1 Brake Light Switch problem of the 2013 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 04/14/2019

Problem with my Hyundai Sonata 2013 GLS taillights/brake lights are not turning off. The car is off, key out of the ignition, lights switched off and foot not on the brake and lights are remaining on. They stay on throughout the night and day. The worst time is while driving , they remain on as if I'm driving with my foot on the brake. This is ridiculous. I am left to figure it out on my own as there is no recalls and I refuse to pay the dealership for something that should clearly be a recall. With hundreds if not thousands of people reporting this issue with Sonatas from modules dating back that I can tell from 2007 to current. I refuse to get this car agai and as soon as I can sale it consider it sold!.

2 Brake Light Switch problem of the 2013 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 02/22/2019

I was leaving a parking lot and my gear shift would not move, I had to put a pair of scissors in the shift lock so it would move, then my brake lights went out. I havent had it fixed yet. My engine blew also a few years ago, I had that fixed but I should not be having issues like this. It may be the brake light switch or the shifter cable.

3 Brake Light Switch problem of the 2011 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 09/07/2018

My brake lights remained illuminated when I was not pressing the brake. I discovered this after they stayed on even while the car was off and parked, and drained the battery so the car would not start. The mechanic replaced the brake light switch and rubber stopper pad.

4 Brake Light Switch problem of the 2012 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 06/11/2018

Recall #15v759000, dated 11/16/15 for 2011-2012 Sonata's built between certain dates. My car fell outside of those dates with a January 3, 2012 date. However my 2012 Sonata, VIN number 5npec4ac3ch447491 is having the exact same problem. How many others out there with Sonatas built after the June 30,2011 cutoff date are having the problem as well. As for me, I was first alerted by other drivers that could not determine when I was braking or not that I had a problem with the ability to retain a charge on my battery due to the brake lights staying illuminated, draining the battery charge, preventing accurate communication to rearward following vehicles that the vehicle is slowing or stopping. Additionally, if the brake switch plunger is not retracted, then the transmission can be shifted out of park without depressing the brake pedal. As known, these conditions increase the risk of a crash and harm to indidvidiuals, up to and including death. I suggest this be researched for the need to repair this problem on the 2012 Sonatas that were continued to be built after 6/30/2011. Thank you.

5 Brake Light Switch problem of the 2013 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 05/09/2018

This is the second time the brake lights stop working. On this occasion I was on my way to a doctor's appointment on highway 270 coming from hagerstown MD when my passenger told me someone is trying to get my attention the driver told me my brake lights are out it was at that time I realized why the other drivers was stopping so close to my car. I just thought it was bad drivers not knowing they couldn't tell I was stopping. As soon as I could I got out to check and neither brake light was working. I check the bulbs although I just changed them about two months ago and the bulbs was fine. So I switched the lights from auto to where they are just on and the lights work.

6 Brake Light Switch problem of the 2012 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 12/11/2017

Around 60,000 miles, my driver's side brake light harness melted and had to be replaced. Around 80,000 miles, my passenger brake light harness melted and had to be replaced. Around the same time, 80,000 miles, my automatic door lock master switch began failing. I'm wondering if there's an electrical flaw causing these problems. Perhaps the writing doesn't hold up in hot climates, I live in a desert where the car is subject to temperature up to 140f as it is parked in direct sunlight. I notice more malfunction with locks on extremely hot days.

8 Brake Light Switch problem of the 2008 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 06/01/2016

One of the rear brake lights are not turning on while applying the brakes. On investigation I found that it might be due to the brake lamp switch issue mentioned on Hyundai's website and they recalled a lot of vehicles in last couple of years. When I checked about the car's eligibility on Hyundai's website, I found my car as eligible for repair free of cost. After talking to the dealer for fixing of the issue, they said that my vehicle is not eligible for the repair. Then I sent an email to the helpdesk with the details. Also, I contacted them on the helpline number. As per them, my vehicle was already recalled a couple of years back and the switch was replaced with a high quality part which should not create any more problems and I'll have to bear the inspection and replacement cost. I would like the company/dealer to get this fixed ASAP since the part has again started creating problems in just 2 years and I am worried with the further problem it may cause to my and my family's safety. I came to know about this issue today morning while commuting to office.

11 Brake Light Switch problem of the 2011 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 10/23/2014

I was informed by several CO-workers that there were recalls for our car, the 2011 Hyundai Sonata. The problems that are affecting my 2011 Hyundai Sonata are: exterior lighting: brake lights: switches, brake light and steering: gear box: shaft sector. The only recall that the Hyundai dealer honored was from campaign 123. Campaign 110 and 122 will not be honored due to the manufacture date of my vehicle which is March 28, 2011. If my car is having the same problems as the other 2011 Hyundai Sonatas why can't my vehicle be repaired under the recall. I feel that this is unfair to consumers of the 2011 Hyundai Sonata due to a manufacturing date. Please give me some type of remedy for this matter!!! had I known about the business practices of Hyundai I would have never purchased this vehicle!!!.

12 Brake Light Switch problem of the 2003 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 08/26/2014

My neighbors informed me that my brake lights were stuck on. One of them researched and read that it may be the m48 stop lamp switch. We found the plastic backing portion from the contact plate that pushes the switch in. It was broken in pieces and laying on the floor mat below the brake pedal. He replaced it with something that is temporarily doing the job. I will be taking my car into the Hyundai dealer next week to have this fixed. They will also be replacing my gas tank that got punctured while they were replacing the valve-canister cl, canister assy. , and valve-purge contr. Back in Feb. 2014 when I could not easily get fuel into the vehicle. I believe the fuel issue should be a recall as well from all of the people I have seen on the internet searching for resolutions to the same problem with their Hyundai's.

He replaced the brake light switch but a couple days later the check engine light came back on. The computer listed a different code, stating the brake light switch is not compatiable, but the rear brake lights work off and on. My air bag light stays on all the time. Whenever I am driving alone, my passenger seatbelt light flashes not stop. This two things been going on for a while now. Also my my lights stay on even after I switch my lights off, I have to turn them on and turn them back off until they shut off. A mechanic told me its the brake light switch causing the problem. 18 Brake Light Switch problem of the 2011 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 08/29/2012

I have a 2011 Hyundai Sonata. I had my brake pedal stoplight switch replaced a few days ago by a Hyundai dealer, which was covered under the manufacturer's warranty. However, in doing research on this replacement, I have found that this is a common problem of Hyundai Sonata owners and it would seem that Hyundai has not corrected this issue other then to replace the oem switch when it fails. Based upon what I have read, I therefore expect that this replacement will fail again sometime in the future and probably at an inopportune time. Since it takes only a few moments to replace the switch, some Hyundai owners that have had multiple failures have gone as far as carrying a spare switch in their glove compartment in case the switch fails again and they are either out of warranty or not near a dealer. The safety issue revolves around the failure of this switch which results in the brake lights not being operable and the possibility of other safety systems being affected too, I. E. Traction control and abs. If this switch failure occurs with the vehicle in park, the gearshift lever cannot be moved. If this failure was a "once in a lifetime" failure, it would not be that much of an issue. But again, that does not seem to be the case and research of Hyundai's repair records or statements made by owners of these cars should bare that out. The original oem switch part is #93810-3s000. An alleged update may be part # 93810-3k000 but this part can not be installed in the vehicles having the original part and Hyundai has not made a retro installation possible if this "k" switch is indeed an updated replacement. I feel that Hyundai should address this issue and produce a retro fit for this safety related brake switch since it seems to be a constant issue that needs attention due to the failure of the switch which then causes, at the very least, inoperable brake lights.

21 Brake Light Switch problem of the 2011 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 09/08/2011

My skid light warning light kept coming on. They said a brake lamp switch was pulling a fault code, so they replaced it. Nine months later my skid light warning was randomly coming on again. They ran a test again saying it was a faulty brake lamp switch again. Before I could get it in for repairs the transmission range sensor malfunction on Aug 14 2012. Picked up my car again and the skid traction warning light came on again. I took it in again this time the tcs light was on and the shifter was not releasing. They tested the brake switch circuit and found no power to the brake switch. They replaced the fuse box and harness cable. I have called three different dealerships service departments and they all say there is a problem with the brake lamp switch causing the tcs warning light to come on. If it is effecting other cars there most be a national problem and should be a recall before there is a fatality. I have had this car for 2 years now and had it in for electrical problems over eight times. ## VIN passed ## Hyundai Sonata 2011 ##.

22 Brake Light Switch problem of the 2007 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 09/07/2011

My brake lights intermittently stop working. I have had the recall done for the brake relay switch. However my brake lights are unreliable since the problem started in Aug of 2011. We have replaced the bulbs several times. My mechanic now is talking about replacing wiring and or wiring assemblies. There is still something wrong with the brake lights and Hyundai needs to figure it out. In all the cars I have owned I have never had such a dangerous and ongoing problem. The dealer ship says tough.

25 Brake Light Switch problem of the 2007 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 06/06/2008

On June 2, 2008 the esc (electronic stability control) light on the dash indicated the esc was not engaged. It went off after I stopped the car and restarted. The light came on 2 more times in the next 4 days. On June 6, I was making a "y" turn on a residential street and the shift would not move out of drive. Having read the owner's manual previously, I popped the button on top of the shift console and pushed the button with my knife. I was able to get into reverse, but the shift locked down again keeping me from going into drive. I had to push the button. I brought the car to my dealer on June 16. The brake light switch was faulty and sticking causing the problem. Since I have only 8,456 miles on the car, warranty covered the repair.

26 Brake Light Switch problem of the 2007 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 05/09/2008

The brake light switch on my 2007 Hyundai Sonata (v6 - limited - auto transmission) has failed twice in less than one year. Both times, failure began with automatic deactivation of the electronic stability control system (as indicated by a light in the instrument panel), followed several days later by failure of the transmission interlock system which makes it impossible to shift the car to/from drive to reverse (or park). When this failure occurred on Friday, may 9, 2008, I was pulling into a parking lot but suddenly needed to reverse my direction to avoid being hit by another vehicle that did not yield the right of way. With no warning, I suddenly found that the shift lever would not move into reverse because the shift interlock (controlled by the defective brake switch) would not allow the lever to move. I was stuck in traffic for several minutes and was nearly hit by a truck because I could not move the vehicle! luckily, I remembered how to remove the small cover over the manual disengagement point and was able to use a leatherman tool to deactivate the shift lock system and place the car in reverse. This could have been a tragic situation if I had been hit by the truck or if this had happened near a railroad crossing or as I was boarding a ferry boat on puget sound. This is not an isolated problem with Hyundai automobiles as I found by researching the issue on the web. This is a serious problem that needs to be fixed once and for all! the dealer replaced the switch under warranty, but this will do little good if I am killed or seriously injured the next time failure occurs.
