1 Fuel Pump problem of the 2005 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 10/28/2011

The fuel tank appears to not properly vent whiling refueling which causes the fuel pump to kick off and fuel to be ejected from the tank while refueling. Even when you try to refill the tank very slowly the problem is still present. Some fuel stations don't have pumps that operate at a slow enough flow rate for me to be able to fill the tank. It takes about 15 to 20 minutes to fill the 20 gallon tank.

5 Fuel Pump problem of the 2008 Jeep Liberty

Fuel overflows out of the filler tube after the fuel pump is shut off, even when filling it at a low flow rate. It started occuring when the vehicle had approximately 55,000 miles.

Failure Date: 11/30/2010

The contact owns a 2007 Jeep Liberty. The contact was entering a parking space when the vehicle stalled without warning. The vehicle was then towed to the dealer and they advised him that the fuel pump had failed and would need to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired for the fuel pump. The manufacturer was contacted and they offered a reimbursement. In addition, the contact stated that when driving at low speeds and attempting a turn, the steering would become hard to maneuver. The vehicle was later inspected by a dealer and they advised her that the rack and pinion and the power steering pump needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired for the pump alone. The failure mileage was approximately 38,000.

7 Fuel Pump problem of the 2005 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 10/15/2010

My 2005 Jeep Liberty limited 4wd overflows its fuel tank every time it is refueled. The vehicle has less than 30,000 miles on it, and this problem has appeared consistently each of the last 5 times I have refueled. The fuel will continue to fill and then overflow the tank unless manually stopped. The problem occurs regardless of where the fueling occurs; any fuel pump causes the problem. The problem must lie in the fuel tank system of the vehicle itself.

8 Fuel Pump problem of the 2006 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 10/27/2009

The contact owns a used 2006 Jeep Liberty which was purchased in 2008. He stated that when adding gasoline, the fuel pump would not shut-off and the gasoline fuel would overflow from tank. The failure and current mileages were 75,000. 06/28/jb.

9 Fuel Pump problem of the 2007 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 10/01/2009

When refueling our 2007 Jeep Liberty, fuel overflows after fuel pump automatic shutoff is triggered. This overflow now occurs every time vehicle is refueled. No one is attempting to "top off" the fuel tank. The overflow causes a quantity of fuel, which I estimate at two to four cups, to spill on the side of the vehicle and onto the ground. This fuel overflow flaw creates an extreme fire hazard and environmental contamination risk. This flaw occurs in the wrangler model of Chrysler Jeep products also, where a recall has been issued. The same flaw is occurring in many thousands of Jeep Liberty's as is evident by the huge volume of owner statements posted on many websites. This was an occasional problem that has now become consistent. It is impossible to predict and without a recall notice, consumers are unaware of this hazard. This flaw creates a safety hazard for the person refueling the vehicle and anyone nearby (specifically my children who are often with me when fueling our Jeep). The fuel spilled has caused property damage in the form of ruined clothing and shoes, and possibly damage to the vehicle as fuel runs down the side into crevices around the rear wheel and axle. Why would the manufacturer cover this flaw under warranty for one make and model, the Jeep wrangler, and not cover the identical problem for another make and model, the Jeep Liberty? it's the same problem created by the same manufacturer.

11 Fuel Pump problem of the 2006 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 06/25/2008

This incident started in 2008 and at the time thought it was a failure of the gas pump at the gas station but now the problem is more common and happens weekly, recently splashing gasoline into my eyes which required fluid eye rinse and medical attention. Every time I fill up the tank on my 2006 Jeep Liberty, the gas begins to overflow and splashes back, out of the fuel inlet opening. This in turn sprays fuel out at a force, and then onto the ground. Recently this happened and sprayed fuel into my eyes, on onto my clothes. Not only is this a safety issue, but also a major fire hazard. It is my understanding after talking with the dealer that this is a known problem with Jeep Liberty's in that the fuel tank's inlet check valve is faulty which in turn fails to automatically shut off the gas station fuel pump in time. This is my formal complaint that I was injured due to a known, faulty part/component of the Jeep Liberty.

It has been into the shop 7 times for this problem. They have reprogrammed the computer, replaced the fuel pump and the problem is still there. Chrylser said this is normal.
