While driving through a grocery store parking lot, the vehicle suddenly accelerated to 4000rpm. Thankfully, due to quick thinking, I got on the brakes, put the car in neutral and turned the ignition off. Something is seriously wrong. Thank god I didn't mow down the 4 people walking in front of me. A quick search of the internet reveals this to be a common problem with Jeeps. How in the world has this issue not been a recall??!!.

5 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2002 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 10/01/2016

On 10/1/16 I was pulling into my driveway to park my 2002 Jeep Liberty when the vehicle suddenly accelerated at a high rate of speed, crashing through my garage door. With both feet on the brake pedal and the hand brake applied the Jeep would not stop. It smashed into my wife's car parked in the garage, slamming it into the garage refrigerator. With brakes still applied I attempted to shift to neutral to shut off engine when it slammed into reverse and at great speed careened out of the garage and down the street. At no time did I feel I had control of my vehicle. It finally stopped when it hit shrubbery and small boulders. When I start my Jeep when engine cold, the rpm's are high as though I pushed doen on accelerator. On 6-13-15 while at a traffic light waiting for the green light (foot on brake)the Jeep suddenly accelerated and smashed the car in front of us, causing extensive damage. The insurance CO has totaled my wife's car, we have a damaged refrigerator, we need a new garage door and have a Jeep Liberty that we are now afraid to drive. I have read many, many identical complaints on this site regarding 2002-2008 Jeep Liberty-I could have written their stories-and I have little faith that I will ever drive my Jeep again. How many complaints and injuries before Chrysler admits they have a problem? didn't read about any deaths so I guess there's your answer.

6 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2002 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 07/19/2016

When applying the brakes to stop the vehicle has spontaneously accelerated to a very high speed even though you are standing on the brake with both feet. The back wheels are spinning out of control, burning rubber, and you have to put the vehicle in neutral and turn off the engine. It happens intermittently and has happened several times (all on city streets). We have had two different modules replaced (don't remember what they were called) and it continues to happen.

7 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2008 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 04/29/2016

I was on my way back to work during my lunch hour driving on alexander st. In corpus christi texas. That street has several dips. As I drove over one of the dips the Jeep suddenly accelerated in such a speed that I was unable to stop it and it hit a parked car. My car was approximately 10 feet from the parked car which made it almost impossible for me to avoid hitting the car. I firmly believe the accident was a result of "sudden unintended acceleration" there is no other way to explain this unfortunate accident. With all the dips on that street it is impossible to speed, additionally it is right in front of a school which has a speed limit of no more than 15 mph. If this had occurred in a different area this could have been catastrophic, fatally injuring myself and family or another human being. . Read more...

17 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2009 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 05/06/2009

I own a 2009 Jeep Liberty with 2000 miles on it. Twice it has suddenly accelerated on it's own when I was starting from a stopped position to pull into a parking space. The first time I was able to stop it using the brakes before it jumped over the curb. The second time it happened so fast I couldn't stop it in time and it hit a large concrete column in front of the parking space. The car suffered quite a lot of body damage and will be in a body shop for 3 or more weeks. I suffered several skin wounds on my hand and arm and a sprained thumb. After talking with several mechanic friends, here is what I think might have happened. In both cases I was making an extreme left turn into a right-slanted parking space from a two-lane aisle. In both cases I had just crossed over a safety bump and stopped to let oncoming traffic go by before I turned. In both cases, it was hot and my air conditioner was turned to high. The combination of the load of the air and the power steering could have been enough to show up a defect in the electronic control throttle sensor software and cause the sudden acceleration. This is the only explanation that I have been able to find. I'm sure it was not driver error. I have driven Jeeps for many years and never have had an accident in all my years of driving. I would appreciate your analysis of this problem before it results in more serious accidents for Jeep Liberty owners. Thank you.

Driver had just completed turn on to an approach ramp to a 4 lane highway. As Jeep Liberty started down ramp it sped up with no pedal pressure. The Jeep pulled sharply to the left, the driver was able to correct but because of continued increase of speed hit guard rail on opposite side of ramp. The driver had both feet on the brake and held Jeep against guard rail for approx 300 ft before being able to stop. The uncontrolled acceleration had caused the Jeep to swerve side to side and it was only the skill of the driver that prevented this Jeep from going over the edge of the ramp and rolling over. The driver received a broken wrist in her effort to keep the Jeep on the road. The Jeep was taken to the local dealer and is still sitting there. The manufacturer has inspected the Jeep and told the dealer not to touch it. They have not responded to phone calls about what is wrong and when the owners may expect their Jeep back, in driving condition. The only answer the owners have received is the manufacturers legal dept has the file. The road on the date of this incident was dry and the Jeep had approx 27000 miles on it. The owners would like to know if someone can tell them how many more Jeeps have had this problem and what is being done about it. How many deaths in Jeeps are the result of excess speed. Could these be the result of this type of uncontrolled acceleration.
