Nine problems related to automatic transmission column shift have been reported for the 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Transfer case failed, bearings, chain, seals, and lubrication were replaced, eight months later seals failed causing transfer case to be replaced again, dealer stated mopar had no warranty so consumer would have to pay in full for repairs, consumer was told at time of first replacement that work would be guaranteed for twelve months. Consumer is requesting a refund for repair expenses.
1) differential ring & pinion gear failing. Causes significant pulsation/vibration, most severe at 50-70 mph. Has worsened over past month. Awaiting replacement (2) while accelerating, transmission shifts back and forth btwn 1st and 2nd 2-3 times times before finally settling into 2nd. (3) 4wd transfer case very hard to get into full time 4wd. Also, very hard to get out of any 4wd mode (back to 2wd). Indicator shows 2wd mode when truck still in 4-wd, requires violent reversing to get out of 4wd. (4) left rear door interior vinyl panel has come apart twice, repaired both times.
When shifting transmission from park to reverse, the transfer case slips out from 4-low to neutral.
Vehicle has excessive and violant vibrations at 65-70 mph, loud roaring noise. Two Chrysler 5 star dealership has serviced vehicle on numerous occasions including a factory zone rep analysis. Currently the vehicle has been serviced with a new gear shift differential, transfer case and drive shaft, 4 new tires and shocks with no improvements resulting in $3000 in service cost. No resolution. . . . Vehicle is extremely dangerous with extreme violant shaking. Chrysler is contending that the vehicle has high mileage and is not under manufacture warranty and is not liable. I have researched other similar conditions with the same consumer complaints. Many were accident related.
Torque convertor & transfer case failed.
Both front brake rotors warped. In addition, transmission failed 3 times; engine head cylinder had eight misfires; power seats fold down into back seat; defective transfer case and air conditioning switch failed.
Vehicle when put in 4-wheel drive, it is hard to get into gear, problem is intermittent, vehicle makes a big thump noise and jerks, sometimes gets stuck, dealer contacted ,and cannot duplicate the problem, adjustments were made and problem still exists. Provide further information.
