Six problems related to steering wheel have been reported for the 1999 Jeep Cherokee. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Was driving vehicle went into a spin, and hit another vehicle. Had tried to correct steering wheel, but it would not move. Took vehicle to dealership, mechanic could not locate cause of problem. But, did repair tie rod damaged due to crash. A few days later , steering locked up again while turning from one street into another.
Constant grinding/garbaling sound (heard in interior of vehicle) coming from transfer case linkage area. Can be heard at all speeds and seems to vary in intensity when make any kind of turn.
Steerings column has somtehing loose inside it. Can feel clunk in steering on initial acceleration, on broken pavement, and when coming to a stop. Can also feel the clunk through the brake pedal. There is no doubt, something is loose in the column. I am concerned about vehicle being safe to drive.
Steering wheel is stiffer and harder to maintain when going around a long curve. The wheel slips out of driver's hand.
While driving steering wheel completely disengaged from steering column, causing loss of vehicle control, cause unknown. Please give any further details.
The steering column was repaired with out the problem being corrected.
