11 problems related to transfer case have been reported for the 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Owner of 1996 Jeep cherokee - problems with transfer case began in 1998-1999, at 50, 000 miles. Transfer case has been replaced and rebuilt on 3 occasions. Feb 25, 2003 took vehicle to dealership - same problem, need to replace transfer case again. Have been advised that once our warranty expires, they will not warranty the transfer case replacement. Will be happy to provide details and records of over 17 repairs to this vehicle. After second transfer case replacement contacted Chrysler because we felt this was a defective part. Each time it is replaced or repaired, the repair does not last. Daimler Chrysler representative refused to meet with us to review problems.
1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee has failure in transfer case. This is evidently a consistent problem with this vehicle. No evidence of recall. Total cost to repair is approximately $1100. The vehicle would not shift out of 4 wheel drive.
Transfer case gasket leaks. According too mechanic I talked with, this is a constant problem on the 1996 model Jeep Grand Cherokee.
While driving on freeway and going up hill there is a hesitation coming from engine. Dealer has been contacted. Please provide any further information. Consumer states the transfer case is binding on turns and the gears tend to click when driving over 70 mph.
The front and rear axles broke, vehicle is also locked in 4 wheel drive. Nlm.
1) differential ring & pinion gear failing. Causes significant pulsation/vibration, most severe at 50-70 mph. Has worsened over past month. Awaiting replacement (2) while accelerating, transmission shifts back and forth btwn 1st and 2nd 2-3 times times before finally settling into 2nd. (3) 4wd transfer case very hard to get into full time 4wd. Also, very hard to get out of any 4wd mode (back to 2wd). Indicator shows 2wd mode when truck still in 4-wd, requires violent reversing to get out of 4wd. (4) left rear door interior vinyl panel has come apart twice, repaired both times.
Both front brake rotors warped. In addition, transmission failed 3 times; engine head cylinder had eight misfires; power seats fold down into back seat; defective transfer case and air conditioning switch failed.
While shifting gears from 4 wheel hi to 4 wheel low and back, the transfer case makes a grinding noise.
Vehicle transfer case makes a grinding noise. Four wheel drive will not engage unless vehicle is placed in reverse and allowed to move backwards.
Consumer rear axle and transfer case failed at the same time. Nlm.
