Failure Date: 08/09/2010

I have a Sonata 2. 7 v6 (2002 model) automatic transmission. The major 2 problems that I have faced with the car are: 1. The front door latches are badly lacerated and I have already injured my finger once. The parts need to be replaced. 2. The tcs display comes on and stays on forever and the gear does not move beyond the first. This is in spite of switching the tcs lever off. This is used to happen twice a day earlier. But now it is a permanent feature.

40 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2007 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 07/17/2010

Door handle on driver's side interior stopped "catching" while trying to open door. Apparently this is a common problem with this vehicle. Have to open window to open door from outside. Cheap, plastic manufacturing. What if I needed to get out of the car during an accident. Opening the window or climbing through another door may not be an option.

" I assume this is while the vehicle is parked. I am concerned that I am able to open the front doors when locked and in motion. Furthermore, on page 4/20 it states: "warning - doors * the doors should always be fully closed and locked while the vehicle is in motion to prevent accidental opening of the door. 43 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2003 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 06/03/2010

My wife and I have both cut our hands on the chrome inside door handles of our 2003 Hyundai Sonata. When I questioned the dealer , lafontaine automotive group , in dearborn,mi. I was told that my vehicle was not included in the door handle recall. I don't understand how one vehicle with a problem can be recalled, and another with of the same year and model is not included. Please explain to me. I have pictures that I will try to send to the web site, if I can't I do have them for future reference.

44 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2011 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 05/18/2010

2011 Hyundai Sonata GLS automatic transmission. Problem with ignition key. The key will not go past acc to the lock position to allow the key to be removed. Followed directions in manual to push the key in at acc position, but the lock mechanism does not move. Happens every other day. Have restart the car and move it and try the process again to get key to move into its proper position (lock) to remove key. This has happened to both myself and my wife. Taking car to dealership. Impossible security situation as cannot leave key in vehicle.

45 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2011 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 03/20/2010

2011 Hyundai Sonata GLS automatic transmission. Insert key to start engine. When I want to turn off engine, the key will not go past acc. I push in the key and try to turn key into the lock position, it will not go into the lock position. I have to fiddle around with the release switch, and shifter on the shifter arm. Eventually I can get the key out. The engine does shut off, but can't leave car, because it can be started again. I can't leave the car because the car can be started without me being there. This failure happens almost every time I try to turn off the car. I brought the car back to king Hyundai FL, twice, without them fixing the problem. I am now waiting for them to replace some parts to the shifter arm. If that does not work, I will invoke the lemon law.

46 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2006 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 09/01/2009

At first it was the radio, turning on and off by itself when I would try to lower the volume it would be louder. My headlights would go out and turn on again, my emergency brake light will turn on as my car would stop in the middle of the street. Air bag deployment sign is on and the bag it is not deployed. The abs, esc and other glow lights will turn on; sometimes I cant roll down the windows or lock the car with the button. Now my car will not start, no power and it resets my clock. I have gone to the dealership twice and they are greedy money hungry !@#$% who do not care for their customers, I replaced the battery and the alternator and its been through diagnostics and the alternator was the only thing found wrong. I have issues with the car at least twice a day and three times its died completely. This is an 2006 Hyundai Sonata it should not give me these problems.

49 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2004 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 08/15/2009

Emergency flashers began flashing for no apparent reason and would not be turned off. Then trying to use the keyless entry door opener, the locks began locking and unlocking. When the car was running this stopped. We took it to the dealer and they replaced the etac module, then the entire fuse box. After returning home, the hazard lights again began flashing while the car was parked. This would stop and begin again intermittently. Returned to the dealer and left the car for several days. Finally a switch was replaced and the problem ceased.

52 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2003 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 09/11/2008

I truly believe the safety of my entire family is at risk after finding out that the door locks in the 2003 Sonata lx failed to respond to signals from my remote. I discovered the problem one night after locking my car and then sending my friend to retrieve an item from the vehicle. I forgot to give my friend the key to unlock the car and as a result I was surprised when he returned with the item. I inquired how he did this his response was the left rear door was open. Upon further investif=gation and attempting to lock the car with the remote it was realized that the lock was not responding. This situation was scary to know because my family drives the car at different times and this can endanger them if someone comes into the vehicle while they are away from the car. Living in NY and environs most of the times our cars are parked on the street and a prospective thief can access the car easily. The dealership changed the left rear door actuator after many calls to the manufacturer. I had to pay a reduced cost of $50 to get it foxed after Hyundai agreed to supply the necessary part since the car had just crossed 60000 miles/ 5 years . They said the reason the actuator becomes faulty is their inability to distribute current evenly to the system. Now the right rear door actuator has become faulty at 70000 plus miles and both parties, the dealership and Hyundai, refuse to fix the problem although it was acknowledge to be a known and possible defect in these vehicles. The door now stays in the lock position but again it is a safety issue if I'm trying to gain access to the car in an emergency. . . . Please advise Hyundai to stand by their product. . . . And replace all defective actuators in their line of vehicles.

57 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2005 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 05/21/2008

The 2005 Hyundai Sonata GLS has several problems that should be under warranty and recalled, close to the 2006 recalls. We own a company and have purchased over 12 to 14 Hyundais. We have found that the Sonata GLS 2005 has problems with the airbag deployment, seatbelt restraint, the front tires are closer to the back & not centered on the wheel well (has been this way since purchased, but they do not correct. ), have electrical problems & that unibody type frame & so on. In an accident where a truck left the tail gate down & a ladder hit the windshield, the car was then parked, turned off , the keys taking out of the ignition & then began looking for the cell phone then proceeded to open the door to get out infer all that the driver's side airbag deployed which also caused the front driver's seat belt to lock up & can not be pulled out to wear. Hyundai states that this is not warranted even though it was deployed after the accident occured. Hyundai had a great warranty 10 years ago. They do not stand up to their warranty as before & I have found that some of the warranty has changed. I have switched to Toyota. Hyundai has done nothing so far to correct.

58 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2004 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 01/13/2008

I have a 2004 Hyundai Sonata - same problem as with the 2002-2003 listed below - this should not have been closed. Recall campaign 09v171000 has 1 related investigation(s) NHTSA action number: pe08071 vehicle make / model: model year(s): Hyundai / Sonata 2002 manufacturer: Hyundai motor company component: latches/locks/linkages:doors:latch date investigation opened: December 15, 2008 date investigation closed: may 29, 2009 summary: the manufacturer has issued a safety recall notification as a result of this investigation. The recall affects 91,202 my 2002-2003 subject vehicles produced from January 28, 2002, through March 22, 2003. The vehicle recall population was defined by the manufacturer's use of a new supplier for the chrome plating process beginning in January 2002, and a production change in March 2003 to improve adhesion of the plating to the door handle. Vehicles being recalled represent 59 percent of the total my 2002-2003 production, but account for 91 percent of the consumer complaints received. The process change for my 2002 vehicles resulted in a dramatic increase in complaints (1200 percent on a per unit rate basis). My 2003 vehicles built after March 2003 production change showed a similar decline in the complaint rate. Based on the manufacturer's action, this investigation has been closed.

59 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2006 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 07/10/2007

Since last six months the driver side power lock is not working and also the windshield water pump is not operating. I have bought this vehicle brand new from the dealership. And approximated 19,750 mile. The car is 2006 Hyundai Sonata v6.

60 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2004 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 06/01/2007

Seems to be a defect in the door handles. . . We have flaking of the chrome finish on our 2004 Sonata as well, primarily driver's door.

61 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2004 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 01/01/2007

On my 2004 Hyundai Sonata, the chrome door handle has been peeling away since 2007, resulting in a sharp, jagged edge that I have cut my hand on numerous times. I notice that there is already a recall order for the 2003 Sonatas for this same issue under action #pe08071, but it appears that the 2004 model is doing the same thing, and I would like for that model to be added to this recall as well.

62 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2006 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 09/01/2006

I noticed around this time that the latch holding the center console shut in my 06 Sonata was loose. I tried to put it back into place, but it then broke free in my hands. The console will fling open over most speed bumps. I'm worried in a crash that anything inside of it will fly all over the place. Plus there is a potential for this to surprise the driver and cause a crash. A local dealership will be replacing the whole console, but I wanted to file a report and see whether or not this is an isolated incident.

63 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2006 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 05/14/2006

Doors lock with keypad while doors are still open. After shopping I buckled my son in his car seat and put the groceries in the vehicle. Apparently I inadvertently hit the lock button on the keypad as I was placing my son in his car seat. I sat the keys on the center console, closed the back door and went to get in the driver door and the keys were locked in the vehicle as well as my toddler son in his car seat. I called 911 and after attempting for an hour they were unable to get into the vehicle. The choices were break a window to get in (thus traumatizing my son) or have a private citizen attempt to break into the vehicle. A locksmith was called after my son was in the car for a 1/2 hour and he never showed. A private citizen had to take two screw drivers and pry the door open to be able to reach the door handle and get the door open, thus resulting in damage to the vehicle. The damage to the vehicle is not my concern. The fact that the doors will lock with the keypad while still open is the safety concern. I have owned Honda and Ford in the past and neither of which will open will do the above. I also know people that have Saturn, Toyota, Dodge, and Chevrolet and these vehicle doors will not lock with the keypad while the doors are open either. I have contacted Hyundai and they said it is not a manufacture defect the car is designed that way. I lodged a complaint with Hyundai consumer affairs and they didn't seem to feel it was a safety concern. In my opinion this could have been very dangerous if the weather were 90 degrees or if my son was an infant child. I feel that the vehicles need to be recalled so that this doesn't happen again to me or any other Hyundai owner.

64 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 1998 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 08/14/2004

I bought my Hyundai in 2004. My 1998 Hyundai Sonata vehicle driver and passenger interior part of doors are stuck. I had the passenger side front door repaired the same year. It stuck again in 2006 and has been that way to this day. My problem now is that the driver side door is now stuck as of July 10 2010. I cannot afford repairs at the moment because the car just cut off while driving Friday, July 16, 2010 and hopefully I can afford the repairs to get it working again. I must climb over the seat to the back and go out of the rear passenger door. The driver side rear door is not working because of the latch (they continue to break) and I have replaced all of them at one point. They are $25. 00 at the jay mark Hyundai. They are listed below: driver side window is broken. I went down and never came up again. I could not afford repairs then and asked the mechanic to push it up and put a screw so that it would not come down again. The latch has broken and been replaced twice. The third time I was not going to buy another latch. The door is stuck and will not open. The passenger side window will not go down completely. The passenger side front door will not open it is also stuck and has been for years. I had it repaired and about a year later it would no open again. The rear driver window will not go up and stay up. It will come down inch by inch until a certain point and now I cannot get it to go up again. The latch is also broken on that door as well and I had that latch replaced but only once. The electrical system caught fire. The electrical system is in disrepair again because the tail lights will work for a couple of days at a time and then they are out again or it will short out the bulbs and at night I must slightly touch the brakes while driving to have the tail lights and avoid a ticket. Because of the electrical problems they car will not pass inspection. The system is never ready. The battery will short from time to time and I must replace.
