Jeep Compass owners have reported 39 problems related to other fuel system tank filling/charging (under the other fuel system category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
I was filling up my gas tank, the automatic stop on the gas pump never shut off. Gas began spilling out of my car onto the ground. I placed the gas pump back and attempt ed to start my car, my car started but shut off right after signaling my oil was low. I just got my oil changed a week before. My car is now at the shop and I am out of pocket to fix this issue. This was a brand new car and it continues to stall and won't hold a charge. After searching this issue it seems to be a common issue with this vehicle. Also I am told by the dealership that my warranty will not cover this issue.

Vehicle stalls out after filling gas tank with fuel. It stalls while idling in park and it stalls while driving in traffic and when stopped with foot on the brake. After rome online searching, the problem seems to be the vapor/liquid separator valve in the top of the fuel tank not stopping the charcoal filter from being flooded with fuel. This has happened numerous times in the month since I purchased the vehicle. It last happened on 09/10/2020.

Unable to fuel vehicle. Gasoline refuel stops after 1/4 gallon is pumped. Gas sprays back on person filling if you are not expecting the splash. Jeep indicates that this vehicle is not covered under recall m11, as it was built on Feb 1, 2012 and the window for recall was December 20, 2011 through January 5, 2012. According to the VIN, my vehicle is within 200 vehicles of the recall. Jeep is replacing my gas tank as a cost of over $1500.

Gas tank is not filling properly and is gurgling when filled. Known recall already published but for some reason it is not being associated with my VIN.
After purchasing my new/used Compass from a dealer in town I went to fill the gas tank up. Not really a problem this time filling the tank but upon stating the vehicle it started to stall shake , spit, and sputter down the road after only about a 1/10 of a mile. During this time of stall the steering became almost impossible to turn while driving towards oncoming traffic . This wasnt the only time it done this . . . . No every time I go to fill up the tank with gas it does the same thing and acts the same way it straightens up after running a few miles (if it stays running ) or restarting the engine. Lately it takes me about a half an hour to fill the tank because the pump shuts off like it is about to over-spill except the tank is empty and it isn't the pump because it does this at every gas station I come to now. The safety factor here is the stalling while in motion without warning loosing control of where my car is going is a safety hazard and this needs to be address before a head on collision.

Jeep stalled after filling it with gas. Steering wheel locks up, due to overflow of gas. Fix would require replacing whole gas tank and system.

After filling up the gas tank with fuel, the Jeep will begin to stutter and the engine will die. Sometimes it happens immediately but other times it takes a few minutes and will happen while in traffic. After the intial stuttering and dying, the car runs fine after restarting but this happens with every fuel fill-up.

Car stalls a few times after filling up gas tank. Then it runs fine. Happens right after you leave gas station, in motion or at idle .
While driving, cars engine shut off. I would try to start it, sometimes it would start back up again I would drive it and then the engine would shut off and slowly stop moving. Car was diagnosed with the engine code p0335 and p0339 crankshaft position sensor malfunction/intermittent. Within the same week of having it replaced, now I'm having issues filling the tank with gas. Gas pump stops filling every 0. 2 gallons and clicks. Tried moving the gas pump in different positions but still won't fill. Gas ends up bubbling and overflows even though the tank is only at a quarter tank. Looks like this is very common with Jeep Compasses. It's either the fuel tank transfer tube or need to get the whole gas tank replaced.
Stalled after filling up with gas. The mechanic was not sure what the problem was but after fixing what they thought it may be. $500 dollars latter. It is still stalled after I filled up. Very scary crossing 4 lane's of traffic after your car stalled, starts right back, then stalled again. Now they are tell it may be in the gas tank. I don't have money for all the guessing. Something needs to be done!.
Filled tank and car stalled while driving away three times (after driving a short distance) called for a tow and taken to mechanic where they couldn't identify the problem. Then again, approximately three months later, stalled after filling the gas tank while making a left out of the gas station across traffic. Quickly restarted the car, it bucked as though about to stall after another 3/4 mile, and then ran fine. Largest concern is directly after fill up, but there is frequently a buck/hesitation when accelerating as well.
After filling the tank with gas, the vehicle will shut off after about 1/8 of a mile. It will just stall out and lose steering and lights.
Car stalls after you fill up the gas tank and drive away from the gas station. If you come to stop and/or idol within 5 minutes of filling up your car tank or coasting along it will stall.
Car stalls after filling up gas tank. . . Apparently this is a known issue and is happening to my daughters car and she was almost in a bad accident due to the car stalling when pulling out of a wawa gas station. There is apparently a need to replace the fuel tank due to a vapor lock issue which Chrysler is aware of and is happening in more then one type of their vehicles. . . This is a dangerous issue that if not recalled and the company is held accountable will lead to death.
I bought this car for my daughter used and the fuel mileage was poor. I have had this car to multiple shops and even a Dodge dealer who did not diagnose the problem correctly. I found a new garage that was very honest and they found that the valve inside the gas tank that controls where the fuel gets transferred to was faulty. This caused gas to be sent to the catalytic converter and vapors to be sent to the engine causing the car to stall within a 1/8 a 1/2 of a mile after filling the tank. The car would basically shut down and stall out causing control issues. This also caused damage to the converters and also the coal filter on the gas tank. It has taken many dealers to find one that could diagnose the problem and after about $3000 in repairs it is finally being fixed. This fault in the valve could cause a fire with heat in the converter and is very dangerous. I have seen a lot of information online with other Dodge Compass customers having this problem and the only way to fix it, is to replace the gas tank. The other option is to never fill up your gas tank. This is a safety concern that I believe should be looked into.
Car stalls after filling tank every time. Runs rough then stalls and power steering cuts out, locks up on the road. When restarted it stalls again several times. Very dangerous on the highway in a heavy traffic.
Our 2007 Jeep Compass has been stalling completely (engine shuts off) shortly after we fill up the gas tank. This issue has been occurring for around one year. It has happened while driving or stopped at a traffic light, less than a mile from the gas station, usually within a few minutes of pumping the gas. We fear filling up the tank to the top because the car has stalled in lanes of traffic. In the better cases, it stalls at a red light. This is a dangerous situation. We were encouraged to file this report after corresponding online with other Jeep owners who experienced this exact same issue.
Car stalls after refueling. Problem begins a few minutes after filling the tank. I have to sit at the gas station and try keeping it running before leaving, it is not safe in traffic. It only does it after refueling. I am told I need to replace the gas tank to correct the problem. They tell me gas is going back into the charcoal canister messing with the computer. A bad valve in the gas tank, requiring the entire gas tank to be replaced. I have been doing some research on this issue and finding a lot of people having the same issue it is not just a Jeep Compass issue.
After filling the fuel tank, vehicle, runs rough/ stalls puling into traffic . Problem dissipates after several minutes of driving until the next fill up where the issue repeats. There are multiple entries of the same issue on the internet. This is a safety issue also affect the Jeep patriots, which also needs to be investigated. . Read more...
Car stalls after filling the gas tank.
When I fill up the gas tank on my 2007 Jeep Compass it stalls several times over the next few miles. I've read the blogs on the web and it appears to be a failure of the fuel tank rollover vavle. The only fix apparently is to replace the gas tank at a cost of approximately $1,2000. I just bought this car for my 16 year old daughter and it has stopped on her in traffic twice after filling up the tank. Luckily she escaped being hit by an oncoming car. This is so wrong! this is a defect and a recall needs to be established to fix this issue.
Vehicle stalls or will not accelerate, engine runs rough, after filling up tank with gasoline. Problem goes away after several minutes of driving. Creates a dangerous and safety issue. Happens at every time fuel tank is filled. There seems to be many similar complaints on this same issue. Nhtsa should investigate.
Gas tank want take gas when filling tank keep shutting off, I was told by dealer it was a valve in the tank.
Having problems when fueling the vehicle. The pump constantly cuts out and once you do get gas in the tank after filling up, the car hesitates and actually stalls out as you drive - . Has stalled 3 times in 1 day and several other times. The fueling issues have been going on for several months, but now the stalling and hesitation of motor issue is safety issue.
After filling the fuel tank this vehicle will stall. This happens routinely following a fuel tank fill-up and is extremely dangerous. There are many concerns on the world wide web of Jeep Compass and patriot owners experiencing the same issue without resolve. Many people are suggesting that the gas tank, charcoal filter and roll-over valve need to be replaced to resolve, which comes at a price of $2000+ per vehicle. This notification of a problem is proactive and should be addressed prior to becoming reactive to injuries or fatalities.
This vehicle stalls after filling up tank, you fill the tank and a couple miles down the road it will stall, then it is good until next fill up. This is my wifes car and im afraid for her since she takes the express way all the time.
After filling the fuel tank on my Jeep Compass, it goes about two miles then it stalls. . . . . After some research this a common problem on these. . . . I don't understand why no safety recall. . . Someone is going get hurt. . . . The vehicle loses all power and stalls out.
When filling the fuel tank, the car will stall after the gas nozzle has clicked off that the tank is full. Upon restarting the vehicle (after a few tries) and beginning to drive, the car will lurch and sputter within a few seconds to minutes of leaving the gas station. Within 5 minutes of getting fuel, all problems seem to stop and car operates fine until the next time you fill the fuel tank.

The contact owns a 2007 Jeep Compass. While driving 25 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. The failure only occurred after filling the fuel tank. The failure recurred numerous times. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 82,000.
When filling up my gas tank (after longer trips 75+miles) the car will stall then die within feet of leaving the gas station. The car will buck and jump forward to prevent itself from stalling / dying after the fill up. Usually I am filling up with the fuel gauge 1 gallon from empty. I believed it was just air in the fuel lines, but for this to happen when the vehicle is waiting at a stop light or pulling out of the gas station, I am now concerned it is not just air in the fuel in lines. Please provide information as what to do, and fix this! many other people have experienced this while in traffic and its a dangerous problem!.
Gas tank will not take fuel. When filling it will only take about 0. 3 gallons before stopping or spraying out. Mechanic said it might be ventilation system.
Stalls or hesitates after filling the tank. Once gas level goes down a little the problem disappears. Faulty vapor/liquid separator valve located at the top of the fuel tank. Car stalls and steering wheel locks up. Starts back up with no problem but is dangerous if this happens on highway or in heavy traffic.
Car stalls after filling tank ( not overfilling ) . Runs rough then stalls and power steering cuts out locks up on road.
Update to complaint. Jeep dealer just called and they are replacing the fuel tank and charcoal canister was told this was a common issue and they had seen it before . The rollover valve in the fuel tank was bad and sticking open allowing fuel to dump into the evap system filling the charcoal canister with gas causing the stall . This is a major safety issue since a faulty valve wont shut off in the event of a crash causing a fire and can also cause a accident from stalling in traffic while in motion and the steering locking up. I have been in the auto repair business for 30 years at a dealership and seen a lot of issues but NHTSA really need to address this problem before someone is killed if they have not already. Jeep Compass stalls after refueling in motion on highway, steering locks up when car stalls and makes Jeep uncontrollable. Had Jeep towed to dealer and they found a bad charcoal canister was "full of fuel" replaced canister drove for one week and refueled managed to go 1 mile and Jeep stalled again at about 45 mph . Got Jeep stopped and restarted managed to get the last 1/2 mile home and it stalled again pulling in drive way and almost ran thru the front of my house before stopping. Extremely unsafe car returning back to the dealer service dept for the 3rd time . After reading online I have found this to be a common issue on the Jeep Compass some resulting in accidents from loss of control. I am finding the rollover valve is bad allowing fuel to be pushed back thru the evap system causing the stall.
Engine stall after fueling. After filling tank the engine will stall when in motion on highway was told by dealer there was a design flaw in the evap system purge control valve that allows fuel to enter the charcoal canister if you fill the tank when fueling. When this happens the Jeep will stall when in motion on the highway or city traffic and the steering is non responsive major safety issue Jeep is aware of the problem and has a service bulletin out on it but offers no fix other than do not fill up your tank. This almost resulted in a major accident on interstate 95 on 11/14/2015 this need to be a recall it is not a isolated problem read any google search on line and there are thousand of owners with the same issue trying to find out what I wrong and a fix.
