Bought this vehicle not knowing of the gas tank design problem and now im stuck with a vehicle that I don't dare to drive or sell.
The contact owns a 1998 Jeep Cherokee. The vehicle was equipped with a plastic fuel tank located near the rear bumper. A trailer hitch had not been installed by the manufacturer. The manufacturer was not notified. The contact had not experienced a failure.
Have received a notification (several months back) that there is a recall on the fuel tank. Impact explosion risk. Every time we call the local dealers--we have tried several--none of them have a resolution, or they say they don't have the parts. When is this going to be addressed?.

My only complaint is that after I received a notice months ago that there was a safety recall on my vehicle reference the fuel tank could experience a fuel leak during a collision, I have had no response from the capital Chrysler Dodge Jeep dealership located in at 200 waterfield ridge place, garner, nc 27592. Phone number is 919-582-0202. I've called them twice and I was told the parts were not in and I felt like there was ample time for the parts to arrive.
I have been informed by Chrysler via phone conversation is not recalling my vehicle. The 1998-2004 were listed as having severe design flaw with the gas tank located near the rear end and prone to impact explosions. Chrysler stated my vehicle did not qualify for recall since I did not have a tow hitch installed and it was not a 1993-1998 vehicle. 1. If my vehicle has a unprotected gas tank and over 250 vehicles have caught fire on impact why is my car not going to get a protective guard ( this was done on other vehicles that owners complained while under warranty) 2. How is a tow hitch going to stop a back end collision? 3. Why is the design after 2004 of the gas tank not located so close to rear end. If the location isn't a safety concern it shouldn't have needed to be relocated. Chrysler fought this recall for years and ntsa allowed it until a petition was circulated on change. Org to have model years 1998-2004 cars recalled. Could it be the vehicles Chrysler will fix are even still on the road and that is why they are eager to fix those. I am stuck with a car cannot be sold or drive. The defect doen't just hurt me but the poor person who would hit me and risk an explosion. Chysler must be held acountable!.

I was parked in my lot and a neighbor dropped a cigarette behind my 1999 Jeep. There was ungodly gas smell and the puddle of gas that is leaking from tank ignighted. I was luckily enough that I caught it at that time or it would have exploded. I just bought it and never smelled gas or thought the tank was leaking. I had to spenleaking. It is going to cost over 500 dollars for this to be fixed plus a tow bar. Please help me to see if Jeep company is responsible due to recall.

The contact owns a 1993 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that after refueling, gasoline leaked from the fuel tank. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 193,000.
It started with the lights turning off when I hit a bump. The whole Jeep would go dark. Instrument panel, overhead lights, driving lights, all of them! then after parking the Jeep, day or night, the alarm system would go off all by itself. The door switches locking and unlocking while I was driving down the road. Then there was the radio that would turn on and off by itself. Then the windows decided to stop going up and down. When I would start the Jeep the instrument panel gauges wouldn't move, turn on. So, I would turn off the Jeep and restart it. Some of the gauges, would turn on but others, would not, like the fuel tank gage, speedometer gage. During the summer months, there would be a puddle of water on the passenger side floor board. I still to this day don't know what caused it to happen every day and each time it was turned on. Then there is the transmission and rear end that started having problems. It started to slip out of gear and the rear end made a noise. I had all the oil levels checked out, but still it would happen. I do recall getting a flyer in the mail, regarding a recall, but it also said that the dealer, did not have the parts to fix the problem. Why would you send out a flyer that you have no way of fixing because you can't get the part's? ! and are you even concerned about the worry you put me through? it became another reason to park the Jeep. How could you do. This, to so many people? with all these strange things happening to the Jeep, I had to do what was best for my safety, as well as, those who were on the road driving around me. I just couldn't live with myself, knowing that I could have cost someone or myself injury or death, by having the Jeep on the road knowing it was having so many problems. It has now been close to three-years since the last time I drove it.
After recall repairs 97v194002 on fuel tank sending unit has been performed consumer was still having the same problems. Ts.

Consumer states that the gas gauge in the vehicle is defective, the gauge will read that the fuel tank is full but then the consumer runs out of gas.
The vehicles gas guage is inacurate and shows more fuel than actually in tank. There has been other recalls for the fuel sending unit for this vehicle, however Chrysler says my manufacture date don' t fall in the recalls time frame.
My 1997 Jeep Cherokee gas guage is not working properly. When it gets to a quarter of a tank your really on empty. I see that there has been 3 recalls for this problem, however according to my Chrysler dealer my vehicle is not included in any of these recalls.
Consumer was traveling 25mph and without prior warning vehicle ran out of fuel. But, the gas gauge was saying a half of tank. Dealership was aware of problem.

I have had multiple problems with my gas gauge giving erradic readings. At times it has read that I am out of gas when I had a full tank. If I turn the car off and restart it the problem is usually resolved. I would like to have the problem fixed before I end up on the side of the road with no gas. I also have a sound coming out of the air conditioner that sounds like a gurgling or bubbling sound. I would like to know if this is a common problem or a normal sound.
I took the car to the dealer on thornton road called Chrysler and they originally stopped the car from saying it had no gas on a full tank and reading 0mph when traveling 75 mph. Then months later the car began to read 0 gas after I filled up the tank. The gas reading is always wrong.
Fuel tank will register a half of tank and light up like there was no gasoline inside of vehicle. Dealership was aware of problem.
Fuel light does not come on when vehicle needs gas, runs out of gas at a quarter tank. The fuel warning light failed while consumer was traveling.
Jeep ran out of gas while gauge on dashboard showed tank at 1/4 full (no one hurt, pulled to side of road safely). Apparently there was a recall for this part for the 1997 Cherokee models, but the recall was never extended for 1998 models. Had part fixed at local dealership (car still under original warranty), but dealership said that they never saw this problem with 1998 models.
Fuel gauge moves up and down while driving. I can never determine how much fuel I have in the tank at any given time. Also, the electrical system causes the power locks not to work properly on hot/humid days. Dealer could not fix locks successfully.
Fuel gauge drops past empty even with gas in tank, sits for awhile then registers level.
The gas gauge showed that the truck had a half of a tank of gas when the truck stopped in the middle of the highway and was hit by a tractor trailer. Contacted the manufacturer, and was told they didn't have parts to fix truck. Recall #97v194.
Car ran out of gas with gauge reading just below 1/4 tank. We cannot rely on gauge for information. When it first occured, dealer claimed there was going to be a recall on gauge. Over a year later we still have a malfunctioning gauge.
Gas gauge malfunctioned; failed to indicate that vehicle had less than a quarter tank of gas was empty of gas while the gas gauge indicated that there was enough gas, causing vehicle to stall.
Driving 65mph when vehicle started to hesitate & stalled on highway in the middle lane & had coasted to side of road. Noticed gauge showing 1/4 tank of gas. Tow driver said vehicle was out of gas.
Driving vehicle about 35mph when it ran out of gas. Gas gauge had shown 1/4 tank of gas when it happened.
Consumer exprienced false indications of gas gauge twice. She purchased vehicle January 1997, and on Aug. 19-97, she ran out of gas when indicator showed approximately one-eighth full. Again on Aug. 25/97, the indicator showed one-fourth full. The Jeep shut down on freeway. Consumer waited 15 minutes Jeep started, pulled to the side of road and shut down again. They put 2-5dollars of gas in Jeep, drove to gas station. Jeep took only $10. 00 of gas and started to spill out of tank. The indicator showed half-full. The next day she drove to gas station, tank took $25. 00 more and indicator showed full.
Dp97003, faulty gas gauge indicator; gas gauge showed 1/8 of a tank when the tank was actually empty, causing owner to run out of gas on highway. Next time gas indicator showed 3/8 of a tank when in fact it was empty. This happened on October 28, 1997. Dealer is aware of problem, but problem has not been corrected.
Gas gauge indicated that gas tank wa s3/8th full. The vehicle cut off without any warning. There is a low fuel warning light and buzzer, but neither came on.
Driving vehicle 60mph when it ran out of gas; gas gauge indcates still had over 1/4 tank; no warning light appeared or anything to indicate low on gas; called dealer & informed knew what problem was. Dealer said will repair gas gauge problem.
Fuel tank: faulty gas gauge. Driving on highway and the vehicle just died in the fast lane with no warning . There was no gas in the vehicle, it was reading between 1/4 and 1/2 tank.
The defective sensor in the fuel tank caused to have a faulty gas gauge indictor to appear. The gas tank has more gas than is actually in the tank, resulting in stalling on the highway.
While driving at any time vehicle will run out of gas. However, gas gauge will will indicate that there is a full tank of gas.
Dp97-003; defective gas gauge indicator can make it appear that the gas tank has more gas than actually is in the tank, which can cause a accident if the vehicle was to stall.
The gas gauge registers a quarter full, and the computer registers that there is approximately 63 miles left before running out of gas. The fuel tank sending unit has been replaced.
