Car makes a loud clicking noise in the steering column when going over 60 mph and when slowing down. When parked, there is also clicking noises when turning the steering wheel. When in reverse, it makes a clicking noise when turning. Gas gauge doesn't work. It now will run out of gas when there are "60 miles" left until empty. The cruise control button will not work. You have to keep pressing it to come on. Also, the button to see trip miles, trip a, trip b etc, does not work on the 1st try. It takes many pushes to get the screen to change.

The controls on my steering wheel will randomly quit working. The cruise control will work fine one time and then the next I can't hit set or the cancel button will be the cruise or it will flip through the other options (trip button). If I hit the steering wheel in this vicinity it will work correctly sometimes. The volume button will either mute, or the + will actual decrease the volume. The button to change the station (presets) will change the mode (am, cd, sirius. . . ) sometimes one direction (up) works and the other does something else random. All of the steering wheel controls seem to have a mind of their own and do not work correctly most days vs some days the buttons work fine. I took it to the dealership prior to the warranty expiring and it worked fine. Next day, issues again. I saw other complaints about this but can't seem to make it happen when I need it to. Frustrating since it is safer to use these controls that the buttons on the dash.
Cruise control will not set, accel, or cancel intermittently with daily use of the car. It works usually when you first start driving the car but not always. The cancel button rarely works at all and there have been instances when the only way I could cancel cruise control was by hitting the brake pedal. Several near collisions because of the failure of the switches on the steering wheel working. I've taken it to the dealer repeatedly to have it repaired and they say they can't duplicate the problem. I bought the car new and just recently had it at the dealership again and now they say they won't cover it under warranty and that it would be customer pay. In mid--August 2015, my car began to have odd things happen such as the car alarm randomly going off. I replaced the battery thinking it may be the cause. That did not help. The alarm still randomly went off. I did not think this was a serious problem until my daughter was driving at highway speeds. On Aug 14th she reported to me that her steering became erratic regardless of what she did. After she pulled over, she noticed the fuel gauge went to zero and the low fuel light began blinking despite having recently filled the tank. When she got back on the road, the cruise control suddenly stopped working. Finally, within the next couple of days, the brake lights came on and would not go off. This caused the left tail light assembly to completely melt! then, on Aug 24th, she drove the car to o'brien Hyundai in ft myers, FL. They replaced the steering angle sensor, sending unit, brake switch, brake switch stopper, and tail light assembly. They could not tell her or me what the root cause was for this electrical issue that nearly caused a accident.

Bought 2 brand new Sonata with top technology package on 4/15/2015. The problem happened on both new cars. Whenever the gas pedal is off, the computer/software take control of slowing the car down even with open road ahead, on flat surface, on corners, up or down hill. This happened whether it is in eco, nor or pwr driving mode. At various stages, the brake kicks in at various speed and the transmission downshift prematurely; in deceleration, the rpm will only goes down until idling speed, but I can see the rpm goes up a few hundred rpm at least twice before the Sonata come to a complete stop? Sonata does not have "hill decent control" like the range rover for specific safety reasons. In cruise control, it is even worst. If you set cruise at 60, later speed up to 80 to pass a slower car, once you let off the gas pedal, the car hit the brake and slow you back to 60? what is the hurry? coasting is drivers best friend because it means free mileage. Yet Sonata engineer thinks otherwise. This erratic behavior would certainly irritate the driver behind you enough and even cause road rage. On March 9th, 2015, I was driving home from work after picking up my infant daughter from daycare when several warning lights illuminated on the dashboard of my 2006 Hyundai Sonata; the airbag, abs, and esc off warning lights. In preparation for the upcoming left turn into my neighborhood, I tapped the brake pedal to disengage the cruise control and coast to the intersection. The cruise control did not disengage. I applied more pressure to the brake pedal to slow down, but upon releasing the brake the vehicle returned to the set cruise speed. I now applied as much pressure as I possibly could to the brake pedal and the cruise control set light did not disengage. The Sonata downshifted and revved up to 4k rpm attempting to overpower my braking. At this point it was too late to avoid the intersection. I placed the car into neutral and swerved to avoid hitting an oncoming vehicle and median, at the turn. The Sonata spun out and came to rest in the oncoming traffic lanes after overshooting the turn. I verified my daughter was uninjured then proceeded to drive the Sonata, at idle, the remaining 1/8th of a mile to my house. After arriving at home, I visited Hyundai's and the national highway traffic safety administration’s vehicle recall information web pages and found no recalls regarding my Sonata’s VIN.

The contact owns a 2013 Hyundai Sonata. While driving various speeds, the vehicle would not immediately accelerate when the accelerator pedal was depressed and the cruise control would not operate. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and repaired, but the failures eventually recurred. The failure mileage was 45,000.
Since leasing the vechicle on August 1 I constantly complained about the gas mileage which hyandai indicated would be resolved on the following oil change. The oil change bearly effected the mileage efficiency which leads to the second issue when the gas guage shows below a quarter on the tank the cruise control does not work and is also affected in high mountain areas. When I explained these issues to hyandai they said they never heard of it and would sent to the company for further review in the meantime I have a car with the gas guage that does not show exact amounts from fill up to empty makes this car a safety risk that is totally unacceptable not to mention the car is running horrible which suggest other safety features are not working accurately. The dealers look over only suggested other underlying issues exist with this vehicle and is a clear safety hazard.
On Jan 26 my husband was driving home and the road conditions were slippery. When he went to apply the brakes, he heard a loud pop and the brake went all the way down to the floor and would not come back up. Luckily this happened around the corner, but by the time the car made it into the driveway the brakes were smoking. I had to have the car towed to the mechanic. We had to replace the front brake pads, calipers and rotors. Also the brake switch oem had to replaced. When all said and done the total cost came to 729. 64. Can I tell you how disappointed I am in this vehicle?? this vehicle is only a 2012 my high beams don't work nor does the cruise control. I am starting to think this car is a real lemon!!! at this point I would like to know if the brake system has any recalls because my bill was extreme and should not have happened on a 2012. I do not have the VIN number on me at this time. Very very disappointed and have nothing good to say about this car!.

When using cruise control for more than one hour, the cruise or lessen speed button stops working. This causes driver to either apply brakes to slow vehicle down, or turn off cruise control. The cruise control speed no longer works. I took vehicle to dealer, who will not test drive vehicle for greater than one hour to verify problem. They also refuse to replace switch. I indicated that I would pay to replace switch, and they again refused, indicating that they would be liable if that did not "fix" the issue--that they say does not exits.
I was driving south on i25 in colorado near denver. The car was on cruise control, going approximately 55 mph. I saw a bus a couple of hundred yards away. The bus was either stopped or going very slowly. I applied the brakes and my 2008 Sonata would not go out of cruise control. I tried canceling cruise control and braking and car remained in cruise control. At the last moment, I tried the emergency brake as I crashed into the back of the bus going about 55 mph. I nearly died. I couldn't breathe for 20 seconds. I have fractured ribs and fractured bones in my back. The car is totaled. It looks like a squashed accordion.

I took my car into the Hyundai dealer for a 30,000 service. They said the computer has an upgrade to the software. After the upgrade, the cruise control speeds up by 4 - 5 miles per hour when it is set. For instance, if you set it at 65 mph, it will speed up to 69 or 70 mph and then slow back down to 65. It does this when you initially set the speed or if you brake and then hit the "resume" button. In the case of "resume", if you initially set it at 65 mph and use the brake to slow down and then use the "resume" button, the car will speed up to 69 or 70 before going back down to 65. The cruise control will do this no matter what speed you initial set it at. I took the car back in and the service people thought it was strange. So they said they ran the upgrade to the software again, but it has the same issue. They then told me that the surge in speed was within an acceptable tolerance range. I have owned many cars with cruise control and none of them have ever done that and this car did not do it prior to the software upgrade. It is pretty dangerous if you are not paying attention.
Steering wanders on a straight road. Driving in a straight line is nearly impossible. More noticeable at highway speeds, but also at city speeds, the vehicle requires constant correction to maintain a straight track. The car simply 'wanders' or 'drifts' left and right, with no real 'centered' feel to the steering. Maintaining a straight track is impossible and requires constant attention and correction. The steering wander creates hazardous driving conditions, especially on wet or icy surfaces and driver fatigue, which poses a public safety hazard. The vehicle has been brought to the Hyundai dealership over 10 times for resolution, and the manufacturer has been informed twice. The dealership and manufacturer denies there is a problem and states that the individual does not know how to drive and/or that the individual would have to wait for a recall. Hyundai us has not been responsive to complaints. Cruise control has failed to operate since vehicle was purchased new. Hyundai has attempted 3 repairs and are now denying claims.

On 09/22/13, I left for a 75 mile trip. When I first started my car that morning, I noticed it was moving sluggishly, but thought it was due to our overnight chilly temperatures. I drove the short distance to the interstate. As I attempted to merge onto the interstate, I had the most frightening experience of my life. I pressed on the accelerator to prepare to merge and discovered that I had practically no acceleration! my car got to between 5000 and 6000 rpms before it shifted out of first gear! at that point, I was going approximately 45 mph while trying to merge onto an interstate, in front of a semi that would not get over for me to merge. I literally had my accelerator pedal pushed to the floor, as the car again hit between 5000 and 6000 rpms to shift into second gear! I was able to eventually get my car to 65 and turn on the cruise control . I double checked to make sure I was in drive (rather than neutral or manual--no dashboard lights on). On occasion during that drive, I turned off the cruise and hit the accelerator to see if what I had experienced was a fluke¿it was not. My accelerator was literally mashed to the floor as my car¿s speed slowly lurched higher, while my rpms raised above 5000 before shifting to the next gear. Once I returned home, I turned off my car for a few minutes, before restarting the vehicle to test it. The transmission problem was gone (although I question whether my turbo is still working effectively, as it seems less responsive). Today, I took my car to the local car dealership to address the recent Sonata recall, and I also requested they examine my transmission, describing the above incident to them. I noted that other drivers mentioned that a ¿waste gate� issue appeared to be causing the shifting problems. They could find no problems and suggested I shifted into manual accidentally.
I had the cruise control set to 47mph, I was approaching the road to turn right and I tapped the brake to kick off the cruise control as I have done before. I then looked at the traffic around me and had to fix my seat belt which tightened too much, taking my eyes off the road a moment. When I looked up the car in front of me was at a dead stop, and I was still traveling at 47mph! the cruise control never turned off to slow the car down, I hit the car in front of me, which hit the car in front of her. My insurance decided to total my vehicle.

Car in park, key in ignition-motoridling--wife and I awaiting to board ferry car suddenly reved very high with tach over 5--checked car was in park no obstruction (mat etc. . ) or foot touching gas pedal--killed ignition to stop uncontriled reving of engine. Four witnesses ti incident--two in car, two standing next to vehicle. Called dealer immed and made apointment to have car checked---first uncontroled incident on cruise control April of 2013, second sudden increase August 5th 2013 again on cruise control--dealer found brake switch problem after 8-05-13 sudden surge but claims "can"t replicate additional surges. . Cruise control used on way to ferry. Car taken to dealer 8-26-13 again they can't replicate. Occurs when in cruise control more than 20-30 min. Or more--perhaps wiring or modules heating up--dealer no help!!!!!!.
Cruise control would not disengage by hitting cancel or turning it off. It would only disengage by depressing brake pedal. I have been having problems engaging cruise control for about a week. The brake interlock switch was already replaced once, if it had failed again the only option would have been to put the car in neutral and shut it off.
The cruise control fails to engage every time you press it. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Dealer replaced the switch saying it was bad. Problem persisted so I took it back in. They cannot replicate it since it is intermittent therefore I cannot get this fixed.
Westbound on I-78 near harrisburg, PA while traveling on cruise control vehicle motor increased without driver input from 65mph to over 72mph to the point of 80mph before several hard foot pressures on brake disengaged cruise control. Car did not respond to normal brake pedal tap to disengage. Called dealer who suggested we not use cruise control and on return had them service--dealer could not replicate and returned car. On 8-05-13 which was next highway trip on 440w in staten island, NY while on cruise control at 60mph (flow of traffic) car suddenly made high reving motor noise, lurched forward and increased speed to 0ver 70mph--brake again did mot disengage car but heavy (very heavy) pressing on disengage button slowed car. Car to be looked at after our return--scheduled check 8-13-13.
Vehicle wanders from lane to lane requiring constant correction. This condition causes fatigue when traveling at highway speeds. Vehicle driver can not take their attention off the road for more than a few seconds, especially in windy conditions or heavy traffic as the vehicle will wander. This causes premature tire wear tires must be replaced in as little as 10,000 miles and the cost is about 1k for all four tires. Problem two. Cruise control will not set or cancel must be turned off, or the brake depressed or the control buttons are inoperative pressing the cancel button does not turn off the cruise and if it does, after numerous attempts, the cruise will not resset.
Basically it appears that I'm having the same brake switch issue common with many Hyundais. However, currently the '09 Sonata is not covered under any recall. The problem began at least a year ago when the esc off light would turn on at random times. It would normally clear upon turning the car off. A few days ago the esc off light would not turn off. Today I could not shift into park from drive. After searching the internet I quickly found the brake switch issue. I confirmed that my brake lights were not functional. This is something occurs with absolutely no warning which is a bit scary since I drive home on a major highway. I'm not sure how long the brake lights had been out. I also noticed that the cruise control stopped functioning when the esc off light became permanent. However, for some reason it started working again when the shift lock problem occurred. Odd. Not sure why an additional issue would make the speed control functional again.

I was driving down a hill that was not very steep, in good weather, with cruise control on at 60 mph. As the car went down the hill, the speed increased to 80,at which point in time I used my brake to slow down. The same thing has happened on numerous occasions with me alone and with others in the car, including a staff member of the dealership, who told me that this was normal behavior for a Hyundai Sonata and for the cruise control on his own vehicle. If I cancel cruise control in the middle of a hill, speed decreases or holds steady --it does not accelerate.
The vehicle's cruise control failed to engage or disengage when used. The dealership was initially unable to replicate the problem, then replaced a headlamp switch. After this, the radio began turning completely off while driving, and the cruise control continued to act erratically. The dealership said they could not replicate the problem but replaced the radio. Several more times, the dealership stated they were unable to replicate the problem with the cruise control and radio. After contacting the manufacturer, the dealership looked at the car again and found loose pins in the connector to the fuse box.
The contact owns a 2011 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated while driving 63 mph the cruise control was engaged. Upon approaching another vehicle he applied the brakes in order to disengage the cruise control but the vehicle accelerated and crashed into the rear end of a vehicle. Upon impact, the air bags did not deploy. No one was injured. The police were contacted and a report was filed. The contact was able to drive the vehicle from the crash site. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic to be repaired; however, no one investigated the cruise control failure. The failure and current mileage was approximately 26,000. Updated 06/05/12.
Three problems cropped up immediately or shortly after initial ownership. The car pulls to the right, and the steering wheel must be turned to the left of center to compensate when driving on a flat surface. Second, the sunroof area developed a loud creaking sound when the car is driven through a turn or over uneven road surface. Third, and most alarmingly, the cruise control intermittently fails to disengage when the cancel button is pressed. It also intermittently fails to engage when the set button is pressed. If the cruise control has failed to disengage, tapping the brake or pressing the main on/off button will cause it to disengage. However, the confusion that comes from the cancel button failure may lead to an accident. The dealer cannot replicate the problem during a short test drive and refuses to replace or test the electronic modules.
This is what I wrote to Hyundai: rented a Sonata from avis. Loved the car except: safety issue. While using the cruise control the car leaped ahead several times after I had applied the brake (because I was getting too close to the car in front of me) and was temporarily handling speed without the cruise control. Nearly had an accident on twq such occasions. Then I figured out what was happening. The "resume" button is so close to the rim of the wheel, and so exposed, that the heel of my right hand was touching it inadvertantly and the cruise control reengaged when I didn't want it to and didn't know it was happening. Imho, your button needs to be relocated or protected by a ridge. Imho, this is a major safety issue that needs to be addressed now. Please let me know if you agree. If not, I will contact the ntsb. Thank you. Hyundai did not agree that it needed immediate attention, so I am writing to you. I noticed on your site that there were two previous complaints regarding the Sonata's speed control, one of them similar in symptom, although the complainant did not recognize the cause. Please note, this was a rental, not a purchase, but to get through your form I have to say, later, that it was a purchase. I also invented the mileage, as I do not recall the mileage on the rental car.
While driving at 55 mph on the highway, the car self engaged and set the cruise control with no driver input. The car started to accelerate to a higher speed, but stopped accelerating when the brake pedal was pressed. The cruise control was off at the time of the incident. The car is less than 2 months old and has already been in the shop for other cruise control related problems. This car is the new Sonata hybrid and has had multiple other problems requiring numerous visits to the service department.

While driving down a hill at 70 mph the vehicle accelerated up to 80 mph. The dealer stated that there was a problem with the vehicle, but they were unable to repair the failure. The dealer also stated that the failure was connected to Hyundai's attempt to increase the miles per gallon. I had a terrifying experience and near/miss this morning. My 2008 Hyundai Sonata (limited edition) car suddenly accelerated for no reason as I was exiting an expressway doing 65 mph! I couldn't stop the car! my foot was slammed on the brake and I felt/smelled the brake, but the car kept accelerating. I flew through a stop sign at the top of the exit ramp, blowing my horn, whipped around the curve to a street on the right, nearly hitting 4 cars before I finally threw the car into neutral. My car has cruise control, but I don't use it. I was very shaken up, but miraculously, no accident. I had the vehicle towed to the Hyundai dealer, and the technicians cannot find anything wrong with it. I won't drive that car again in its current condition. No way. I was terrified. This was clearly a case of sudden unintended acceleration. Nothing like this has ever happened to me before, and I've been driving for 30 years.
Cruise control switch failed at 4500 miles due to open/short in switch. Part was ordered and installed. Covered under Hyundai's warranty.
