Jeep Patriot owners have reported 13 problems related to transmission failure (under the power train category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
I was stopped at a red light after exiting the interstate. The light turned green, I pressed the gas and the car accelerated for a few seconds and the. The wheels quit spinning and the engine light lit up on the dash. I was in the road nearly being missed by other cars and I was only able to get my car out of the road by turning of the car and cranking it back to move a few feet repeatedly until I reached a side road. I had the car towed to a highly rated repair shop and was told an electrical part inside the cvt transmission had failed, this was not due to failure to maintain the vehicle, and this was a design flaw within the cvt transmission. The repair is estimated to be $5194. 28. Estimate is attached.

Cvt transmission failed while driving on highway with no warning or symptoms.
Cvt transmission overheating failure at 70 to 75 mph on highway, car shut down without warning and I was forced to pull off to shoulder. If no shoulder potential fatality could have occurred from high speed trucks or cars unable to slow down thus crashing into rear of car. This situation has occurred with numerous Patriots documented on the internet, as well as mine. Chrysler refuses to correct the problem by a recall.
When I press on the gas to accelerate my vehiclr stalls and does not move then jerks very quickly flying my car forward. I was told I need a new transmission at 115,000 miles. Jeep has knowledge of the early cvt transmission failures and will not replace them. Very unsafe.

The contact owns a 2009 Jeep Patriot. While driving 65 mph, the contact noticed that the engine began to stall and the transmission indicator illuminated. The vehicle began to slow down and made a grinding sound. The contact pulled the vehicle over to the side of the road. When the contact turned off and restarted the vehicle, it operated normally. The vehicle was driven to st. Michael car care center (500 central Ave e, saint michael, mn 55376) where it was diagnosed that the transmission failed and needed to be replaced. The dealer (stillwater motors, 5900 stillwater blvd n, stillwater, mn 55082) was informed of the failure and offered to trade in the vehicle. The manufacturer was notified and informed the contact of NHTSA campaign number: 08v528000 (power train), but the VIN was not included in the recall. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 150,000.
The Patriot cvt transmission is faulty and subject to early transmission failure. Around 90,000 miles, my transmission began overheating. This happens while traveling on the highway going an average of 65-70mph for more than an hour, transmission overheat warning light turns on and car begins to lose power. It's necessary to pull over and wait for cooldown with car turned off for at least 10 minutes- which is extremely dangerous to do on a major highway, sometimes at night. Jeep states this shouldn't happen unless you are towing or the temperature outside is exceedingly hot. My Patriot does this every time I take a trip that requires an hour or more of highway driving, regardless of temperature outside and despite the fact that I do not tow anything ever. Transmission whines loudly in the process and the car will slowly lose acceleration power right before the overheat light turns on. It's a scary experience every time. I've taken my Jeep into the dealership under warranty to fix this problem, however- their solution of changing out some valves did not prove to be effective as the problem continues to happen. Interstingly enough, Jeep ceased using the cvt transmission in 2014 after only 2 years- im assuming this problem has something to do with it.
Second complain about transmission failure. Vehicle needs new transmission again after 3 years from being replaced. As I was driving on I-70 from my hospital job in the morning rush commute, my Patriot decided to drop speed from 70 mph to 30 mph on a blink of an eye. This time since I was alone just putting me in danger unlike the last time in 2013 when it happen that my 11 year old and 1 year old baby were on board. I swerve to the shoulder yet again to avoid being hit by traficc I proceed as I recall to turn ignition off and try to maintain tacometer from reaching 3000 rpm to avoid transmission safe mode to kick in again as I make it home.

Numerious cvt transmission failure / overheat at highway speeds, very unsafe due to deceleration. Started in Aug 2016 and happens monthly anytime more than 45 minutes of driving.
The contact owns a 2012 Jeep Patriot. The contact stated that the transmission failed while driving 70 mph. The vehicle decelerated and caused the limp mode to activate. The contact was able to coast onto the road shoulder. After waiting a few minutes, the contact was able to restart the engine. The failure was experienced numerous times. The vehicle was taken to skyland Chrysler Jeep Dodge (255 smokey high park land, ashville nc 28806 phone (828-667-5213)) for diagnostic testing, but a failure code could not be located. The dealer stated that there was nothing wrong with the vehicle. The failure mileage was 26,000.
My 2008 Jeep Patriot has only 59k miles on it. My wife was driving on the interstate and it began to make a roaring sound from the transmission. We took it to the dealership and they said the cvt transmission needed replaced. Jeep will not provide any assistance and want over $4000 for a transmission replacement of a transmission that is not able to be service and (according to owners book) needs fluid changed around 120k. I researched and found multiple people that have cvt transmission failures at low mileage. Jeep is even getting rid of the cvt in the new Jeep Patriot. This transmission is a lemon and the company should assist with replacement when it goes out early.
