I had been hearing a clicking noise when turning the steering wheel. The steering wheel also vibrates at speeds above 60. I took the car in for diagnosis and was told the steering column and assembly needs to be replaced. I had recently hit a pothole and noticed the noise and vibration was a lot worse. The dealership felt that could have been a cause of the increased noise and vibration. I was advised to file a claim with my insurance company. The insurance company said it was a known steering wheel issue with Hyundai.
The steering column is clanging over bumps and when steering which is a failure in the plastic steering shaft coupler. This coupler looks like an impeller. It is situated between the steering column shaft and the electric steering motor. The coupler is disintegrating and will lead to steering failure and high probability to death or injury of the cars occupants. This coupling failure is commom and found in perhaps thousands of Hyundai vehicles. A recall needs to be mandated immediately. If it is ignored then Hyundai needs to prepare for the lawsuits that will ensue.
No incident yet! I bought the car from a family elderly member who kept it in the garage! the car has only 7,600 miles! the steering wheel makes a clunking noise when making a turn! when I searched for recalls I saw it's a common problem with that year 2013 hyunday Sonata! everyone who complained is surprised that there is no recall issued! people with higher mileage are experiencing failure of steering/ car when turning, fails and goes to next lane!.
There are multiple issue with this car since last a year or more. ( picture attached) * at times computer flashes below message . . " Hyundai system warning safety stop do not drive" * steering lock up * while driving a screeching sound and then it goes away. We received the recall notice and my daughter jeranica took it to the Hyundai dealer for repair. They charged us $900 mentioning the issue is with belt & assembly and engine is ok. We informed then of all the above issue. Even after repairing the above we still have the same issue with the car. It look like Hyundai dealer are using this opportunity to rip-off the customer instead of actually fixing the issue. We still have above issue with, car computer asking us to stop on highway and steering lockup, dealer does not seem to be interested in fixing the issue. At one time he mentioned we have 114k mileage on the car and the life of engine is finish.
I love my 2013 Hyundai Sonata se, but with that being said I hate driving it. When on the road the 2013 has the same exact issue that the 2011's had, it will constantly wander in and out of the lane making it nearly impossible to keep a straight line. Its very fatiguing having to keep moving the steering wheel back and forth just to keep it straight. And for two its a serious safety issue!! the slightest slip could send your car off the road or into another car! when bringing the car into my local dealership they blew me off and said its " a normal thing because of the electric power steering and how the car rides the grooves of the road. " and they refuse to help me out further to fix the issue. Please guys. I know I am not the only one to report this issue please ask Hyundai to create a recall on it.
My 2013 Hyundai Sonata gt was a part of the class action lawsuit in which the engine was replace. Within a year, I've had the vehicle checked and serviced at two different auto repairs shops for an extremely rough ride, loud rumbling-thumping and also a squeaking noise. The vehicle still drifts after having two separate wheel alignments. The steering wheel rattles and shakes with the slightest bump in the road. It feels like the underneath is falling apart and I'm going to lose control of the vehicle. With the sounds it makes and how it drives, it feels like I'm now driving a military tank instead of a car. I've spent over $2,000 for replacement-repairs of the: tie rods, u-joints, bushing, brakes, two alignments and four new tires. I called the ofallon IL Hyundai dealer who said there were no recalls or warranty left on these parts. After not getting any assistance from auffenberg Hyundai, I researched online and found hundreds of complaints involving the suspension, steering coupler, defective coil springs puncturing tires and causing motor vehicle accidents and serious injury. There were no warning messages prior to any of these symptoms. I feel that these mentioned parts contribute to maintaining control of the vehicle. I'm sure this could lead to a serious accident which could cause fatalities to eveyone involved! . . . . . . . . .
I was driving out of my home and my vehicle suddenly slowed down and stopped for no apparent reason. I jumped start the car for about 20 minutes and was able to reach a auto zone. They told me it was a dead battery so I buy a new $160 battery for the car to still not work and turn back on. Its like it would start but it would not fully turn all the way on. I recently purchased this vehicle 5 days ago and its already stopping in the middle of traffic.

Clicking when moving the sterring wheel from side to side whether moving or sitting still.
Steering wheel makes clicking and popping sound when wheel is turned left and right, the vehicle is also pulling very hard at highway speeds. Very dangerous to drive.
My steering wheel clicks and always feels as if I'm swerving. Now on the highway ,starts shaking once to 70 miles an hour. This has happened 3 times within 2 weeks . Rattled or shakes real bad going over railroad tracks or hitting a small whole. This is a very serious and dangerous issue that is eventually gonna cause accidents if not fixed . I asked the dealer ship if there had been a recall for this and the response was no and the cost would be $250 to repair.
The steering has become loose makes a very audible clunking sound when steered left and right. There is a severe amount of play in the steering you can turn it up to 3 in before the vehicle actually turns. It also causes drift due to the play. It makes the clunking noise even when sitting still, also has the play in the wheel when sitting still. It will drift while in motion and have the same play in the wheel and clunking.
My steering wheel coupler is broken no one is able to due the work on it my wheel shakes bad when I get onto the highway and when driving street way also also the brakes lights are keep going out I have to get my brake lights changed every two weeks.

After I chaged the oil the I drove my car not even 2 miles and it seemed the tapping sound was getting worse. . . The oil and check engine light came on and it started knocking and shut off now my car want even start my extended warranty expired 2/2020😖.

So my steering wheel coupler has gone bad I knew there was a recall on this when I first got the car; when I went to the Hyundai dealership nobody would fix it and they tried to charge me $600 to fix it. And because of covid I couldnt get it fixed since I was furloughed. Then I was charged $500 to try to find what a ticking noise. Was in my car and I was charged for. Something that Hyundai didnt fix and other dealers charged me and my issue still wasnt fixed. All together I wasted almost $1100 to find a way to fix my issues and nothing was fixed. The second issue I was told was heat box and actuator but it wasnt fixed because Hyundai tried to charge me $3,041. 84. . . . . I know alot of. Things are apart of these recalls this car have but no one even Hyundai was willing to fix it free of charge.
The engine makes a noise when I drive, I keep having to replace head lights and tails every 3-4 weeks, steering wheel was making a noise I hade to replace bushing. This vehicle has as been a problem.
My 2013 90k mile Hyundai Sonata's steering has been making a cluncking/clicking noise when turned/moved from right to left. The steering wheel has noticeable play when parked and when driving at freeway speeds seems to not maintain a straight line pulls right to left. I have an appointment at the Hyundai dealer on Thursday to have it checked to see what the issue is. I will update when I hear what the problem is/remedy. It looks like from what I am ready there are many complaints on this issue.
I started to notice that the steering has become increasingly loose in March of 2020. Recently while driving over even the smallest bumps in the road the steering wheel has started to rattle and shake and feels like it may come off. I work from home, so the car has not been driven a lot and mostly in the neighborhood where the speed limit is 35 to 55 miles per hour. I asked my local Hyundai dealer to take a look at it while I was there last week (9/22/20) to have a recall fixed and I was told it would be $150 just to look at the steering wheel unless there has been a recall for it. After seeing the many complaints regarding this same issue, this should certainly be fixed by Hyundai via a recall. I was considering replacing my vehicle with another Hyundai next year, but due to this issue, probably not. It is disconcerting to drive a vehicle that the steering wheel feels that it may break. I have never experienced this with any car and I have been driving for 40 years.
The contact owns a 2013 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, there was an abnormal clicking sound coming from the steering wheel. The vehicle was not taken to be diagnosed nor repaired. The failure mileage was unknown. The contact then received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 20v121000 (fuel system, gasoline) however, the part to do the repair was unavailable. The contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. VIN tool confirms parts not available.
When steering, a clunking noice is heard and felt as if it's loose. Was able to trace noise to the area of joint assy steering.
When turning the steering wheel I hear a clicking noise like something is loose or broken. There regularly is a burning smell like hot plastic is melting and the brake light constantly burns out. When changing the bulb I noticed the casing appears burned and it is difficult to remove the bulb for replacement. I smell the burning scent when I stop and exit the vehicle. The clicking noice is whenever I turn the steering wheel.
Wheel clicking badly at all times.
Freeway speeds the steering wheel sticks either center or when turning it will stay stuck causing the car to swerve when pulled . Force has to be used to unstick the steering wheel it feels like a magnet is in the steering wheel and it should not feel like that. It's happened plenty times starting about a month ago I was told it was normal when I got the car and it gradually got worse. I bought a car early may the dealer called back and told me I had to return it for a different car due to my income and credit which they were aware about when I got the car but the dealer gave false info to the bank which caused me issues. And this Sonata 2013 was the only car they said they could give me .
Vibrating and clicking within steering wheel.
Clicking or knocking when wheel is turned in each direction.
