Jeep Patriot owners have reported 29 problems related to transmission noise (under the power train category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
My 2015 Jeep Patriot started making whining noises and jerking when in motion, I had the transmission and converter replaced at 75,000 miles, now I am at 95,000, and it is happening all over again, loud whining noises and jerks randomly when in motion, does not matter the speed or if I am on a city street going 40 miles an hour or highway going 70 miles an hour or even in a neighborhood going 10 miles an hour, I also have noticed the car does not accelerate properly, I currently have my car in the shop to diagnosis the problems again.

I was driving approx 45 mph when I heard a popping noise followed by grinding noise while in 5th gear. Took my car to the shop and was told it looked like the transmission. I then took it to a transmission shop who verified that the transmission was shot. It was cracked in several places. I had the transmission replaced with a new one. When I went to pick up my car, I asked to take pictures so that I could talk to Jeep about having a transmission fail at 103k miles. While taking pictures and looking at the damaged transmission, the mechanic said " wait a minute. What year is your Jeep?" I told him it was a 2014. He said, "look at this sticker. It means that this transmission was manufactured in 2016. So, you are actually on your 3rd transmission. " I was able to track the transmission by the part number and found out that it was installed in July 2016. The original transmission failed at 51,477 miles. The one that just came out failed at 52, 075 miles.

While driving 75 mph, the transmission starts making a whining noise, and the transmission warning indicator illuminates, the vehicle decelerates and loses power. We coast the vehicle over to the road shoulder, wait awhile and the warning light goes off. This happened four times in succession on our last trip of 240 miles. It has happened at the very least 10 times on the same trip to west virginia. The vehicle was taken to johnson family Chrysler Dodge Jeep ram, floyd, virginia, also motor mile Chrysler Dodge Jeep ram christiansburg, virginia, and miller's Chrysler Dodge Jeep ram martinsburg, west virginia. As of October 31st 2019 johnson family has not been able to replicate the problem. They have had the car for 27 days! VIN #ic4njrbb2hd107366 with approximately 24,000 miles. While driving on a highway I noticed a whining noise and losing power going up a hill I was able to get home and to my mechanic. After checking the transmission he found metal filings in it and said I needed a new transmission. I was very disappointed in hearing this as the Jeep only has about 68000 miles on it. I contacted the Jeep dealer in scranton PA and was told that the vehicle was out of warranty. I contacted different transmission garages and was quoted prices from over $3000 to $6000. Reading about other peoples problems with Jeep vehicles this seems like a big ongoing problem with Jeep transmissions. I hope your agency can help us out so we can get some satisfaction from Jeep.

Car makes a whining noise once it's been driving for a little bit. It is in sync when you accelerate (whines up when pushing gas, whines down when you let go). It hesitates to accelerate which is extremely dangerous on the freeway. On multiple occasions I've been driving down the road and the transmission light comes on, the whining noise continues and the car will just slow down and eventually stop. I've had to cross multiple lanes on the freeway to try and get over to the shoulder so I didn't break down and get hit right away. When starting the car starts extremely rough and is very shaky. Dealerships have told me the only way to fix it is to replace the transmission which will cost over $4,000. There are plenty of websites that people are complaining of the exact same issue. It is a common issue across the board with Patriots. These need to be recalled, people are spending thousands getting their transmissions replaced because they are breaking down on the highway and causing accidents and injuries.
I was driving and heard a noise I took my vehicle to the dealership they serviced it and three days later the noise came back a whining noise. All of a sudden it didn't want to move forward the whining increased, then the overheated warning light came on, then inability to accelerate. Finally the transmission light came on. I took it back to the dealership they called the warranty people and I was told because I didn't do every maintenance suggestions they will not honor the lifetime warranty on the part. This happened with no prior warning from the service of the vehicle or performance of the vehicle. I feel this warranty situation is a scam and they should be held liable!.
Driving along and lose of power in the transmission. Got it parked and now it wont go. Didnt have a loud noise or any warning. It just wouldnt go.

I was stopped at a stoplight turning right the light turned green I went to go and my Jeep Patriot started hesitating in the middle of the intersection and it took a few minutes to get up to speed I have had the problem multiple times but the dealership couldn't recreate the problem so they couldn't tell me a salutation brought it in 3 times now when I go to speed up to flow of traffic coming off the on ramp my transmission makes a howling noise and it is slow to get up to speed.
First time 09/2013 I was driving on the highway at 75 mph from colorado towards arizona when from one second to the other vehicle force drop speed to 30 mph and a temperature light came on on dash, putting my family at danger since I had to swerve as fast as I could to the shoulder because semi was going as fast as me. When I came to a complete stop there was no power and a whining noise coming from under hood. I turned vehicle off and back on and light came off and power was restored but as soon as the tachometer reach 3000 rpm temp light back on and loss of power came back. I turn off vehicle once again and returned to colorado springs straight to dealership and was diagnosed with transmission internal failure 3 years after I purchase brand new at 73,687 miles on odometer. Power train warranty cover the cvt replacement and found out that 100's of Patriots have the same issue. Fast forward 3 years later 2/2017 whining noise came back light came back but no warranty and unfortunately dealer estimates $6000. 00 replacement bill. After much research jetco cvt's are the problem and after many complains Patriots no longer with cvt's but I'm stuck with a non working worthless vehicle in my dry way.
I own a 2011 Jeep Patriot and the transmission has already gone out! it happened immediately. No warning, nothing. I was driving on the freeway and heard a loud winding noise. I could not accelerate at all. I pulled off the freeway and turned the car off. When I turned the car back on I was able to accelerate, but for only a mile or so. Then no acceleration and I could not reverse. The car has 160k miles.
The transmission overheats and looses power. It will make a high pitched whining noise and then the overheating light comes on and the vehicle looses power. Very scary in 4 lanes of traffic. Has happened at least 20 times since June 2015 when I purchased the vehicle. Has been to two different Jeep dealerships that can find nothing wrong with it.
This is the 4th time that my Jeep that was purchased in January 2015 has been in the shop replacing the transmission. My transmission is losing power and slipping. A very loud grinding noise started and every mile that I drove it gradually got worse causing it to lose power. I was told if problem is not fixed the vehicle will end up shutting off on its own while driving down the road. Thus creating a huge safety issue as it could cause an accident. When is a vehicle considered a lemon? I don't want to wait until something life threatening happens with my family , friends, or customers are in my vehicle. This is the 4th time that I have lost money from it being in the shop.
While driving my Jeep Patriot it started to make a whining noise and eventually the vehicle loss power. After sitting on the side of the road a while I started the vehicle and began to drive again with no problem but still I heard the whinning noise. After driving for a while again the vehicle loss power. After finally making it home I immediately got on the internet to research this problem. Only to find out that the Jeep Patriot cvt transmission is crap and the company won't do anything to fix it knowing that their product have problems. I'm disgusted an 09 with 53,000 miles and I need a new transmission. Our government and citizens bailed the Chrysler company out when they was at risk of losing everything and this is how they pay us back and say thank you, by selling us crap and being knowledgeable of the issues it has and do nothing about it. I was taught buying american is what keeps America employed, but it also leaves u stuck on the side of the road and wasting thousands of ur hard earned dollars on a junk product. I feel as though the Chrysler company should address this issue and fix their product its theirs they made it so fix it plain and simple but no after spending thousands on their vehicle they want u to also spend another $3500 in their dealerships on a new transmission this is robbery at its finest and nothing is done about it but again this is America home of the free. Free to do whatever u like and screw those that kept u afloat and bailed ur company out when you was on the brink of closing your doors.

In March, transmission overheated while on highway, lost speed very quickly. Took vehicle in, transmission fill tube was missing and then replaced. Over the next few months, I noticed extremely loud whining noises coming from vehicle while driving. Fuel mileage is extremely low. In July, the transmission overheated again, took it in to dealership with no diagnosis, opened up a star case with fiat-Chrysler, after 2 weeks, no diagnosis, picked up the vehicle, drove it for 1 week and transmission overheated with a crack in transmission fill tube again. The transmission overheats and does not report a repair code to the main computer in the vehicle and the manufacturer will not repair it without. Vehicle has broken down multiple times on highway due to transmission overheating.
Transmission overheat light, decrease speed on highway& noise. This is 4 th time this summer. Steamed on side of highway again this summer until turned off and cool down.
Started making whirring noise, lost power and transmission overheat light came on. Had to pull over on highway at night.
The contact owns a 2008 Jeep Patriot. The contact stated that while driving 45 mph, there was an abnormal noise coming from the underneath the hood. The contact mentioned that the failure occurred when reducing speed. The failure occurred on seven different occasions. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 38,000 and the current mileage was 38,600.
Started hearing a "whining" noise in the front end/engine area of the vehicle and after about 10-15 more minutes of driving, the vehicle lost all power and came to a stop. After sitting for a while, it would start back up and run just long enough to get it to a technicians shop. Technician ran some tests and found out that the cvt transmission was failing because there were metallic parts in the transmission fluid. After doing research, I found out that this is, and has been a recurring problem with this vehicle/powertrain and yet Jeep does nothing about this. I am out $4000. 00 because I have to replace a transmission at 80k miles!! rediculous!! transmissions should last way longer than that and due to the fact that there are thousands of others who have had the same experience with these cvt transmissions, this was not a "fluke" occurance.
Took vehicle in to dealer to diagnose noise coming from engine compartment. Noise (best described as a whine) becomes noticeable at 20 mph and increases in intensity with speed. Problem was diagnosed as being internal to the transmission (cvt) and will require that the transmission be replaced. This is not covered by the warranty.
The contact owns a 2012 Jeep Patriot. While driving approximately 70 mph, a loud whining noise sounded and the accelerator pedal was depressed. There was a significant reduction in the transmission power and the transmission warning indicator illuminated. The contact mentioned that the failure recurred multiple times during warm temperatures of 80 degrees or higher. The vehicle was taken to the dealer on six separate occasions for diagnostic testing, but the cause of the failure was unable to be determined. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 22,000.
This problem first happened a few years ago when I was driving on the interstate highway at 65 mph. It was summertime and it was about 80 degrees. I had bought the vehicle used about 6 months earlier in the fall. As I was driving the engine began to make a "whining out" noise and suddenly began to lose power. A light came on the dash area and my speed suddenly dropped down to about 40 mph and I was losing power to keep up with traffic. A tractor trailer that was traveling behind me had to slam on his brakes and almost lost control from trying to avoid running into the back of the car. I pulled off the interstate and called a tow truck. After waiting a couple of hours and letting the engine cool down, I started the car back up when the tow truck driver had arrived. He told me that this type of vehicle has a problem with the transmission overheating and causes the engine to lose power until it cools. I took the car to my local Jeep dealership and paid $100. 00 for a diagnostic test which did not reveal any other problem other than what I had experienced. The dealership told me that the light that came on in "normal" and is explained in the operating manual. They explained that it is "normal" for this to happen and there wasnt any defect or anyway to fix it. Since that time my car has done this continuously in hot weather when I am traveling on the highway. It has become dangerous for me to travel on the highway and risk breaking down on the side of the road or being collided with.
We purchased a used Jeep Patriot 2008 and within a few months had problems with the stability lights coming on when we slowed from highway and car needing to be restarted to regain power. The transmission kept doing a weird kickback. The vehicle was checked on the computer repeatedly and did not show a code. Also ,the oil change light kept coming on even after oil changed. We replaced arms , bearings, still issue not corrected . ( the bearing replaced twice by dealership a year ago is still making loud noises. ) recently the kickback is increasing and the dealership has advised us we need an entire new transmission. This is a 2008!!!!! 5 years old!!! there was a recall on some 2008 Patriots , but I am being advised not ours and so far Chrysler is refusing to do anything for us on the transmission.
The contact owns a 2008 Jeep Patriot 4x4. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, she noticed a loud grinding noise. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where they advised her that the transmission failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired for the transmission. Approximately 20,000 miles later the transmission experienced the same failure. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer where they advised her that the transmission had failed a second time. The manufacturer was contacted and had not yet responded to the contact's concerns. The failure mileage was approximately 42,000 and the current mileages were approximately 66,000.
I bought my Jeep in sept of 2010, took it for an oil change in Dec,2010. Was told I needed to replace the left lower control arm, I was told the Patriots were having alot of issues with that part coming out loose straight out of the factory. It makes a loud noise when I drive it. I've had multiple problems including the a/c ,check engine light is on for manifold problem ,transmission problems all within the two years that I've owned it.
Any time I take a long trip (1hr +) or I'm in heavy traffic my transmission light comes on accompanied with a whining noise and loss of power. I live in phoenix, arizona, so temps in the summer are extremely high. My wife was heading to flagstaff one day in mid August she lost power to our Patriot and couldn't go over 40mph. She was stuck in 115 degree heat for over one hour waiting for the vehicle to cool down. She had to repeat this three different time until she made it to her destination. I almost was rear ended when I lost power in the city trying to get off the road. Creates dangerous driving conditions!!.
Tl the contact owns a 2009 Jeep Patriot. Within less than six months of owning the vehicle, the rpms raced, the vehicle ran hot, and an abnormal noise was coming from the engine. In addition, the transmission idled roughly and the air bag warning indicator flashed. The dealer (nyle maxwell Chrysler Dodge Jeep ram of taylor, 14150 us-79, taylor, TX 76574, (512) 218-5300) was contacted. The vehicle was also serviced by south point Dodge Chrysler Jeep ram (5210 s ih 35 frontage rd, austin, TX 78745, (512) 782-2163) for routine maintenance. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to a dealer. The approximate failure mileage was 500.
