Jeep Compass owners have reported 45 problems related to other fuel system tank assembly (under the other fuel system category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
When putting fuel in the gas tank, the pump will kick off and fuel will splash out on you. You have to hold the nozzle and just let the fuel trickle in. It does not matter the angle of nozzle or how far in or out it is. It will cui off at any time usually at a half a gallon. You then have to hold it and trickle the gas in which depending on how much fuel you need it can take 45 plus minutes. The back splash will get on your hand and clothes . I have to wear a rubber glove, and have had to take my shoes off and put in plastic bag,as well as go change clothes. This is not safe nor is it normal as a lot of Jeep owners are having same problem.

When putting fuel in the gas tank, the pump kicks off and gas splashes out like the tank is full. We have to hold the nozzle and let it trickle in the gas for quite sometime. It doesn't matter how we hold the gas nozzle or what angle, it simply shuts off the pump like its full, and I'm dealing with spilt gas on me and the ground! I cannot fill my tank! after speaking with a Jeep dealership, they verified it does happen to the Compasses. What! there is a recall for the 2012, for the same problem. I am requesting a full refund for getting mine fixed, for seems to be the same problem. The problem got worse, I need gas and it alas it didn't allow for a fill up of gas.

It takes 20 minutes to put a few gallons of gas in. The gas pump keeps shutting off. I took it to be repaired, and the entire gas tank needs to be replaced. It cannot be serviced. Mileage approx. 40,000. Dealer says there have been 2 updates/redesigns of the gas tank due to this problem, but Chrysler will not provide repair assist because it is out of warranty.

After every single time I fuel up my car, the whole car sputters. I have taken my car in and had my oil changed and received a tune up. Last week, after having all of this work done, I go to fill up my tank, I turn the car on it sputters as I accelerate out of the gas station, then I pulled out onto a very busy street to drive home and not even a quarter mile down the road my car stalls out, power steering is lost, and I almost get hit from on coming traffic dur to me losing control of the vehicle. I put the car in park and turn the car back on and it seems fine. Again this issue only happens immediately after getting gas. This issue is apparently well known but there is no recall out yet. Here is a link to other people having the exact same problem as "bucking after I fill up with gas. . Read more...

Can't fill the fuel tank fast. There is an antisiphon ball valve in the tank that sticks. Takes forever to fill the tank.
There's a fuel issue, as you top off the gas drive it a half a mile the car jerks and shuts off steering wheel locks up, after a few times of it happening after fueling the car up. Its dangerous and a safety issue. Looked it up and a bunch of people with my model had the same issue and it has to due with fuel getting in the evap chamber which requires a full tank replacement reported from multiple owners of my model. Which is an emissions and safety issue. Its in motion less than a mile after fueling completely when it jerks then stalls.
Upon doing a total fill up our Jeep, it is now stalling and I end up with no steering. This does it at least 4/5 times each time we fill fuel tank up. Extremely dangerous as unable to steer and entire engine shuts done. This has done this with my family in the car about a minute after getting fuel, if not less, and turning onto a busy street where Jeep stopped running. The vehicle was in motion when this happened, both turning onto busy street and whilst driving on busy street.
Filled gas tank. Afterwards engine stalled in traffic.
After re-fueling my Jeep 2010 Jeep Compass until the tank is full (not over filled) the car drives heavy; engine stalls and engine has stopped completely while idling in traffic and at a intersection stop light on route 102 in londonderry, nh off of exit 4 off of interstate 93. It has happened multiple times and the check engine light briefly has flickered on, however, my mechanic stated the warning light did not show in the computers history. Thus causing no way to actually diagnose and fix the problem. This is dangerous as I had difficulty restarting the engine after each incident . However, I was able to eventually start and drive(although while the gas tank is full it drives heavy)the car. It seems, that the problem dissipates after using the gas and it has not occurred when the gas tank is not filled to its potential capacity. The car has approximately 83,960 miles as of today, July 3rd, 2011. This is a very dangerous issue that needs to be addressed and covered cost wise/recalled with Jeep accordingly. This has only occurred on a full tank of gas while idling at intersections. I know that on the car gurus website multiple Jeep Compass owners and Jeep owners in general have experienced this safety issue.

When the gas tank is filled/topped off the car randomly stalls while driving. The car steering locks up and is very dangerous in traffic. It happens until the gas tank is less than full.
After fueling vehicle to full tank, after less than a mile traveled, while driving, vehicle sputters and stalls out. Will usually restart after vehicle comes to a stop. Happens after 90-95% of fuel fillups. Has been happining for a few months now, have noticed in internet forums that this is happening to other drivers as well of this type of vehicle.
When you feel the vehicle the vehicle will cut out and stopped in traffic after reading on several web sites this is not a isolated incident this is a majority incident. It only happens after you fill the tank full it will stop with no warning and mesa for 10 to 15 seconds before it'll restart again. If this is not a safety issue I don't know what is somebody's going to get killed.
I just leased a brand new Jeep Compass. At about 178 miles, I filled up my gas tank for the first time. After leaving the gas station, my car stalled about . 2 miles down the road while going about 10mph. The message on the dash states to shift into park and then into the desired gear, but the engine would not turn over. From there, the engine would start and I could drive, but only for a few seconds before the engine shut down again and the steering wheel locked. The dealership stated that there is an issue with the sensor in the passenger side door causing the issue, but I had no problems until I filled up my gas tank. I fear this will happen again while driving on the highway, or on a busy road.
Tl-the contact owns a 2007 Jeep Compass. The contact stated that when the fuel tank was filled it caused the vehicle to stall. The failure was experience each time the fuel tank was filled. The contact stated at one occasion while at a complete stop the engine had to be restarted. The vehicle was not taken to dealer to have a diagnostic. The manufacturer was not contacted. The vehicle was not repaired. The failiure mileage was 140,000. Li.
After fueling the vehicle from any level to full the car will stall when at idle within 5 minutes of run-time. It will stall at least two more times and then run fine for the remainder of the tank. On exam by our mechanic it appears to be caused by the rollover valve in the gas tank which requires complete tank replacement. This is a safety concern because the valve is malfunctioning and could cause fuel to spill in event of a roll over. It also is a safety issue from stalling in traffic causing a road hazard.
The heat shield that protects and separates the gas tank from muffler preventing the heat from the muffler to overheat the gas tank has fallen from the brackets that holds this safety / heat shield in place. This heat shield is extremely important preventing any heat to damage the gas tank directly above. The brackets that held up the heat shield appeared to be of very poor quality and would tend to fail from my observation. Without this heat shield it appears a gas tank fire could occur in hot environments or possibly at idle without any air movement to cool the space between the gas tank and muffler.
Every time I fill my car with gas I expect the car to stall and turn off while I'm driving down the road. It's extremely dangerous and it happens every time. This is a known issue which Jeep needs to issue a recall for and refuses to. It is extremely dangerous to have people driving on the road whose engines can shut off at any moment causing them to come to a complete standstill even in the middle of the highway. The problem is the vapor/liquid separator valve located at the top of the fuel tank. The valve is designed to prevent liquid fuel from entering the charcoal canister/emissions system. When the valve fails, liquid gas can enter the line and fill the charcoal canister. After refueling the pcm on the vehicle detects a change in fuel level. Then, when the engine meets certain temperature and driving criteria, the pcm issues a purge command to the charcoal canister to remove the stored gas vapors. It's at that point that all the liquid gas in the line gets sucked into the charcoal canister. The pcm expects to see gas vapors entering the intake manifold and it is prepared to adjust air/fuel mixtures to compensate. However, it is not prepared to see liquid gas coming into the intake. That's what causes the engine to stall. Unfortunately, the only fix is to replace the entire gas tank.
Tl the contact owns a 2017 Jeep Compass. The contact stated that the fuel gauge was defective and did not work as intended without warning. Also, when attempting to place fuel into the fuel tank, the nozzle had to be re-positioned in order to continue adding fuel. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and offered no assistance. The contact was also informed that since he purchased the vehicle from a dealer that was no longer in operation, they could no longer stand by the vehicle. The vehicle had not been repaired. The dealer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 10,677.

Many of these vehicles have a problem with a roll over valve, recall NHTSA 12v14200, the tank needs to be replaced. My vehicle has the same problem. It does not allow me to pump gas properly due to a damaged rollover valve as stated by my mechanic. However, my vehicle is not included in te recall. It should be included and I shouldn't have to pay for it. Files can be uploaded by request. Researched the internet and many other Jeep Compass vehicles have the same problem.
Fuel emissions system. Repeated check engine light warning indications have been seen in this vehicle over the past year. Repeated trips to the dealership for service resulted in components being replaced erroneously. Most recent replacement required entire replacement of fuel tank and hoses due to excessive corrosion and deformation of the tank. The vehicle has approximately 65,000 miles of operation. This repeated issue has cost several hundreds of dollars in unnecessary repairs, lost time from work, and extreme concern over the safety of the vehicle's fuel system and emissions monitoring components. Degree of corrosion and level of failure on seals as reported by service technician seems very hazardous for the age and use history of vehicle.

Stalls after fill up. We do not top off or overfill the tank. Everytime we fill the tank up to the automatic shut off, the engine stalls within about 30 seconds. Generally, the engine will stall if idling at a stop light after fillup. The engine does not stall if the vehicle is running above 25-30 miles per hour. The engine starts right back up without problem, but will continue to stall. After vehicle has been driven a few miles, the stalling issue disappears entirely.
Tl the contact leased a 2017 Jeep Compass. The contact stated that the steering wheel made an abnormal clicking noise. The steering wheel was replaced; however, the failure continued with the steering wheel being structurally unsound. In addition, the fuel gauge failed to provide a proper reading. The gauge indicated that it was empty when there was fuel in the fuel tank and vice versa. The vehicle was not repaired after it was taken back and forth to manhattan Jeep (629 w 54th st, new york, NY 10019, 1-(877) 225-8709). The manufacturer was notified of the failures. The approximate failure mileage was 10.
Everything I fill the gas tank as soon as I leave the station the car spits ans sputters and jerks then stalls this is dangerous because when the car stalls the steering stops working properly while the car in in motion.
The gas tank will not take gas. I had the catalyt. Coverter fixed. The valve inside the gas tank does not work properly, and my research online shows this is a common problem with Jeep Compasses.
Every time after refueling, my 2007 Jeep Compass will stall and/or buck and almost stall soon afterwards. It's a very dangerous scenario that leaves me without power steering usually in the middle of traffic. The problem seems to be a common problem among Jeeps/Chrysler products because there are many references to the issue online. . Read more...
We purchased the vehicle new in January 2008. It has less than 100,000 miles on it. The Jeep has been a very reliable vehicle, until recently. Within the past month, it has stalled on us five times (twice on a four lane highway), no malfunction light. When it stalls, the steering wheel locks up. Also, when refueling the tank, the pump shut offs after every $0. 10-$0. 20 worth of gas. Refueling the tank takes approximately 10-15 minutes. Originally, we believed it was the pumps at a certain gas station; however, trips to numerous gas stations resulted in the same issue. The Jeep stalls only after refueling. I began researching online, and I thought the issue might have been a clogged evap system. However, we brought it to our mechanics; unfortunately, it needs a new fuel tank. The repair estimate totals $1,131. 07 for parts, labor, and taxes. Our mechanics, thought there could have been a recall on the fuel tank, or possibly an extended manufacturer's warranty, there wasn't. I began researching the aforementioned fuel tank issue, I found numerous complaints about the fuel tank. The manufacturer has been notified of the issues from Jeep owners, myself included. . I got my 08 Compass in 2014, I have had several of the other complaints of rusting, bolts, arm bearings etc. . . I have for past 2 months not been able to fill my gas tank as it only takes about . 20 cents at a time. Tried 4 different gas stations. My mechanic has tried all vacumm seals, pumps, hoses, vents, vapor canister, vapor purge solnoid, and checking everything from a to b. Said only thing it could be was gas tank. Went online and googled fueling issues with Jeep compas, thousands. . . . And this isnt a problem for Chrysler. If Jeepknows about this, why isnt there a recall. I can not spend 20 minutes trying to fill my tank with 2 small boys, one who has special needs and the full service stations refuse to service me. Chrysler/Jeep needs to help. This is ridiculous. I need answersand I cant afford 1200. 00 to fix it. Car is stopped, engine off, no motion. Stopped in gas station. Fuel tank is defective and can be hazardous when trying to fill tank. I have papers from mechanic.
Recently my 2008 Jeep Compass started having trouble with refueling. It would spit fuel back out anytime I tried to fill the tank. The dealer cleaned the check valve in the fuel tank, but it only lasted for one fill up. This is a safety issue! today, fuel came gushing back out and soaked my pants leg and shoes. Chrysler has recalled other Jeep models (and other Chrysler vehicles) for this problem. However, mine is not being recalled because there have not been enough complaints for my model. Yet I look online and see many complaints of this issue with other Jeep Compass owners! this is unacceptable!!! Chrysler is aware of the faulty fuel tanks and regardless of recall status, they should be replacing fuel tanks for anyone experiencing this problem! my Jeep only has 68,000 miles on it. This should not be happening. I had to drive home today in fuel soaked pants and now the interior of my Jeep stinks of fuel! there is no telling what could happen with this fuel tank in an accident. When the heat of summer gets here and my fuel tank isn't venting properly it could be an even bigger safety risk! please investigate this issue ASAP! I can't afford $1,000 to replace a faulty plastic fuel tank!.
The contact owns a 2007 Jeep Compass. The contact stated that it took an unusually long time to fill up the vehicle with fuel. The failure recurred on numerous occasions. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the fuel tank needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 160,000. The VIN was unavailable.
When fueling, the nozzle from the gas pump immediately shuts off as if the tank is full. It takes a lot of effort to fuel up without fuel splashing out and overflowing on the car and pavement. I have used different fuel stations, changed the angle of the nozzle, fueled up at different temperatures, changed the evap canister but still the problem exists. After research, I found that I am not the only Jeep owner that has this problem. It is the one-way rollover valve that is located in the gastank. Also other cars made from the same manufacturer have a recall for this same perilous problem. I am writing this complaint to get a recall for my car and any other Jeeps that have the same faulty one-way valve in the gas tank.
