36 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 11/17/2016

I own Sonata 2012 GLS with current mileage approx. 41000. I get some noise every time I turn the car left or right. When I inquired to the dealer to get it fixed, they said it was a coupling on the steering column and which seems to be common with Sonatas manufactured between 2011-13. I have to pay few hundreds to get this fixed before winter approaches else it will get worse. If this is common in Sonatas, why Hyundai hasn't recalled them yet. I do not think any other car, which is under 45000 miles experiencing this kind of problem. I am very much upset with Hyundai.

37 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 11/11/2016

When I start driving over 60 mph, the steering wheel and column starts shaking violently, as well as when I apply the brakes or go over rough/patchy road. It feels as though the steering will fall off. Car only has 82,000 miles on it. When I took it to the dealer to get it fixed, they said it was a coupling on the steering column, and they told me it was a wear and tear item. That is ridiculous, because I have had several vehicles over years, some with over 200,000 miles on them and have never experienced this. I had to bite the bullet and pay the price to get it fixed because of how dangerous it felt driving, as if at any moment I could have lost control, causing an accident. The dealer told me this is a common problem with the Sonatas, but yet Hyundai hasn't recalled them, but did go on to replace them in the newer models, as if leaving owners of the pre-2013 styles to their own devices. Not to mention, countless other problems we have had with the this particular Sonata, such as the starer going out with less than 20,000 miles on it, the constant locking of the steering wheel (to which I am afraid it will do while driving), and the radio going out with less than 30,000 miles on it. I have never been so disappointed with a company in my life.

38 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 11/01/2016

The contact owns a 2012 Hyundai Sonata. While operating the vehicle, a loud knocking noise and vibration were present from the steering wheel when turning in either direction. The dealer diagnosed that the electronic coupling inside the steering column was faulty and needed to be replaced. The failure was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 82,451.

39 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 10/08/2016

Clunking sound caused by the steering column coupler when turning or going over bumps on a city street. Steering is wiggling itself and loose.

40 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2016

Steering column has become loose when turned. Rattles back and forth when turning. After numerous stops at car repair places, finally found a place in a very tiny town who knew exactly what was wrong. This is the third car they have said yhey have repaired. Hyundai apparently knows this is an issue as this shop had to wait as the part was seriously back ordered. Fortunately they ordered extras as the owners mother has the same vehicle. Just waiting for hers to fall apart. He also showed me the new part(cog wheel) ad an old chewed up one off a repair. Hyundai needs to issue a recall and reimburse all who have paid for the repair.

41 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 08/06/2016

Last week, my power steering suddenly stopped working while driving on a city street making it very difficult to maneuver. The eps dashboard trouble light as well as the airbag and esc lamps all illuminated at the same time. Thankfully, there was light traffic at the time so was able to pull off to the side to regain my composure. Using extreme caution, I drove the next few miles back home carefully avoiding any sudden situations where I was forced to make sharp turns. I had an extremely hard time steering. Yesterday, I took the veh into the local dealership. After a couple of hours, they said the steering column had to be replaced and that somehow it was also causing all the other unrelated trouble lamps to light at the same time!. Approx. $1200 repair cost. The veh is 2012 with 82,000 miles. I asked if it was covered by the 100k mile warranty. They said no. After only 4 years of owning this car, I can't believe the steering column broke. I never heard of that before. I went on-line and noticed that 2011 Sonata's had a similar problem the year prior and as a result, there was a national recall to rectify the problem by replacing faulty equipment. I can't help but think that perhaps the same faulty equipment was perhaps installed in some of the 2012's also.

42 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 08/04/2016

The contact owns a 2012 Hyundai Sonata. While driving various speeds, a loud knocking sound was heard coming from the steering column. The contact stated that the air bag warning indicator illuminated. The dealer diagnosed that there was a loose rod in the steering column. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 148,000.

43 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 06/17/2016

I was driving my car and the steering wheel started to violently vibrate and shake up/down and in and out of steering column at 65 mph (not left to right when steering). It also made a clicking noise and vibration within the steering column when turning the car even when slightly correcting. I took it to Hyundai and they fixed the the issue saying it was "common". They have had a recall on the vehicles manufactured in 2011. I had to pay for the same issue/loaner/and other fees. This is a safety issue that Hyundai needs to fix for free for their consumers. I have complained to Hyundai and requested a refund but I have not heard from them.

44 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 02/16/2016

My Hyundai Sonata has had a really loud and annoying rattling sound coming from the steering wheel since maybe last year. It started out little to no noise at all and now almost a year later, even driving causes it to rattle. If I hit a bump, it's so loud that it scares my passengers. I have also noticed that I am unable to, at very random times, keep control of steering for a second or two. This is getting too dangerous for my comfort! I have called Hyundai on this and they have told me that this issue is with the steering column and that it is a recall item for 2011. This should be extended to 2012 as well. A video can be emailed or uploaded upon request.

45 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 11/01/2015

Steering column has started making a knocking noise when turning left or right. From what I have read, there are many other individuals with this same problem. I don't have $300 plus to fix this part especially since I purchased the extended warranty. My car has 89000 miles and was purchased new.

46 Steering Column problem

Tl-the contact owns a 2012 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that the steering column shakes uncontrollably and make loud ticking noises. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. The failure mileage was 103,000. Ad.

47 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 07/27/2015

When sitting in my driveway with the car running, if I move the steering wheel back and forth it makes a clank noise. This happens while in park and also in gear. I have had a mechanic look at it and was told that it was the steering column intermediate shaft universal joint connections. He also said he knew there was a recall on the same body style as my car but a year older (2011). I feel this may be part of the same issue that cause the recall for the 2011 and may have been over looked.

48 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2015

My steering wheel has a significant click when I turn on it. I went to the dealership and they told me it was not covered under warranty. Hyundai of tampa told me it was a coupling in the steering wheel column and it is a common problem. I have 71745 miles on a 2012 Sonata. Hyundai had a recall with this problem on their 2011 model, but not one under 2012. I spoke to jessica with Hyundai customer connect center. She was polite but could not do anything except offer me a $35 coupon for maintenance.

49 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 04/01/2015

Whenever I'm driving for the past 5 going on 6 months since I purchased the vehicle I've noticed the steering column makes a loud clunking noise. No matter the speed I'm traveling the steering column continues to make this noise. I have noticed the on going issue has affected a lot of other consumers on numerous other Hyundai Sonata year models! I'm afraid that if this issue is left unresolved that steering column may detach and cause serious injury and or death!! I would like to know what could be done to resolve this issue ASAP!!!.

53 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2014

Purchased my Sonata with 40k miles. At around 70k miles it started making a knocking sound in the steering column, at low spped. It has only got worse, it now happens at all speeds. The metal to metal hitting sound is made at every left to right movement of the steering wheel. After research it is found to be the internals of the eps, also the plastic bushing inside the coupling. When hitting bumps in the road the wheel will shake hard and sound as if the steering wheel column has broke and will feel a pop in the wheel as if it has come out of the joint then pops back in after hitting a bump. Noticed online there are 100s if not 1000s of Hyundai Sonatas and elantra drivers who are experiencing the same sort of issues.

54 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 08/22/2011

While braking hard to avoid a coyote, vehicle pulled hard right even though I was trying to steer left. Was pulled off road to the right and hit a driveway. Caused extensive damage to under carriage and bumper. Notified dealership of the issue while vehicle was repaired at the same dealership I purchased vehicle from. At the end of September 2011, I received an e-mail from Hyundai blue link that there was an issue with the esc (electronic steering control). Brought the vehicle to the dealership and was told that it was an error with the blue link system. A month later, another e-mail, took car back to dealership, they performed diagnostics and a clock wheel sensor was dead in the steering column. The esc adjusts pressure to the brake calipers in an attempt to maintain the vehicle in the same direction before braking. Was told by service manager that if a sensor was bad in the steering column, it would affect the braking and could have caused the vehicle to improperly apply braking pressure thus pulling the car off the road. Contacted insurance company and they were pursuing Hyundai about this issue.

55 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 06/30/2011

This is for a 2012 Sonata. Your options to select this make and model only showed 2011 as the option year. This complaint is for a 2012. I purchased a 2012 Sonata in late June. Technically this is the second one I purchased. I can explain it this way. The first one I bought had a horrible pulling issue. It pulled right aggressively. Before I took delivery I test drove it and had the salesman drive with me. Even he said, this is dangerous and not right. The dealership put it in the shop and they said they fixed it with an alignment. I test drove it again and it was even worse. I refused to buy that car. They found me another one. At first it seemed to drive fine on the test drive. I should have driven it more then a couple blocks. Same issue as the first one after I took delivery. The car pulled and still pulls right, especially at highway speeds. Border line dangerous on the highway. So, the dealership took it in again and worked the camber. It still pulls now it goes to the left or right and is very unpredictable. I have researched this on line. Edmunds forums, various Sonata columns, yahoo forums etc¿there are people all over the country having the same problem with the 2012 Sonata steering. Some Sonata techs say it¿s the same problem they had in 2011 when the recall was announced. This will be the third time this vehicle is in the shop and my frustrations driving it are high. It can be dangerous at highways speeds. Constantly having to correct the vehicles path.
