Failure Date: 11/01/2008

The contact owns a 2007 Hyundai Tiburon. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer because he felt that there was an issue with the rpm's. After leaving the vehicle at the dealer for two days, he was informed that the rpm's had been replaced and that there was an issue with the clutch in the vehicle. Through online research, he found numerous complaints for the same failure as his year, make, and model vehicle. He presented his findings to the dealer and was informed that nothing could be done. The contact called the manufacturer and was informed that he would be responsible for the repair costs. The current and failure mileages were 37,000. Updated 12/30/08 updated 01/02/09. 3 Clutch problem of the 2003 Hyundai Tiburon

Failure Date: 05/27/2008

2003 Hyundai Tiburon gt v6 6-speed manual transmission. The clutch failed after only 30000 miles. I have driven cars with manual transmissions for 20 years. This one was no abused or used for racing. I have never had a clutch go out after so few miles. The problem seem to be caused by a defect in the design of the clutch system. There is a restrictor valve that does not allow the clutch to fully engage until 1 second after the clutch pedal is fully released. This appears to be a wide scale problem. There are posts all over the internet about this defect.

4 Clutch problem of the 2003 Hyundai Tiburon

Failure Date: 04/23/2008

Ok so this is what's going on and has sounded like it has been going on for a while I am 18 and just made a new purchase of a 2003 Hyundai Tiburon gt 5 speed it is the first car I have really ever really babied and I have only had it for 3 weeks I have not drove the car hard or anything and the clutch is slipping bad the car ran and drove fine when I bought the car now im looking at a 2,000 dollar charge for something that shouldn't even have went wrong in the first place I leave for the army in July 2008 and now I don't want to drive my car because I am afraid to mess anything else up on it so I am just kind of stuck looking at and nice red car that isn't drivable and I called Hyundai and they said its my problem. There should be something done about this. . . . .

5 Clutch problem of the 2007 Hyundai Tiburon

Failure Date: 03/24/2008

At 11,985 miles the clutch on our 2007 Hyundai Tiburon went out. We have been told it is because of the driver. It will cost ~$1,200 to replace, because clutches are not covered by warranty. I did some investigating on line and it appears that Hyundai has a major problem with the clutch they install on these cars. Some investigating needs to be done, as clutches tend to go out when one is driving. This can lead to an accident. (I was nearly hit driving our car to the dealership because the clutch would not engage).

6 Clutch problem of the 2006 Hyundai Tiburon

Failure Date: 03/10/2008

2006 Hyundai Tiburon se clutch malfunctioning and failure. Poor quality and deformed parts used. Warranty classifies parts as "wear parts. " I took my car in for its scheduled maintenance visit to r. C. Hyundai in roswell, GA. After 2 days I experienced acceleration issues and went back to r. C. Dealership. On duty technician informed me the clutch was the source of the problem and it would cost me 2,000. 00+ usd. When I asked why I was told this was covered by warranty during the original sales process ireceived inconclusive answers. After a little internet research I discovered: a class action pending stemming from 03-04 Hyundai Tiburon's choice of clutch parts (fly wheel to be specific) and numerous post on edmunds car space ( over 5 pages of enraged Hyundai Tiburon 03-07 owners') Hyundai refuses to acknowledge the faulty, deformed and defective parts that make up its clutch and continue charging hard working, honest people 2,000. 00 to fix a problem they know exists and will continue to fail. Blaming it on how the car is driven is both a shameful business practice and crime against consumers everywhere.

7 Clutch problem of the 2003 Hyundai Tiburon

Failure Date: 03/05/2008

Bad clutch.

8 Clutch problem of the 2003 Hyundai Tiburon

Failure Date: 02/14/2008

I have a 2003 Hyundai Tiburon gt (6 speed manual transmission) that has experienced a premature clutch failure. The car has only 45,000 miles on it, and I drive it quite conservatively. The failure is not from "normal wear and tear". There are design defects that directly lead to this (and many other) premature failures. I have been quoted $2100 in repairs (clutch, pressure plate, throw-out bearing, and flywheel + labor) by the dealer. I am looking into alternative solutions--including trading my car in--as I am not confident the defects will be corrected.

9 Clutch problem of the 2003 Hyundai Tiburon

Failure Date: 02/10/2008

My car is an 03 Hyundai Tiburon. It was manufactured on July 23, 2002. I was reading on newtiburon. Com that there was a class action complaint for cars manufactured before April of 2003, in reference to the clutches going bad. Now I bought my car used and the owner before said the clutch was replaced at 45,000 miles. The car now has 54,000 miles on it and the clutch grabs really hard and sometimes is hard to drive. I have to release the clutch very slow in order for the car not to jerk hard. In the newtiburon. Com forum they were saying some part was bad and can be replaced by the dealer. I was just wondering if my car has the bad part and should be replaced.

10 Clutch problem of the 2003 Hyundai Tiburon

Failure Date: 02/08/2008

I am having problems with the clutch. It is having trouble engaging and disengaging. The clutch does this when the engine is cold and even at times when it is not cold. I took it to the dealership and they replaced the master cylinder due to defect but claimed that the clutch also needed to be replaced due to wear. My car had 59,800 miles when it took it in for the problem. After the fix it still has the same problem.

11 Clutch problem of the 2006 Hyundai Tiburon

Failure Date: 01/09/2008

2006 Hyundai Tiburon clutch failure. We noticed that the clutch was starting to slip. Shifter started to get stuck in gear. Took to dealership where purchased and was told that it was going to cost 2000. 00 to replace the clutch, they also proceed to question me saying that it appears that the car has been raced. We do not race our vehicles. In reading other complaints, this seems to be an on going problem with the standard transmissions in the Hyundai's. I am to wonder if this make and model of vehicle should continue on the market. In order for the dealership to uphold the warranty, you have to have the vehicle maintenance done at a Hyundai dealership and at the specified mileage. The maintenance is not cheap on this vehicle. Our vehicle is at 32,000 miles maintenance was to be done at 30,000 miles, we were unable to afford the almost 600. 00 for the maintenance. Now they want 2000. 00 to replace the clutch and fly wheel. Someone really needs to check into the manufacturing of this make and model.

12 Clutch problem of the 2003 Hyundai Tiburon

Failure Date: 01/03/2008

I have a 2003 Hyundai Tiburon. I had to have the clutch replaced 2 times in 2004. Once in Dec and Jan. I am now having to replace the clutch again in Jan of 2008. What can I do??.

13 Clutch problem of the 2004 Hyundai Tiburon

Failure Date: 12/23/2007

I have a 2004 Hyundai Tiburon gtv6 with 6-speed manual transmission. In 23rd December 2007. My car was making an odd smell. I was told by a mechanic it was the clutch going bad. I contacted Hyundai and was told due to normal wear and tear that it was my fault. At this time I had 29,500mi on my car. On the 17th January 2008 with 30,500mi on my car, the clutch is completely bad and has to be replaced. I nearly got t-boned by a truck during normal traffic because my clutch disengaged and I started slowing down. The truck stopped to help and I got my car home afterwards. Hyundai refused to honor there 10-year warranty on the car and I got stuck paying about $900 on a new clutch and flywheel for my car.

Failure Date: 12/07/2007

Hazard lights, signal lights, airbag lights, powers windows and clutch.

15 Clutch problem of the 2003 Hyundai Tiburon

Failure Date: 10/26/2007

My clutch has to be replaced at 39,000 miles. I drive my car well and cannot understand why this has to be replaced. The dealer has quoted me 1700 dollars and are saying that it is not covered under warranty because it is wear and tear. Reading all of the other complaints on this clutch it is apparent this is a defective part and the manufacturer should be replacing it for free! pretty sad that Hyundai boasts about their 10 year warranty but won't replace anything under it!.

16 Clutch problem of the 2005 Hyundai Tiburon

Failure Date: 10/24/2007

The contact owns a 2005 Hyundai Tiburon. Upon purchasing the vehicle, the clutch would stick intermittently. The manufacturer explained that the failure occurred because the vehicle was new. On October 24, 2007, the clutch locked up while driving 15 mph. The contact was eventually able to free the clutch and continue driving. The clutch failed completely and the dealer stated that it was not their responsibility because the vehicle was out of warranty. The contact was informed that if he took the vehicle to a third party, it would not be recognized by the dealer. The VIN and engine size were unknown. The current mileage was 24,790 and failure mileage was 24,746. Updated 12/12/2007 updated 12/12/07.

17 Clutch problem of the 2003 Hyundai Tiburon

Failure Date: 10/17/2007

I have a 2003 Hyundai Tiburon and my clutch and flywheel both failed at what I think is a little to early. It is driven with care and extremely well maintained. I had a new clutch put in by a professional transmission shop and did not replace the flywheel, just the clutch and hydraulics. Within one business week, my new clutch has failed for a second time and the dealership wants $800 just for the flywheel so I can then take back to the shop and have them install it with my new clutch!.

18 Clutch problem of the 2006 Hyundai Tiburon

Failure Date: 10/15/2007

On June 11, 2007 at 26,577 miles, I experienced on my way in to work while driving, a slight stick and a definite "click" sound from my clutch pedal. While at a traffic light I experienced complete clutch failure, the car would not go in to gear. The invoice from the dealership states "internal part on master clutch broken-remove and replace master clutch". On October 15, 2007, at 37,500 miles, there began a similar clutch pedal problem, later the rpms of the engine were increasing, however the gears were not engaging fully, another clutch failure in less than six months. After doing some research, I have found that there is not only a class action lawsuit against the Hyundai corporation for a defective clutch in the 2003 Hyundai Tiburon. (us district court orange county, California; case number 06cc00052) I have also found quite a few complaints not only of the clutch, but the Hyundai corporations refusal to honor it's own warranty with it's customers. It is in my opinion that this corporation lacks the integrity to monitor itself and I am asking the NHTSA to investigate this problem.

19 Clutch problem of the 2006 Hyundai Tiburon

Failure Date: 10/07/2007

Clutch master cylinder was found to be falling apart. Replaced by dealer in Dec. 2006. Clutch failed oct 2007. Vehicle inoperable. Dealer and manufacturer refusing to repair under warranty. Quoted $2,000 to repair clutch.

20 Clutch problem of the 2003 Hyundai Tiburon

Failure Date: 09/09/2007

Clutch slipping until the bearing eventually broke, clutch assembly was replaced but now it feels as if the clutch disengages and engages everytime I release the throttle even a bit. This problem does not go away.

21 Clutch problem of the 2006 Hyundai Tiburon

Failure Date: 08/29/2007

Approximately around 18,500 miles on my purchase-new 2006 Hyundai Tiburon se, I began to notice some clutch slippage when accelerating from a stand-still. Weeks later I had taken my car to the local dealership I purchased the car from to get the oil changed, and a routine inspection. At this time they found a small leak in the transmission, so they put some dye in it and asked me to come back a week later so they can track where it was. A week later I brought my car back and they said they wanted to replace the entire transmission, under warranty. I gave them the okay to do this. During the replacement process the clutch and flywheel was found to have 'hotspots' on it and was recommended to be replaced. I was already aware of possible clutch problems with the car before I purchased it, and was informed by the salesmen that they don't think there will be a problem and I would be taken care of. . 22 Clutch problem of the 2003 Hyundai Tiburon

Failure Date: 08/29/2007

Clutch failed at 44,000 miles after buying car used. Service department would not fix , stated it was wear and tear. Cost $1500 to fix. Airbag light stays on, past 65,000 so service department wont fix it unless I pay for it. Hatch back latch wont work, $200 to fix that. Headlights burn out every other month. Brought car to service center because of a noise in the front of car. Said they couldnt hear anything. 2000 miles over my warrentee brought car back because it was getting worse, said it was front wheel assembly and would cost $1000 to fix. During cold weather emergency brake sticks took it in and they couldnt find anything wrong, go figure. Seats wont latch sometimes after letting someone out from the back. Is there a end to the problems that I have with this Hyundai.

23 Clutch problem of the 2003 Hyundai Tiburon

Failure Date: 08/18/2007

The contact owns a 2003 Hyundai Tiburon. The contact stated that the clutch failed twice. The dealer previously replaced the clutch at the cost of $900. She researched the NHTSA website and discovered 180 complaints for this same failure. The current mileage was 47,500 and failure mileage was 20,000.

24 Clutch problem of the 2003 Hyundai Tiburon

Failure Date: 08/08/2007

Complained several times about malfunctioning clutch on 2003 Hyundai Tiburon which we purchased new, and also paid for an additional warranty, which we were told would pick up the cost of any repairs that were not covered under the mfg. Standard 100k bumper-to-bumper warranty. Each time we complained we were told that it was the way we were driving the vehicle. Clutch has gone out at 57k miles and now they say it is a wear item and not covered under any warranty and will cost $2000. 00 to fix. We were never told of the TSB 04-40-005 indicating deformed/defective clutch parts which should be replaced when customer brings vehicle in complaining of clutch problems. Car is sitting at dealership and we are waiting for a written denial of coverage from mfg. And a written estimate of cost from dealer before we proceed. However, we see that there are hundreds of complaints on this clutch system and a class action lawsuit has been filed against Hyundai in orange county superior court, case #06cc00052. There should be a recall for this item/vehicle before somebody gets killed or kills somebody else because they cannot control their vehicle due to the malfunctioning of this part.

25 Clutch problem of the 2003 Hyundai Tiburon

Failure Date: 07/31/2007

I purchased a 2003 Hyundai Tiburon gt with 6 speed manual transmission because of the advertised 100,000 mile power-train warranty. In 2005 the clutch and pressure plate failed and I returned it to the dealer for warranty service. I was informed that the clutch assembly was a "wear item", had probably been abused, and was not covered. I have driven hundreds of thousands of manual shift miles in several cars and never had a clutch failure. It was repaired at a cost of over $800 and not reimbursed by Hyundai. In July 2007, the clutch again malfunctioned and the clutch hydraulics and flywheel had to be replaced at a cost of over $1800. The company and dealers continue to claim that the failures are not the fault of the vehicle's design, but are rather the fault of the driver. My research on the NHTSA site shows over 650 nearly identical complaints from owners of 2003-2004 Hyundai Tiburons gt's and nearly none on 2005-2007. I believe that Hyundai knows of the faulty design on earlier models and has remedied the problem on later models but will not acknowledge it or rebate the repair costs to those owners that have had these catastrophic clutch assembly problems on 2003 models. A full investigation should be made into these fraudulent practices of Hyundai USA and restitution should be made to the injured owners of 2003 Hyundai gt's with manual transmissions.

26 Clutch problem of the 2006 Hyundai Tiburon

Failure Date: 07/01/2007

2006 Hyundai Tiburon clutch failure at 17,000 miles. Manufacturer say it is driving habit failure and not covered under their warranty. Seam to be a problems with many other customers.

27 Clutch problem of the 2005 Hyundai Tiburon

Failure Date: 06/18/2007

Clutch slippage on my 2005 Hyundai Tiburon se which I reported to my dealer at lax Hyundai before I reach 60,000 miles, I was then told that it was going to cost me upwards to 800 plus dollars just to have it replace. My car is warranted upto 100,000 miles under the hpp program which cover mostly all components on my vehicle. After researching the issue that I am having with my car which was purchased brand new, I discovered a compliant trend for the same problem with my car model beginning since it's introduction in 2003. Researching more into the problem there seems to be a defect in the clutch valve spring the prematurely wears out the clutch. When I took my car in for diagnosis the mechanic even stated that the clutches are bad and that he was shocked that my car lasted as long as it did on the original clutch, something that caused suspicion in how much Hyundai backs their own products.

28 Clutch problem of the 2003 Hyundai Tiburon

Failure Date: 06/15/2007

TSB recommending old clutch replacement which is garbage, clutch is garbage.

29 Clutch problem of the 2005 Hyundai Tiburon

Failure Date: 05/18/2007

I bought a 2005 Hyundai Tiburon gt manual transmission on may 18, 2007. The clutch failed the first day I bought the car. Car lot agreed to put new clutch in. Three months later the transmission bearings broke. I replaced flywheel and had transmission rebuilt. 2 months after that the bearings broke again. I had Hyundai do the work on the transmission rebuilt. I am out of pocket $2,000, not to mention the upside down amount I was when I had to get out from underneath this car, because I cannot afford to put $2,000 in the car every 3 months.

30 Clutch problem of the 2003 Hyundai Tiburon

Failure Date: 04/20/2007

Hi. I own a 2003 Hyundai Tiburon gt 2. 7 6 speed. The clutch went out at 18, 000 miles. I took it to the dealer with a copy of the class action lawsuit regarding the Tiburon clutch issue. They told me that it was my driving, and that they never heard of this problem. They said that it would be up to me to pay for this, which will be about $1600-2000 out of my pocket. I refused to pay for this.

33 Clutch problem of the 2006 Hyundai Tiburon

Failure Date: 02/02/2007

Bought a 2006 Tiburon, I drive the car to work and back lightly (no hard acceleration, racing etc). After 9000 miles the clutch suddenly went out, leaving me stranded on the road, needed to be towed into dealership, took 6 days to get the car back on the road, they replaced the entire clutch assembly. Dealership repaired under warranty. I'm having other issues with the car including uneven acceleration and high idling. The car isn't even a year old, wouldn't recommend this model to anyone.

The contact stated that in 11/06 the vehicle started having a loud noise from the engine area, and the vehicle was difficult to shift.
