1 Brake Foundation Components problem of the 1996 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 11/13/2002

Rear brakes locked on at least 25 occasions. Usually happens in first few minutes of driving, and when wet. Brakes were repaired by Dodge/Jeep dealer 2 months ago still locked. Checked by certified mechanic last week, could find nothing wrong. Yesterday morning at about 9:00 a. M. During steady rain, applied brakes at 55 miles per hour to slow vehicle for car in front that had applied brakes. Brakes locked and vehicle fish tailed to right, spun at least twice, tipped over and hit guard rail at least twice. I was extracted from vehicle with only minor cut to hand and glass in nostril. Vehicle is totaled. Earlier last year our 25 year old daughter applied brakes to slow down and similar incident happened, where she came to rest in a ditch. This has been a continuous problem. Subsequent to accident yesterday, I talked with two other owners of same type vehicle who experience same problem on a regular basis. Rear brakes lock, especially first thing in morning and when they are wet. Certified automobile mechanic suggested a component that controls hydraulic fluid to all brakes equally could be the problem. Would appreciate statistics on this problem if available, especially occurances where accidents resulted. Dt.

6 Brake Foundation Components problem of the 2001 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 09/11/2001

This Jeep has had problems since I first bought it. I questioned the dealer about these problems as they arose. I was made to feel that "all these things" are perfectly natural. This Jeep cannot even back up my driveway without squealing, tires and smoking the tires, no matter how slowly I try to go up it. I do not feel safe in this vehicle and would like Jeep Chrysler to take this vehicle back. I cannot put into 2000 characters all the problems I have had with this vehicle. I have an 11 year old child and thought I was buying reliable transportation. I am very disappointed in the reliablility and the handling of this vehicle. I am afraid to take it on a trip for fear it will quit on me again and strand me in an unsafe place. I have never owned a new vehicle like this before that put the fear of the devil in me like this Jeep does. We live in the northeast and should never have to be stranded or put on hold with Chrysler emergency roadside assistance for 29 minutes. It took me 3 1/2 hours to warm up. I had severe frostbite due to the mechanical failure I had to endure.

I was traveling on a straight road heading east, I glance off to the left only a glance and as I looked in front of me I could see two cars in front of me one came to a stop to turn and the other notice the unsual stop and stopped. I was behind and had about thirty feet space in front of me to stop. I placed both feet on the brakes and pulled up the hand brakes to stop my Jeep, but it would stop and glided into the rear of the car in front of me who in term hit the car in front of him. Both cars are ok, the first car I hit had a tire on the rear with burst my radiator. The car in front of that car had a little dent on the trunk. I think that this accident could have been avoided because I stud on the brakes and also used the hand brakes. Please advise. .

12 Brake Foundation Components problem of the 1997 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 04/21/2000

After vehicle is parked in rainy weather, the brakes are extremely "grabby". During a moderate effort stop, the brakes locked and vehicle went into a skid (locked tires). This has been a problem since new. Had dealer look at this problem while under warranty and they found nothing wrong. Brakes become less grabby if brakes are applied momentarily while driving (throttle and brake applied at same time) for 5 to 10 seconds. This leads me to believe that there is a corrosion build up that is worn away after brakes are applied several times. A panic stop under grabby conditions would almost certainly result in an accident!.

The water pump went out on way out of town. White smoke poured out from behind the Jeep. We immediately pulled over and used our phone to call for help. We were told from a mechanic that it sounded as if the water pump went out. We waited for the Jeep to cool off, then added water to the radiator. We were able to drive at 35 mph until we found a service station to pull over at. At that time the technician told us that it was indeed the water pump and there was no more that could be done that day (Saturday-5:00p. M. ). We got our vehicle towed back home to lafayette, la. The next morning and at that time the towing/service technician also said it looked as if the engine head gasket was blown. Is that common for this vehicle with this milage? also, the brakes went out and we had them fixed a month ago at lafayette motors inc. Could they have known about the water pump or is that impossible? also, was there supposed to be any warning as a check engine light? we got no warning, but the smoke pouring out. ( dot number: ).
