Three problems related to steering gear box have been reported for the 1999 Jeep Cherokee. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
When turning right the steering locks & you can't turn at low speeds.
Steering dampener leaking causing front end to shake, dealer replaced dampener but it didn't correct the problem so the gear box was replaced.
The lower steering shaft failed and the steering gear was worn causing a catch in the steering wheel. Nlm.
