I was driving down the highway at approximately 75 miles per hour on a sunny day, and I suddenly heard this huge "pop" like someone had just shot my window out with a gun. At first I thought I blew out a tire but got out and checked and there was no damage there. I kept hearing wind whooshing through the cabin of my car, and finally I opened up the fabric cover of my sunroof and my sunroof was completely blown out! there were no trucks with rocks or any other means by which this sunroof could have shattered like that. It just plain blew out on its own. I got home and checked on my computer and sure enough, there were numerous complaints about Hyundais that had defective sunroofs that just blew out for no reason.

Dear nhsta - my Santa Fe had a malfunction at 65 mph that causes the car to abruptly slow down and run in only third gear. This is a huge distraction to the driver and could easily cause an accident. The codes are p0121 and p0733 which have to do with a throttle/accelerator position sensor and a third gear ratio mismatch. I believe the way this works is the accelerator position sensor sends a signal to the electronic throttle system module which activates an ets motor on the throttle body which opens/closes the throttle butterfly damper based on a computed error signal. Upon researching this on Hyundai forums it was very apparant that this malfunction is very common and very dangerous. I searched the current recalls and this is not one of the two recalls I could find for this vehicle. But in 50% of the cases I read about it appeared that either the accelerator sensor or throttle sensor is a common failure. I really think this should be investigated. There are also some other items that can cause these sensors to see this mismatch and give the engine/transmission the fault code which causes the car to either go into "limp" mode or single gear mode. Although both are at different speeds it basically limits the car to a maximum rpm and causes it to either run in one gear or not shift above a gear, for example 3rd gear into overdrive. This seems to be a common fault that is extremely dangerous when running at or near highway speeds due to the unexpected nature of the event and the speed change and noise it can cause thus surprising the driver which may cause them to stop or pull over unexpectedly. Other malfunctions that can cause this are mass air flow sensor, fuel injector o-ring faulty and leaky intake manifolds among others. This serious issue that should be investigated and redesigned or repaired on these vehicles.

The first time I came out to start my car and looked up, there was smoke coming from under the hood and wouldn't start. I had it towed. I was informed it was the starter. The starter was replaced and approximately 6 months later, I noticed a brushing sound when I started the car. Over time it became more often. I returned the car several times to the independent auto shop. They couldn't find out the noise. In the mean time I took to a dealership and they told me it was the starter and to take it back and have it replaced. I returned to the independent dealer and they replaced, it was still under warranty. At the dealership, I was told it wasn't catching. Two weeks later it started the same brushing sound when I started the car. I made an appointment with a dealership to inspect and in the mean time the car while warming up had a brunt smell. I turned the car off and it would not start. Had it towed. The dealership put the car on a diagnostic check and put a new starter in. My car was held for 5 days. They told me oil had leaked from the starter and that was where the smoke came from and the brunt smell. Within a week the car when started had the brushing sound again. I tried to record the sound and after I started 4 times it started to smoke and wouldn't start. Had to have it towed again. It is now at the dealership waiting for a diagnostic.

In an emailed response, the Hyundai motor corporation is deflecting a malfunction and possible safety issue with its redesigned 2013 model vehicles? bluetooth functionality to wireless carriers and/or phone manufactures? equipment when it is evident that the issue is with their component(s). Issue: - at approximately the 14:45 to 15:00 minute call duration, the vehicle's bluetooth mutes the drivers? communication. This causes an undue necessity for the drivers to manually manipulate the vehicle?s components or the drivers? personal handset, to continue the communication. The type of phone and carrier determines the extent of the drivers? unnecessary action. This distraction undermines the safety benefits associated with bluetooth hands-free motor vehicle operation. Evidence: - various phone manufacturers? handsets (thru multiple carriers) exhibit the same issue. Furthermore, internet research finds the same problem being reported by different 2013 Hyundai vehicle owners. . Read more...

Fan keeps going on and off. Dealer said there is a "short in the a/c control head".
The nut that holds one of the rear lift gate struts to the body of the car came loose and we believe dropped down behind the body liner and possibly one of the rear air bags. Anyway, this allowed the rear lift gate to drop as it was only now being held up by one strut. The Hyundai dealership told us it would require removing the body liner and air bag to get into where the nut "may" have dropped to in order to secure it and re-attach it to the body of car, at a cost of $600. Since our car was out of warranty Hyundai did not feel they should pay for it, we content that this was a structural defect and has nothing to do with mileage, wear or tear on the vehicle, which by the way is in excellent condition. The dealership claims they never saw the vehicle and they never wrote any service report on it. We took the car to a local repair shop first but they said there was no way they could get into the area and did not want to try working around the air bag. Hyundai has established a case # 4999075, and after our initial e-mails, we called them and they were to get back to us with further update, but we have not heard another word from them and our first contact with them was almost four months ago. We just today sent another e-mail to their customer connect center to see if we can't get some resolution from them, at no cost to us as consumers. The dealership said they had never seen this happen before and it is a dangerous safety hazard, the lift gate will not stay up with only one strut and we must use a piece of lumber to hold the lift gate up so we can use the rear storage area. All it would take is for that piece of wood to fall out and down would come the gate with some force, but there is no other feasible way to repair the structure without a sizeable expense on our part which we do not feel is justified.

Dies in the middle if road! almost die. All the time!!!!!! dies in the middle if road! all the time!!!almost died.
Driving 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe on busy freeway with husband as passenger. Suddenly the driver side sun visor drops into my face from its corner attachment, dangling by only electrical wire. Husband grabbed sun visor and lifted up, preventing potential serious accident with surrounding vehicles. Talked to Hyundai service dealership; they refused free replacement due to being out of warranty. Gave estimate $185 plus to replace. Online complaint websites detail dozens of same defect with 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe driver side sun visor dropping from exact same location, and dealers admitting factory use of cheap plastic assembly as cause. We contacted Hyundai corporate in fountain valley, CA. They refused to initiate defective driver side sun visor recall. Said they needed more complaints to justify recall. Told them it's been 4 years, and there are already dozens of complaints. Advised them it's very dangerous not to do recall. Serious liability issues. Hyundai corporate efused to consider recall as of 02/15/11. Currently propping up sun visor until recall is initiated. Filing complaint with state attorney general office of consumer affairs.
I bought this car used from car mart less than a year ago. First my steering was very shaky. It got rapidly worse. I went through 3 sets of new tires in one year plus 2 alignments. I recently had trouble again and my car is in the Hyundai dealership in fayetteville. First the bearings were rusted in. Both ball joints were nearly out. The control arm is going out. The steering linkage and the cradle above the driveline is rusted and falling apart literally. The exhaust system the Cadillac converter is rusted apart for the third time. The spare tire holder was rusted closed and had to be broke off to get my spare out. Also the rear seat belt just stopped working . Talk about a bad day.
