36 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 10/02/2017

While driving on the highway with no vehicles or obstacles in front of me, the break assist collision avoidance went off indicating an imminent collision and stopping the car. Perhaps related to the same issue, a few minutes after this incident the computer also displayed an error message stating that the automatic windshield wipers were not working properly.

37 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 09/20/2017

I was involved in a serious accident on 9/20/2017 while driving my 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. I was driving slowly out of a fast food parking lot and approached the exit intending to turn right onto the road. I saw there was oncoming traffic, and applied my brakes to stop and wait for the traffic to pass. I'm positive that I had my foot on the brake, but instead of stopping, my car surged forward into the road and into the path of a semi truck. The brakes weren't working. I started to reach for the emergency brake, but I had already hit the semi- truck by then. The first impact happened on the front driver's side of my car, then the car spun around and the second impact hit the rear driver's side of my car, the car continued to spin around and stopped when it hit a utility pole next to the entrance/exit of the fast food restaurant. Fortunately no one was injured or killed. I am 100% certain that some kind of malfunction happened with my car. I know I had my foot on the brake. I've had several recalls on this Jeep for repairs and software updates, and I believe at least a couple of them were related to the transmission. After the accident, I searched the NHTSA website, and I found several other reports of the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee surging forward when the brakes are applied. There are also many other complaints of this model Grand Cherokee having many problems with the transmission, power train, and brake systems. I have already submitted a complaint to Jeep about the accident.

The manufacturer was not contacted and was not made aware of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure. Parts distribution disconnect. Sj.

39 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 08/04/2017

On August 4, 2017 after starting my Jeep and driving away from parking space I had no brakes at all when trying to stop - fortunately I wasn't going more than 25 mph when I noticed the problem - I was able to coast into a curb and stop. There was no prior warning and no warning lights and the brakes seemed ok the night before when I parked the car. I had to have the car towed to a dealer where they charged me $718. 54 to install a new power brake booster which they said was no longer under warranty. The Jeep had 42834 miles at the time. If this had happened on I-25 which is where I was heading I would not have been able to stop at all.

40 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 02/06/2017

I currently own a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee and have had a significant number of issues with the vehicle with zero help from the manufacturer that include items regarding my lights shutting of during night driving, my engine shutting down 3 times while pulling onto a major highway as well as my brakes malfunctioning while driving on a major interstate. I had had other issues but as the manufacturer has been uncooperative and I am stuck with an unsafe vehicle with a child on the way I would like to make sure I file a complaint in as many places as I can before I simply look to get rid of this vehicle. All issues occured while the vehicle was in motion and all have occurred while on the highway during the first year of ownership but as the service center never documented my items properly I was stuck with a lemon as I put 50k miles on in the first year due to my commute to my employer from milford, nh to burlington, MA before moving back to MA where I purchased the vehicle. The most recent issue was my brake booster which leaks water into it and freezes during cold weather and my vehicle has been sitting around since Feb as the dealership will not cover it as they claim to have already replaced the recalled item so I am in the middle of a dispute over that now as well. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

41 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 01/31/2017

I filed case # 10854550 on 4/9/16 following an active braking system malfunction where my vehicle braked on its own with no vehicles or other obstacles in my path on 3/31/16. I filed case #10948159 following an incident on 1/9/17 where the collision warning system went off and the active breaking feature engaged, despite no risk of collision. Further, the active breaking feature was turned off in my vehicle settings. The dealership service department has reported to me that nothing is wrong with my vehicle, following an inspection. But yet again, on January 31, 2017, my collision warning system went off and the active breaking feature engaged, despite no risk of collision. The feature has remained disabled per my vehicle settings. In this instance I was driving in stop and go traffic with my cousin and my almost 19 month old son in the car. Out of nowhere, the systems listed above engaged. I really do not know what to do. I feel at risk, and worse, I feel I am endangering my child by driving in my car. Short of selling it and passing this risk on to someone else, I am at a loss in terms of what can be done.

42 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 01/14/2017

The vehicle rolled down the driveway when it was in park and the ignition was off. It did not slide, it rolled. I immediately drove it back up the driveway, put it in park, set the parking brake, and turned off the ignition. I excited the vehicle, and about 2 minutes later it did the same thing. Please note: the Jeep had already received the software update for the April 2016 recall involving the gear shifter/rollaways (see ea1600). I believe this is a different issue because the ignition was off when the rollaways occurred.

43 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 01/09/2017

I filed case # 10854550 on 4/9/16 following an active braking system malfunction where my vehicle braked on its own with no vehicles or other obstacles in my path on 3/31/16. Following this incident, I went to the Jeep dealership and spoke with a service advisor who checked for error codes (there were none) and explained that this model and year of Jeep had an issue with the active braking feature, stating that keeping the camera clean can help, and he proceeded to clean my camera. But because this was a known issue, I did not leave my vehicle for further inspection. At the time of this incident, my not yet nine month old son was in the car with me, so to avoid any safety concerns surrounding this braking feature, I turned the active braking setting off in my car to disable the feature. The feature has remained off since that time. However on 1/9/17 I was stopped in traffic at a red signal. The light changed to green so I proceeded to move forward. The vehicle in front of me hesitated in moving forward, so I took my foot off the gas. Before I had the chance to use the brake, the collision warning system went off and the active breaking feature engaged. I was shocked, to say the least. I immediately pulled over and checked my vehicle settings. The feature was supposedly still turned off. At this point I was extremely worried for the safety of my now 1. 5 year old son who was once again with me, so I took my vehicle to the Jeep dealership for inspection. The dealership was unable to recreate the issue, and therefore nothing could be done to address it. I had previously come to terms with the fact that I would not be able to use one of the very useful safety features of my vehicle due to its known malfunction, however now I am at a loss as I am clearly unable to disable the feature and have any confidence in knowing that it will not engage anyway.

44 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 12/01/2016

Fca refuses to do open recalls they claim vehicle was in missouri with 69k miles on it. Vehicle is a 1 owner Chrysler capital lease return with 29k miles used and seviced in California only. 5 open recalls.

45 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 11/05/2016

The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that the vehicle accelerated while the brake pedal was depressed. As a result, the contact rear ended another vehicle. The air bags failed to deploy. There were no injuries and a police report was not filed. The vehicle was towed to the dealer. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, but was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 32,000.

46 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 10/17/2016

I was traveling 35mph on the on ramp to a major highway when the automatic braking system turned itself on. There was no obstruction in front of me and the system was turned off. The car started beeping and the car skidded to a complete stop in the middle of the on ramp on it's own, there was no way I could control the vehicle. The incident almost resulted in a collision. This is the second time this has happened.

47 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2016

Adaptive cruise control and collision avoidance did not work properly, and resulted in a collision. I was driving on a highway, relying on the adaptive cruise control and the automatic breaking, a feature of collision avoidance. There was a slow down in traffic, and although the system slowed down and applied break, it did so too late to stop car. As I got too close, I applied steady pressure on the break, but I still hit the car in front of me, who then hit the car in front of them. No significant damage to either of the other cars, and mine has minor cosmetic damage, and the adaptive cruise control is now not working properly. Could have been significantly worse. Makes me really question the potential for self-driving cars.

48 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 08/31/2016

Twice now since I purchased this vehicle (in April of this year) I have experienced incidents of what appear to be random proximity collision alerts (indicated by brake!! on the console) followed by a sudden automatic braking, for which I discerned no pending threats in the line of travel. This action resulted in an unexpected and very unnerving sudden drop in vehicle speed in traffic; in the latter case I was almost rear-ended as a result of the extremely harsh braking action.

49 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 08/22/2016

2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee auto brakes for no reason, it sensed a stopped vehicle in the left turning lane and slammed on the brakes twice, I was in the left lane going 35 miles per hour; this has happened in the past also. I did report this to the manufacturer about six months ago via email, I saved the emails and their response. I could have been rear ended by a vehicle behind me because of this problem, literally once it starts I have no control over what the vehicle does, there is no way to stop the Jeep from braking. I shudder to think if it happened on a freeway. I was traveling on a straight road going 35 miles per hour in the left lane. On the evening of 8/22/2016 I was driving in the dark and my automatic high beams malfunctioned several times. They used to work perfectly now they stay on and blind oncoming drivers and the drivers ahead of me, they also fail to come one when I am in the dark and there are no other cars; both incidents of high beam malfunction happened on a country road and on the freeway last night. This problem started immediately after I had the electronic shifter updated at the dealer and some other software updates that were due but I don't know what they did, I just know they were software related and part of a recall. Said vehicle is going back to the dealer for several hours of work on the software for both the high beams an the braking system on Thursday, August 25, 2016.

50 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 06/30/2016

Tl-the contact owns a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that while driving at 45 mph, the vehicle independently came to an abrupt stop. The contact stated that the forward collision avoidance system was turned off at the time. The failure recurred three times. The contact also stated that on several occasions, the headlights, taillights and the hazard light feature failed to operate. The vehicle was taken to be diagnosed however; the technician was unable to duplicate the failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 600.

51 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 06/20/2016

On two occasions, two weeks apart, the active braking feature functioned without obvious external cause. In both cases, the active braking system caused the antilock braking system (abs) to activate, causing the vehicle to stop abruptly. The following information applies to both instances: 1. Forward collision warning system (fcw) is on. 2. Fcw is set to near 3. Active braking feature set to on. 4. Vehicle speed approximately 30 mph 5. Asphalt four lane road without divider 6. Daylight, sunny, temperature about 80 degrees f 7. No vehicles in front or on either side. 8. No vehicles approaching. 9. No obstacles or perturbations on road surface. Second occasion occurred after dealer had installed latest software updates for all components. Dealer has inspected and driven the vehicle. No defect codes were found. Dealer could not duplicate event.

52 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 06/12/2016

Driving at 65 mph on a straight highway, with the automatic breaking system turned off, the car suddenly skidded to a complete stop.

53 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 06/06/2016

The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign numbers: 17v572000 (service brakes, service brakes, hydraulic) and 17v435000 (electrical system). The contact received the interim recall notice several months ago. The dealer (anchorage Chrysler Dodge Jeep ram center, 2601 e 5th Ave, anchorage, ak 99501, (907) 276-1331) was unable to verify when the remedy and parts would be supplied from the manufacturer. They estimated mid April of 2018. The interim recall notice did not give a specific date for when the remedy and repair part would become available. The manufacturer was contacted. The contact was not experiencing a failure. Parts distribution disconnect. VIN tool confirms parts not available.

54 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 05/18/2016

Forward collision warning and mitigation - engaged on a clear day, at freeway speed (55 mph), with no vehicles in front of me or beside me. My car braked hard and the 'brake!' flashed on the dashboard screen. If there had been a car behind me, I would've been rear ended.

55 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 05/11/2016

Driving approx. 20 mph in city traffic, car in front stopped suddenly. I tried to apply brakes and the auto-braking system also flashed on dashboard to "brake!" but when I tried to, the brakes were not as responsive as usual. I applied tremendous pressure on the brake pedal (so much so that my foot still hurts over a week later) and the brakes did not react as they typically do, so I hit the car in front of me.

56 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 03/31/2016

While pulling out onto a busy thoroughfare (cesar chavez st. In san francisco, CA) in my 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee overland on 3/31/16, my collision warning system went off, then the vehicle braked hard on its own via the brake assist system, engaging the anti-lock brake system, and bringing me to a stop in the middle of this busy road. However there was nothing/no one in front of me. This could very well have caused me to be t-boned or rear-ended with my 8 month old baby in the car. This was extremely scary and unexceptable! after describing the issue to my mother, she sent me an article from the wall street journal regarding this issue on 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokees. Clearly this is a more widespread issue than just a fluke affecting my vehicle.

57 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 02/08/2016

Forward collision warning (fcw) occasionally comes on without reason in city traffic, interstates, and country roads (no traffic or obstructions nearby) and at various speeds causing a "brake" warning signal and sometimes, not always, actually causing the vehicle to brake. Related to the fcw problem is a warning signal that frequently appears that indicates the adaptive cruise control/fcw are unavailable. Vehicle has been in shop numerous times and except for one time that the dealership found a part missing, the dealership continues to indicate they cannot duplicate the problem. The problem remains on-going and has not been resolved. The date of occurance below is the most recent event with the "brake" warning.

58 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 01/12/2016

We have had 4 incidents of unintended braking (pe15-021) from the collision control system. Extreme autonomous braking when nothing was in the way. Additionally, we had one case of unintended acceleration in low speed (less than 10 mph) stop & go commuter traffic resulting in a rear end crash with damage to our Jeep and the vehicle in front of us and the next vehicle in front of them (3 vehicles total). Jeep accelerated hard on its own without pressing the gas pedal.

59 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 12/26/2015

Car braking system activated automatically on its own on multiple occasions, anti-collision warning system is not turned on. Latest incident occurred on December 26, 2015, driving 45 mph on a highway with no traffic or obstacles around the word "brake" appeared on dashboard in red and brakes were suddenly engaged. Incident before was driving 60 mph on the interstate and the brakes engaged again with the word "brake" flashing on dash again anti collision system was not on.

60 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2015

The collision avoidance system activates and slams on the brakes without cause while traveling forward which is startling and dangerous because I have been nearly rear ended by another driver for braking without cause. When parking the gear selector feels like it is in park it is actually in reverse or neutral. Brakes squeak and were wearing groves into rotors when vehicle was brand new. Also the front bumper has never fit correctly as well as the fender moldings peeling off. Very sad for a $55,000 vehicle.

61 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 09/16/2015

Last night, I was driving at normal speed down the road and person ahead of me braked gradually to make a turn. I began to softly brake. I had a generous amount of space between me and the car ahead of me - at least 5-6 car lengths. The forward collision warning system activated and slammed on the brakes, causing the car behind me to nearly rear-end me. The system should not have activated as there was no reasonable threat of collision. This is not the first time this has happened and I understand the NHTSA is investigating this system so I decided to file a complaint in order to assist the investigation. The system works well when it needs to but it has false positives often. It is somewhat terrifying when your car just decides to slam on the brakes with no cause and there is a legitimate cause for concern when it does. Other drivers behind me may be unprepared to stop and could cause a crash.

62 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 08/26/2015

When I apply the brakes the front end shakes pretty badly. I also have an issue when I excellerate moderately the vehicle seems to take off leaving me feeling out of control and having to take my foot off the gas and watching the rpm hit 6000. I have also had issues with the transmission and a total of 5 recalls. I have had time in court trying to fight it using the lemon law but lost because of not having an attorney and a transmission specialist I couldn't afford either. I notice my problems at 1900 miles but I lost because they said I used it for commercial use which I don't because I don't have it registered as a commercial vehicle I just drive a lot for work at the time. This vehicle has caused me loads of stress since I bought it and feel very unsafe driving my kids around. Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated I'm at my wits end. I bought my Jeep early in 2013 so I feel its one of the first Jeep off the assembly line with lots of issues. Thanks.

66 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 06/02/2015

On the highway the "forward collision warning with stop" system needlessly engaged. The vehicle brakes automatically were applied by the car on its won causing it to decelerate rapidly fishtailing uncontrollably. It was raining. This is not the first time the situation occurred.

67 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 05/28/2015

My car is equipped with a forward collision warning that will signal you when you are too close to a vehicle and automatically engages the brake if a collision is imminent. The car has 3 times now signaled and engaged the brakes when there were no vehicles near me. The first two times this happened I was driving on the freeway going approximately 65 mph with no cars in my visible sight and the signal alarmed and then the car braked on it's own. This again happened yesterday 6/29/15 while I was turning left through an intersection with a green arrow and the vehicle braked while I was accelerating. A car behind me had to hit their brakes and swerve to avoid rear ending me. Each time I bring the vehicle to the dealership they tell me that they can't fix a problem that they can't replicate.

68 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 05/24/2015

My daughter was parking her 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee outside of a retail store. As she slowed and pulled into a parking space, the Jeep suddenly surged forward, jumping the curb, crossing a sidewalk, going through a small grass median, and into a different area of the parking lot. The police report, oklahoma city police department report, case number 15-redacted, accurately records the “surge. ” the officer’s conclusion was driver error. Through research I have found numerous similar complaints concerning 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokees. I called the service manager for the Jeep dealership where we purchased the vehicle. I told him about the accident and that when the Jeep came in for repair, I wanted the accident data preserved. He told me the only data that he could obtain was Jeep’s proprietary information, which I could not have. A representative form my insurance company is adamant that we, as the owners of the Jeep, have a right to any information captured by the Jeep’s systems. However, the insurance company had no way to obtain that information when they appraised the damage to the Jeep. I need help in obtaining the data by someone outside of Jeep who can access it, or help to compel Jeep to provide me with the information, hence this online submission. . Read more...
