3 Power Train problem of the 2009 Jeep Patriot

Failure Date: 02/06/2025

I am submitting this complaint regarding the cvt (continuously variable transmission) failure in our Jeep vehicle. We have experienced intermittent transmission issues throughout our entire period of ownership. The cvt has now completely failed—the vehicle will not shift out of low gear. The rpms surge rapidly, and although the vehicle will move at very low speeds if you ease off the accelerator, it will not reach normal driving speeds, making it unsafe and unusable for daily travel. The check engine light is on, and diagnostic codes confirm a cvt-related issue. The vehicle originally came with a lifetime powertrain warranty. We complied with the required inspection and maintenance schedule, except for the most recent inspection, which we missed due to a personal hardship. Jeep initially sent reminders for these inspections but eventually stopped, and we received no notice of the upcoming deadline. The vehicle has been regularly maintained by a trusted local repair shop. Despite this, it is now undriveable. From both our personal experience and broader consumer reports, it’s clear that these types of cvt failures are common among Jeep vehicles. Jeep has refused to honor the warranty, stating it could only be reinstated if we paid for the repairs ourselves within a specific timeframe—which has now passed. This policy places an unreasonable burden on the consumer, especially for a known and recurring mechanical issue. We believe Jeep is failing to take responsibility for a serious safety and performance defect. I respectfully ask the NHTSA to investigate this matter further and evaluate whether broader action—such as a recall—is warranted.

6 Power Train problem of the 2015 Jeep Patriot

Failure Date: 07/19/2024

I bought my 2015 Jeep Patriot new as I was getting older & I said this is the last vehicle I will buy. I am nearing 80 years old now & today I took it about 35 miles from home & on way back it jerked so hard I didn't think I was gonna make it home. I was going 65 mph but even slowing down to 45-50 it still jerked bad! there was no lights on the dash come on. Was very scary. I have babied my car took excellent care of it & have 45,000 miles on it. I do not have money to have transmission replaced & that's what I'm reading on computer. I have so many medical bills I can't afford nothing right now. Did I miss a recall or have there been problems with these cars transmissions? can you help me know what it could be? the car dealer wants $139 an hour to check it out & I'm worried sick.

7 Power Train problem of the 2011 Jeep Patriot

Failure Date: 06/25/2024

The component that failed was the front, driver's side subframe. This component and the vehicle is available for inspection upon request. The sudden and unexpected failure of the subframe on the vehicle, due to excessive rust corrosion, precipitated a series of hazardous events that significantly compromised not only my own safety but also the safety of others on the road. While driving at a low speed, the detachment of the wheel hub and cv axle joint led to a complete loss of vehicle control. This mechanical failure was further exacerbated by the total loss of transmission fluid, which leaked onto the road, potentially creating a slippery and dangerous surface for other road users. The culmination of these mechanical failures resulted in having been stranded in the middle of a busy intersection, a location where a major freeway on and off ramp intersect with a significant artery of traffic. This situation placed myself in immediate danger, exposed to the risk of collision from oncoming traffic. Moreover, the unexpected presence of my immobilized vehicle in the intersection also posed a significant risk to other drivers, who may have had to make sudden maneuvers to avoid a collision. This could have led to secondary accidents, endangering even more road users. The problem was confirmed by an independent insurance agent, and therefore, the vehicle and failed subframe were inspected by insurance representatives. There were no warning lamps or messages from the electronic vehicle information center, nor were other symptoms of the problem apparent immediately prior to the failure.

9 Power Train problem of the 2015 Jeep Patriot

Failure Date: 06/15/2024

My car has caught on fire with smoke at least 4 times, 3 times with my minor child inside of it. I have video to show you just how dangerous it is. All components of the vehicle have failed. I have put thousands of dollars into the vehicle and it only has 80,000 miles on it. My safety and my son and elderly mother's safety has been at extreme risk and my car is not safe to own or drive. Carl gregory, the dealer, never informed me ever of a 2015 Jeep Patriot recall only three months after I purchased the vehicle while pregnant. The vehicle has been inspected/ worked on by carl gregory and now southern motors Jeep several times over the last 8 years located on middleground road at the corner of abercorn street in savannah, georgia. My insurance company has charged me to tow my vehicle at least six times as my son and I have been stranded all over the city waiting hours for a tow truck. There were no warning lamps on the vehicle prior to it catching fire and I have my car tuned regularly at wal-mart automotive and cleaned at montgomery cross roads car wash once a month. Today the engine stalled and I barely made it out of of the street which is highly dangerous for pedestrians and other drivers on the road. This is probably the 3rd time it has done that. The steering wheel stalls leaving me at the whim of an open road as my car goes out of control. The radio's electrical unit shut down two years ago and the back door does not open. I can't afford to fix those. The brakes were replaced approximately two years after owning it as the vehicle would not slow down during a red light (at the cost of $2,000). I had to veer right. Last November, the car was worked on and the clutch was replaced because it stopped working. One month ago we paid $600 for a new power steering hose to be replaced as it apparently was and continues to leak fluid. This has now been indicated on the dashboard as "hot oil". Currently, I love my car but my family and I are petrified and traumatized.

10 Power Train problem of the 2016 Jeep Patriot

Failure Date: 05/31/2024

Last night was the 3rd time my family's safety was threatened by a malfunction in my 2016 Jeep Patriot (manual). When driving, the car started to stall out as if I'm changing gears badly, but wasn't doing so. Next, it stalled completely without any dashlight notices. I was forced to pop it out of gear to give some control to the steering (something I learned after the 1st time it happened). Then, I coasted to the side of the road while maneuvering moving traffic! the 1st 2 times this happened I was in local traffic and it almost caused an accident. Last night, I was in the center of i95 with rushing traffic. Terrifying! each time the car has had to be towed and the crankshaft sensor has been the culprit. It is in the shop today (June 1, 2024) and that's the problem again! the dealership says the recall on Jeep Patriot crankshaft is not for my vehicle. Please help.

11 Power Train problem of the 2017 Jeep Patriot

Failure Date: 05/08/2024

Was driving on highway about 70 mph and check engine light, red lightning bolt symbol, and traction control lights all came on wasn't able to accelerate and vehicle wouldn't go above 30 mph. Additionally, several unknown warning lights and the abs warning light was illuminated. The contact stated that the failure had occurred a year prior. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed with a front wheel bearing failure and the front wheel bearing was replaced. The failure reoccurred. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or the dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The contact was advised to take the vehicle to the dealer to be diagnosed. The failure mileage was approximately 76,140.

13 Power Train problem of the 2014 Jeep Patriot

Failure Date: 04/01/2024

When I pull up somewhere and apply brakes it will start jerking and act like it wants to go but if I put the Jeep in park or neutral it stops. It's like the whole Jeep will lunge forward when I am sitting there with my foot on the brake and it just feels like it's going to take off or die. It can't make up its mind.

16 Power Train problem of the 2015 Jeep Patriot

Failure Date: 01/02/2024

Urgent safety complaint: sudden loss of power in 2015 Jeep Patriot on interstate I am writing to formally report a critical safety issue I experienced with my 2015 Jeep Patriot on multiple occasions. While driving on the interstate at approximately 70mph, my vehicle unexpectedly lost power, causing an immediate drop in speed. This incident occurred under normal driving conditions with no prior warning signs or dashboard alerts. The sudden loss of power in a high-speed lane posed a severe risk not only to my safety but also to other motorists, as it could have led to a multi-vehicle collision. Fortunately, I was able to maneuver the vehicle to the shoulder without incident, but the potential for a more severe outcome was distressingly high. I am extremely concerned about the reliability and safety of the 2015 Jeep Patriot. I urge a thorough investigation into this matter to identify and rectify any underlying mechanical or electrical issues that could lead to such a dangerous situation. It is crucial to address this problem promptly to prevent potential accidents and ensure the safety of all drivers. Researching this issue online has shown that this is a common issue among many Jeep Patriots. I am willing to provide further details or assistance as needed for your investigation. Thank you for your prompt attention to this serious safety concern. Sincerely, kelvin oxendine.

17 Power Train problem of the 2016 Jeep Patriot

Failure Date: 12/29/2023

From the day I purchased the vehicle on December 29 of 2023. I immediately heard a rattling noise coming from the rear end of the vehicle. I also noticed that the transmission had been catching or slipping or missing whenever it transfers gears it is getting worse by the day I have taken it to the original dealership at mnf auto sales in albuquerque and I have also taken it to the larry miller Jeep in albuquerque new mexico. They claim that the only thing wrong with the vehicle is the motor mounts after I left with my vehicle from being repaired, it continues to happen, and the transmission is getting worse day by day , I am afraid if I keep driving it much longer that it may cause an accident or damage the vehicle severely. I am trying to work with the dealership and they are telling me that multiple people have looked at it and that there’s nothing wrong with it however, that is false information , my vehicle has been in the service department for over 10 days at two different locations and basically the main dealership where I bought it from is telling me that they do not want to look at it and that it’s the type of transmission I have and there’s nothing wrong.

18 Power Train problem of the 2014 Jeep Patriot

Failure Date: 12/20/2023

Engine jerking really had while vehicle is in drive and idle hard while sitting still.

However, the failure became a regular failure. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who determined that the cvt oil was low. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure reoccurred. The vehicle was taken back to an independent mechanic, who was unable to determine the cause of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 80,000.

22 Power Train problem of the 2015 Jeep Patriot

Failure Date: 09/02/2023

I nearly died this time. The crankshaft sensor was replaced like advised and the engine stalled turning left in an intersection. Official complaint #2. Thankfully no one was behind me. See previous complaint for more details.

23 Power Train problem of the 2016 Jeep Patriot

Failure Date: 08/01/2023

Problems started when the wheel and axel came off the vehicle on a side road 3 years ago. The vehicle dropped a wheel again when crossing the country a month later. Both incidents included my wife and passengers. That at least seems resolved. At 28900 miles or so we have been wrestling for the last year and some with intermittently all the warning lights coming on and now the car will occasionally lose all power while in motion. So we have taken it to the dealership where they say it requires a replacement of the electrical harness. Topping off, the driver seat rest safety mechanism deployed randomly this last week while the vehicle was parked in the driveway.

24 Power Train problem of the 2015 Jeep Patriot

Failure Date: 07/12/2023

For the last 3-4 months my Jeep has been going into limp mode while in motion, sometimes at high speeds. There seems to be no pattern anymore and I’ve replaced the parts mechanics have suggested.

25 Power Train problem of the 2011 Jeep Patriot

Failure Date: 07/06/2023

Vehicle has a bad wheel bearing. While replacing wheel bearing noticed that the rear subframe was completely rotted/rusted. The corrosion on the rear subframe is far worse than the rest of the vehicle. This vehicle is unsafe to drive in its current state as the crossmember could collapse causing a loss of control of the vehicle. Upon doing some research it is clear that Chrysler knows that this is a issue. I cannot believe that there hasn't been a recall to replace these subframes. I guess its going to take a major accident or worse to before anything will get done. I have included pictures of the crossmember as well as the undercarriage of the vehicle for comparison.

26 Power Train problem of the 2017 Jeep Patriot

Failure Date: 06/30/2023

When starting out from home the other day and several other occasions, the transmission has been jerking while shifting gears, its automatic and has around 43000 miles on it, have owned it for two years bought it from car dealer with extended warranty. Have not been able to get it checked yet but wil soon. The transmission has been shifting weird for some time now, it really whines when climbing hills, or traveling on the highways. It shifts gears when going slightly uphill and the engine revs up to 3000 rpms until car levels off or starts downgrade before shifting back to overdrive. Also has leak from sunroof after it rains and it leaks down thru interior lights onto radio.

27 Power Train problem of the 2015 Jeep Patriot

Failure Date: 06/01/2023

Key takeaways from the information you’ve provided: 1. Your engine’s rpm drops to zero randomly while driving and idling. 2. The engine loses power, accompanied by the traction control light flashing. 3. Power steering is lost within 10 seconds after the power loss. 4. Transmission range sensor (nss) was replaced, but there might be an adjustment issue. 5. Shifting from reverse to neutral is difficult, while shifting from drive to neutral is fine. 6. Taillights don’t change during difficulty shifting down from reverse. 7. A code reader showed an abs code: c1221 after the nss replacement. 8. The negative terminal clamp may need replacement. 9. Engine issues might be related to temperature or transmission shifts.

28 Power Train problem of the 2010 Jeep Patriot

Failure Date: 05/01/2023

I was on the freeway going about 75mph when all of a sudden it lost acceleration I couldn't get it to go more to 35 or 40 mph in and gear. Pulled to the side and let it sit for like 15 mins and it started up normal drove fine for a little bit. Then I went the back way home and didn't go over 50mph and it was fine got home and parked. Next morning went to leave and like 5 miles down the road only doing like 40 mind you. It completely goes out no acceleration just revs. Towed it home now it still starts and goes into gear but won't move just acts like its still in park.

29 Power Train problem of the 2016 Jeep Patriot

Failure Date: 04/14/2023

I kept getting a check engine light on my dash even after taking it in for oil changes in the past year on and off and none of them caught what seemed to be the main issue. The check engine light would disappear once I got the oil change. I assumed everything was fine around April 2023, until December 2023 and apparently my check engine light turned back on. Finally after going to at least 4 more different auto shops I took it by autozone to look at it again. Autozone claimed my code meant that my catalytic converter needed to be looked at or replaced. Now I never got a recall for it, but I did see that there has been several issues across the board about Patriot owners needing theirs to be replaced. That’s costly and it should’ve been replaced free of charge. My vehicle has been in optimal before this and I do keep up proper maintenance on my vehicle.

30 Power Train problem of the 2016 Jeep Patriot

Failure Date: 03/15/2023

My 2016 Jeep Patriot 4x4 engine light is staying on. When I took it to a mechanic to have it read it stats faulty cramshaft and camshaft position sensors. My engine has stalled, loss of acceleration and power, shuddering, and jerking that is continuously happens. Jeep manufactures said its not there problem. I need help with my vehicle, not just for my safety but for the safety of my kids. Also the problem is only getting worse.

31 Power Train problem of the 2015 Jeep Patriot

Failure Date: 01/27/2023

On 5 occasions at various speeds and types of roads, my vehicle suddenly goes into limp mode, the engine shuts off and power steering goes out. I have very limited time and control to move off the road before the car behind me slams into me. The majority of the instances this has happened, the orange anti-skid light comes on though road conditions were fine. I found a recall of 2016 Jeep Patriots (s89/NHTSA 16-v-907 crankshaft/camshaft sensor wire harness) and many complaints I've found experiencing the same thing I experienced were included in this recall. Mechanic ran my Jeep's code and it showed a number of things were triggered but he couldn't pinpoint what exactly could be the cause based on the code errors. I have a young child in a car seat in the back of my car and feel extremely unsafe taking her anywhere, let alone when it's just me in the car. Please consider adding the 2015 Patriot to this recall.

32 Power Train problem of the 2017 Jeep Patriot

Failure Date: 01/23/2023

There was suddenly a strange growling humming noise coming from the engine. The car only had 53,641 miles on it. It cost $2300 to replace 2 bearing imput shafts. We had the dealer fix it. When we called about the problem they knew what it was right away because it is a common problem. This is unacceptable. We now lost confidence in Jeep products and feel something should be done about it.

33 Power Train problem of the 2016 Jeep Patriot

Failure Date: 11/30/2022

Sitting at a red light with foot on brake and auto “jumped” happened quickly do not know if any warning lights were on. It seams to now be not not shifting property resulting in a lag in power.

34 Power Train problem of the 2009 Jeep Patriot

Failure Date: 11/25/2022

Vehicle's cvt transmission will overheat and cause the speed of the vehicle to slow down, unable to speed back up, and the acceleration to be extremely slow, if at all. This can cause the vehicle to decelerate rapidly, and unexpectedly on the highway (or generally any speed, for that matter) which can cause an accident at high speeds, all in which the driver had no control over how the vehicle behaved due to the transmission behaving erratically on it's own. I have researched and down that this is a common issue that Jeep/Chrysler knew of, and 1000's of Jeep Patriot owners/owners of vehicles with cvt transmissions have experienced.

35 Power Train problem of the 2009 Jeep Patriot

Failure Date: 11/15/2022

I report reveral times issuess with my gear box, but each time they said the car is fine. The problems start after the car was serviced years ago to Jeep desources rep (3400 sources blvd, dollard-des-ormeaux qc h9b 1z9, canada) but the issues become worst in time. It started to not be able to drive in authomatic mode but ok in manual and they told me that forgot to tide a transmition cable and now when I am reporting the issue, I cannot drive and any mode (authomatic or manual) and base on service department, nothing is wrong with the car. What they are waiting, to have an accident or die? since I bought the car, all the maintenace of it was not as supposed as per maintenance manual of the car – to give an example, oil change it’s come on after 3000km no matter where I drive (city or highway) and the blain me for driving the car. With all respect, every time I made compline I felt no one offer me the correct attention and the issue with the gear box for me is abouve the accepted limit.
