After filling up the gas tank, vehicle will buck and stall while driving causing a significant hazard to the occupants. This occurs every time we fill up the tank. We stop filling after the first click so we do not over fill the vehicle. After reading, this appears to be a common issue.
Attempting to fill gas tank at gas station. Gas tank at about 1/4 full. Gas pump repeatedly shuts off while filling about every 0. 1 gallon. It takes 10-15 minutes to fill the tank. This first happened January 2020 but problem went away after several fill ups. I have the problem again in September 2020. Still happening. I live in northwest ohio.
Car stalls out while driving after filling gas tank (not topping it off). Transmission light comes on, all warnings come on, and car locks up. Sometimes you cannot put it in gear, and the steering wheel locks up. It will say "shift to park," but you cannot always do that. Sometimes when it stalls it will still be running, but will just go out of gear. This is a known problem, and Chrysler will not do anything about it. Yesterday, I was nearly rear-ended three times on an interstate in atlanta when my car suddenly stalled while I was in motion. Here is what one mechanic said: your vehicle has an issue with ventilation from the fuel pump, the gas has nowhere else to go but get sucked up towards the engine. The pump is failing, the charcoal canister is full of fuel, the evap system integrity module is full of fuel and the purge is pushing fuel into the intake which is drowning the motor and shutting it off. He said it is extremely dangerous to drive, and that he has seen this with the exact make and model of the car. I am terrified to drive my car, and it only has 36,000 miles on it. I, or someone else, will be killed because of this issue. This started while the car was still under warranty, and it took over a year to figure out what was going on. We have since called Chrysler every day to speak to a supervisor, and no one will return our calls. They refuse to acknowledge the situation, the severity of the situation, and our concerns. They said to contact you.
After hitting 50k miles on my vehicle I noticed following fueling it will begin to shudder and rpm's will go out of wack. Then rpm drops and car will give notice "shift to p then desired gear" message. Other lights will lite up and battery lite stays lit when this message is given. (I have a new battery so it can not be due to a bad one. ) the car will then stall and stop. This has happened both when stopped at intersections and while in motion and driving especially at lower speeds. Is a hazard as happens quickly and no warning so can not pull over. Have to put car in park and restart. This will continue to happen until tank is down to about 3/4 full. I do not over fill the tank. Had taken to dealership and they said they could not detect any problems. No messages were given to them during the check. This is very frustrating and a hazard on the road when you have cars behind you that have to stop suddenly. I am afraid to drive my car after filling up with gas for fear it will stop in the middle of the road and I will be injured in a rear end collision if car behind me is not paying attention. This has been happening for many months now. Every time I fill my vehicle up with gas and I do not overfill. I stop at the first "click" when pumping. It appears that there are several similar complaints on your website with the exact same problem. This should make for an easy recall to repair this problem before it becomes more serious than it is right now with someone really getting injured or worse! I should not have to be fearful of my own vehicle.
After filling the vehicle with gas it will hesitate and stall out while driving. It tells you to put the car in park and then you have to re crank it to shift back to drive. After the tank is about 3/4 full it stops stalling.
Filled up the gas tank and Jeep started stalling with in the first mile of driving, was thinking it might be the fuel cap so I tightened it and drove the Jeep for a few miles and everything went back to normal. Next time, after another fill up a month later, my car stalled when I stopped at a stop sign about a mile after fill up, I was able to pull over, and I checked the gas cap again to be sure it was tight and restart the engine, then while in motion going thru a turn at an intersection about 1/4 of mile down the road, it tried to stall again but luckily didn't completely shut off,and the transmission shifted to neutral, and the display said I needed to place Jeep in park then select drive. I was able to coast to the side of the road, and placed the shifter to neutral then back to drive. I proceeded down the road and the vehicle again shifted in to neutral and the display stated the same, to place in park then select drive. This all happened within two miles after filling up. I drove it anothe 60 miles or so after this with no problems. Had no real problems before this, other than the shifting lag everyone has complained about. All recalls have been addressed. Not sure if this is one problem causing the other or two separate problems. I will test it out on a back road and try to get a picture of the display if it happens again and plan a visit to the dealer for a service check after the holiday weekend.
I was at the gas station filling up when the gas pump handle would not allow gas to flow into the tank unless it was at a greatly reduced flow. The auto stop feature of the gas pump handle did not work at low flow and the gas spilled all over the side of the vehicle and onto the concrete area creating a fire hazard. The dealership has since told me that the car may have a defective valve. This problem goes back to the year 2012 and has not been addressed. This is evidenced by a simple web search. The spillage of gas is a fire and environmental hazard.
Further follow up from complaint 11280438. Complaint - vehicle stalls after filling up. After replacement of vapor canister, then 2 weeks later replacement of fuel tank, filled up again (to click on pump - did not top off) - car stalled again. Symptom's dissipate after ~15 miles of driving like before. Dealer now states I need to replace my fuel pump. Quote "this has to be it because we have replaced your complete fuel system with it". It is concerning that by filling up tank, car will stall. This past event was while I was trying to merge onto interstate and could not accelerate which left me in between two lanes where those lanes were at highway speed. Was able to limp to the shoulder to put in park and then back in drive (what the car information system was telling me to do). My vehicle has been in the shop 5 different times the month of November. 2 fuel injector's, vapor canister and fuel tank - with potential fuel pump next. I am dissatisfied with this vehicle for this on top of many blind spots in vehicle.
On multiple occasions after I've filled the gas tank, the car starts sputtering and even stalling within 1/4 mile of the gas station, check engine lights come on, and I get a warning to stop and put the car into park then choose the gear I want. After a few miles driving the problem goes away. The first time this happened in october2018 I had it towed to a Jeep service center, and was told it was a fuel pump problem (code p1ddd), but because the sputtering was no longer occurring, I refused repair at that time. Six weeks later on Dec 4th 2018 after filling the tank, it happened a second time; the car stalled completely as I was making a left-turn at an intersection in busy los angeles traffic, putting me at risk of a collision. I managed to put the car into park, then drive and sputtered through the intersection. Again, the problem resolved after a few miles driving to the Jeep service center and so I again refused repair. The same sputtering after filling the gas tank has happened occasionally over this year. Most recently the check engine light (cel) came on intermittently a few days before filling the tank; when the sputtering/stalling occurred this time I returned to a Jeep service center, because of the cel also being on around that time. I was told it was a fuel canister problem code (po456). . Read more...
After filling the tank, car stalls or computer shuts down, during operation, after taking foot of accelerator, for approx 15 miles. Dealer initially said it was was vapor canister and replaced. Next fill up after replacement, continued to stall after fill up. Dealership said they called fca and was told there was problems with rollover vent valve causing it so stick open (causing fuel to get into vapor system. Only fix at this point was to replace the fuel tank. Stalling indications happen as soon as foot is removed from accelerator (whether coasting or while stopped. Battery light will come on and dash board will advise to put car in park and then back in gear. Sometimes, it requires turning the ignition again to get car moving again. If coasting on interstate, this makes for a dangerous situation of car not responding to pick up speed during stop and go traffic. Documentation is service tickets for both vapor canister replacement as well as fuel tank replacement.
After filling gas tank, Jeep will unexpectedly lose power and shut off. This happens several times. Accelerating and pumping gas to keep it running will speed the process of returning to normal operation. Gas is never overfilled. Once pump shuts off no additional fuel is added at pump. Took to dealership. They charged over 900 to replace the ecm. Problem repeated on next fill up. This problem is widely reported on the internet even though dealership denies any knowledge of problem.
As I approached an intersection and pushed on the breaks the car stalled out. Warning lights came on. After restarting the car it stalled out again when I tried to break a second time. This has happened at least 4 times. The last time it happened, the car stalled out in the middle of a main roadway as I approached a red light; I was almost rear-ended. I tried to restart the car. Once I got it restarted I tried to put it in gear and the car bucket and stalled out again. I tried a number of times to restart the car and eventually got it started. I eventually got it into gear and started to drive off the roadway. The car drove very jittery and with little to no power. Most warning lights on the dash came on - 4wd inoperable; put car into gear and restart, service transmission, traction control problem, battery problem. I have had it to two dealerships. Once said it was the battery; I replaced it. The other first said it was oil consumption with the engine but when that turned out not to be the case the dealership and Chrysler/Jeep are telling me that this is a problem due to overfilling the gas and that the only fix is not to top off the gas tank. Really? this only started at @ 42,000 miles. Also, I don't think the gas was topped off each time this happened. I also live in a state where you cannot pump your own gas so if the gas station puts too much gas in the car stalls and creates a safety hazard? how much is too much gas? there is nothing in the car manual. There is no warning in and around the gas tank. This is a very serious problem and causes a very dangerous car to operate. There either needs to be a real fix for this problem or the cars need to be taken off the road.
After I fill up my gas tank, the car will stall when slowing (less than 30 mph) or idling multiple times over the first several miles of driving. The car starts shuddering, the engine light comes on, it stalls, says to shift to park, and then requires a restart. Sometimes it will not go into gear and everything seizes up, including the steering wheel. Sometimes a notification comes on about the transmission and all other components being inoperable. It only happens after filling up my tank - if I don't fill my tank all the way, it does not happen. Note that I do not "top off" my gas - I stop when the pump stops. It is really scary and really dangerous, as I stalled out on a merging interstate ramp and then on the interstate when traffic slowed this has been happening since June 2019.
Vehicle stalls while driving and idling after filling up. Dealer says it's because of overfilling the tank, even though I explained I was told not to do this the first time I had an issue and haven't since (over 1 year). Dealer says its the fuel pump and evap canister and will be $1,800 to replace. June marks 3 years that I've had this vehicle and this has happened 10+ times, and has had to towed to the dealership twice.
While filling the fuel tank the pump at the station kept shutting off. I changed pumps and the problem persisted. I was not able to place more than 3 gallons of fuel in the car over 10 minutes. I changed gas stations and have continued to have the issue. The car cannot be filled. It has been to 3 dealers and is still not repaired. The fuel in the filler tube is backing up and not allowing gas to get smoothly into the tank. Currently they cannot fix the issue although it is a registered known issue and does not affect all cars of this make, model and year there are plenty of complaints and Jeep is not fixing the cars without considerable expense to most owners.
After filling Jeep up with gas car stalls when driving lose of all control out of know where I see many forms online about the same problem someone is going to get heart and nobody knows if it's the gas tank or fuel pump a very dangerous situation specially it stops doing it after going for a little it happens every time.
After filling the gas tank, allowing nozzle to click off only once, the car runs for a minute or so then stalls, miss fires, and is hard to restart. It has died on the interstate on a few occasions, making it very unsafe . This also happens on city streets, stalling in traffic. This has occurred at least 12-15 times in the last 3 years.
The technician stated that the gas tank "went bad". Unable to fuel vehicle. Said this has happened to several Jeep Cherokee models. Recurring problem. Large cost to replace. Safety hazard when filling and possible major safety hazard when driving. Pressure issues inside tank.
When I'm filling up my tank, the pump keeps shutting off like the tank is full. The only way I can fill up is to wait there and fill it little by little and it keeps shutting off. I don't get it, it's not my first time pumping gas. It is at every gas station I go to, in and out of the state. I've tried to slow the intake down, turn it upside down, take the filler half way out, all the way in, nothing works. Never had this problem before with any cars I've owned. I've read people with the same year car have experienced this. Strange thing is, it didn't do it the first couple of fill ups. Bought the car in Feb 2018 and didn't happen the first few months. Out of the blue started happening and then stopped for a few months. Has since been doing it. (approx. 4-5 very long, annoying months).
The 2014 Jeep Cherokee completely stalls while driving with a message that states "must be in p to shift gears". The vehicle also stalls while driving after filling the gas tank, with the same message. The dealer cannot identify the problem. I've seen several other complaints from owners for the exact same thing that don't seem to be getting addressed. Failure to address this issue is a risk to those owning the vehicles as well as others on the roads and poses a major liability to the company if nothing is done to resolve the issue. I'm listing the most recent date, however this is not the first time it's happened.
After filling my tank with gas I turned onto a nearby roadway and felt my car sputtering and jerking. As I came to a slow stop at a stop light my car abruptly slammed to a stop and made a loud bang/slamming noise and prompted me to shift to park and restart the car. I followed these commands and the car would not move. As soon as I would shift out of park the loud slamming would occur again and I began to smell fumes so I stopped trying to follow the prompts. I put my car in neutral and pushed my car out of the moving traffic lanes and got it towed. The dealership claimed nothing is wrong with my vehicle and gave it back. I have experienced the same issue 3 times since. They replaced an evaporation pressure switch the second time I took my car in and this still has not fixed the issue. The last time the issue occurred I was slowing down on a highway in dense traffic and as traffic started moving again my gas pedal stopped working. I could not accelerate when I pressed the gas I only heard loud revving noises as my car coasted. . When I went to press the brakes and pull off the road I immediately heard the loud slamming noise and my car broke down again in a very unsafe location on the highway. I waited one hour and my car was able to restart and I slowly got it off the highway with my e-lights on. I will be taking it to the shop after the new year. . Again. Worst of all after looking into this issue online I see it is common among Jeep vehicles. Not just the Cherokee. Happens after I gas up. It is extremely unsafe as I have almost been rear ended at high speeds by other cars on the roadway. Has been listed in forums as somesort of rollover fuel valve. Please investigate before more serious injuries or even death occurs assuming that hasn't already happened. Also please note that since the work they did on 2nd visit to dealer I have had check gas cap and engine lights on.
My wife's 2014 Jeep Cherokee has 40k miles on it and about a month ago she took it in for service because it started shuddering/vibrating and then shut-off/stalled on her and displayed service transmission. We had it towed to a local dealer here in va and they said it was software recalls that addressed this issue. We took it back 2 more times to this same dealership and they second time they said conveniently that another software fix had come out to fix the issue but we had to pay for it regardless of having the extended warranty because as the service tech put it things break. The third time they told my wife it was her fault for over filling the gas tank while pumping since the issues seem to happen without fail every time she has filled the car up to a full tank since the first issue. Now we are taking it to another dealer for the same issue (4th time no fix).
Car stalls and completely shuts off. Told its gas and not to fill up gas tank. Not sure how this effects the transmission. Car jerks into gear or right before shutting off. Shakes, is loud. Does this with or without filling up the tank. Car had barely half a tank when I purchased it and it did it then. The very next day. I have an extended warranty. And I believe the power train warranty still applies but they won't fix the problem. Keeps saying its not pulling or storing codes. Engine light and service transmission light comes on and stays on. Not on the next next. Hard starts. Trans is slipping. It does this while I'm driving. Either at take off or while I'm slowing down to stop is when it shuts off. You can feel the trans slipping while driving. Car is noisy sometimes and slow to accelerate. Car acts like it going to stall while driving on city street or highway. Has shut off on both. I do mostly freeway driving. Was told there was a case involving make year and model of my car. I looked it up and there appears to be a class action lawsuit in regards to faulty transmission and Chrysler knew of this. I was not told about this when I purchased the vehicle and the vehicle has been doing this since I purchased it in September of this year. I have taken it in and called several times for the same thing. They updated the computer and replaced a part and now they are basically telling me they don't know what the problem is except that it may be from filling up my gas tank and it making the engine stall but no solution to fix the problem besides not filling my tank I am guessing. But no explanation on the trans. Just keeps saying its not storing or pulling codes. This is dangerous to be driving a car that can shut off at will with my kids in the car.
This started about a year ago when my vehicle 2015 Jeep Cherokee had apx 60000 miles, when I fill my gas tank I need to trickle the fuel in. If try to fill it too fast it will shut off the pump, making it apx 10-15 minutes to pump 10 or more gallons, when it is finely is full, it will over flow and "burp" out the fuel all over the side of the vehicle and the person filling the tank. I went to the dealer and they said I needed to replace the fuel tank and it was not under warranty. The fuel tank was on back order and would be 2 to 4 weeks. In the mean time the problem went away before the back ordered tank came in. Note the dealer never did call when the part came in if it did. I did not have the tank replace this lasted apx 6 months until the problem started again. This sounds like a manufacturers defect, that is dangerous (spilled fuel), environmentally bad and wasteful. I have spoken to other Jeep owners with the same problem and have hear about the same problem from several employees at the gas stations I have used. I would understand if there was a wearable part involved, but what can wear out on a fuel tank in 60000 miles and 2. 5 years. I believe this should be a Jeep recall and should be covered by Jeep.
Brought at in for Jeep service 3 times as it shakes violently, dashboard engine & transmission idiot lights turn on, car stalls. The 1st and 2nd time Jeep claimed it was due to recalls now they blame us for overfilling tank. We are adamant that we did not overfill. When gas tank was filled the pump nozzle was removed when it clicked and stopped. Now we are told we need a fuel pump module, emission monitor, carbon canister & celluloids at our expense of $1200+. Car is under warranty. This happened when slowing down at a light the 1st time on a city street, pulling into a parking space the 2nd time and pulling into driveway 3rd time. I contend that if the fuel pump module was not functioning properly perhaps this created a situation that would not allow the proper vacuum to build to let the gas station pump know the tank was full. No gas spilled out at the pump. We cannot have a vehicle that cannot be filled or that we can't trust is being read correctly by the gas pumps. Call backs from customer care are nearly non-existent. Car has been in the Jeep shop since February 28th 2017.
