS, at about 78,000miles. There is currently a loud clicking noise that occurs when you turn the steering wheel, also steering wheel vibration when you apply the brakes. There is a play when you turn the steering, from my review and research, it is caused by a disintegrated rubble coupler in the steering motor. I called Hyundai customer support, and also when to the dealership, and I was told that it is not covered under warranty. This seems to be common problem with a number of Hyundai cars. I expect that Hyundai to announce a recall on this as its a safety issue, rather, they don't seem to care.

9 Steering problem

Failure Date: 11/01/2021

The contact owns a 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe. The contact stated while his wife was driving at unknown speed, the steering wheel was loose. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The driver was able to continue driving to her residence. The contact took the vehicle to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed with needing insulator pad for the power steering to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 25,000.

10 Steering problem

Failure Date: 10/04/2021

The mdps (motor driven power steering) assembly contains a flexible rubber coupling which wore out and causes a “thud” type noise when turning the steering wheel. Steering is affected by this. Problem has ben reproduced by service center.

11 Steering problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2021

Our 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe had a steering coupler failure at about 35,000 miles that resulted in a loud clunking sound in the steering wheel and less responsive steering, which is unsafe. Hyundai and kia have extended warranties for many of their models for this exact same problem, but for some reason they have not offered extended service for the Santa Fe. I believe the defective coupler that very commonly falls apart is identical to the one in the vehicles that did receive extended coverage.

12 Steering problem

Failure Date: 03/15/2021

Steering wheel seemed to have play in movement. Later developed thumping and knocking when driving, especially when driving on bumpy roads. Attendant at dealership made an appointment for two weeks later stating it could be the steering coupler and there may be a recall. She did not confirm the car may be unsafe to drive. I have not received a recall notification from Hyundai. Problem began in March 2021 and continues. Repair is due today at dealership.

13 Steering problem

Failure Date: 08/23/2020

While driving at varying speeds, while going over speed bumps, turning corner, more noticeable at slower speeds, is a clicking noise & almost feels like a momentary lose of control of the steering. Not sure if it has to do with adaptable steering (sport, comfort, normal) control's, or the main controls of the steering.

14 Steering problem

Failure Date: 07/27/2020

While driving to work from my residence, I began hearing a clicking sound when turning my steering wheel, as well as experiencing extensive "play" in it as well. This made it difficult to maintain my lane on the highway, which has very close traffic, and made response to my steering actions seem delayed because of said play. Even on normal city, surface streets, it was not handling correctly, and took effort to maintain my designated lane, as well as making turns and response to other traffic where my steering was pertinent. The issue progressively worsened to the point I was afraid to drive it. I researched the issue and found that it is not an isolated incident in Hyundai vehicles, as well as their kia vehicles. I could not find a recall, but did see where they extended the warranty on kia vehicles to address the problem and avoid the recall. So why not on the Hyundai vehicles affected with this safety problem.

15 Steering problem

Failure Date: 04/01/2020

1. Speed sensor- replaced by recall and continue to fail. 2. Rear glass in hatchback, just broke origination from wiper hole in glass while the car was occupied sitting not moving a a parking lot. 3. Steering rattles because a shock damper wears out prematurely. 4. Seats- electric control button contacts tarnish with use and quit working.

16 Steering problem

Failure Date: 12/17/2019

Lots of lateral play (clicking sound)in steering even when not driving. While driving steering shakes violently.

17 Steering problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2019

Tl- the contact owns a 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe sport. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds and stationed, there was an abnormal noise detected coming from the steering wheel. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer or independent mechanic for a diagnostic test or repairs. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 115,000. Dr.

18 Steering problem

Failure Date: 07/16/2019

While driving 35 mph through an intersection on a city street, the entire electrical system failed and shut off. I was unable to steer or brake, but managed to coast into a parking lot. The entire dash panel repeatedly flashed and all warning symbols appeared on dash panel. Briefly the dash panel displayed connect fuel sensor before completely shutting off. We towed vehicle to dealership and was told it appeared to be a failed alternator and starter and compromised battery cable and sensor and wouldn't be covered under warranty. We had just had the fuel line sensor replaced under recall and now this. This is after the total engine failure and that led to the engine being replaced with what we told was a factory new engine that fell under the metal fragments in oil chamber recall. We are fortunate we were unharmed during this incident. This is extremely frustrating that we have been hit with recall after recall. We were told to not be surprised if this issue also became a matter of recall.

19 Steering problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2019

Steering is malfunctioning, clicking, loose feeling, car sways while driving. . Not safe. Hyundai ignoring.

20 Steering problem

Failure Date: 07/26/2018

On July 26, 2018 vehicle lost all power and engine began smoking and emitting flames. Car was in motion at approximately 70 mps in the middle of a tunnel on colorado interstate 70 with no pull off space. Cars behind reported flames from under the vehicle. We were able to exit without being harmed but inhaled horrible smelling fumes. Fire department personnel disconnect the battery to keep the engine from continuing to flame and smoke. Towed off interstate to safe area where they continued to monitor vehicle for continuing smoking and flaming.

21 Steering problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2018

The contact owns a 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe. While driving various speeds, the steering wheel made an abnormal clicking noise and shook violently. The contact had to hold the steering wheel tightly to maintain control of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to legacy Hyundai (443 industrial blvd, mcdonough, GA 30253) where it was diagnosed that the steering wheel needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was not contacted. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 83,000.

22 Steering problem

Failure Date: 03/24/2018

There is a rumbling noise after completing a turn, generally left hand turns. Also, during the turn, the engine oil light comes on and goes off.

23 Steering problem

Failure Date: 03/14/2018

When driving at speeds above 45 mph the car is unstable. It consistently swerves to the left and to the right forcing the driver to constantly adjust the steering. It does not matter what mode the steering is in. It does it in all three modes. It feels unsafe and unsettling.

24 Steering problem

Failure Date: 02/06/2018

Steering / suspension. I purchased the vehicle new on 01. 09. 2014 out of the showroom. About 3-4 months later, I started to notice the steering and rough ride. The steering was like a vehicle with "jimmy legs" loose and all over the road. I took it back to the dealership to get checked out. First thing it was out of alignment on the front end (left toe -0. 10d, right toe -0. 09d). They checked the suspension and told me that the components were good with no damage or wear including the struts. I told them of how rough the ride is driving at variable speeds on the local roads. Ever since, I have had 5 alignments and still have the same handling and steering problems. I took my vehicle to sears to have an alignment checked and was told the left front was out by -0. 07d. The mechanic told me that I was the 6th person with the same model vehicle to come in there in the past two weeks with the same problems. He stated that the reason for the issues are coming from the electronic steering module. When you adjust the steering wheel to on of the three settings (normal, comfort, sport), it causes the front alignment out. This to me sounds like a design flaw and Hyundai does not want to address this issue. I just get tired every time I take it to the Hyundai dealership of being told that there is no problem, it is how it is suppose to ride like that due to that it is not a car. I was at Hyundai dealership on 06/Feb/18, and that is what they told me but I had to pay another $89. 95 for an alignment again, left front was out (toe -0. 15d) right front was out (toe -0. 18d). I was told that the struts and suspension was ok, but could be the tires. I have 29,374 miles on it and I am getting tired of having to bring it in to have the same work done and being told that there is nothing wrong. I have all paperwork to use to show the alignments that were done.

25 Steering problem

Failure Date: 01/02/2018

My steering wheel clunks when turning, regardless of if it is stationary or moving. Was told it by the dealer it was a known issue with some steering wheel coupler and would be $1,500 out-of-pocket to fix.

26 Steering problem

Failure Date: 11/03/2017

Steering locks, doesn't recenter except with manual human forced correction as though the wheels were stuck in a rut (they aren't). Has happened multiple times since 2d year of vehicle ownership. Not consistent. Problem dissipated after battery failed and was replaced in 3rd year. Unknown if there is a correlation. Steering problem has recently returned. On interstate where many minor course corrections are made to stay in lane, gets very burdensome and wearying on long trips. Seems to happen at 15mph and up. Not noticeable at slower speeds. Was reported to authorized Hyundai dealer in 2015. No action taken.

27 Steering problem

Failure Date: 01/10/2017

2013 Santa Fe 2. 0t - car is unsafe to drive, the erratic steering and continuous wandering all over the highway has caused me to park my car more than I drive it. A majority of my driving involves highway speeds of at least 60mph and over which I can not achieve in this car due to its poor steering, unsafe wandering and unpredictable steering behaviors. I have had witnesses to this and actually state that it looks like I'm driving drunk. The car wanders all over the road! if it's windy outside, you might as well forget driving the car even at speeds below highway normal speeds. This car is unsafe and Hyundai knows this!!.

28 Steering problem

Failure Date: 04/25/2016

Loose bolt on lower steering shaft.

29 Steering problem

Failure Date: 02/12/2016

When driving at speeds above 45 mph the car is unstable. It consistently swerves to the left and to the right forcing the driver to constantly adjust the steering. It does not matter what mode the steering is in. It does it in all three modes. It feels unsafe and unsettling. I truly hope Hyundai comes up with a fix for this. Very dissatisfied.

30 Steering problem

Failure Date: 01/10/2016

2013 Santa Fe 2. 0t - car is unsafe at highway speeds. Car erratically steers all over the place and it's a constant fight to keep it on the road, let alone in the lane. If it's windy outside or driving anywhere near a semi truck you can forget about the safety of the car. I, along with many other owners of these vehicles have complained about this very dangerous problem. Hyundai needs to resolve this. I literally spent 35k for a car that can only be used in town. I can't even take road trips that involves going over 50mph or on highways because of how unpredictable and unsafe this vehicle is! why won't Hyundai fix this or recall this?!?!?!.

31 Steering problem

Failure Date: 10/23/2015

I was driving west on u. S. Hwy 80 at about 30 mph, after pulling out of a parking lot about 1 block before I lost control of my 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe, at an intersection. It made a sharp right turn without my help at all. After hitting another vehicle and then jumping a large curb, I came to stop about 18" from a small tree. I was completely traumatized. The right front wheel had a blow out from the outside side wall of the tire. The mechanic said it looked slashed. The big question is, did the blow out occur at the time my vehicle made the sharp right turn at the intersection, or did it occur when it hit the curb? I don't know, but I feel something happened to cause that sharp right turn in the first place. I had the mechanic check out the right front wheel area (axle, etc). They said they couldn't find anything wrong with the vehicles parts, that wasn't caused by the accident. This makes me more convinced it has to be the tire. This is the second tire that has blown out on the outside wall of the tire since I purchased this vehicle in 2013. The other blow out was from a nail going through the outside wall. I only have 11,045 miles on this vehicle. Tires are a kumho, crugen, p235/55r19, 101h sl bsw oe (information copied from a discount tire receipt when the first blow out was replaced 5-22-15). I am afraid to get back in this vehicle because I don't know what caused complete loss of control. I will trade it in on a different vehicle. I'm afraid of Hyundai's and kumho tires!.

32 Steering problem

Failure Date: 09/04/2015

While turn left into a subdivision the steering would not re-center thus the car ran over a couple of large stones lining the roadway at the entrance. The abs did not engage. Finally the car stopped about 30 feet later. I was able to finally steer the car back on to the street. There is damage to the undercarriage, the inner wheel well on the right side was torn off, the left front air dam, the exhaust system, the right front wheel was damage, and a flat tire.

33 Steering problem

Failure Date: 05/12/2015

The vehicle is a 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe sport 2. 0 turbo awd. I bought this vehicle new in Nov 2012. The vehicle has known steering issues from Hyundai motors USA. I had it in the Hyundai dealer in reno nv last month to have alignment and front steering checked out again. I have had it in the dealer to complain about my steering but they keep stating that it all checks out? it is very difficult to maintain my lane and if its windy out I have to slow down on the highway as it drifts and its hard to control the vehicle back to my lane. Hyundai knows of this problem but has not come up with a fix I have read and heard through other complaints. This vehicle needs to be recalled as it is really dangerous to drive. I paid alot of money for this car new and its my only vehicle so im hoping your agency can help fix this problem? thank you for your time on this serious issue.

34 Steering problem

Failure Date: 02/02/2015

While driving my awd santa-fe through snow. Snow begins to build up on tires and rims as due all vehicles. While having parked my santa-fe for 30-45 minutes or continually driving through snow and returning to drive said santa-fe you start to feel vibrations and then vehicle starts violently shuttering the faster u go. The snow throws off the wheel balance and makes car shutter violently. The only fix from dealer is park car in warm garage while parking or scrap inner wheels before driving. You would think any cuv/SUV with awd should not have this problem, really any vehicle should not have this problem. I guess I bought the awd to stay on clean dry roads. Defeats the purpose of an awd. Guess it will take someone crashing before looked into. My fix, buy can of never wet and spray rims and tires so no snow or ice sticks to wheels or rims or change rims more money$ but both work. Simple, complain and solution resolved.

35 Steering problem

Failure Date: 01/10/2015

2013 Santa Fe 2. 0t erratic, unsafe, uncontrollable and unpredictable steering. I have to continuously fight the steering in my 2013 Santa Fe. This vehicle is unsafe at speeds over 50mph and you can forget about driving this car anywhere on highways or windy days. The car is so unsafe that I literally can't not make plans to drive anywhere that involves highways. I literally plan to take backroads, when applicable to go anywhere besides grocery shopping in town. The tires, alignment and everything else has been churched and rechecked more than a dozen times. This is infuriating not to mention unsettling. I have been scammed out of 35k for a car that should have never been released to the public. I only wish I tested this car at highway speeds before I purchased. These unsafe vehicles are being completely ignored by Hyundai.
