Whenever I fill the gas tank the gas pump clicks off when the tank is full, but gas surges up the spout and dumps on the ground. This has nothing to do with the type of gas (premium or regular, or ethanol or no ethanol) or the setting on the pump handle (fast or slow). This is a fire, explosion risk as well as an environmental problem. I really don't expect you to do anything until after people are hurt or killed, but when that happens I want to be able to say "you knew about the problem, and didn't care".
While putting gas in the tank I have to put it in very slow or it will shut off, then when the gas tank gets close to full gas will gush out. Also some times I smell gas inside the vehicle.
Fuel shoots out of inlet when filling gas tank. During one of the many incidents the fuel shot out about 18 inches from the filler inlet.
Every time I fill my fuel tank the gasoline overflows and spills all over the vehicle and ground. This will happen when I fill automatically or manually.
After over 3 years of no problems when fueling our Liberty, we began to have gas spew out at every fill-up. The pump does not shut off when the tank is full, and gas comes back out forcefully enough to hit the person pumping the gasoline.
When filling up at a gas station, the gas tank over flows before the pump stops. I originally thought it was a broken pump, however, I have now filled up over 4 times at 4 different gas stations and the problem continues to happen. This most recent time I have lost around 1/2 gallon of gas on the ground. I am also concerned with the effect of the gas on my paint/car body.
The last 3 times I have filled the gas tank on my vehicle, gas has overflowed onto the ground. After the 2nd time, the check engine light came on. I brought it to the dealership and was advised the code read that the filler neck was faulty and needed to be replaced. I advised them that I had an issue with gas overflowing onto the ground when filling up and was advised it "may" be fixed by the new filler neck since there is a sensor in there. I had the filler neck replaced. I filled the Jeep again today, roughly a week after having the filler neck replaced, and again gas overflowed and leaked down the side of my Jeep and onto the ground. Up until this point, when filling my Jeep, the gas pump would click off when the tank was full. I have gone to three different gas stations so it is not a problem with the pump at the station.
When filling gas tank it splashes out and get all over the Jeep and the person filling the tank.
At the end of filling gas tank, gas backwashes out of the filling tube down the side of the car and onto the ground.
Every time I fill the gas tank, fuel gushes out of the filler neck onto the side of the vehicle and onto the ground. Most times, the automatic fuel shutoff a the gas pump . . . . At various stations . . . Does not stop the flow. At other times, fuel gushes out even if the pump shuts off. I have tried slowing the rate fuel goes into the tank. Sometimes this works. Other times, it doesn't. The only way to avoid this potentially dangerous situation is to try to calculate how much fuel it will take to fill the vehicle and then stop the flow myself a couple of gallons early. There is a Jeep TSB out on this problem. And there have been numerous complaints. The fule spillage issue is dangerous and should be a recall item.
Every time I go to fill my tank with gas there is a spill over. I have been to multiple different filling stations and get the same result every time. Gasoline always runs down the side of the car as the tank reaches fuel capacity. Gasoline spills out of the tank, down the side of the Jeep, on to the ground, and even gets on my hands, clothes, and shoes. This is totally unacceptable! I have never had such an issue with something as simple as fueling a vehicle. I have owned this vehicle for less than 2 months. I purchased the vehicle used from carmax. I plan on contacting them regarding this problem. I have read other complaints online for the same year and model as my Jeep. I feel that this is a major defect that warrants a total recall on all 2008 Jeep Liberty models. I don't like having to worry about ingesting gasoline when I eat because my hands were covered in gasoline. I don't like breathing the noxious fumes while I'm inside my car because fuel from a defective fuel tank has spilled on to my clothes and shoes.
Gas tank overflows after it is filled. Jeep service told me it is caused by a cut-off valve defect no longer covered by warranty and that the repair costs $750. 00 and involves replacing the entire fuel tank. I see from the internet that this problem is common to this vehicle. Have you previously been made aware of it and is it the subject of a recall? it is obviously a very dangerous situation as the gas literally spews out of the vehicle.
Every time I fill up with gas, the gas spews from the filler neck when the tank is full. This happens whether the nozzle shuts off automatically or if I shut it off manually to try to prevent it from spewing out. This happens no matter which gas station I fill up at, whether it's near home or out of town. I have driven many, many makes of automobiles since 1956 (that's 56 years) and this is the first vehicle that ever gave me this problem.
Every time I fill up my Jeep the pump will shut off when the tank is full and I remove the pump and gas will bubble out of the tank and runs down the side of the vehicle.
2008 Jeep Liberty limited 4x4, "burps" gasoline out of the gas tank every time I fill up with gas. I have filled up at multiple gas stations and every time the pump stops filling when full, but the Jeep spits out gas after the pump stops. I can't believe there is no recall on this problem, since I see this as a very serious safety concern.
Every time I fill up my 2008 Jeep Liberty the gas tank does not shut off properly and gas spills out all over my Jeep and the ground. This happens every time I get gas and it doesn't matter what gas station I go to.
The contact owns a 2008 Jeep Liberty. The contact stated while adding gasoline to the fuel tank the fuel would spill out. The dealer was contacted but offered no assistance. The manufacturer informed the contact to talk to NHTSA regarding the failure. The failure mileage was 64,000.
The contact owns a 2008 Jeep Liberty. The contact stated the while refueling the vehicle, fuel spilled from the pump and onto the ground. The failure was experienced numerous times. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who performed a diagnosed that located the failure at the fuel tank and advised that it would need to be replaced. The manufacturer was contacted (case number 21321679) and advised that they would cover fifty percent of the cost for repairs. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 27,355 and the current mileage was 29,000.
Just bought a 2008 Jeep Liberty. Everytime I fill the gas tank up it spits gas out all over the place. Both automatic and manual operation (fill up), it does not matter. Why???.
We purchased a 2008 Jeep Liberty used from a toledo dealership in April of 2011. The fuel auto shut-off does not work at all, and every time we top off the tank fuel ends up "burping" all over the side of the vehicle, onto the ground, and in some cases onto the person fueling the vehicle. Even the salesperson complained that she got fuel on her when we asked her to top it off before we drove it off the lot. This seems to be the exact same issue that we had with our 2007 Jeep wrangler unlimited. However, there was a safety recall for that and a new fuel tank and neck had to be installed that fixed the problem. It seems to me that there should be a safety recall on the 2008 Jeep Liberty to fix what seems to be an identical problem that was recalled and remediated. Every time I've contacted the original and local dealerships regarding the issue I've been told that there is nothing wrong with the vehicle.
The contact owns a 2008 Jeep Liberty. The contact stated that while refueling the vehicle with gasoline, the fuel spilled back out onto the side of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who stated they would repair the vehicle if the contact would pay a $250 deductible fee. The manufacturer was contact who stated they would replace the fuel tank, but at the contacts expense. There were no recalls for the vehicle. The failure mileage was 43,000.
I just bought a used 2008 Jeep Liberty with 32,000 miles. This did not happen until after a few fill ups, but now gas spews out after filling the tank. I gets all over the car, the ground and my shoes.
The gas tank overflows every time fuel is pumped into the vehicle. This happens at all gas stations and regardless of how slowly the tank is filled. The problem started seemingly out of the blue with no accidents or damage to the car prior. Gas sprays out of the filler tube as soon as the pump is removed, getting the person wet if they do not know to stand aside. Gas also runs down the side of the vehicle. This is both a safety issue and an environmental / emissions issue that should be addressed by Jeep. The interior smells of gas for a couple of hours after each overflow incident. We took it in for service and they said the entire gas tank would have to be replaced to fix the valve that has failed. We are out of warranty and feel this should be a safety recall and/or emissions warranty covered item. After looking online for solutions to the problem I have discovered that it is endemic to many Jeep Liberty and Jeep wrangler vehicles made over the past several years. Jeep has only offered to fix the problem for wranglers from 2007-08.
Putting gasoline into my 2008 Jeep Liberty, the gas pump shuts off as expected however gasoline spews out of the Jeep's filling system. Tried different pumps same results, this occus without "topping off the tank". This I a serious safety hazard with gas being spilled on my clothing, shoes, hands, vehicle and ground. Once this happens the interior of the vehicle smells like gas causing headaches and breathing problems. I am just waiting for someone to cause a spark at the gas pump to ignite me. I have seen numerous complaints on various internet forums stating the same issues, this tells me that this is a real problem that Jeep has not addressed.
We have an overflowing gas tank. When pump clicks that the tank is full gas comes pouring out onto myself and the side of the vehicle onto the ground.
When filling the gas tank with gas it over fills everytime. The pump is stopped when full, but it will over fill enough to where it will come spraying out.
Fuel spill during refueling. While refueling the car, when the tank was almost full, fuel started to spill resulting in spraying the car and the ground withing 3 feet radius with gas. This creates a risk of fire and health hazards by spilling gas onto skin. Chrysler/Jeep is aware of the problem and they have a TSB for this problem but refuse to make a recall. They are also aware of the problem on this particular vehicle and the vehicle was at the dealer service center 3 times for this particular problem but so far they have failed to fix the issue.
2008 Jeep Liberty with 45k miles. Now with gas tank overflow when filling both automatically and manually. Gas overflows onto car and ground every time tank is filled completely, doesn't matter how you adjust nozzle or which gas stations is used. Dealer unable to locate problem despite mulitple complaints filed to various safety agencies. Huge safety and health consequences.
2008 Jeep Liberty. I have owned the vehicle for 3 years and 5 months. It has 43,000 miles. Four months ago the issue began while filling the car with gas. The gas pump does not turn off when the tank is full causing an overflow of gasoline onto the car and ground. This happens every time we refuel. Several people have refueled just to ensure it was not user error and the same thing happens. We have also used many different gas stations. I have contacted the dealer and their response is that an issue has not been found and a recall has not been issued. The consumer stated Chrysler agreed to pay for the fuel tank replacement and therefore request to delete this complaint. Updated 06/07/11.
We just bought a 2008 Jeep Liberty with 25000 miles on it and everytime we fill up it spews gas. I have tried putting the gas nozzle in farther, out half way, filling it up slowly but still everytime the nozzle clicks about a second or two later gas spews from the tank.
Jeep Liberty 2008 gas gushing out every time after filling tank - according to dealer, roll-over valve is faulty inside gas tank so entire gas tank must be replaced (about $800+). This valve ensures that gas will not leak into vehicle in the event of a roll-over accident; also ensures gas won't shoot out of the gas tank after filling with fuel. Gas erupts out of tank and back onto the face, body and feet of the consumer as well as all down the side of vehicle and onto the ground near gas pumps. Very unsafe hazard. Not a maintenance problem but rather a defective part inside the gas tank. Should not be the consumer's responsibility to replace. Vehicle is only 2 1/2 years old with 40,000 miles logged. This occurs each and every time the tank is filled whether or not it is on auto-fill or manually regulated. Tricky work to manually stop gas flow before it gushes out. Lodged complaint with Jeep of America but was told only possible recourse was to pay for repair myself; submit claim to them after the fact, and they may or may not decide to assist me with costs (they won't call it reimbursement) for some or all of my expenses. They claimed no responsibility and complete lack of knowledge about the problem although this concern is posted all over the internet in various forums. Thank you.
I bought the car in 2009 as the second owner with 18,000 miles on it. About 6 months ago every time I fill up the gas tank it overflows and sprays gas all over the place. At first I thought it was the station but after using multiple stations I now have to estimate how much gas is left in the tank and then try and fill it up. This needs to be fixed as it is a major safety issue.
2008 Jeep Liberty. Consumer states several problems with the vehicle the consumer stated each time he filled the gas tank, gasoline spilled out of the fill opening moments after the nozzle shut off was triggered. The spill occurred in a boiling type manner and the volume of the spill was significant. The consumer also stated, throughout the three years he has owned the vehicle, he had a problem with rain getting inside the vehicle. The point of entry appeared to be at the top of the rear lift gate. The water volume was significant and not only soaked the rear bed, but it also ran to the front of the vehicle and soaked the front passenger carpet. The problem has been fixed twice, with the report that some drains ports were clogged. The last repair involved some additional caulking.
I purchased my 2008 Jeep Liberty 4x4 in November 2010, and every single time I have filled up with gas, the fuel spills out of the tank just as the nozzel shuts off. This has happened at every gas station and every type of pump I have used. It is very frustrating because the gas runs down the side of the vehicle (near the exhaust), onto the ground, and often gets on me. I cannot imagine this is safe. Not only is the spill harmful to the environment, it is also a fire hazzard. And, with fuel prices creeping up, I become more and more frustrated at this wasted fuel that I am paying for. I have contacted my dealership about the issue and they informed me that a similar issue was found in 2007-2008 Jeep wranglers, but there was no recall. Please make Chrysler take responsibility for the faulty valve that is supposedly causing this issue - for the safety and piece of mind of all loyal Jeep owners.
I own a 2008 Jeep Liberty. I am the second owner and purchased in late November 2010. The mileage at purchase was only 8,000 miles. When I filled the tank for the very first time, it overflowed, spilling gas down the side of the Jeep, on my feet, clothes, hands, etc. Every time I fill the tank, it over flows. I feel that this is highly unsafe as well as an inconvenience. I have to constantly shut off the pump early to avoid an overflow. I took it to the dealership and they informed me that I need a new gas tank at $730. I am now at 17,000 miles, well under the 3yr/36,000 mile warranty but due to the date, the warranty is expired. This is unsafe and ridiculous. A vehicle with 8,000 miles should not have gas spilling out of the tank at every fill. I understand that there is a current recall on wranglers for the same issue but nothing is being done about the Liberty.
