Was driving about 30-35 mph on curvy back road when suddenly the steering wheel completely locked up. I slammed on the brakes and the car went into the oncoming lane. Luckily there was no traffic or it would have been a head on collision. Afterwards the steering wheel exhibited a popping/thud noise when turning the wheel. The dealership replaced the steering column assembly. Didn't fix the issue. That took almost a month. Then they replaced the rack and the intermediate shaft. That still didn't fix the sound. Now they are replacing a clock spring. They have no idea what's wrong and are just throwing parts at the car hoping it's fixed. It's been 44 days and going on 3 repairs. Hyundai says I don't meet the requirements for a buyback or exchange and have frankly been extremely rude. I will never trust this car with how this has been handled and will never be giving my business to them again.

Steering wheel has too much play and clicks when moved in either direction. This happens when first turned. Not a constant clicking sound, but rather a mechanical click inside the steering column. Per research, this is apparently due to a well-documented failure of a rubber or plastic coupler inside the electric steering module. Dangerous, and a costly repair. This happens no matter stationary or in motion.

When I drive my car there is a clicking sound from the steering column while I'm driving, turning and when I hit bumps. My car will drift left or right while driving. This is my only means of transportation.
Clicking sound in steering column when turning wheel. Sound has gotten louder and more frequent with usage. This is during normal driving/turning. Occurances started out only over severe bumps and sharp turns, now much more frequent over small bumps and slight turns, even when stationary and turning wheel. Per internet complaint sites, the problem is widespread. Appears to be a cheap plastic coupling that is failing. Started at about 75000 miles.
Steering column has started to make noise when going over lane dividers and other bumps in the road something is either loose or broken. Started around 70,000 miles. After reading other complaints (here) I'm taking it to the dealer for repair immediately.
Universal joint in steering column is loose, causing play in the steering wheel. Happens when the car is moving or stationary.
We leased this new vehicle on April 21st 2018. At the time, we did not know it had an open recall for a faulty and dangerous steering wheel/column connection. We were finally notified by the dealership 2 days after the sale on April 23rd, 2018. Atlantic Hyundai of islip, NY told us that they themselves were just notified of the recall, but through a search I located articles showing that Hyundai motors began notifying customers on March 16th, 2018, over a month earlier. My wife and two children were allowed to drive off the lot in this vehicle, which could unknowingly experience a separation of the steering wheel from the steering column while being driven. We would not have leased this vehicle if we had known about the recall and because they lied, stating that they had just gotten notice of the recall.

Very lose steering and there is a manufacture recall on thousands of these vehicles from the steering wheel actually separating from the steering column itself. Very hard to drive without swerving.
We bought our 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe sport used; it had only 11,000 miles on it. Driving home from the dealership, I noticed the steering wheel would shudder violently when I turned the steering wheel, and as the steering wheel returned to center after a turn. This makes it close to impossible to control the steering wheel, and nearly got me into a few accidents since I was unable to control the steering wheel. This suggests there is an issue with the steering column or worse; the steering rack. If there is slipping going on in the steering column or rack, it could be dangerous, as the vehicle could have difficulty steering, or lose the ability to steer completely when in drive. I have never experienced such an issue while driving any other vehicle.

The contact owns a 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe. The contact stated while driving at approximately 45 mph, the steering wheel required excessive force in order to maneuver the vehicle. The vehicle was taken toa dealer where it was diagnosed that the power steering column needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 21,000.
I was driving my 2010 Hyundai Santa Fe, the blinker switch started frantically clicking, I than heard electrical sparks from the steering column and than smoke starting coming from the steering column where the blinker shaft was located. Hyundai has had my vehicle for 2 weeks, leaving me and my 8 month old carless. The dealership and cooperate has said that they have never heard of this happening before, and has not given me a courtesy call or vehicle updates. I looked on this website, safecar. Org and indeed, I found someone who has encountered the same issue (please see NHTSA id number 10629458). I feel that this is a major safety concern and needs to be recalled immediately with the other recalls in place.

The steering on our 2014 Santa Fe went out today while trying to take a left turn at a green light prior to getting onto a major highway. The car was towed to the dealer we purchased the vehicle at and we were told we need an entire new steering column and to do this they need parts from outside of the united states. Could have been a very bad situation if it had happened a few moments later on the highway.
The steering wheel failed to lock once the vehicle was turned off.
