Ignition problems of the 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Five problems related to ignition have been reported for the 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Ignition problem

Failure Date: 05/31/2016

The contact owns a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee. While driving approximately 35 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. The vehicle failed to restart and was towed to an independent mechanic where the ignition coils were replaced. The failure recurred the same day the vehicle was serviced. The vehicle was in the process of being towed back to the mechanic for the second time. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 120,000.

2 Ignition problem

Failure Date: 10/29/2008

1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee, 2wd, 4. 0 liter inline 6, automatic transmission. User has replaced many engine electrical and ignition parts, as well as fuel pump assembly, some relays, and the Jeep continues to stall in traffic, when turning corners, when backing up, has intermittent stalling when driving, and is posting various computer codes. I have already spent $700 on diagnostic and parts replacement, yet the problem persists. When driving the engine periodically cuts out and rpm's drop to zero. If this happens in heavy traffic or during an evasive maneuver someone could be killed. This is an ongoing and dangerous problem that my mechanic can not fix, and based on my research on the internet it is a widespread and perplexing design-related problem with this era Jeep cherokees and grands.

3 Ignition problem

Failure Date: 10/24/2007

Was driving on the highway. At about 65mph, the engine started revving from 3500 rpm all the way to 6000 rpm, but the speed didn't increase at all. Took the car to the shop and the mechanic said they ran a full diagnostics check and found nothing wrong with the cherokee. So I drove the Jeep for another month until it died on one early morning. I went to start the Jeep just like every morning, but this time the engine won't even turn or make a sound. The gauges indicators went beserks and bottomed out at the max. It looks like an electrical problem. I have yet to find out what exactly is wrong with the Jeep when I take it in to the dealer today.

4 Ignition problem

Failure Date: 05/22/2001

Jeep dealership cannot find any electrical faults which cause engine to shut off at highway speed. This has occurred two times and reported to NHTSA database. I replaced a brand new factory battery per the dealer recommendation after a full system dianogstic which revealed nothinhg. But only two weeks after the dianostic, I had to replace a daytime running lamp module; and currently the door ajar indicator light is reversed. I think Jeep has major electrical system faults which they are denying from the many complaints I am reading online.

5 Ignition problem

Failure Date: 10/12/1998

When getting into the vehicle and putting the key into the ignition, driver will get an electrical shock, and when touching any metal part in the vehicle can get shocked, as well as when taking the key out.
