Email to jack danielson from constituent regarding her 2004 Jeep Liberty which was purchased after the 2006 recall relative to front ball joints and now is experiencing problems and is seeking help.
Ball joints are worn down, if they slip control will be lost of the car. Ball joints are unusually worn down for my car with such little miles out onto it.
Two issues as follows; 1) the lower front ball joints had deteriorated and make a loud popping and clunking noise when turning at low speeds. Our mechanic says the lower front ball joints have completely failed, creating a very dangerous safety issue. 2) the airbag light stays on, does not turn off.

I was driving 40mph down the road straight not even turning and my ball joint broke off landing on my rim splitting it in two. The axle is now being pulled out leaking fluid the tire is ruined (only 6 months old).
When on vacation getting ready to drive back home from nc to NY turning into a parking lot the right front ball joint snapped. We had to have the vehicle towed to have it repaired only to find out when we arrived home and I looked up online that there had been an previous recall on this that I was never notified of. The repair tech ripped the "better brand" more expensive moog brand boot when he put it on and didn't tell us. We didn't find out until arriving home & then we had to take it to another shop 45 min away to have it repaired again. . If we had been notified previously we would have had this taken care of prior to and had it fixed the right way. Thankfully we were pulling into a gas station parking lot at the time of the incident and not 20 min later when we were driving 65 mph down the highway or this could have caused a serious accident.
My husband is a mechanic. He and his employer were trying to maneuver a 2004 Jeep Liberty into the work stall from the parking lot. The Jeep had a broken ball joint (a condition that they later found was under recall notice) and would not steer, so my husband was guiding it with a floor jack while his boss was behind the wheel, braking when necessary to help control forward momentum. The vehicle was idling. This is standard procedure, one carried out many times by both men. Both men have at least 25 years of experience each as auto mechanics. There is a lip just at the door of the shop to prevent water from coming in, and when the Jeep came to this lip, the vehicle tipped slightly, and the right front tire touched the ground. Instantly, the engine revved and the vehicle jumped forward at full power. The boss literally stood as hard as he could on the brake but to no effect. The vehicle left a long black skid line behind it where the back tires were trying to brake, but the front tires were continuing to accelerate. My husband was hit and dragged fifteen feet then crushed against an upright support. According to both mechanics, the front wheels should not have had power to them, since the vehicle was not in four-wheel drive and cannot put itself into four-wheel drive: a lever must be raised manually. My husband had to be life flighted to emmanuel hospital where he was diagnosed with a collapsed lung, broken nose, broken collarbone, nine broken ribs, and a broken ankle. He also suffered general crushing of most of his body. A broken left rib was diagnosed two weeks later. The Jeep was taken to a local Chrysler dealership for repair of the broken ball joint and the transmission pan, damaged in the accident.

Com I was leaving a parking lot in my 2004 Jeep Liberty when I heard a bang, and my car stopped moving. I pushed the accelerator but the car did not move, it only shook and made a loud noise. When I got out of my car I noticed that all the tires were still inflated and that there were little pieces of curled metal underneath my car. The tow truck driver stated that my suspension had broken, and that the tire fell off my car, but was caught by something, hence the curled pieces of metal. The tire finally fell off the car when we towed it to the dealership. The dealership where I had bought the car from sold, and is now under new management. The car could not be fixed at that location because the mechanic was not skilled enough to handle the damage. The car then had to be towed down the street to the dealerships other location. I was told that the left and right ball joints were replaced on the car and that a new wheel was order, but is on back order. The service department stated that even without the new wheel, my car was ready and safe to drive.
2004 Jeep Liberty sport with only 37k miles. Driver's side ball joint fell off while driving. Subsequent hole in wheel caused blowout & had to be towed. Fortunately vehicle was going only 30 mph and traveling straight, otherwise, serious injury or death could have resulted.
My 2004 Jeep Liberty, with 37,000 miles, failed when the front ball joint snapped, sending the undercarriage into the concrete. Upon inspection, it was found the other ball joint was ready to snap as well. I understand this is a common Liberty problem. I have been in contact with Chrysler and my lawyer. Had I been going faster than 10 mph, I could have been killed. I would hope Chrysler will have some compassion for their customers and fix this problem before someone dies. They should also repair, at no charge, this defect immediately.

Consumer letter concerning the 2004 Liberty recall. The consumer never received the recall notice for the ball joints. The consumer found out about the recall on the Jeep website. The consumer contacted the local dealer who informed him that since he did not purchase the vehicle from them that they could not get the replacement parts until next April.
