1 Steering problem of the 2024 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 08/19/2025

Driver assistant cruise and steering components relating to the warning system. The system notification is turned off in the settings; however, the issue overrides the setting. Cruise control and steering assist shuts off after brief but consistant warning to keep my eyes on the road. My eyes are on the road. I can do nothing to stop it from warning. It may happen up to 20 times in a distance of 9-20 miles. This has occured since purchase and occurs everytime the car is driven. While passing on interstate highways the system may shut off. Acceleration stops, steering assist shuts off. Four dealerships have seen the vehicle and a claim was issued by Hyundai America. A service manager finally, after many request, rode with me after a year of many service appointment resulting in a change of passenger facing camera. No change occurred in the system, it continues to behavior the same a prior to the camera change.

2 Steering problem of the 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 08/14/2025

I am the current owner a 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe sport. While I was driving my SUV on the highway at highway speeds at 60mph, the oil pressure and the check engine warning light illuminated all of sudden after around 1 hour of smooth ride. In the meantime, suddenly the vehicle lost motive power, the steering wheel seized and smoke came immediately. Losing motive power in running conditions and smoke coming out during failure could have endangered our lives. The smoke came out due to leakage of engine oil probably. The vehicle was stuck in the middle of the road. The vehicle was towed to the residence and then after Hyundai dealership. The dealer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 76,245 only. Before reporting to nhsta I have seen numerous complaints about high oil consumption and burnt valves on theta ii engines around 2017 santafe sport model and very similar occurrence of events happening to all while driving the vehicle on highways. Hyundai must need to provide support to this year model and make vehicles.

3 Steering problem of the 2024 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 07/11/2025

I was driving on the freeway at 70mph it was dusk. The traffic was light and I was exiting the freeway. Two lanes exit and then split each direction. There is a car next to me but is not coming into my lane and nobody in front of me. Suddenly a collision alarm starts going off the vehicle brakes and the emergency steering notification lights up on the dash and the vehicle swerves to the left almost hitting the median. After this occurred the transmission started having issues at speeds under 15mph with shifting. It would rev up to about 3500rpms then lunge.

4 Steering problem of the 2016 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 06/24/2025

My engine seized at approximately 80mph on the interstate [xxx] ). The engine light came on only after I lost power. I only avoided a multiple car accident due to quick reaction and taking an exit ramp. Police came to my stalled vehicle and helped my push it off a major road to a nearby parking lot. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

5 Steering problem of the 2015 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 06/13/2025

While parked in front of 7-11 with engine not running, the power steering attachment in the wheel well broke and released fluid on the hot engine. Patrons in sore alerted me that the car was smoking out the hood. I raced back to my Santa Fe and noticed fire. The front left wheel had turned radically after I parked it. Fire extinguishers were brought from the store. I retrieved as much as I could. My Santa Fe burst into flames and was totally consumed. The fire department came and put out the fire. Obviously, my vehicle was destroyed. 7-11 has the event on tape. I received no compensation from anyone. I had to clean up the charred remains. Why was this VIN not recalled/.

6 Steering problem of the 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 04/28/2025

The steering wheeled locked up and the dash showed error messages of check hybrid system and refill inverter coolant and car seemed to go into limp mode as I could barely accelerate forcing me to pull over. The messages and issue would go away upon turning off car and turning it back on, however the issue would eventually happen again. This has happened while driving on the highway and other various road situations without warning and making the vehicle very unsafe. I have taken my vehicle to Hyundai ourisman in bowie, maryland (the dealership where I purchased the vehicle) three times over two years and they have failed to fix the problem. They have even replaced the battery in the car.

11 Steering problem of the 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 02/17/2025

This model of Santa Fe has a defective steering column. The car rattles at the base of the steering column at the base of the steering wheel in the floor by your feet. When you go over 70 it rattles.

12 Steering problem of the 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 02/01/2025

The vehicle is making a loud clunking noise in the steering column when driving down the road. It is veering all over the road and when I hit a bump it’s very bad. It’s difficult to keep in the lane. I brought it to my mechanic who said it was most likely the electronic steering motor assembly. He said he would not drive it in its current condition. Hyundai themselves said that it would be dangerous to operate. On the complaint website I was looking on there was around 50 complaints that have been reported to the NHTSA already and the website said it would also be very dangerous to drive.

14 Steering problem of the 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 09/17/2024

The forward collision assist would intermittently disable during driving. The lane keeping assist light illuminated and would not allow me to disable it causing the vehicle to drive straight only and to make left or right turns extremely hard to turn the vehicle. This incident occurred on [xxx] and was dropped off at johnson Hyundai in wake forest on that date. After a week of no contact of a diagnosis, I had to visit the dealer and was told the steering column was the issue and needed to be replaced. I contacted Hyundai America to report this issue and currently waiting on a response from their warranty to see if they will cover all or a percentage of the replacement of the steering column since my mileage is over their 100k (113k to be exact) coverage. While I appreciate their efforts, I also feel this could have resulted in a very serious incident had my daughter been driving on the highway when this occurred. Thankfully, she was picking me from home and it happened as we drove off from our house in our neighborhood. A steering column should outlast any other part(s) of a vehicle. If not, this is a huge safety concern. My [xxx] was also in the car at the time and I cannot even imagine how I would recover if something worse were to happen while he's on board. Hopefully this reporting will keep something bad from happening to others who own this type of vehicle but failed to report it. Thank you for your time. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

15 Steering problem of the 2024 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 06/03/2024

Forward attention warning camera continues to malfunction stating camera is obscured even when not. If cruise is allowed to be engaged the camera will randomly decide it doesn’t detect your face and will hard brake to stop the car. This has happened multiple times to me, narrowly avoiding collision from behind. Hyundai refuses to address the issue because their technicians can’t duplicate the issue so they state the car is safe to drive. Camera becomes hot to the touch much like an overheating cell phone. At times camera can be covered completely and will not detect it’s obscured. This camera is a big safety hazard rather than providing any safety. Someone will die if this is not addressed-the manufacturer doesn’t seem to care to fix the issue. I’ve reported this to the dealership from the 1st week I’ve owned the car. My car has been at the dealership for this issue almost half of the time I’ve owned it. I have seen many others with the same issue in Hyundai forums-their issues have always been dismissed as not a safety issue by Hyundai as well. How can a car that will brake from a high speed or any speed for that matter be safe-just because it “thinks” you aren’t looking forward but are looking forward.

16 Steering problem of the 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 05/19/2024

On the freeway and along side another car and "emergency breaking activation" warning. Happened 2 times in a month. Car swerved but I was able to control it. I was doing about 65 mph in each case.

17 Steering problem of the 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 04/21/2024

I had a serious issue with the Santa Fe lane keeper system. I was driving on i15 in a winding portion through the virgin river gorge in relatively high traffic on a corner. I have used this feature many times in the past and expected a gentle nudge on the steering wheel. But unexpectedly the steering wheel turned hard left, almost causing a total loss of control. I am safe driver always checking for other drivers doing what they shouldn't, but I never expected my car to be the one making dangerous movements. If I hadn't had a firm grip on the wheel, I would have been out of control on a narrow bridge in heavy traffic. Am I the only one with this problem?.

18 Steering problem of the 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 04/11/2024

While driving the blind spot safety system, driver attention warning system, and lane following system malfunction at the same time, and the vehicle loses power steering. The first time this occured was in the parking lot of an elementary school in April 2024. I was driving less than 2mph and the vehicle had less than 8,000 miles on it. The dealer said they would be unable to diagnose unless they witnessed the errors. The second time it occured was in may 2024 while driving on the interstate at around 75mph. The vehicle was driven directly to the dealership who kept it for four weeks. They said the connections to the ecu were severely corroded, sanded them down, and added a water protectant. The third time it occured was a month later. The dealership has had the vehicle for two weeks with no diagnosis. Losing power steering suddenly while driving is incredibly dangerous, especially in a vehicle of this size and weight. It is difficult to control the vehicle without power steering, and in all cases there have been other vehicles/people in the area who could have been injured.

19 Steering problem of the 2003 Hyundai Santa Fe

21 Steering problem of the 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 03/01/2024

I drive a 2014 sante fe sport. I noticed a clicking noise when turning the steering wheel. Initially, I heard it once in a while. I thought it was a one-time event. The clicking noise is more constant, when making a turn while the car is in motion. Sometimes the steering wheel feels 'loose' or uncontrollable. It seems to be an issue with the steering coupler. It seems as this is a safety concern for me and others while driving.

Steering wheel sticks and will not turn or adjust until forcefully manipulated , then snaps sharply causing a change in direction of the vehicle. Dangerous to our family while driving.

25 Steering problem of the 2015 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 12/01/2023

My power steering failed without notice while driving. This has happened several times. The first time I just happened to need to pull off the highway because my 4 year old had to go to the bathroom and couldn't hold it. It went out as soon as I exited the highway and entered the parking lot. The steering became very hard and heavy to move and then just locked up. If I hadn't gotten of the highway when I did it would have happened while driving on the highway with my two young sons which could have resulted in a bad accident. I had no prior warning. It just happened unexpectedly. We thought maybe it was the battery so we replaced the battery with a brand new one but about a month later it happened again when I was backing out of my garage. I was afraid of driving it so I just parked it back in the garage. It is available for inspection. It has not been inspected by anyone yet. The problem just started about a month ago.

26 Steering problem of the 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 11/27/2023

While driving the vehicle there is a noticeable “locking or sticking” in the the steering wheel while driving. This issue is most notable at a driving speed over 35 mph. Due to the vehicle not having a steering fluid reservoir, it is not possible to see if the power steering fluid is below the recommended levels.

27 Steering problem of the 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe

My steering wheel locks up when I am driving and making turns.

28 Steering problem of the 2011 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 09/30/2023

Abs and traction control lights always on. Dealership stated a faulty right rear wheel bearing sensor faulty was the cause and needed to be replaced. This caused a problem with the abs and traction control systems. Hyundai has issued a recall for abs/traction control for my vehicle's make model year, but not my exact trim.

31 Steering problem of the 2015 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 08/30/2023

While driving at 65 mph on an urban expressway, the engine quit without warning and would not restart. This resulted in diminished steering and braking control as well as exposure near the edge of traffic on a narrow berm of an overpass bridge. Full tank of fuel, good battery, the engine would not crank or restart. All electrical accessories work fine.

32 Steering problem of the 2009 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 08/25/2023

I am having a serious issue with my car that mechanics are unable to figure out. On multiple occasions, while driving at low speed in preparation for making a turn, my car has completely shut off, making it impossible for me to steer, brake or accelerate. I lost all control of my vehicle. I noticed the ‘check engine’ and ‘battery’ lights illuminated each time, but this information, along with incident descriptions, has proven less than helpful when I’ve taken it into a shop for inspection/repair as mechanics have been unable to reproduce the event or to accurately identify the problem. This has happened on the road (at intersections and once at a traffic circle) and on two occasions while I had a passenger in the vehicle with me. I currently have my vehicle back in an auto shop because it happened most recently about a week ago. However, since the problem has yet to be successfully identified and since I feel as though this is a serious safety issue that could impact others with the same type of vehicle, I am filing this official complaint.

33 Steering problem of the 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 07/18/2023

The contact stated that he slightly swerved to the right; however, the wheels locked up, and the vehicle skidded before it came to a stop, nearly causing a crash. The dealer was notified of the failure, but the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 23v651000 (service brakes, hydraulic) which he related to the failure; however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 90,000.

35 Steering problem of the 2009 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 06/15/2023

Took my car in for repair because I was told that my power steering pump and gaskets were bad. Upon further investigation it wasn’t neither. It was the power steering hose that goes from the power steering to the racket pinion. Both of the hoses had holes in them and were rusted out. Here Hyundai upgraded the power steering pump because of problems and I was never notified about the upgrade and you cannot purchase the hoses needed you have to purchase a whole new power steering pump that I don’t need. The airbag light is on and I couldn’t even order the airbag it was on back order when asked. The seat belt on the right passenger side in the back will not lock in place due to I don’t know what. Campaign 947 the under body corrosion treatment didn’t protect what it was suppose to causing my frame and control arms to go bad. I have had to replace upper and lower ball joints more than 4-5 times since I purchase this vehicle new from the dealership.
