Jeep Patriot owners have reported 56 problems related to ball joint (under the suspension category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Mechanic inspected as part of potentially buying the vehicle. I had expressed concern over how it was driving. Ball joint is bad. I researched online and saw a lot of issues with this and was hoping that a safety recall was in place for it! (I did find a warranty extension for the subframe, and it is still good -- so it might be worth buying if safety issues are fixed. ).

Bad ball joints same as many others. Also bad sub frame. Took auto in for maintenance and was shown bad ball joints and a rusted out sub frame. These were issues and earlier Patriots but nothing has been done.
My front crossmember / sub frame is rotted out . Contacted Jeep they are aware of problem because they warranted 2007 models but not 2008 . Front engine cradle has huge holes in it . Design flaw cause the ac drips right on frame causing rust . Dealership said no setrvice bulletin issued but they lied . Finally got a good quote to have fixed gonna cost 775 to fix . I have also changed my front suspension components 3 times . Ball joints , tie rods etc and the other parts . Only saving grace is its paid for and lifetime power train warranty .

My 2011 Jeep Patriot was purchased new in mid November 2010. It has 42,972 miles on it. I had to replace the tires, one was worn clear down on the inside. The tire supplier said I needed an alignment. When I went in to get an alignment they were unable to do one because my ball joints needed replaced. I've owned this vehicle (my first & last Jeep) for 63 1/2 months and driven it less than 677 miles a month or less than 10 miles per day, I should not be replacing my ball joints with these low miles on my car! it is bad enough that I was told not to even drive my car until the parts come in which is going to be another 13 days! please tell me how this is normal wear & tear on a vehicle that has never been off road and has never had the 4 wheel drive engaged longer than to just pull out of slick spot? please make this right and recall the Jeeps that are having this issue!.

Took the vehicle into get a wobble in the front end checked. Was told by technician that the ball joints on both side are worn out. He said it was a very common problem due to poor quality components. From reading complaints, it seems to be a very common issue. It it's a safety hazard and should be addressed. I have contacted an attorney and will proceed.
I had a complete ball joint failure while driving on the highway. The failure resulted in my wheel separating from my car while driving in moderate traffic highway speeds (35 mph). Due to the failure and continued forward motion while driving, the entire front driver's side suspension had to be replaced.

Tl- the contact owns a 2009 Jeep Patriot. The contact stated that the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic to have the tires replaced when the mechanic discovered that both the lower front ball joints were faulty. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact was informed by the mechanic that the faulty ball joints had caused the tires to become damaged and worn. The manufacturer was notified. The VIN was not available. The failure mileage was 20,000. Jft.

While turning right and entering a highway using a 270 degree on ramp, the cars steering became unstable and suddenly tightened it's turning circle and lunged farther to the right. Inspection has revealed that the lower left ( drivers side ) has worn out after only 42,000 miles. A search online revealed that this is a common problem with the Jeep Patriot and compass and it is traceable to a bad batch of ball joints. Chrysler refuses to acknowledge the problem and cover it under warranty. . Read more...
I have had a terrible service experience. I had to wait over a month to get my 2013 Jeep in for warranty service. After another two week wait, I was told all was good and to pick up my vehicle. The maintenance department assured me that the vehicle was good to go repeatedly, even after I asked them multiple times because of prior bad service. The maintenance shop failed to reconnect my vehicles front right ball joint causing a catastrophic loss of control on the road after leaving the dealer. I skidded off the road, with one tire flopping around in the wheel well uncontrollably narrowly avoiding two other vehicles on my way off the road. Had this happed at a faster speed, there is a good chance the family and I could have been killed. This happened over two weeks ago and the dealership still has my vehicle. They have replaced some parts but have refused to replace damaged tires. One expects the highest of maintenance standards when taking a vehicle to a dealership, this dealership is failing horribly in maintenance standards and customer service.

Brought my vehicle for brakes and inspection and received a call from the garage saying I needed to replace all 4 ball joints. They said the left front one was extremely loose and barely hanging on. I researched the web and found many incidents of bad ball joints on this vehicle with an explanation from local dealer shops that there was a bad batch installed initially. The repairs cost me over $700 because the 3 year warranty had run out even though the mileage is still within range. Jeep knows its an issue and hasn't responded with a safety recall. Are they just waiting until an accident happens with death resulting before they act?.
Ball joints are worn and need replacement at approximately 35,000 miles. Vehicle has only been driven on highway and around town. No off-roading. Looking at Jeep Patriot forum on-line this appears to be pretty typical. Perhaps a recall should be done so that Jeep can put in parts that are durable and safe.
At 21,237 miles, front tie rods and ball joints had to be replaced for a total of $1500. At this amount of miles, this is completely unacceptable. After some internet research, I discovered that this is on ongoing problem in Jeep Patriots that has not been addressed by Chrysler. I was actually told that my car was unsafe to drive without these repairs, and I had been driving it regularly (without any symptoms of problems) and could have been killed in a fiery crash because of Chrysler's neglect.
Front ball joints have been replaced many times, but wear out repeatedly.
Tl- the contact owns a 2008 Jeep Patriot. The contact stated while driving at various speeds she heard a popping noise from the passenger side of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to a dealer for diagnosis and was informed that both bottom ball joints would need to be replaced. The manufacturer had not been notified. The vehicle had not been repaired. The failure and current mileage was 48,000. Dt.
The dealer has determined the left front ball joint has play in it and replacement is required.
With a low mileage of 37,325, both original front ball joints needed to be replaced. Majority of the accumulated mileage is highway driving and there is only one driver. After gradually noticing a rocky ride, I made a mechanic's appointment for a diagnosis of the problem. The experienced mechanics diagnosed the ball joint defect. The mechanic called the Jeep dealership to price Jeep parts and was told two complete arms would have to be purchased to complete the ball joint repair. The condition of the broken ball joints showed excessive play. This is my second Jeep vehicle; the first vehicle was a Jeep cherokee 4x4 that did not have this problem with low mileage.
Purchased this vehicle in may of 2012. Vehicle makes large rattling racket when going over any type of dirt road/brick road and a clunk when going over large bumps (speed bumps). Have taken to mechanic several times - turns out the large clunk was the ball joints. . . They were completely worn at 48000 miles which in turn changed the alignment of my wheels - as well as after driving it a mere 10000 miles made both front tires completely bald.
I have read many other people on here with the same issue and my mechanic said my model Jeep was known for this, but after hitting a curb my wheel and suspension parts holding it on let the front right tire, rim and all fall completely off. After getting it to the mechanic and having him putting it on the lift he told me I couldn't drive the car even after the front right was fixed b/c the car was a danger to myself and others. I was told the front ball joints which hold the suspension together and keep the wheels on the tires were completely worn out and the tires could fall off at any moment. He told me he had this issue many times with my model car and didn't understand it. I bought the car used a year and half ago with 45,000 miles or so. Once the mechanic did change the ball joints, he told me something even worse. . . He could tell since they were not factory ball joints, that they had already been replaced by the previous owner. Therefore, the factory set needed to be replaced sometime before I bought the car, and a year or so after the replacement ball joints (the parts that hold you tires on so they don't fall off driving 60 mph down the highway and kill you and others) were put on, a new replacement set had to be added. This is a serious and scary issue that needs to be addressed!.
The contact owns a 2007 Jeep Patriot. The contact stated the ball joints failed and the front wheels started shaking due to the failure. When the vehicle was placed on a lift to be inspected the ball joints on the front passenger side fell off. The contact was concerned about the safety issue. The current mileage and failure mileage was 68,716.
The contact owns a 2010 Jeep Patriot. The contact stated the vehicle was being serviced for an oil change when they stated the front balls joints on both wheels were loose. The ball joints were not leaking any fluid. The contact stated the failure was a manufacturer's defect. The failure and current mileage was 9,700.
We have had out Jeep for 3 years took it to the shop to get a tire fixed. . . And they let us know that the tie rods and ball joints were bad. That is also the reason out new tires are wearing out fast. This seems to be a problem with this model Jeep.
Ball joint repair at 40k? I just turned the 40k mark on my Jeep Patriot 2008 when last week I began to hear a noise in the front passenger side. It was worse with the a/c so I thought that was the problem. Upon oil change, my mechanic told me it's the ball joints that needed to be replaced. I have no wobbling of my steering, but he states it is a dangerous situation. Now I read that it's a 3 yr 36,000 mile warrantee so I fall outside of that. Bad Jeep, bad! I have had more bad luck with this vehicle than my commander which I loved. Fix this issue!.
On 08/12/2011 my wife was driving from CT to mass on the highway to pick up our 3 year old daughter at her mothers, when suddenly the Jeep started to shake. On 08/13/2011 brought car to mechanic and he said ball joints had to be replaced immediately, and the car was unsafe to drive. He said she was lucky the wheels didn't fall off. 08/13/2011 called dealership, branhaven in branford, CT and found a recall but it's VIN number specific, and does not match our Jeep. Dealer suggested call Chrysler direct for assistance. . . Chrysler said the car needs to go to dearship to be diagnosed. Now will cost more money that we don't have. This seems to be a typical problem with 07 Jeep Patriots, the car is 4 years old with less than 60k miles. . This is not an off road vehicle. This type of problem needs to be addressed by Chrysler immediately. Fortunately no one has been hurt.
Ball joints needed replacement at 70,000 miles.
Due to the design of the ball joints where there is no grease fitting the ball joints failed and caused massive misalignment. This also cause tires to go flat due to uneven wear and ruined the front suspension of the vehicle.
Severe ratting in the front end of my 2008 Jeep Patriot. I took it to a garage to have it looked at and they said the ball joints were bad the vehicle has 66000 miles. After reserching it online and over a 500 complaints in chat forms for the same thing I found that Chrysler had a rrt 08-070 for improper torque on the lower a arm bolt. I further reserched it and found that this bolt is an mvss bolt that was incorrectly torqued. I called the dealership to confirm the rrt and the said my VIN was not included. I called Chrysler and got the runaround that the vehicle milage could of been the issue. There were many posts on Jeep Patriot. Com stating they had the same problems on the same year and make models. One post stated they pulled out of the dealrship after the vehicle was repaired and the front tire fell off. My wife and grandson do alot of traveling in the vehicle and I would hate for them to be traveling and hit a pot hole and the bolt shear off because of chryslers not wanting to make a recall on the vehicle. I worked 14 years as a quality engineer in the automovtive business for a teir 2 supplier and Chrysler would have no problem on making a recall on a part that was produced by our company and make us pay for it. I think there should be a recall on this issue because of the safety issue at hand with the front wheel assembly a arm bolt breaking and the assembly falling off.
Tl-the contact owns a 2007 Jeep Patriot 4x4. The contact stated while driving 35 mph there was a noise coming from his vehicle. The vehicle was then taken to a mechanic shop for inspection. After inspection they notice the tie rods loose which causes the ball joints to be loose also on the wheels. The mechanic repaired the tie rod but not the ball joints. The dealer was not contacted. The manufacturer was contacted and offered no assistance. The failure mileage was 43,000. Mw.
2007 Jeep Patriot, new tie rods at 24000 miles, had to change all of the disc brakes due to rust and cracking at 48000 miles, told by our mechanic that it was unsafe to drive. At our last vehicle inspection on 07-01-2011 we were told that it needs new ball joints since they were cracking, the car has less that 60,000 miles.
The contact owns a 2007 Jeep Patriot 4x4. While driving approximately 15 mph the contact heard a loud clanking sound and felt the vehicle shake. The contact was able to continue driving after pulling over to the side of the road briefly. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who replaced the front driver and passenger side ball joints, tie rod and steering control assembly. The approximate failure mileage was 42,300.
Tl-the contact owns a 2008 Jeep Patriot. The contact stated the front suspension ball joints fail. While driving 65 mph the front of the vehicle started shaking, wobbling and pulling to the side. The vehicle was driven to the dealer who replaced both ball joints and ar arms under the warranty. The vehicle front suspension continued to wobble after the dealer replaced them within two weeks. The vehicle was taken back at the dealer for inspection and more repairs. The manufacturer was not contacted. The VIN was unknown. The failure mileage was 35,925 and the current mileage was 36,210. . . . Mw.
Both front ball joints bad at approx. 50,000 never taken off road and its my wifes who never goes over the speed limit just goes to work and grocery. Going to be about $1200 to fix and said my vechicle is 2 months from date of free replacement through recall.
I am the original owner of a 2008 Patriot purchased 03-10-08. While on the highway,I heard noises from the front end of my car. Then I had a caliper lock up on my back brake and I took it in to the nearest mechanic. When the mechanic checked out the car they called the car dealer because I only had 29,133 miles on the car and my outside front contr arm ball joints where worn out. The mechanic said this is abnormal and with such low mileage and should be covered by the dealer. The dealer said I was not covered under the warrantee of 3 years 36,000 miles. The date of this repair was 4-23-11. A little over 1 month out of warrantee. Three weeks later the tie rod went bad while I was on a trip. The cost of these two problems was over $1,000 in repairs that should not have worn out with only 29,000 miles (this does not include 2 tires I had to replace and other repairs). These parts had to have been bad for a while before I became aware of the serious danger of driving with bad ball joints and tie rod.
Had 2007 Jeep Patriot 4x4 with 59,000 miles in for 4 new brakes. Was told ball joints are also bad and need to be replaced immediately to avoid a catastrophic accident. Over $1300 total repair. Also recently replaced all 4 tires. This is a known problem that could easily prove fatal and should be recalled immediately.
I took my Jeep Patriot in for a possible alignment issue to find that front ball joints needed to be replaced and my tires were worn down to the wire. These tires were not even a year old and back tires still look brand new. The tire shop said that this was incredibly unsafe and suggested it to be towed. The dealership acknowledged this to be a common problem for the Jeep, but a non dealership mechanic told us this is not something that should happen to a vehicle only 4 years old with 65,000 miles. It angers me that there is not a recall because if I would have lost a tire the wreck could be deadly. This is a common Jeep problem found on almost all Jeep forums online.
This is a safety issued with the 2008 Jeep Patriot. These vehicles have a problem with ball joints and arms breaking. Was told by the mechanic that this is a common defect with this auto and is a very dangerous problem. When I looked into it online I found many blogs regarding the 2008 Jeep Patriot with this problem. I think Jeep needs to step up and correct this problem. I've never had to put money into a 4 year old car.
