36 Brake Light problem

Failure Date: 11/07/2018

Summer of 2018 I complained to carmax about electrical problems to check. My horn unexpectedly will not work, my monitor stopped working and was replaced (oct 2018) but now it blinks off and on, and I would replace my exterior lights almost every 2-3 months. Recently (Nov 2018) I was told my brake lights were out so I went to replace them at autozone and was told my light cases are melted as well as the bulb holder is burnt. I have only had this car for 1 year and 10 months. Since purchasing this car I have replaced my cv joints 4 times, had a new monitor put in the car, new engine and other recalls completed on this car. I feel it is important that the manufacturer completely recall this model year for safety reasons.

My brake lights constantly burn out and get hot. My harness even melts due to the heat and my bulbs. I have replaced my brake lights at least 6 times or more in less than 2 years. I have complained to Hyundaiusa and the dealership about the issue since 2016 for them to want to charge me over 500. 00 for the repair. I'm also having issues with my headlights blowing, my interior lights coming on when they want too(have to leave them on off all the time) and my lights flickering. I am terrified of my car catching fire due to the electrical issues it's having. There have been several issues with this car since I had it and it's ridiculous.

42 Brake Light problem

Failure Date: 06/14/2018

In just over 18 months of ownership, we have had to change brake lights at minimum 9 times. We have been told by one mechanic that it's an electrical issue but the dealership said that it wasn't. A third mechanic stated that it is an electrical issue. Currently, the brake light socket wiring is burned requiring replacement of the entire brake light housing unit. For the numerous complaints noted on the internet, this should be replaced by Hyundai and should not be an expense to owners. Additionally, my car stalled suddenly ( the engine seized ) and the repair (replacement of engine) was covered by Hyundai warranty extension.

43 Brake Light problem

Failure Date: 06/08/2018

"takata recall" case # 11315399. Passenger brake light is inoperative. Hyundai dealership service department determined that both tail lamp housing is warped and in need of replacement. Hyundai customer service representative further explained to me that the cause of this condition occurring is that the housing socket heats up and is the cause of the warping. I brought this to the dealership attention about a possible electrical defect on numerous occasions. I filed a complaint with Hyundai USA good will department and requested that they repair the vehicle, they declined based on the warranty expiration. The tail lamp housing warping on any vehicle is not a normal occurrence during the life of a vehicle. Further, Hyundai is aware of this problem. They have been requiring customers to pay for the repairs on affected vehicles. The consumer should be able to replace the lamp bulb and not the lamp housing as a general wear and tear operation. I presently have a vehicle that I can not drive due the exorbitant cost to correct the problem. I am requesting that your department investigate this matter in order to generate a recall on this vehicle for defective tail lamp or wiring housing problem.

52 Brake Light problem

Failure Date: 11/02/2017

I have now replaced the housing rear brake light unit 3 times due to shorting out. The most recent short has caused the housing unit to melt causing a replacement of just the bulb not an option. The tag lights turn off and on and appear sometimes to be burnt out. This is also a short/wiring issue. This is a huge cause of concern for a trunk fire as this happens when the vehicle is in motion. I have been pulled over as a warning to get the lights replaced. Also, the spoiler on the vehicle has not only cracked all the way through but is also peeling due to coating issues. Only the spoiler on the car is the problem.

57 Brake Light problem

Failure Date: 02/08/2017

The front lights and brake lights have been replaced on numerous occasions on my 2013 Hyundai Sonata. My vehicle was pulled over by a police officer on February 8, 2017 for my brake lights being out. The officer was nice enough to write a warning ticket and said that the lights needed to be taken care of. I immediately took the vehicle to the dealership the next day and was informed that the brake light assembly on both sides needed to be replaced. They attempted to try to put the bulbs in; however, the casing was melted and it was impossible to insert the bulbs back into the casing. I asked what would cause the casing to melt and was not given a definitive answer. After reading other reviews on the internet, it appears that this is an issue with other consumers. This repair is not due to any wear and tear on behalf of the consumer. My concern is that if the brake casing is melting, it is apparently getting hot and no one seems to know why. The bulb casing may continue to melt and could possibly cause a fire. I contacted Hyundai's corporate office and expressed my concerns. I was informed that there is not currently a recall on the brake light assembly. I am reaching out to everyone with this issue to submit a formal complaint so that this issue can be addressed. The repair is costly ($580. 00 for both sides), it is an ongoing issue of replacing light bulbs on the vehicle, and most importantly-the melting or the reason for the melting may cause a fire.

Failure Date: 10/01/2016

This issue has been a constant in my car, which I purchased new. My brake lights stop working. I have replaced them at least 10 times since I bought the vehicle. I consulted my dealership and they told me that the car had a defect. The brake light socket overheated and melted and caused the brake lights to fail. I checked the socket, and it is melted. I was told that it was a brake sensor problem. My dealership told me that I would have to pay to replace the whole brake/taillight assembly. This is obviously a safety concern. I only learn that my lights are not working when someone outside the vehicle, usually someone driving behind me, lets me know. Also, the melted socket would seem to be a real fire hazard.
