The vehicle shuts off for no apparent reason with no warning. It has happened multiple times. Sometimes while in reverse ,sometimes while in drive and sometimes while moving from reverse to drive. It has happened at low speeds and at speeds up to 30 mph. Sometimes the vehicle won't let you shift to park to restart it. There are no indicator lights when it happens. Very scary as its happening more frequently. It has happened in dry and wet conditions, on residential and city streets. All indications are that ithe cause is the same as other fiat Chrysler recalls fir the 2008 Grand Cherokee though ours is not on a recall list.

3 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem

Failure Date: 10/14/2014

My vehicle shut off going over a bump in the road. My vehicle has done this on numerous occasions, twice in the middle of intersections and once on a railroad track. I was sent an important safety recall notice from Chrysler (notification code p57) approximately 3 months ago and have not heard anything since then and this issue has progressively got worse over the last several months. I did contact the local Chrysler dealership and they had no information to provide and I also had my vehicle in to be serviced for this issue about one year ago with no issue identified by riverside auto group in marinette, WI. I also called Chrysler at 800-853-1403 and they had no update on this issue or any idea when this recall would occur to fix this issue. I cannot afford to purchase a different vehicle and this issue has become a safety concern for me and my family. What recourse do I have here? am I expected to continue driving a vehicle with serious safety issues with the ignition switch just because Chrysler is not addressing this issue in a timely fashion? does the NHTSA have any other recourse I can take on this? I am certain I am not alone with this issue and I would hate to see someone get hurt or killed, because of the lack of prioritizing by Chrysler.

4 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem

Failure Date: 09/23/2014

Incident 1 (9/23/2014): driving at 25mph in a straight line when there was a loud "clunk" sound and the engine shut down with several dashboard warning lights lit. Loss of power steering and power braking. Was able to pull vehicle to a side street and come to a complete stop. Upon placing the vehicle in park and turning the ignition to the off position, was able to restart the vehicle and resume trip. No dashboard warning lights remained lit, no other issues driving. Incident 2 (9/30/2014): driving less than 5mph in a parking lot. Vehicle stalled without loud clunk with several dashboard warning lights lit. Loss of power and power braking. Was able to put vehicle in neutral and cycle the engine off and on to restart. Vehicle resumed normally with no dashboard warning lights lit. Purchased vehicle used on 9/18/2014, so unsure if this has been a recurring problem.

6 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem

Failure Date: 03/08/2013

While driving engine shuts off with no indication of why. No stored computer code. Engine loses all power and dies. Must stop vehicle then shut ignition and restart. Truck would start then die . . That happened ten times. . And finally started. Gas tank was three quarters filled and weather was good. Battery is in good working order with proper voltage and charging system is in working order. This is the third time this has happened since I purchased the vehicle as a new unit. The second time it happened I took it into the dealer and they replaced the computer harness as they said it had a bad connector. But the problem is now back and I feel a loss of control resulting in crash and or death may result. [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. 7 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem

Failure Date: 12/30/2012

While traveling on the highway at about 70 mph, the engine stalled and shut down. I had to pull over to the side and restart the car to continue. I've had similar issues with this vehicle dozens of times and I fear that one day it will cause an accident when it shuts down on me. The dealer seems to not know what to do about it and I'm scared that I'll get hurt driving the car.

8 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2011

My engine has shut down and the electrical system powered down while driving many times (more than 60 times in the last 3 years). This has happened at many speeds between 0 (standing still) and 60 mph. When the vehicle shuts down, steering becomes very difficult and brakes work to a minimum. I've taken my Grand Cherokee to the Jeep agency many times, and they keep saying that nothing is wrong with it. Only once they told me it was an oxygen censored, which they changed, but the problem persisted constantly. This is a very dangerous situation as the vehicle can become very difficult to control at which speeds I bought my Jeep Grand Cherokee 2008 in mexico city.

10 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem

Failure Date: 09/02/2010

Multiple incidents of unintended change in ignition switch position to the off position, resulting in engine shutdown, electrical and power steering completely shutdown/lock. First occurrence (approximately 2010) was during a left-hand turn, which nearly caused a multiple vehicle accident. Constant airbag light warning. Multiple other occurrences since then, resulting in multiple calls to dealer and contact to 1800 numbers provided. Fac p57/NHTSA 14v-567 important safety recall notice received and dealer again contacted. However, I was advised that the ignition is no longer in production and there is no way of knowing if/when the part will become available. Accordingly, no repair/remedy can be made. Thank you, marli robbins.

11 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem

Failure Date: 03/22/2010

Total engine shutdown, usually without warning. The incident does not seem to correlate with any given speed. The shutdown has happened at 75mph on highway as well as sitting at a stop light. When engine shuts down you lose the power steering and brakes. If it were to stall while making an abrupt turn it could cause an accident. This happens multiple times per day. Truck has been with the dealer now for a week and it has them "baffled". The computer system is not logging any malfunction related to the stall. In order to restart the truck you need to place the transmission into park and remove the key from the ignition. The truck will start up immediately and could run fine for as far as 20 miles or as little as 20 feet. I find it rather odd that there was a recall for 1338 vehicles in early 2008 where faulty modules could lead to vehicles stalling while driving. It makes you wonder if the issue was truly contained. Vehicle has ~33,000 miles on it.

12 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem

Failure Date: 03/13/2010

My 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee (5. 8l) has a persistent problem where the engine will shut off unexpectedly. Problem has been ongoing for 9 mounts, and 3 different dealers have been unable to determine the cause of the problem. Problem occurs in all driving conditions, and is not repeatable. Sometimes engine shuts off very briefly (~. 25 second) and picks up with just a 'hiccough' in normal operation, sometimes engine shuts off for > 2 seconds, and I need to shift to neutral, and re-engage the key to start the engine. The problem occurs at random times (on cruise control on straight, flat highway at 65 mph, idling at stop light, accelerating into traffic, slowing for exit ramp). Sometimes I will drive for hundreds of miles without an occurrence, sometimes the engine cuts out 5 times in a 5 mile drive. Problem is not repeatable, and not predictable.

13 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem

Failure Date: 07/17/2009

I am filing this now for July 09 due to the same issue that happened yesterday, 4-7-10. . This is not a safe vehicle and Jeep needs to fix this problem. It is unsafe when a vehicle gives no warning and completely shuts off on an interstate. Also, please see my safety complaint odi # 10324403 for the 4-7-10 incident. In July 09, after going through a toll at exit 67 barneget toll , garden state parkway,NJ, I accelerated to the merge point and vehicle shut down and engine stalled and lost power. Several attempts to restart didn't work. Seems like it shut down electrically and was not getting gas adequately. Seems to lack adequate power. Attempt to start several times with no luck, engine wouldn't stay running, long start-up inconsistent, dash lights did come on to inform of no power. Let sit to cool down vehicle and was able to start and move to a more safer location. This was the first occurrence and the temperature outside was 90 f and sunny. This occurred at 15000 miles in July 09. Vehicle went to 3 service visits and dealers could not repeat.
