1 Brake Disc Caliper problem

Failure Date: 07/13/2018

The brakes started locking up going down the road not allowing the car to travel anymore and pulling to one side. Had to wait for the brakes to cool down and they still did this again. Replaced all brake calipers, rotors and pads and was fine for about 6 months and now is doing it again. Now the esc off light came on and will not turn off.

2 Brake Disc Caliper problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2017

Recurring problem with left rear brake caliper;it is probably rusting and freezes up,causing the left rear brake pad to not operate. The result is that the car only has braking on three(3) wheels. This is a clear safety hazard that the company(Hyundai) is not addressing. There have been more than 150 complaints on this issue. There has been a class action suit filed with no results.

3 Brake Disc Caliper problem

Failure Date: 03/04/2014

While driving in early rush hour traffic, another vehicle shifted lanes unexpectedly. While hitting the breaks, the vehicle "jostled" and shook and was failing to stop. After pumping the breaks I was able to regain control and barely (3-6 inches) avoid hitting anyone else. The mechanic just called to inform me that one caliper pin in the front right brakes, as well as one caliper pin in the rear left had completely froze up. This is the second time the front right has done so (first time on or around January 13, 2013). After researching this today, this is a huge safety issue with this make & model.

4 Brake Disc Caliper problem

Failure Date: 07/20/2010

2006 Hyundai Sonata rear brakes worn down at twice the rate of the front brakes. While driving without applying brakes, there is constant scraping noise from the rear brakes. When braking, the noise turns into grinding. Replaced rear brakes and rotors with new parts, and the problem still occurs. Dealership stated it is due to rust buildup on the calipers, but could not explain why new pads and rotors, and a cleaned/greased caliper did not fix the noise.

5 Brake Disc Caliper problem

Failure Date: 12/25/2009

Brakes on both of my 2006 Hyundai Sonatas often freeze during blowing snow or after driving through snow. Thus, the brakes will not allow the car to move after it has been parked, or they will inadequately slow/stop the car when braking. This occurs very frequently whenever it snows, even if it only snows a little . Somehow, I'm speculating, the snow blows into the brakes (calipers?) and makes them dysfunctional. I have read on the internet that this is a common problem with Hyundai Sonatas in the northern tier of states. The worst case happened to me during the recent 2009 christmas snowstorm in the midwest. I could only get my car to barely stop even when I was moving less than 10 miles an hours. Thank goodness I did not get into an accident. This has been going on for the past several winters, but this latest incident prompted me to notify NHTSA. Thank you.

6 Brake Disc Caliper problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2008

The contact owns a 2006 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that the rear brakes failed to work. The contact stated that the brakes needed to be replaced every 10,000 miles on average. The contact took the vehicle to a certified mechanic who diagnosed that the passenger side rear brake pads wore prematurely, the caliper was frozen, and the rotor was rusted. The brake pads, rotor, and caliper needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The VIN was invalid. The approximate failure mileage was 73,000.

7 Brake Disc Caliper problem

Failure Date: 01/17/2008

The contact owns a 2006 Hyundai Sonata. The contact heard a noise coming from the rear brakes. She took the vehicle to a dealer to have the tires rotated, but the noise continued. She returned to the dealer and they were able to hear the same noise; however, they could not identify any failures after the rear brakes were inspected. She had the vehicle state inspected and the technician could also not identify any failures with the vehicle. While turning corners, the noise worsens. The contact took the vehicle back to the dealer and they identified the failure as rusted rotors, which caused the noise. They also informed her that it was because the vehicle had not been driven often. The dealer from where the vehicle was purchased, identified the failure with the brakes and stated that the brake pads, rotors, and calipers needed to be replaced at the cost of $400. The current mileage was 17,570 and failure mileage was 15,900.

8 Brake Disc Caliper problem

Failure Date: 04/18/2007

Front brakes failed due to build-up of (salt) corrosion at 11k miles. Dealer had to grind cradles to create clearance (and lube) so calipers would engage. Dealer said vehicle would have to be brought in every year to have cradles cleaned, and this was a common problem with this vehicle! this problem was discovered after driving down steep road and rear brakes were smoking excessively, doing all the work to stop the vehicle (poorly). Rear brakes subsequently had to be replaced, worn so badly. Front brakes were like new (because they weren't working).
