2008 Hyundai Sonata 6cyl dohc 3. 3l / 152812 water pump went out. Replaced it. Then water ended up in the oil that got into the lifters. Ended up getting another motor. Then my a/c stopped working (didn't blow cool or cold air). Changed oil and oil filter myself along with the oil sensor ( connected to oil filter spot) that was leaking bad as long as the car was running. I was driving on the interstate, in front of a loaded 18 wheeler, driving 75 then my car jerked real hard then dropped down to 40. I had to pull over illegally to keep from getting hit by the truck. As I was catching my breath I turned the car off. When I started it back up it made a weird tick noise. Haven't heard that noise since. When I pulled off it hesitated to change gears from 2 to 3. It finally changed and did not come out of 3rd. Got it towed home. Had my moms boyfriend to check the transmission. He drove it and it was fine. Next morning started car and it sounded like a vacuum cleaner. (low volume) finally it went away. When I headed to work, it hesitated at first. The vacuum noise came back and was louder. Then I sped up to 50, it hard jerked again, and stayed in 3rd gear. As I went further loss power in inside lane of highway and car was smoking under the hood. Like it didn't know I was pushing the gas pedal. Started shaking at around 20 miles an hour. Pulled over and check engine light came on. Called a friend to pull me back home. It was reversing fine but would not go forward. So I changed the accelerator pedal sensor (whole pedal) that wasn't the problem. So then I changed the entire fuel pump/ injector. Still have all parts by the way. That wasn't the problem either. Put it on the machine and it gave a code for ecm and oxygen sensor. Esc light came on as well as tpms, when I started the car. I could move forward but it was like I wasnt. This all started in February 2019.

Rear break light was was flashing, car acted like it did not want to go until it was warmed up. Just had it inspected and again it needed another bulb in break light. Garage this time replaced another bulb and rear O2 sensor, steering angle sensor. Now today there is a recall with the motor. Is this car safe for our son to be driving back and forth to college?.

I have not owned my 2005 Hyundai Sonata for one year yet and is experiencing a confusing time with one set of the exterior lighting not working at all, the fuse were checked so I was told that it may be the switch, also the electrical system on the power doors always lock three out of the four doors. The check engine light goes on and off every other week the code says its a oxygen sensor. The lighting it restraining me form driving at night.

Engine can easily become hydro-locked in heavy rain and road splash back from other vehicles due to the design of the direct air intake of the Sonata hybrid. With its design, it does not have any water baffles to prevent water from entering the air filter and once it enters the air filter box, there are no drain holes for it to drain out. This forces the water through the engine as that is the only way for it to get out of the filter box. When the engine stalled, no electronic control warning lights were illuminated and the car remained in the “ready state. This could lead to damage of the hev system and battery pack. Per the technician servicing the car, they stated that the hev warning light only illuminated when the hev battery reaches 15% charge (the point at which they have to replace it), this contradicts with the owner’s manual as well as counteracts the purpose of a warning lamp. Due to the nature of the design where the computer controls when the engine start/stops, the engine can damage itself before preventative action can be taken. For example, when the engine stalls due to water ingestion through the air filter and the oxygen sensor determines it cannot compensate, the engine will stall, but before the situation can be rectified, the computer attempted to restart the engine causing it to become hydro-locked. With my experience, I am convinced that the design of the car is flawed and is unreliable to drive in a heavy rain scenario which leaves it unusable several times a year. I have owned several hybrids in the past (2001 and 2005 Toyota prius) that I operated through the same conditions as your vehicle and I did not experience any problems with them. Additionally, with the Toyota, when the engine stalls against the computer’s control (e. G. : running out of fuel), the hev and engine warning light both illuminated and the “ready light was DE-illuminated.
Car had a recall for the oxygen sensors and was taken care of. However, it has been in the shop 3 other times to have the oxygen sensors replaced and I just had another go out past the warranty period. I have also had the car 'slam' into a lower gear while on the expressway and the check engine light came on. When I take it they say it is a transmission sensor and replace it. This has done it five times!! it is very scary when it does this. The car is on it's fourth battery and it has 80,000 on the odometer. I have had numerous other problems too. Now it just will not start, it is going to an independent shop this time. This car has been one big headache!!!.

I am totally disgusted with my car. I have a 2000 Hyundai Sonata. I bought it in 2002. In 2002 I had to have 2 of my oxygen sensors replaced due to a recall. Then the following year my check engine light came on and I had to have another oxygen sensor replaced. Two weeks after that my check engine light came on again and I had to have my fourth oxygen sensor replaced. Now this year August 2005 my check engine light is on again and now this time my rpm's are sticking and idling high, my transmission is not going into gear right, and my car is stalling. Since I have had this car I have also had to have my pulley replaced, my airbag harness fixed, two of my windows have broke, and my stereo broke when I first bought my car. Now I can't drive my car at all and I don't have the money to get it fixed. I have seen a lot of complaints about the 2000 Hyundai Sonata and I think the manufacturer better do something for all of us quick or they are going to have a lot of lawsuits on their hands.
I have a 2002 Hyundai Sonata that I bought new in April of 2002. As of March of this year at 27,700 miles, it has been in the shop for the check engine light 5 separate times. The first time it showed an oxygen sensor. Within the next 100 miles it was on again, this time it was an evap code and they said it was the fuel pump seal so they tightened it. Within another 100 miles it came on again and was another oxygen sensor. It came on again after about 3 months (and around 9,000 miles) and this time it was the evap code again and they said that it was the fuel cap. This had to be ordered and I called back after three weeks and someone had forgot to order it so it after all took 3 months to replace it. In the meantime the car was detailed and the company unhooked the battery, the check engine light stayed off for a little over a month (the light was on when it went to the detail company). So the fuel cap was eventually replaced and the light came on again within 100 miles after. This time it was 3 different codes. One for another oxygen sensor, one for a throttle positioning sensor, and one for a fuel increment sensor. I am at 47,800 miles now and I am told that it could take a few months to get the oxygen sensor due to Hyundai updating the sensor due to a defect. By the time my car is fixed, this time the warranty will more than likely be up or close to it and all I can get from Hyundai is that they will fix it up to the 60,000 mile warranty and if the light comes on after that it is my problem. They say it is not a concern due to something different every time.
