1 Brake Disc Rotor problem

Failure Date: 09/30/2007

I have a 2000 Jeep gc laredo, and along with many, many other people I have numerous problems. The warped rotors are very dangerous when you have to use your brakes, especially when you have children in the car as I do, also the taillight/brake light issue, that has gotten me pulled over more than once, even though I put a new bulb in it every time. The door lock actuator that is very annoying not to mention my transmission has a shifting problem that I can't do anything about and now my radiator fan will not work so my car will overheat if I am stopped for too long.

2 Brake Disc Rotor problem

Failure Date: 02/07/2007

My 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee 6 cyl. 4x4 has had extensive rotor problems leading to replacement of rotors at 19,000 (covered by dealer), 40,000 (at my expense), at 63,520, again at my expense, at 90,000, and now again, replacing all 4 rotors at 363. 50 per set at 112,000 miles. This needs to be recalled and investigated immediately.

3 Brake Disc Rotor problem

Failure Date: 10/23/2006

: the contact stated while driving various speeds, the front end shook. An independent repair shop replaced the rotors four times, but the problem returned after four months.

4 Brake Disc Rotor problem

Failure Date: 08/02/2006

Due to faulty rotors, calipers, and brakes which resulted in the well documented shimmy in 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee laredos, I had the dealership replace all components at 70k miles. Now at 121,000; the shimmy is so bad at 40 mph that I nearly lose control of the vehicle. Looks like another expensive brake job to correct an inherent Jeep defect.

5 Brake Disc Rotor problem

Failure Date: 06/10/2006

The brake rotors on my 2000 Jeep cherokee keep warping. I have heard multiple complaints about this same problem from other Jeep owners. I also have a problem with my electric windows failing. Once again I have had others tell me the regulators on the windows fail often with the Jeeps.

6 Brake Disc Rotor problem

Failure Date: 03/16/2006

Vehicle: 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee laredo. When depressing the brake pedal, it pulsated and caused the steering wheel to vibrate excessively, especially at higher speeds. The vehicle experienced extended stopping distances. The dealership service department advised that the brake rotors were warped and required replacement. This occurred three times: sept 2001 (13,700 miles), Jan 2003 (24,800 miles) and Mar 2006 (43,600 miles). The dealership advised that there was no inherent flaw with the vehicle's braking system or equipment (including the original brake rotors & calipers, and the replacement parts).

7 Brake Disc Rotor problem

Failure Date: 03/06/2006

: the contact stated while the brake pedal was depressed, the tires felt square and there was an excessive stopping distance. The vehicle was taken to the dealership, who determined the rotors were warped. The rotors and pads were replaced. The brake rotors have been replaced three times, but the problem persisted. The cranksahft position sensor was replaced. The consumer stated he could feel the transmission shudder. Updated 03/22/06.

8 Brake Disc Rotor problem

Failure Date: 02/25/2006

: the contact stated the engine would over heat while the vehicle was in the stand still position on a frequent basis. On one occasion, the vehicle would not restart. The vehicle was towed to the dealer who determined the radiator fan relay switch had to be replaced. The contact had the part replaced. Also, while traveling 40 mph, the vehicle had an extended stopping distance on normal road conditions when the brakes were applied normally. The brake lights did not signal any warning prior to the incident. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who determined the rotors needed to be replaced. The contact replaced the part, which corrected the problem.

9 Brake Disc Rotor problem

Failure Date: 01/18/2006

: the contact stated while driving at 25 mph the brakes pulsate and at 55 mph they shudder making it hard to control the vehicle. The dealer has replaced the calipers and rotors three times. The repair does not remedy the problem for more than 10,000 miles. Updated 2/7/2006 -.

10 Brake Disc Rotor problem

Failure Date: 01/12/2006

I own a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee laredo 4wd. I had begun to notice a shudder when braking and took the vehicle to my local repair shop (midas). They advised me that I would need new rotors, pads, and calipers on at least the front brakes. They also told me that this is a recurring problem with Jeeps and that a technical service bulletin had been given to them referring them to this problem. What I don't understand is; if this is a problem that Jeep knows about and the braking system that is safety related, then how can it not be a recall. The mechanic told me the calipers have a problem of 'sticking', causing uneven rotor wear and shoe failure. I bought the vehicle used less than a year ago, and now have no real recourse to get the problem fixed.

11 Brake Disc Rotor problem

Failure Date: 01/05/2006

Break failure while driving down a mountain. We had no warning of this problem until we started descending a mountain in arizona. The brakes started to "chatter" and didn't hold. I put the car into 2nd gear and was able, barley, to keep control. We brought the car into a Jeep dealer several days later and they told us the rotors and brake pads were totally gone on both front tires. We had them replaced. We've had this problem before and in fact, had the brakes replaced just six months ago. This was the fourth time we've replaced brakes on this vehicle.

12 Brake Disc Rotor problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2005

- the contact stated that the 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee had a number of problems. The vehicle had problems with the brake rotors since 2005. He had to replace the rotors on 2 occasions since he purchased the vehicle in 2003. The contact had been informed that he needed to have the rotors replaced again. Also, the contact has been having problems with the driver's side door locks. When hitting the unlock remote control to unlock the doors the vehicle did not unlock. On some occasions while in the vehicle and trying to unlock the doors from inside the doors did not unlock. A number of times he's had to get out the vehicle from the passenger side door. In addition, tail lights are malfunctioed. The socket that held the bulbs did not work properly. He stated that his brake lights and his reverse lights have failed. He had to glue the plastic sockets together, and on the last time he needed repairs for the socket, he had to rig them up to work. Finally the contact had to replace the brake and back up lights. The failure mileage was 80,000, and the current mileage was 100,000.

13 Brake Disc Rotor problem

Failure Date: 09/21/2005

Replacement of front and rear discs on brake system for the 4th time. Brakes repeatedly pulse and fade. All miles are highway driven. Very conservative driver. Pads seem to last, according to service technician however discs are completely pitted indicating inferior components and extremely poor brake design.

14 Brake Disc Rotor problem

Failure Date: 04/03/2005

Brake pulsation and heavy vibration during normal braking. This is due to defective brake componets I. E. Warping of rotors caused by heat friction from inferior metal and or manufacturing process. The class action suit filed against daimler/Chrysler only covers vehicles that were under the standard warranty period. Although d/c isn't admitting guilt, the proposed settlement will cover only those vehicles that qualify under their rules. The attorneys for the settlement class did not litigate a claim or even contest the rights of the class members who were not covered by the warranty when the failures occurred. All of the class members who had this problem need to be compensated for these repairs. Your agency needs to take action and review all of the data and evidence that proves this is a serious issue, and either have a recall or ask d/c to repair all of the defective vehicles, before these parts totally fail and cause death or injury!.

15 Brake Disc Rotor problem

Failure Date: 03/25/2005

Purchased the 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee in may 2003. I was filling up my car with gas when someone else asked if I ever had problems with my brakes. At that point I didn't. In April 2004, I was driving on the highway and noticed that the car would shake uncontrollably when applying the brakes. Didn't shake as bad in city driving. I went to my local car repair shop and they told me the rotors were warped. Paid to have the rotors spun. Now it's a year later and the car is shaking uncontrollably on the highway. Didn't think I was going to be able to stop from hitting the car in front of me. Now I have done research on the internet and see that this is a known problem and that it is listed in the technical service bulletin from Jeep in 2002. This is my family car! I too have had to replace the 2 of my door motors and 1 of my window motors. I can't believe that there are this many complaints and no one is forcing Jeep to put a recall on the rotors.

16 Brake Disc Rotor problem

Failure Date: 12/15/2004

Vehicle first started vibrating when braking in 2000. Took it in to the dealership and the replaced the rotors. Since then I have had it in about every 6 to 8 months for the same repairs. When I take it in tomorrow it will be the 6th time. This time they are claiming that warranty no longer covers it. With this many complaints regarding the brakes, why hasn't there been a recall to fix it properly?.

17 Brake Disc Rotor problem

Failure Date: 12/15/2004

We own a 2000, Jeep, Grand Cherokee and currently has approximately 61,000 miles. Besides the paint peeling problem . . . . . Which was fixed, we still have the vibrating, shuddering brake problem . Twice a year since the car was new, we have had to have brake (rotor) repairs . Chrysler has paid until last month. I had to beg for them to at least not charge me for the parts. I had to pay $82 for labor. It has come to the point with the mileage . That they will not replace the brakes for free anymore. I am not hard on them. . . . I work 1 mile from my home . That is why I only have 61,000 miles on it. What I want is a guarantee from Chrysler that for the life of my Jeep Grand Cherokee, they will repair this problem of there's free of charge. There are thousands of other owners who have the same complaint. When will Chrysler finally admit this is a problem and issue a recall ??.

18 Brake Disc Rotor problem

Failure Date: 11/22/2004

I own a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee. I bought this SUV used in 01/2004 and have read several complaints concerning the braking systems of this vehicle. I am now experiencing the same problem as these people are and I'm wondering why nobody is doing anything about it! the problem with this vehicle is that you get a pulsating action when braking and the brakes need to be replaced every 3,000 miles or so. I've never come across this problem with any other vehicles I've owned and I'm extremely surprised this vehicle hasn't been recalled for this problem as many other people, countless others, complain about the same thing. As your organization knows, this can be a serious safety hazard as this problem isn't covered by Jeep under warranty and we, the consumer, can't afford to replace brakes this often. The brakes in my Jeep are so horrible that when I brake at 55 mph, I feel it's unsafe to drive. My steering wheel shakes so much that it's hard to control. After reading many people's opinions about the Grand Cherokee, I found that many of these owners have the same problem.

19 Brake Disc Rotor problem

Failure Date: 11/06/2004

Front brake rotors and pads replaced 4 times in 40,000miles. Chrysler even replaced them and front calipers the first time. The last time they were replacd was a month before the accident. For the 4th time, steering wheel and pedal vibrate when braking suddenly. I lost control and rolled the 2000 Grand Cherokee into a guard rail.

20 Brake Disc Rotor problem

Failure Date: 09/03/2004

While applying the brakes, the pedal went to the floor and the vehicle shook uncontrollably. Consumer took the vehicle to the dealer for inspection, and the mechanic determined that the pads and rotors needed to be replaced. Consumer informed the dealer that this problem occurred more than once, and problem had not resolved. Problem still exists. There was an oil leak found at the left rear axle seal. Updated 02/20/07.

21 Brake Disc Rotor problem

Failure Date: 08/22/2004

The consumer rear ended another vehicle in a panic stop while driving at 60 mph. Upon impact, the frontal air bags failed to deploy. The dealership or the manufacturer were providing any information on why the air bags failed to deploy. The front passenger sustained bruises from the seat belt. The vehicle displayed a hard start due to improper fuel pressure, it would take a long time to crank before catching, and the brakes pulsated due to warped rotors.

22 Brake Disc Rotor problem

Failure Date: 08/06/2004

Steering wheel shakes violently when brakes are applied, espeically at high speed. Mechanic recommends all new braking system, as this is chronic problem for this car. Upon my own personal research of this, I can see he is correct. It seems everyone with a 2000 Grand Cherokee in the nation has this exact issue. A recall to correct the problem before someone dies would be appreciated.

23 Brake Disc Rotor problem

Failure Date: 08/02/2004

While applying the brake pedal vehicle vibrated uncontrollably. Driver was able to maintain control of the vehicle, and drove it home. Driver inspected the vehicle, and noticed that the rotors needed to be replaced, and replaced them three times. However, the problem recurred.

24 Brake Disc Rotor problem

Failure Date: 07/07/2004

Problem pertains to rotors, discs & calipers on a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Problems cause severe vibration & shimmying when brakes are applied from 15 to 55 mph. Was unaware the dealership resurfaced rotors between 7,000 & 8,000 miles when taked in for an oil change in 2001. Problems occured again in 2002 at 14,500 miles-rotors were resurfaced again & they informed us then that the rotors were already resurface once in 2001. Problems occured again in 2003 at 23,600 miles-rotors,brake pads & calipers were all replaced. Having more problems now July 7,2004-rotors are warped again at 29,500 miles. This is a very dangerous vehicle to operate in the mountains of pennsyvlania. I would like to have the NHTSA recall this vehicle and have it repaired properly.

25 Brake Disc Rotor problem

Failure Date: 06/28/2004

While consumer was depressing the brake pedal at any speed it pulsated. Vehicle was serviced six times for brakes and rotors, but problem recurred.

26 Brake Disc Rotor problem

Failure Date: 06/07/2004

The front brake rotors on my 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee warpe about every 10,000 miles. I am about to replace them for the third time at 42000 miles! at 31000 miles, the local Jeep dealer installed a "fit" kit" which obviously has not worked. The brake problem is an obvious safety problem. The first time that this happened, I was traveling down a steep road in the sierra/nevada mountains and almost lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle experienced severe shaking and steering wheel jerking during breaking. I had to gear down and travel very slowly until I reached level ground. After intense questioning, the dealer (joe kerley: san jose CA) acknowledged the frequency of this problem. So has Chrysler via the "repair kit". A call to Chrysler indicated that they wont act because roters are an wear item. I bellieve that there is a design flaw that has the potential to hurt or kill someone. Please get on the ball and investigate and order a recall.

27 Brake Disc Rotor problem

Failure Date: 05/19/2004

While driving 35 mph vehicle vibrated uncontrollably. Consumer maintained control of the vehicle, and drove it to the dealer for inspection, and mechanic determined that brake rotors needed to be replaced due to corrosion. Mechanic replaced the rotors seven times, but problem recurred.

28 Brake Disc Rotor problem

Failure Date: 05/14/2004

While I am generally very satisfied with my 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee, I am writing to complain about a chronic problem I have experienced. In 2000, when the vehicle was very new, I noticed vibration in the steering wheel. My Jeep was repaired for warped rotors and the brake pads were replaced and the rotors cut. Then, in 03/02, I had the same problem and the vehicle was repaired for the second time. Then again in 03/03, the same problem! this time, the folks at ramsey Jeep told me that they were installing a "kit" that would solve the problem for good. At this time, I was very happy to know that Jeep realized the problem and thought my troubles were over. Now in 04/04, I am sorry to report that I am experiencing the same vibration in the steering wheel and I don't need the technicians at Jeep to tell me what the problem is. The rotors will require replacement for the fourth time in $60000 miles.

29 Brake Disc Rotor problem

Failure Date: 05/12/2004

Rotors on vehicle warped at 14,000 miles. Dealer replaced them. Now after another 14,000 miles they are warped again. Dealer says they are having numerous complaints regarding warped rotors. This is a severe safety issue. When braking the vehicle, steering wheel and brake pedal shake and shimmy excessively making it difficult to control the vehicle. Dealer won't repair unless I pay for it. Chrysler customer service won't assist, they say write a letter to let us know. After finding this website I am thoroughly disgusted with Chrysler's lack of concern for this safety issue. Will Chrysler wait until there is a fatality before they issue a recall? no more chyrsler products in this household.

30 Brake Disc Rotor problem

Failure Date: 05/12/2004

Rotor are warping at 15,000 mile intervals. Dealer says they are having numerous complaints regarding warped rotors. This is a severe safety issue. When braking the vehicle, steering wheel and brake pedal shake and shimmy excessively. Dealer replaced rotors at 14,804 miles. Vehicle now has 31,255 miles and exact same problem is occurring. Dealer won't repair unless I pay for it. Chyrsler customer service won't authorize any repair, just said write a letter. Disgusted with Chrysler after seeing this website. Will Chrysler wait until there is a fatality before they put in a recall? no more Chrysler vehicles in this household.

31 Brake Disc Rotor problem

Failure Date: 05/12/2004

I own a Jeep Grand Cherokee limited w/ 36,000 miles brakes pulsate at 40 mph and almost out of controll @ 55 mph and over when applying brakes. Almost side swiped a bus with my child in car to keep it on the road. Have returned to dealer ( john irish auto plaza san rafael CA) jim graves has been very understanding. Its not the dealer I am upset it is with Chrysler/ daimler!!! they have a serious problem , are they waiting for someone to die!!! they replace with the same defective rotors they should provide another brake rotor system to see if it takes care of the problem. I hear stillen has something that may work. History: 8181 miles brakes shimmy; excessive run out, 9377 miles replace front rotors, 15832 miles front & rear have excessive run out resurfaced f & r rotors,21293 miles shimmy excessive run out; replaced front clippers & rotors, 26,133 miles f & r rotors have run out, 28921 miles vibration f & r rotors have excesive run out; resurfaces f & r rotors. 29450 need rear brakes, 29492 miles replaced rear brakes and rotors. 33101 miles shimmy vibration f & r rotors have excessive run out. 32 Brake Disc Rotor problem

Failure Date: 05/10/2004

The vehicle's brakes and rotors have had to be repaired often. The consumer was told that the rotors were too small for the vehicle. The consumer heard a pop noise when taking off or stopping intermittently. The vehicle shimmied at 60 mph and when the vehicle slowed down. Oil leaked from the front differential. The vehicle door lock made a bad grinding noise when the consumer used they key to access the vehicle.

33 Brake Disc Rotor problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2004

2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited has a defective engine. (nar). While braking the front end vibrated. The dealer indicated that the manufacturer is aware of the problem and would resurface the rotors under warranty. At 26500 miles the rotors failed again and this time the were replaced. At 49000 miles the problem recurred. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who suggested that the parts used were of poor quality. The manufacturer refused to pay to replace the parts because the vehicle was out of warranty. * cb.

34 Brake Disc Rotor problem

Failure Date: 04/26/2004

I have experienced steering wheel shaking while braking on the highway. At first I thought it was due to the road, but it has been recurrent. I will have to get the front brakes repaired.

35 Brake Disc Rotor problem

Failure Date: 04/25/2004

I have a 2000 Jeep with recurring problems with what I am told are the brake rotors. They apparently keep warping, causing moderate to severe shimmying when braking at higher speeds and pulsating when braking at lower speeds. At 10,531 miles I brought the car in. They resurfaced the rotars which they claim the manufacturer claimed would fix the problem. Then at 26,579 miles I was back at the dealer. They told me the manufacturer had a different solution. They replaced the rotors, brakes and calipers. I was skeptical that they were replacing a defective part with the same defective part. I told them I had a 1995 grand cherekee that had over 100 thousand miles and never had any problem with rotars so why didn't the manufacturer just use the 1995 part but, again, I was assured the new rotars were different and defect free. Now I have 49,000 miles on the car and it is again at the dealer for the same problem. The dealer and manufacterer say they will not make any further repairs. The service manager told me I had three options. One,they would replace the rotars for $240. 00. Two,do nothing because the manufacturer assures me that the problem does not effect safety or maintenance for any other parts on the vehicle. (which by the way I find to be a ludicrous statement and a callous disregard for the safety of their own consumers let alone others on the road since the car becomes very hard to control when the front end is shaking violently) and third, I could buy the part from a non-dealer at after market prices and get rotars made of a different and presumably stronger material. None of these options were appealing since experience with two Jeeps prior to this one dictated that this was not normal wear and tear, had nothing to do with my driving, and was clearly a defective part.
