Jeep Patriot owners have reported 10 problems related to transmission gear slipping (under the power train category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
When you accelerate the transmission slips. It doesn't do it all the time but at least 50-60% of the time. It started under the warranty and I had a Dodge dealership look at it and they said they felt it slip but the road was wet so they couldn't say if it was the tranny or the tires slipping on the wet pavement. It has been slipping for the last year at least. After talking to other people who have these Patriots they said the same thing (transmission slipping). It does it during acceleration.

Transmission shutters and slips between 55 and 70mph. Feels like car is going to stall out, and does not accelerate correctly.

Tire pressure sensor light has been on since car was bought new, had it checked by dealer and they said it would go off after driven a few miles. Engine light came on around 50k miles and before I could get it checked it went off. I was told the only way the computer could detect the problem was if the light was on. It has came on and gone back off several times. Now it has came on at 90k miles and the I had it checked and was told I had a bad crankshaft sensor and a bad camshaft sensor. Now the transmission has started slipping at 90k miles. I'm also on my 3rd set of tires on the front because the front end will not stay aligned.

There have been numerous complaints of early transmission failure, even with with normal servicing. Issues start with a whining noise, overheat warnings, and an inability to accelerate. The most common solution is replacement of the transmission. Late 2014 model year Patriots changed to a non-cvt transmission. After replacing original cvt transmission for $2,500 it failed again within 6 months. The Jeep is undrive-able. There should be a recall on the cvt transmission. My Jeep is undrive-able and still owe $5900 while it sits in the driveway!! transmission slips while driving and Jeep stalls making it extremely dangerous to drive. Internet forums have countless compalints about these cvt transmissions with same symptoms!!.
Takata recall there is a clunking noise in the front end while driving over bumps and the transmission is slipping while accelerating from a stop is when I notice it the mostly.
Transmission starts making whinning noise, transmission starts to slip, then the transmission overheats while driving down the interstate at 75 mph, it has also happened in town. The dealership can see that the fault is displayed, yet they cannot seem to find anything wrong.

I purchased this vehicle in 2014 from thoroughbred Nissan in tucson, az a few months after purchase the transmission was replaced under warranty. Now three years later the transmission is again slipping and has already caused stalls on the highway. One of the times the Jeep stalled just as I switched lanes in front of a semi on an interstate highway ,I was barely able to pull the car over and out of the path of the truck right before the car completely shut off. I have taken the vehicle to a dealer in California where I now reside and they have informed me I have to replace the transmission and there is no longer no warranty. I have also taken the Jeep to two other places that specialize on transmission and they have both informed me that the transmission utilized in this type of Jeep has many problems and that they would recommend I buy a new car all together as I am likely to experience similar problems in about 2-3 years if I choose to have the transmission replaced, even if I continue to maintain it properly as I have been. This Jeep is only 7 years old and is already in need of it's third transmission. I have researched complaints on this vehicle and transmission failure seems to be common in these type of cars. It is extremely dangerous to keep allowing these cars to operate with the current faulty transmissions especially because they start to stall with no warning. I had an extremely close call and would hate for anyone to stall out without notice going full speed on a highway. My car stalled many times before any light came on, and dealers aren't even willing to replace a transmission with such light. Please I urge you to review this problem and find a solution. This problem first surfaced in the fall of 2016 and the problem continues. I rarely drive this car due to this. I have researched options and feel the manufacturer should take responsibility.

Transmission overheats without warning until it already has happened. Transmission slips and makes noise. Because there are no codes dealers cannot properly diagnose this issue. . While on the freeway car will overheat and completely shut down leaving ypu at risk of possible collisions. Always told it needs a transmission flush. These flushes are already expensive but do not fix the problem on hot days (I live in arizona) its more susceptible to overheating and shutting.
The cvt transmission for this vehicle was not designed to drive such a heavy car. As a result the transmission began slipping at 35,000 miles. This is a major safety issue in that pulling into or crossing traffic is dangerous when power can't be transferred predictably to the wheels. I'm not sure of the amount of complaints about this issue, however, doing cursory search will find many instances of these transmissions slipping, overheating and failing well within the service life of the oil (100,000 miles). There are probably many other Chrysler products that have this small car transmission placed in an SUV and not suitable for weight and vehicle load. Although no accident has happen as a result there have been many close calls, and I'm sure that there are others that have experienced the same. Thanks for your consideration of this issue.
