2 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2009 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 08/29/2016

The passenger side air bag sensor (OCS) remains in the off position when my small stature wife (5 ft 98 lbs) rides in the passenger seat. This is a major safety concern that I would like Hyundai to correct. I read that some 2009 Santa Fe models had a recall due to this exact issue (recall campaign 105) but mine model does not seem to be included. I am not sure why but since my 2009 Santa Fe has the same problem as the recall addressed. This has been a problem since we purchased the vehicle in 2009. Our local dealership told us that there is nothing they could do. Now I see on the NHTSA website that Hyundai can update the OCS classification software. I believe Hyundai should update my vehicle's software at no charge.

11 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 04/22/2010

When my wife is seated in the passenger seat the air bag sensor will not recognize that a person is occupying the passenger seat. My wife weighs approximately 140 lbs. This has been a regular problem for the last few years and has not gone away. It is the same problem as the current NHTSA campaign (08v161000) for 2006-2008 Hyundai sonatas for which Hyundai has issued a recall. We have visited multiple dealerships and they have all told us this is a common problem with the Santa Fe, however since Hyundai has not issued a recall there is nothing they can do to fix the problem. This is a very dangerous problem as both the front and side passenger air bags will not deploy in an accident which could result in serious injury or death to a passenger. We currently own a 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe with 37,000 miles.

13 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2008 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 03/01/2009

Since I bought my 2008 Hyundai Santa Fe and pulled it off the lot the passenger side airbag does not register me. I am 5'3" 105 lbs. Rarely does it ever work and if it does its only for a minute. Took to dealership and they state there is nothing they can do about it. Lady stated she has heard complaint numerous time and Hyundai wont do anything about it. They tell you to restart the car and sit with perfect posture. This still does not work and even if it does move an inch and it turns back off. I feel very unsafe in the passenger side and I have read numerous complaints about this from other consumers. Its like Hyundai is waiting for someone to die before they do anything about it!.

14 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 09/10/2008

Hyundai Santa Fe passenger side air bag does not recognize small adult (weight 100 - 125).

15 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2008 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 05/03/2008

Passenger side air bag disengages frequently with adult in seat. Dealership says it is functioning as it is supposed to . . . . . . Not acceptable. This is not a safe situation.

16 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 10/26/2007

I bought a 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe limited 3 weeks ago. We have noticed that repeatedly and unpredictably that the passenger side air bag sensor illuminates, indicating that the air bag has turned off, while my wife is riding in the front seat. She is average size for an adult female, and there is absolutely no reason that this should occur. I find this to be completely unacceptable and very, very dangerous. This vehicle needs to be recalled and this feature absolutely has to be corrected. 12,000 of the 2005 Santa Fe's were recalled and a class action suit was filed for an airbag sensor problem and the 2007 version of this vehicle should be recalled immediately. !! this is extremely dangerous!!! unnecessary death(s) are imminent if this is not corrected.

17 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 10/01/2007

The passenger front air bag sensor located in the seat does not correctly classify my wife (130 lbs. ) as an adult. As a result, the passenger front air bag and passenger side impact air bags are not consistently activated. The "passenger air bag off" indicator light located on the dash is on at least 30% or more of the time of travel. This system is not dependable in the event of a front or side impact. There is no way to know when the system will be activated and protecting my wife. She weighs 130 pounds in body weight. I believe the sensor in the seat is poorly designed and ultimately unreliable and unsafe.

18 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 03/22/2007

I own a 07 Hyundai Santa Fe. Ever since I bough the car in October I have had trouble with the passenger side air bag sensor. When I sit in the passenger side the air bag sensor either does not sense my weight and turns the air bag off or it actually turns the air bag on, but it fluctuates between on and off. I have read the manual, and I am sitting properly according to Hyundai instructions. I have taken the car to the Hyundai dealer, and the best they could tell me was sit in the back mam. However I do not think this is a reasonable response. I have read many other complaints about the same problem, and I fee the air bag or sensor is not working properly , and this is unsafe. One of the reasons I bough this car was the safety features, and it is disapointing that those features do not work properly, and yet Hyundai will not fix it. I fear that I or someone else may be seriously injured due to this problema dn I I do not feel it is reasonable to say "well sit in the back" soemething needs to be done about this. Please take my complaint into consideration. I strongly feel there is a problem and Hyundai is overlooking this. For my safety and the safety of others we all need help to get this probled corrected.

19 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 03/01/2007

We have a 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe and have had a problem with the passenger-side air bag since the car was new, but the dealer was never able to fix it. Our dealer (phil long Hyundai, colorado springs) now says that the VIN for our car is not included in the passenger air bag recall. Is there any way to expand the cars affected so ours can be fixed - or "encourage" them to fix our car?.

20 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2003 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 01/21/2007

I was on my way home from work 1/21/2007 @07 :40 am down I 75 south @70-75 mph with no traffic on the road no items in the road and my drivers side airbag went off. I was driving in the slow lane and kept my hands on the wheel and pulled over to the side. The airbag hit my arm. I have a left upper arm contusion and left neck/shoulder sprain per my doctor . Nothing hit my car. The next day my car was towed to the dealer in ann arbor automotive . When the man put my car on the tow truck he noticed a dent under the car at the gas tank. That did not happen on 1/21/07 I did not hear or see anything. That should not set a side airbag off. The dealer statement is that what caused it. Which they are full of it. The told me it is going to cost $5500. 00 to fix. I contacted Hyundai consumer affairs and awaiting to hear back from them. This is very unsafe and this car should not be allowed on the road if airbags deploy from a rock ect hitting under the car. I find it heard to believe that they are that sensitive.

21 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2004 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 01/12/2007

We took our vehicle to gary rome holyoke for routine service and complaint of a air bag warning light on. We were told that it was a unit underneath the seat that was bad. They got the light to go off and we were told to sell or trade the car before the light came back on. We were told we were out of warranty,by less than 1000 miles and to replace this part would be in the $2000-$3000 range. They also said it was the side airbags and they were having problems with this part on other models as well. My wife was told the same by the manufacturer when she called.

22 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2005 Hyundai Santa Fe

23 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2004 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 04/26/2005

Without warning the passenger side air bag deployed. Consumer did not hit anything or run into a hole. Consumer had no indication that anything was wrong. Insurance adjuster said no sign of physical impact, appears to be mechanical or electrical malfunction. Right side air bag appears to have deployed prematurely. Dealer looked at it and told the consumer they could not touch it because of the manufacturer. Manufacturer said it was turned over to the legal department. Consumer has not heard back from manufacturer.

24 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2004 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 09/03/2004

I purchased a 2004 Santa Fe Hyundai 8-25-04. On 9-3-04 I went out of town. About 75 mi from myhome,I was driving 65 mph on I-35 and the passenger seat air bag exploded in the car. Fortunately, no one was in the seat. I did not get hit by any car, I did not hit a chuck hole or any debrie that could have been seen on the hwy. I immediately called allen samuels service dept, talked to phil and he said he never heard of that happening and to bring it into the service dept on 9-7-04 which I did. They gave me a rental car; they said the seat air bag was on back order and they did not know when it would be availabe. I had my car there for 2 weeks. They called me on 9-20 and said this was not under warranty and to turn my rental in. I picked up my car at this time. The tech told me I must have hit a small object like a piece of wood and it hit the sensor.

25 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2003 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 03/30/2004

On March 30, 2004 at 5:52 am while on my way to work, my Hyundai Santa Fe was hit on the driver's side door by a man who ran a red light. As his vehicle made impact, my Santa Fe was sent into a roll-over, with approximately three to four flips. My side airbags did not deploy, and as a result, I hit my head on the driver's side window. I suffered from a concussion and daily headaches, that at times were debilitating. The driver's side of the car, from front to back, was destroyed. I was unable to exit the vehicle this way, and had to get out of the car through the passenger's side with the help of a passer-by. Both vehicles were totaled as a result of the accident. I contacted Hyundai and sent them all of the required paperwork. I received a reply that stated they felt the airbags had functioned in the manner in which they were designed, and this was their final decision on the matter. I fail to see how side-air bags, not deploying in a roll-over collision, are functioning at all. When I purchased the vehicle, the dual side impact airbags were one of the selling points that the dealer used. Included in the owners manual was a pamphlet that also described the airbags, along with pictures of a car being hit in the driver's door and roll-over accidents. According to this pamphlet, the side airbags would protect you in crashes such as these.

26 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2003 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 02/03/2004

On February 3, 2004, thomas ashfield, my husband, was driving to the high school to pick up our daughter. While driving southbound toward the high school two vehicles were traveling north. The first car was traveling at a higher rate of speed than what the elements called for, hitting the second car and shooting the car into ours, broadsiding tom on his driver's side. Tom immediately heard a snap. He sustained broken ribs, a torn meniscus , and a herniated disc in his c5/c6. (his first surgery is complete, we are awaiting the second. ) the damage to the car was enough to require approximately $8,400. 00. During the accident, the side airbag did not deploy. The insurance company wanted a rapid repair. We never thought to get engineers out to look at the damage or to take pictures. We did learn that there had been a problem with the airbag and sensor from the body shop and they said they would retain the components so that Hyundai could view them. I wrote to Hyundai on April 14, 2004. A representative contacted us the first time in June and then on June 22, 2004, he called again asking for the name of the repair shop. Tom gave him the information. The representative called us back and told tom that the repair shop had gotten rid of the parts. That was a shock to us because up until two weeks ago, they told us they would retain it. (we confirmed this with them when the representative first made contact with us. ) in addition, from what the representative told tom, the story changed about the defective parts. I do not have the slightest idea of what occurred. Something is happening. I want answers. I want to know why the malfunction happened. Was this the first time or is it something that is ongoing and nobody is paying attention to. My husband sustained major injuries. We paid for safety features on a new vehicle and they did not work. What will it require for us to receive answers. . . A death?.
