2 Front Suspension Lower Ball Joint problem of the 2009 Jeep Patriot

Failure Date: 11/01/2018

Tire dealer indicates that front lower control arms need replacing due to worn ball joints. The vehicle has approximately 47000 miles and is driven for family pleasure only. This is premature wear. All four tires wore prematurely. (in fact, the ball joint issue was discovered when the vehicle was in for tire replacement. ) if the ball joints separate, control of the vehicle would likely be lost. The tire dealer recommended immediate replacement of the defective ball joints and to avoid driving the vehicle until repairs are made. There are many complaints on the internet about this (2007-2017) compass and Patriot models. This is a safety issue! Chrysler has issued a recall for defective lower ball joints on the 2004 Jeep liberty. The same should be done here before a fatality occurs.

3 Front Suspension Lower Ball Joint problem of the 2011 Jeep Patriot

Failure Date: 10/01/2015

I went to my dealership for an oil change and was told my front lower ball joints are bad and if not replaced I could not have my state inspection done. I only have 16, 499 miles on my Jeep. This makes no sense to me. I have read that the oem parts are all defective. I want Chrysler to help pay the costs. I was quoted around $675 with labor.

4 Front Suspension Lower Ball Joint problem of the 2008 Jeep Patriot

Failure Date: 05/01/2015

The subframe assembly on my 2008 Jeep Patriot has begun rusting out. The outer tie rod ends and lower ball joints are also worn. Similar issues have been addressed through a parts recall on the 2007 Jeep Patriot. This degradation of steering/suspension parts on a 2008 model warrant a recall similar to that of the 2007 model.

5 Front Suspension Lower Ball Joint problem of the 2011 Jeep Patriot

Failure Date: 10/13/2014

Took my car into mechanic for four new tires. At that time was told by them that lower ball joints showed signs of abnormal wear and tear. They recommended fixing. As I didn't have the time to get it into the shop at that point, I waited. Took car in for state mandated annual inspection and it failed - at 38000 miles. Not only that but car needed another new tire because ball joint had affected the new tires I just bought. Mechanic stated this shouldn't be happening in a car that's barely 4 years old. I do not do any off road driving - just normal about town and some minimal highway. I am the only owner - bought this car brand new. Seems like this is a defect that ought to be addressed. I see a lot of conversation on the web about this issue. Hope they decide to recall.

6 Front Suspension Lower Ball Joint problem of the 2010 Jeep Patriot

Failure Date: 05/23/2014

Went to go look for new tires and was told both lower ball joints were bad. Right side was worse and not to drive before getting it fixed; it was that bad. In my 45 years of driving I have never had ball joint go this early. Ball joints went out before my first set of tires. There has got to be a serious problem for this to happen. It seems I'm not the only Jeep owner with this problem.

7 Front Suspension Lower Ball Joint problem of the 2008 Jeep Patriot

Failure Date: 02/26/2013

I only have 46,000 miles on my 2008 Jeep Patriot and I already need both front lower ball joints replaced and the left and right tie rods. I have never done any type of off-roading in this vehicle, it's only been driven on the street. I'm am very unhappy with this, it's unacceptable to make something so cheap on a vehicle!.

8 Front Suspension Lower Ball Joint problem of the 2008 Jeep Patriot

Failure Date: 01/16/2013

Wife drives a 2008 Jeep Patriot that has 38,955 miles on it and when taken in for oil change and vehicle inspection was told that the left lower ball joint was in need of replacement. Cost would be close to $400. 00 to replace that component. Being frugal and wanting a second opinion we took the vehicle to another shop, reputable and very good, to have a look see. They confirmed that the ball joint was worn out and required replacement and was causing the alignment of the car to be out of specification. Upon further inspection they also found that the right rear tow link was completely rusted out and missing which caused that wheel to be out of alignment and was providing a significantly bad wear situation for the tires. Seems to us that after only driving this vehicle for less than 40,00 miles that these components should still be in working condition. After paying a little over $300. 00 for these parts to be replaced, I am writing this wanting to know how to recoup this money. Components that control the steering and suspension of a vehicle are vital to safe driving and if they fail catastrophic consequences may ensue. Chrysler Jeep should feel responsible and not wait on a catastrophe to occur before they do something to curb and reduce this danger.

9 Front Suspension Lower Ball Joint problem of the 2008 Jeep Patriot

Failure Date: 09/19/2012

Had vehicle in for oil change and was told be dealer that both lower ball joints and tie rod ends were "wore out" and would need to be replaced. Oh and the ball joints are "built in to the lower control arm, so both lower control arms need to be replaced" this is on a vehicle that has only 43,500 miles on it! how can this be! there should be a recall on this because it seems to me that this is happening to a huge number of Jeep Patriot owners and these part should last way longer then 43,000 miles. This is poor quality parts! the owners of these vehicles should not be expected to replace these major suspension part ever 40,000 to 45,000 miles! the cost of this is over $1,000. 00. This is a very dangerous issue and definitely makes the vehicle unsafe.

10 Front Suspension Lower Ball Joint problem of the 2008 Jeep Patriot

Failure Date: 08/04/2012

At 58,200 miles, all highway/city driving, the right front lower ball joint on the vehicle went bad. After consulting with multiple owners of the Patriot, it seems to be a widespread issue with the vehicle.

11 Front Suspension Lower Ball Joint problem of the 2007 Jeep Patriot

Failure Date: 06/12/2012

12 Front Suspension Lower Ball Joint problem of the 2008 Jeep Patriot

Failure Date: 06/01/2012

I purchased a used Jeep Patriot with 32,952 miles on it. Previous owner had been told to replace front lower ball joints. I was told the front wheels could fall off at any time. Dealership replaced them for me along with rotors. Original tires had to be replaced because of defective ball joints, but the new ones are already showing wear. The dealer & 2 other shops said with such low mileage it should not have this problem. After ball joints/rotors were replaced the problem was worse. Not only was a ball joint still bad but I was told that both control arms are bad and need replaced. Now, after being replaced once (now just over 33,400 miles on the Jeep) I am told it is not safe to drive over about 40mph because still a wheel could fall off.

Failure Date: 01/31/2012

The contact owns a 2008 Jeep Patriot the contact had taken the vehicle to an independent mechanic for inspection where they detected that the front passenger's side lower ball joint was faulty. The vehicle was then taken to another mechanic for a second opinion who informed the contact that the front passenger's side tie rod end and lower ball joint would need to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the problem. The approximate failure mileage was 37,053. Updated 03/14/lj.

14 Front Suspension Lower Ball Joint problem of the 2008 Jeep Patriot

Failure Date: 01/23/2012

When purchasing new tires for my 2008 Jeep Patriot limited awd, the shop found that the lower ball joints were worn out. The vehicle has only 30883 highway miles on it. The Jeep dealer states that this has been a common problem and the demand at this time for the lower control arms from Chrysler is 930 per week. Having grown up around a front end and alignment business, I find this to very very abnormal. Whether it is a design flaw or inferior parts, Chrysler corp needs to be held accountable for repairs to these vehicles. Suspension and steering are not where manufactures need to be cutting corners when building cars! I will be repairing my Jeep with the best parts available, and maybe the people at Jeep should consider doing the same when they build their products. I am not the only one having this problem, the internet is full of complaints, and let's hope a ball joint doesn't break and injure someone before they decide to address the problem. It took me years to get over the Chrysler corp junk of the 60's and 70's and I truly hope they are not reverting back to the past.

15 Front Suspension Lower Ball Joint problem of the 2008 Jeep Patriot

Failure Date: 12/03/2011

The contact owns a 2008 Jeep Patriot 4x4. While driving approximately 65 mph, the vehicle began to pull toward the right. Also, there was a loud clunking noise heard from outside of the vehicle. The contact was able to continue driving and the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who stated that both front lower ball joints were defective. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the repair was performed. The manufacturer was made aware of the problem. The approximate failure mileage was 41,000. Updated 01/13/lj.

16 Front Suspension Lower Ball Joint problem of the 2009 Jeep Patriot

Failure Date: 10/04/2011

At less than 370000 miles, (just out of warranty) I noticed a clunking and rattling noise from the front driver side of my 2009 Jeep Patriot. After a few days it spread to the passenger side front. When taking off or braking, especially around 5-10 mph, the clunking is really loud. I drove to Chrysler in wiesbaden, germany, and informed them that I believe it was a lower ball joint making the noise on both sides. Later they called me and said I was right, and they do not do ball joint repair, they replace the control arm. Makes sense, I am a mechanic, sae certified, working at a repair facility. The customer service manager also said I needed a cv boot on the passenger side. Cost of a control arm (part only-600 euro!!. Cost of a cv boot, just a piece of rubber, 201 euro. Parts only. Total cost with parts and labor would have been 1,060 euro, about 1200 us dollars for one side only. I did not allow them to rob me, so I ordered both sides, control arms, cv boots, inner and outer tie rods complete. I installed them with the help of my supervisor using manufacturer's data to torque all bolts and nuts. Parts used were Chrysler USA parts. The replacement parts started making the same noises the same day. Chrysler needs to recall these cars and manufacture a fitting part. The material is too cheap for such a heavy car. So, no warranty, no recall (nobody died yet!) and no cooperation from Chrysler.

19 Front Suspension Lower Ball Joint problem of the 2007 Jeep Patriot

Failure Date: 08/27/2011

I am from canada and own a 2007 Jeep Patriot 4x4. I only use my vehicle for highway driving and never take it off road. I only drive it with care. Recently, I brought my Jeep to a dealership because of a strange noise. Through a service, it was determined my lower ball joints were excessively worn to the point of being a safety hazard. They needed to be immediately replaced in addition to the control arms. This cost approximately $1000 cad. In reading over the internet, this seems to be a common manufacturing problem with issues across the board. There has never been a recall. There is no way the ball joints should be needing replacement in a vehicle that is only 3 years old with normal driving use. Had I not brought my vehicle in for a service, this would not have been discovered and would possibly have lead to a serious accident. Jeep needs to address this problem immediately before someone gets hurt.

Excessive wear in both the left and right lower control arms/ball joints was detected during routine maintenance of our 2007 Jeep Patriot. Due to their condition, it was not advisable to drive vehicle. Vehicle had 45,061 miles on it. Though this is a known issue with Jeep Patriots, Chrysler would not pay for repair since repair was not performed at dealer (it was not safe or feasible to get vehicle to dealer). After having this issue with the Patriot, I had my 2009 Jeep compass inspected. At 31,000 miles, signs of failure where found in the right lower ball joint. 28 Front Suspension Lower Ball Joint problem of the 2007 Jeep Patriot

Failure Date: 09/01/2010

Lower ball joints on 2007 Jeep Patriot shot at 45,000 miles. According to three mechanics who saw the problem, the problem is severe and I've been advised to either not drive the car or immediately repair the problem. Each mechanic said the ball joints should not go at 45,000 miles and noted several issues with Chrysler and failed ball joints. While on a lift, one mechanic showed me how my two front tires can simply be moved side to side. That should never happen I was informed. Very dangerous as it can cause the wheel to fly off the car. I've been hearing noise and feeling tire shakes for awhile now. Thought it was my brakes. . Which by the way also need replacing however I am being advised to spend my money first on the ball joints since it is an immediate major safety concern. Not feeling very safe, especially with my two children in the car!.

31 Front Suspension Lower Ball Joint problem of the 2007 Jeep Patriot

Failure Date: 08/25/2010

2007 Jeep Patriot fwd - during a routine oil change they stated that the lower ball joint was showing wear and would need replaced soon. Vehicle is only 3 years old, not taken "off roading" and only has 30,000 miles on it. I have searched and noted numerous others stating the same exact issues with the same exact model. Where is the recall??? of course the dealer says the vehicle is out of warranty by 3 months. You also can't just replace the ball joint you have to replace the control arm as its an assembly - and you have to replace both sides at the same time - holy money pit-!.

32 Front Suspension Lower Ball Joint problem of the 2010 Jeep Patriot

Failure Date: 08/24/2010

Went to get my annual oil change on my 2008 Jeep Patriot with only 42,000 miles on it. My mechanic called me at work and said my lower ball joint was about to fall out. Now the car is only 2 years old. I do alot of driving but no rough driving all highway driving. So I couldn't believe that ball joint would be bad after 42,000 miles. Now the bad part since it is out of warranty. I have to foot the bill for the replacement at over 450. 00. Don't think this is right but what you going to do.

33 Front Suspension Lower Ball Joint problem of the 2007 Jeep Patriot

Failure Date: 08/24/2010

Lower ball joints failed on 2007 Jeep Patriot with 38,000 miles.

34 Front Suspension Lower Ball Joint problem of the 2007 Jeep Patriot

Failure Date: 07/09/2010

Lower ball joint failure on both sides of my 2007 Jeep Patriot at 32k miles. . Only 6 weeks out of the 36 month warranty. It was not even safe to drive. Chrysler will do a good will assistance on this $1,200 repair by charging me only $250 since it was officially out of warranty. I had no choice as the car had to be repaired. But in my opinion, they are admitting an issue or they would have given me nothing. This is my second Jeep that has experienced ball joint failure a very early mileage. My other Jeep, a liberty, had a recall . Chrysler advises they do not have a recall on the Patriot for this issue. Someone should be looking at this problem. If the ball joints failed on the highway, a terrible accident would have occurred. It took them forever to acknowledge the liberty ball joint issue. Please investigate.

35 Front Suspension Lower Ball Joint problem of the 2007 Jeep Patriot

Failure Date: 04/24/2010

This vehicle is my daughters and when we took it in to have new tires installed they discovered the defects. In April 2010 my daughter complained of a clunking noise when she would hit a bump in the road. She called me and I assured her that it was safe to drive with only 35000 miles on the vehicle. During this same timeframe she took this Jeep in for a regular oil change and at billion motors in sioux falls,sd and they tell her she has a bad tie rod end. Again I assure her that with only 35000 miles it is okay to drive. I have been a mechanic for over 30 years, but I was wrong. When we took this "Jeep" in to new tires installed the technician informed us that the right front lower ball joint and the left front outer tie rod end were defective. We went to the tire shop and he showed me the defective parts, so I had new parts installed. At this time the vehicle was four years old or "new" and had 44,000 miles. If this vehicle had been abused maybe these parts would be bad, but it never leaves the highway. Maybe Jeep needs to install grease zerks in their parts. Ball joints useed to last 150,000 miles, these must be new and improved -huh!!! having bad ball joints and tie rod ends on a vehicle three years old is just wrong. How many of these parts have failed and caused accidents?.
