Automatic Transmission Park/neutral Start Switch problems of the 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee - part 1

I had my car in park when the car proceeded to go back by itself with my child in it. I ran after the car and the car dragged and scraped me and smashed my right leg. It stop when it hit my neighboors fence. If it weren't for the fence it would have ran me over. I contected the manufauture and they send some one out to investicate and proceded to tell my that thier ws nothing I could do. I contacted several attorneys and they said they couldn't help me. I feel that the car is unsafe and I have three children and can not afford to purchase a new car to keep my children safe. I hope that you can please help.

Jeep was in "park" in the garage - within 10 minutes of parking the Jeep rolled out of the garage and down the driveway impacting a parked vehicle on the street. The Jeep was found to be in park after the crash.

While vehicle was in park and idling, it started rolling backwards and knocked owner to the ground, rolling over the bottom portion of her left calf muscle and causing several bruises, vehicle rolled across a section of the highway, and was stopped when it crashed into a guardrail, dealership was in possession of vehicle, but has not informed consumer as to any findings, consumer stated the problem has since occured on 2 other occasions, in which the transmission locked up, since this incident the vehiclehas been leaking when it rains on the passenger side, most likely a result of the impact.

Vehicle was in park when it jumped out of gear and hit another vehicle. Both cars were totalled. Please provide any further information.

Jeep jumped out of park into reverse while driver was exiting the vehicle resulting in an accident that caused massive head trauma requiring surgery and rehabilitation.

On 11-12-01, I drove my Jeep Grand Cherokee up to my workshop behind the house. I got out the Jeep leaving the drivers door open, the engine was running, and the shifter was in park ! as I walked in front the Jeep, it suddenly started moving backwards. I ran around to the driver side, but it was picking up speed. It moved backwards about 10 -15 yds before I caught up with it and jumped inside the drivers side to apply the brake. Had I not reached the brake, it would have slammed in my neighbors house. This is not the first time this has happened. I reported a similar incident in August 2000. At that time it did break the taillight on the Jeep, dented the tailgate structure, and scraped the paint when it knocked down my pump house. Basically, this is a dangeous situation! as I said, this is the second time this has happened and I will never leave my engine running with the transmission in park. I strongly suggest this matter be looked into. I paid a lot of money for the Jeep Grand Cherokee and now I can not trust it in park. Knowing this, I would never buy another one, nor suggest anyone else buy one either!.

My car was running and it park, it automatically shifted into reverse, had my child in the car was adjusting his seat belt and I had to jump back into my car and step on the park. Narrowly missed rolling into the path of a semi-truck.

Consumer put gear into park and started to exit vehicle. Vehicle suddenly started rolling backwards, and in an attempt to stop, attempted to apply pressure to brake pedal, but instead consumer's foot applied pressure to accelerator pedal. Jeep jumps backward while in park or stopped at a light. Very dangerous with 2 children at home. I am afraid I will hit someone behind me because the Jeep will just 'jerk' beckwards with no warning. I would like information on how to get this corrected. I have called several dealers in the cleveland area, and none of them will admit to having any 'knowledge' of this problem.

Consumer is requesting information regarding any recalls, service bulletins, etc, this vehicle has experienced jumping out of gear, analyst is assuming this happened to consumers vehicle due to letter stating one person was injured, claim 14-1420-829.

Vehicle shifted suddenly and unexpectedly from park to reverse while idling, resulting in a collision, and causing minor injuries. Dealer has inspected vehicle . Please provide additional information.

Vehicle was parked in driveway with emergency parking brake in up positon when it jumped from park to reverse, causing front driver's side door to be knocked off the hinges, and the rear of vehicle to be smashed in. Estimated damage to vehicle was four thousand dollars. Consumer contacted dealer for problem, but informed consumer that situation was impossible for that vehicle.

While driving 60 mph, vehicle shifted into reverse, causing it to stall, dealer replaced parts of transmission. Consumer states vehicle was seen by three different repair shops before the problem was detected.

The car rolls back to reverse direction even though gear is set to fron direction.

Consumer backed his vehicle on the boat ramp and put it in park, when consumer got out to unlock his boat from the boat trailer, the vehicle came out of park, vehicle was totaled from water damage and consumer was injured.

Pe 01 021/ rolled away in park: vehicle inadvertently jumped out of gear into reverse on several occasions. Consumer was able to apply brakes before it took off. Dealer / manufacturer were not notified at this time, also, a clunking would appear after applying accelerator pedal.

While vehicle is in park, itwill jump from park to reverse. Has happened twice without a prior warning, just like it was seen on the news. Consumer states once it damaged a fence and injured one person, another time it occurred it rolled over a curb wrecking into and crashing into a building.

Vehicle was parked with engine running, emergency brake not applied, suddenly vehicle went backward, consumer opened drivers door and knocked consumer down as she tried to jump into vehicle to stop it, vehicle came to a stop when it hit a rock fence, consumer was bruised, and hit her head on drivers door. Damage to vehicle $ 3000. 00.

Vehicle was parked at an incline, engine running, emergency brake not applied. Consumer's daughter was inside vehicle. Suddenly vehicle went backward, was stopped by a retaining wall. Child suffered fractured left arm. Vehicle was totalled.

Vehicle was in park and it suddenly rolled into reverse. Vehicle stopped by applying brakes. Consumer has experinced same incident 3 other times. Dealer stated that transmission could be the problem, but was not taking responsibility for repairs.

I parked the car. Walked away. The car started moving in reverse. I ran back to the car,jumped in to stop it. Missed the brake and hit the gas pedal. The car jumped a curb and went through a large plate of glass on a commercial bldg. Since than the car has jumped from drive to neutral and almost caused accidents on at least 3 other occasions. I don't trust this car's transmission. My insurance has gone up because of the accident. I would like the accident removed from my record because now I'm hearing I'm not the only one experiencing this problem. I read in the san jose Mercury news on July 4 & Aug 3 that this is a common problem. Please advise me on what I need to do to rectify this problem.

My Jeep was on level ground. I put it into "park" with the engin, e still running in order to get out of the vehicle to momentarily check on something. Perhaps 30 seconds later when I was about 15 feet from the vehicle, it jumped into reverse and rammed into two cars parked behind it. There were no passengers in the Jeep. No one in the cars was hurt. The Jeep was not damaged but the two cars were. The incident was reported to my insurance company.
