Failure Date: 12/01/2017

My vehicle was in motion on the highway, on a straight-away. I heard a loud boom, then my vehicle started to smoke. I pulled off the road; and called for a tow. The mechanic stated that it was the transfer case seal that blew. He changed it and added fluid, but the noise is still there. He said that if it doesn't go away. Now, the Jeep won't shift out of first gear. It has been sitting in my driveway since I picked it up from the mechanic on 12/4/17.

Failure Date: 06/04/2014

Took the vehicle in for a noise that turned out to be a bearing problem. While in they indicated that an internal transfer case seal was leaking. I am being told that that type of failure is very common with this type of vehicle. If unnoticed could cause a failure.

6 Transfer Case problem

Failure Date: 01/30/2014

I filed complaint (10561016) when the first Jeep dealer I went to would not honor the safety recall n23. The second Jeep dealer I went to said they would honor the safety recall n23. After going to the Jeep dealer they checked their records and advised me the recall was already completed on my Jeep Grand Cherokee. I was advised that my Jeep Grand Cherokee needs a transfer case actuator and I will be charged for this part and labor. In addition they advised this part is on back order. My Jeep Grand Cherokee's 4wd lo was working prior to this safety recall n23. I feel that Chrysler/Jeep should be held accountable for replacing this part. I intend to write my state attorney general.

7 Transfer Case problem

Failure Date: 01/21/2014

On 01/20/2014, I brought my Jeep Grand Cherokee 2006 to my mechanic due to a service 4wd system light on dashboard. My mechanic advised me that the computer revealed code safety recall n23/NHTSA 13 v-175. Safety recall n23 may unintentionally cause the transfer case to shift to neutral position without input from the driver. This condition could allow the vehicle to roll away inadvertently while the vehicle is parked and cause a crash without warning. My mechanic advised me to go to my Jeep dealership due to the safety recall. On 01/21/2014, I contacted via telephone the Jeep dealership where I purchased my vehicle. I advised the Jeep employee of the situation with my Jeep Grand Cherokee 2006. The Jeep employee advised that I would be charged for repair. I advised the Jeep employee that the code n23 was a safety recall. The Jeep employee responded by making an accusation that my mechanic's computer was probably outdated. In addition the Jeep employee advised that the code n23 was not a safety recall. Continuing on the same date, I contacted another Jeep dealership. I explained the situation with my Jeep Grand Cherokee 2006. I was advised by the Jeep employee that the code n23 is a safety recall and the Jeep dealership would honor the recall. I conducted further research to discover that on 08/17/2013 I brought my Jeep Grand Cherokee 2006 to the first Jeep dealership mentioned for safety recall n23.

8 Transfer Case problem

Failure Date: 01/08/2014

After my Grand Cherokee had the "n23" recall performed on it by the previous owner, the "service 4wd" indicator comes on and disables my transfer case shifting. I clear the codes and it works again for a short period of time then the codes return (c1406, c1405, c140f) disabling the shifting again. This appears to be a common issue with Grand Cherokees according to the information I have found on Jeepforum.

9 Transfer Case problem

Failure Date: 12/12/2013

In December my local Jeep dealership installed safety recall n23 code. Five days later I towed my Jeep behind my motorhome to florida in neutral/tow mode. When I arrived I could not get my Jeep out of neutral mode. . . Message "repair 4 wheel drive system". I went to a local transmission shop and they replaced the transfer case motor at the cost of $600. 00. When we got ready to leave florida in April I could not get the Jeep to go into neutral/tow mode. . . Same message. I went back to the transmission shop. . . This time they tested the motor and reset the codes. . . I was able to go into tow mode. Now in may as we were hooking up to go camping I could not go into tow mode. . Same message again. There are many Jeep owners having this same problem after installing n23. I believe that the reason this transfer case motor and actuator is on back order is because of all the replacements after installing n23. I think that Jeep has to resolve this code problem. . . And I also believe that a repayment from Jeep is in order.

2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee consumer complains that recall was performed eight times and problem still exist the consumer stated shortly after the recall was performed, a message appeared on the dashboard that stated service 4-wheel drive. The consumer took the vehicle to the dealer. An inspection revealed the transfer case actuator was faulty, which was directly related to the recall. The dealer performed the recall again, which did not resolve the problem. Customer service, informed the consumer to go to another dealer where they would replace the transfer case actuator. However, the dealer only reprogrammed the software update, which they did three times. Three weeks later, the consumer went to another dealer, and they informed him the recall needed to be done again. Recall # 13v175000. Customer follow-up. Updated 01/28/15.

11 Transfer Case problem

Failure Date: 10/10/2013

A recall (n23) was issued (July 2013) by Chrysler corp. To resolve a problem with the transfer case not engaging 4low and / or shifting into neutral. All this happens at random. Once the in-dash warning of "service 4wd system" appears, the vehicle has to be returned to the dealer for repair. After two attempts the problem has not been resolved. A third appointment is scheduled for Friday January 17. Various investigating (internet) suggests that most that have returned their vehicles for correction have also not been resolved. Chrysler corp. Has been unresponsive to various communication from many Jeep owners and the Jeep dealerships are not communicating to the factory regarding the many complaints. I want to sell this vehicle and with the recall liability not being resolved I'm unable to sell it.

13 Transfer Case problem

Failure Date: 08/27/2013

I had n23 recall done on my Jeep in 8/2013. I have had my Jeep to 3 dealers 9 different times. Since the recall my 4wheel low/ neutral has not worked on Jeep. I have had my actuator replaced and the final drive controller reprogrammed many times. The issue will fix for a day and then back to say fault code. My service 4wheel drive light comes on when I try and engage it. I have contacted Jeep corporate and have been working with them but I don't feel they care. They have had me taking my car to all these different dealers and everyone says its something different and say they fixed it. I have been out of 800 or more in gas, 160 in diagnosis fees, 170 in tow bill from one dealer to another, and 600 for actuator. I have only had my Jeep serviced at Jeep dealers and it has always had all scheduled maintenance on time. I feel that the software that was installed on my Jeep has caused all these issues. I never had any problems out of my 4wheel drive system. My first recall letter stated that my transfer case may experience a transfer case actuator encoder electrical failure that results in unintentional transfer case shifting into or through the neutral position. My Jeep has been showing the same 4wheel drive code since the recall. I had to pay to replace my actuator cause they said it went bad after the recall. I feel like I have been taken advantage of I paid 51,000 for my Jeep and have taken very good care of it. Someone has got to do something so Jeep will fix everyone's SUV. There are many others in this same position as me its posted all over the internet. This has been going on for 5 months and still no solution.

14 Transfer Case problem

Failure Date: 08/17/2013

N23 recall was performed to keep transfer case from shifting into neutral caused by cracked circuit board. The "fix" to this was to flash the software to make it impossible for the Jeep to shift into neutral and 4wd low. Now every vehicle that has had this recall done is unable to tow their vehicle behind a camper because the transfer case can not shift into neutral, and 4wd low is inoperable as well. Chrysler has claimed that the n23 recall has nothing to do with all of these vehicles losing 4wd low even though everyone that has had this recall done has lost neutral and 4 lo. This cheap fix has left thousands of people who spent a lot of money on these expensive vehicles without the best feature of the vehicle, 4 lo. Most people buy these Jeeps because of their 4wd capability. Resale on a vehicle like this has gone right out the window with the loss of this feature. . Read more...

15 Transfer Case problem

Failure Date: 08/13/2013

I recieved a recall letter in June 2013 from Chrysler recall n23/NHTSA 13v-175 transfer case actuator. Stating software was not available just yet to fix. Then in August 2013 recieved a second recall notice explaining that the software is now available for the recall to be resolved. All I have to do is go to a Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep dealership and have the software reprogram the final drive controller module. On August 13/2013 I had the recall serviced at johnson Dodge dealership in budd lake NJ ( 481 rt 46 budd lake NJ 07828). They did service my vehicle for said recall. The next day and everyday since I have a warning light on my dash stating""service 4wd system". I read the car manual and did some trouble shooting, but light still on. I tried to put vehicle into 4wd lo, as instructed by the car manual. Result, is doesn't go into 4wd lo, warning message still coming on. I made an appointment (August 22/2013) for the same dealer to inspect this issue because I do believe possibly something was either done incorrectly, or wrong software. End result from second visit to dealer is , my transfer case actuator needs replacing !! ($600 plus tax) . They will replace it, but I feel the two issues are related, and I should not have to pay the bill. The dealer reinspected all above components and stated the software is not working properly with the actuator? so end result is they want to replace the actuator. My original recall letter said I may have a fault in the actuator, but the second letter stated for the new software to fix all. The dealer said thats all they can do! call Chrysler and see what they say. Tried to call a second dealer, ( dover Dodge in randolph & rockaway NJ) and still waiting for a call back. I then called a 800# for Chrysler a customer hot line (800-992-1997) given to me by dealer, those too, I'm waiting on a resolution. Thank you dan strelec.

The contact owns a 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated when he stopped at a red light the vehicle shifted into neutral gear. The rpms increased excessively; however, the vehicle would not shift into drive or reverse. The contact stated that NHTSA recall campaign id number: 13v175000 (electrical system, power train) was related to the transfer case; however, the dealer stated the manufacturer confirmed the VIN was not included. 18 Transfer Case problem

Failure Date: 01/17/2013

On the date mentioned the vehicle described became locked in place unable to shift gears. The vehicle was towed into the dealer and the work performed . This involved the replacement of the transmission transfer case. At the time I questioned the possible reasons for the incident and received no answer. The total cost was in excess of 3000 dollars paid by me. I have since (upon conducting research) learned that the Chrysler corp. Has reluctantly issued a recall for this exact issue. It was issued in may of this year. The agency report specifically characterizes the electrical transfer case issue. I made repeated calls to the Chrysler corp. And have been rebuffed with the explanation being "your VIN is not included in this action. " I find this incredulous. My vehicle, a 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee absolutely falls into the recall category. The invoice (#313873) I received from world Jeep where the repair work was completed identifies the cause and repair as transmission/transfer case 2168cpdca. The case number I was given by Chrysler corp. Is identified under # 23432426. The recall campaign number under your agency 13v175000. It is carried by Chrysler under campaign number n23. I cannot understand the arrogance of a corporation such as Chrysler in light of such absolute evidence to the contrary of their stance. I am requesting your assistance in this matter. Any documentation heretofore mentioned can be forwarded to your agency if necessary. Thank you, tom hayes.

19 Transfer Case problem

Failure Date: 09/19/2006

: the contact stated while traveling 17 mph down a curvy mountain road in four wheel drive low, the vehicle jumped out of low gear and sped down the mountain after the rpm's reached 1800. The dealership stated the hemi engine was designed to jump out a gear to conserve gas.
