The contact owns a 2008 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that the air bag warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer to be repaired under NHTSA campaign number: 08v161000 (air bags); however, the dealer informed the contact that he had to pay for a diagnostic test prior to the recall repair. The contact declined. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but provided no assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 181,000.

3 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 12/13/2022

Took vehicle to independent Hyundai factory trained technician due to air bag light. Was advised this is due to failure of occupant classification system sensor in front passenger seat. This is related to NHTSA campaign 08v161000, but technician advised my VIN was not listed under this recall. Technician advised me to contact Hyundai due to the recall and inquire if my vehicle could be covered, since leaving unaddressed could cause injury or death during collision. Manufacturer is aware of issue due to previous recall cited above. Spoke with Hyundai customer service phone line on 12/13/2022 and informed of issue, asking if the recall would cover my vehicle even though my VIN was not indicated in the previous recall. Customer service advised this could not be done. Asked customer service to file complaint about known safety issue and was given case #20713402. Customer service advised I could pay for repairs out of pocket and receive refund if recall was later issued. Action requested: expand recall 08v161000 to include additional 2008 Hyundai Sonatas exhibiting same manufacturer defect which is a risk to public safety.

4 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 11/05/2022

Air bag light is on, with defect in occupant classification system (passenger weight sensor), with OCS system lights flashing erratically with no passenger in seat. Hyundai dealer and corporation keep telling me that there is no relevant campaign related to my vehicle. There is information for "campaign 083 – 2006 – 2008 Sonata – occupant classification system (OCS) reprogramming" online. Internally labeled as 08-01-006 body electrical issue. Campaign clearly states that problem is to be fixed on individual customer basis, meaning it wouldn't show up as a official recall. Hyundai currently refuses to take responsibility.

5 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 04/30/2021

"air bag" light stays on. Passenger side seatbelt light blinks on and off. Likely a sensor issue, but seems to be a recurring problem with 2008 Sonatas.

6 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 11/21/2019

My car is at the dealership at pearson Hyundai, midlothian tpk richmond va since Nov 21 2019 for air bag recall repair. That is 3 weeks. The did not provide me with a loaner. I have spent $700 on a rental and had to turn it back in. Every time I call them, I get the run around. I can't go to work now. I am a single mother and now I only have one present for my daughter. Is this a type of complaint that can be filed with your organization?.

7 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 06/06/2018

My Hyundai Sonata 2008 GLS has airbag sign on and would not go off. The passenger seat belt sign is flashing without anybody seating on the passenger side. The dealer said my car is not being recalled they said I have to get it fixed. Even though many other owners that I checked online had same issues and their cars got fixed by the dealers at no cost because they were recalled. Plz recall my car.

8 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 05/09/2018

Srs light came on while driving when the passenger shifted slightly in the front passenger seat. Light reappears on restarts and stays on. Ocs recall was done 9/23/11, but have still had problems with this. Think the current problem is related to the cushion, but know Hyundai won"t repair a second time. Seems to be a major problem with this model from reading other reports of the same issue.

9 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 01/02/2017

Esc off light comes on randomly along with airbag warning.

11 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 07/16/2016

On July 19, 2016 at or about 1500 hours, I was driving to the store to get some food, on the way out my apartment complex, I believe my Hyundai Sonata 2008 allowed me to go about two blocks down from where I live to shut off in the street right before I approached the stop sign. I also remember hearing two weeks prior to my vehicle shut off, while driving I heard this knocking sound in my engine, I thought it was the new starter that was replaced but then a day or two later it stop making that knocking noise. I called around to find answers no one had a clue to what was going on with this vehicle. Everything was working just fine until July 16, 2016. I had this vehicle since April 17, 2009 and I can't not believe this vehicle has a major issue like this at point and time. I could deal with regular maintenance services but on this flip sided coin; not having a vehicle to crank or one that just shuts off with out any engine lights or warning is a complete mystery for me, but I think it is time Hyundai give me some answers to this problem. . . Lets also be clear there was oil and gas in the vehicle at this time of vehicle in motion shut off.

12 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2014

I am #84 having the seat belt buckle failure and the $300 repair so the air bag will work in case of a crash.

13 Air Bag problem

Hit several rural mail boxes and came to a halt against two small trees. Air bags did not employ even though there was over $7000. 00 of damage to the car.

14 Air Bag problem

The contact owns a 2008 Hyundai Sonata. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 08v161000 (air bags) and took the vehicle to the dealer for recall repairs. The dealer stated that the remedy part was on hold and they would be unable to service the vehicle. The manufacturer was not contacted. The contact had not experienced a failure.

15 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 04/11/2012

The contact owns a 2008 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that shortly after starting, the vehicle suddenly accelerated and crashed into a parked vehicle. A police report was filed and no injuries were reported. The vehicle was declared destroyed. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure and current mileage was 75,000.

16 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 03/20/2012

Airbag and front passenger light came and stayed on. On March 20, 2012 dealer stated recall took my car for a week then returned no lights. The problem came back again on August 14, 2012 and they refuse to do any further work because my 2nd owner warranty expired in April of 2012, the dealership won't even honor the parts/labor warranting their work for 1 year I was told they were supposed to do. This is bad for me because I chronically ill. I brought a extended warranty from them and after being told my all involved it would cover future airbag/seat problems they said we can't find it in the contract and are giving me the run around. I really to ill to deal with this. What can I do? who regulates dealerships when they are behaving badly.

17 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 12/01/2011

We began questioning Hyundai (tameron Hyundai in birmingham alabama) when we noticed that this light stayed on. I also read in a haynes manual that there was a recall for this problem and I mentioned it to the dealership. The service dept. Informed us that there was no recall for that problem and that it was due to the passenger not sitting properly in the seat. We recently received a recall notice for this problem from Hyundai. I contacted the dealership and was informed that Hyundai had suspended this recall due to an overload of vehicles in the process of being fixed. They further informed me that I would need to bring the vehicle in for them to look at in order to be placed on a waiting list and then a second recall notice would be sent when the recall work suspension was lifted. I informed them that I would like to be put on the recall list without taking the vehicle in "to have it looked at" to save me 2. 5 hours of driving time and a secondary wait time at the dealership. They told me they could not do that. Finally they told me that the repair would require them to remove the seat bottom and send it to California for the repair, but they would return the vehicle to me to use in the meantime. They could not give an estimate of the time the vehicle would be without the seat. This is my only car and I frequently need to use it to transport 2 adults and 2 children. This would be impossible to do without a seat, especially if the amount of time would be for longer than 1 week. Your assistance is requested in this matter.

18 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 07/17/2008

The contact owns a 2008 Hyundai Sonata. The contact received a safety recall notice for NHTSA campaign id number 008v161000 (air bags). He was informed that they would not inspect the vehicle or schedule an appointment unless his wife came with him to sit in the passenger seat. The contact spoke with the Hyundai customer assistance center and they agreed that his wife had to be present. He stated that the air bag failure was intermittent. The current and failure mileages were 2,700. Updated 09/10/08. Updated 09/11/jb.

19 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 05/15/2008

Sometimes the passanger air bag off light turns on from new to present problem has persisted and dealer ignores the situation.

20 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 10/28/2007

Driver side visor impairs visibility significantly. The visor hangs down in drivers view and stays there. We have hit our head on the visor many times, which hurts and causes more distraction from driving. We have not had luck in fixing it and do not have money to replace it due to job loss and high monthly payments. When I sit in the front passenger side, I get the "passenger airbag off" light which comes on randomly and I am way over the limit in weight for it to happen. I have sat correctly and still do as told by my dealer. (which was told to me was the cause of the light on/off randomly). The esc light comes on right after starting to drive ex. Letting off emergency brake, and placing in 1st gear. This continues for several weeks maybe a month or more, then will randomly go away. This is a danger as we rely on our careful driving and the esc which has saved us many times in our other vehicle. The paint started wearing a month after we bought the car (which we bought off the showroom floor and it only had 32 miles on it) and "warranty" does not cover it. We now have a polka-dotted car. It continues to rust and peel and makes us extremely dissatisfied with our cars looks as we were so proud to have bought our 1st brand new car. The payments are painstaking but we said, "it has such great reviews and it is a safe car for us and our son, so it's worth it" but you can not put a price on safety and there are several things that are impairing a safe drive especially when my husband has to drive 45 minutes to work everyday-yes, one way.
