Jeep Patriot owners have reported 160 problems related to steering (under the steering category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Jeep Patriot based on all problems reported for the Patriot.
After filling up gas tank and driving for about a mile, vehicle stutters and stalls. During this, the brakes are difficult to work and the steering goes out. This has happened after filling gas tank many times, most recently in the middle of a busy street where I was almost rear ended. Afterward, I shut the vehicle off and then restart. It has a slow start, and the problem sometimes happens one or two additional times, but then runs fine until the next time I have to fill up the gas tank. The vehicle has been inspected and no solution was found. There were no warnings before this happened.

My car will pull to the right no matter what I do. Tires rotated, air filled, etc it always pulls to the right hard. My electrical system, lights and radio, flicked on and off by themselves one night and now my radio is dead and lights are dim.

Vehicle pulling to the right when accelerating from complete stop. Excessive vibration noticeable when idling.
My abs module has gone out, giving me an unsafe Jeep Patriot, now with zero abs or traction control, major issue in tampa driving! apparently, according to the dealer here, they're on "galactic back order" for a few years now; I couldn't even find one at a used parts store in the area. . . Had to resort to ebay, having it installed at the dealership this week, who says they'll install it (janet) but they won't guarantee they can program it and it will reset those dash lights?!?! they can't guarantee it? then something needs to be figured out to guarantee I have a working Jeep, complete with abs and traction control. This is a major, according to several people I've spoken with but there's no recall? if something is on back-order for the dealership for years, something needs to be done, you have Jeep customers riding around unsafely in vehicles they purchased with safety features, feel free to call for more details. Shane shephard 540-355-7777 p. S. I'll have a receipt after I go to the Jeep dealer this week, have it installed with no guarantee, but it'll be in. . . Might not work, but it'll be in. . . And that's good enough?!?!?!?!.

While driving the vehicle will randomly, without warning or any dash notification icons alerted, turn off engine- radio, lights, a/c everything else is still on but engine is off. This occurred 4 times in less than a 2 mile distance without any check engine or notification lights on the dash before, during, or after the event. This issue originally started about a week ago, when the check engine and throttle system notification icons came on, followed immediately by the car going into what seemed to be limp mode. Car was towed to the Jeep dealership, they said issue was the battery and that an oil change was needed. Had issues addressed took the car how two days later, same issue occurred again. While driving same two icons suddenly came on then car went immediately into limp mode and was not driveable. Took the car back to the Jeep dealer, they took a few days to drive it and stated it was the fuel throttle body that needed to be replaced. Had the part replaced and the car drove as normal, no icons on dash after the repair, next morning same issue occurred again while driving, icons come on dash, immediately car goes into limp mode. Circling back to the biggest concern, is I’ve found large amounts of owners having the exact same if not oddly similar issues with varying years of the Jeep Patriots. Many are reporting my reason for this report in that suddenly after Jeep dealers require all these repairs they’re experiencing the engine completely shutting off while driving. This is incredibly dangerous and I’m concerned as to why there a. Isn’t a repair for this common issue in these models, and b. Why a recall hasn’t been submitted for the most dangerous scenario where many owners are having their cars engines shut down while driving, and some at high speeds. This is incredibly dangerous and frustrating that our safety has not been addressed when online there are years worth of forums for these issues without resolution.
On 5 occasions at various speeds and types of roads, my vehicle suddenly goes into limp mode, the engine shuts off and power steering goes out. I have very limited time and control to move off the road before the car behind me slams into me. The majority of the instances this has happened, the orange anti-skid light comes on though road conditions were fine. I found a recall of 2016 Jeep Patriots (s89/NHTSA 16-v-907 crankshaft/camshaft sensor wire harness) and many complaints I've found experiencing the same thing I experienced were included in this recall. Mechanic ran my Jeep's code and it showed a number of things were triggered but he couldn't pinpoint what exactly could be the cause based on the code errors. I have a young child in a car seat in the back of my car and feel extremely unsafe taking her anywhere, let alone when it's just me in the car. Please consider adding the 2015 Patriot to this recall.
The contact owns a 2010 Jeep Patriot. The contact stated that while getting a routine oil change at the dealer the mechanic stated that there was a large hole in the subframe due to excessive rusting. The contact was informed that the subframe needed to be replaced. The contact recalled technical service bulletin, NHTSA id 10140027 (suspension, steering) from approximately 5 years ago and inquired if the vehicle could be repaired under the TSB. The contact was informed that the TSB was no longer valid. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and confirmed that the TSB was no longer valid. The approximate failure mileage was 136,560.

Vehicle suddenly stalls with no prior warning, both while driving and at rest. This cannot be duplicated and does not throw codes on the code scanner. Occasionally it will "hiccup" and keep going instead of a complete stall. Rpm drops to zero and will then jump back to their prior reading. The vehicle becomes impossible to control (stalled so no speed st all abd difficult to steer). Mechanic cannot duplicate problem or find code on their reader. We have replaced the throttle body and one camshaft sensor but not the other, more difficult to reach sensor. There is a current recall for camshaft/crankshaft sensor that applies to some 2016 Jeep Patriots but ours falls outside of that manufacturing date range.
Front and rear crossmember assembly rusted through car available. Acknowledged history on this and related models of Chrysler products resulting in a additional 10 yr warrantee on these components which was not communicated to original owners and has now expired. Vehicle has the potential to lose driver control and cause injury or death. No warning but rust has been visible for years but consumers not advised of extended warrantee. Now cost of repair exceeds book value. Jeep disavows any responsibility for this defect in materials after the warrantee's expiration.

Vehicle is known to have an issue with rusting subframe/crossmembers . Warranty on this vehicle was extended. (service bulletin 23-007-17, x69 warranty extension) however upon multiple dealer visits and requesting inspection was not notified that issue was happening. Approximately 1. 5 years after warranty extension had expired noticeable issues started occurring including noises that got worse and prompted a visit to dealer. Had to fight tooth and nail to get dealership or company to work with me on repairs on low mileage (121k) vehicle and even then they missed 1/2 the problem and told me not to come back to the shop. What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? - see beginning - how was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? - front crossmember completely rotted out and separated, holding on by only control arm - has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? - yes, know issues but wording of service bulletin and dealership neglect result in customer not being informed or postponement of repair until too late - has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? - dealership - were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? - no warning other than single notification of warranty extension, asked for vehicle inspection 7 months prior to warranty expiration and given an all good -.

I went to get my car inspected and was told that I would need to replace my cross member/subframe which would cost thousands. I was trying to figure out how to fix it for less when I came across a discussion board where everyone with these vehicles were having the same problem. I also look on youtube and all the comments under multiple videos showing how to replace it also had the same problem. This issue is Chrysler knew this was an issue and extended the warranty for that part and most owner of that vehicle had no idea they did. The owner ended up paying thousands for the part or trading their car in and buying another one. I believe Chrysler quietly extended the warranty and never properly notified vehicle owners of the extension. They also didn’t make any type of public announcement that would inform drivers who brought the cars used after one or more owners had it. They also did not allot enough time for the warranty. In the extension letter to dealership I dug up online was announced in 2017. The cars with this issue where produced in 2008-12 but they only extended the warranty to ten years from the start of service. That means if you brought a car in 2008 you would have had less than one year to realize you where eligible for a new subframe under warranty. Also they should have recalled the parts since so many people were have issues with it. And if one’s lived in a state where they don’t need safety inspections they would never have known.
Within 1. 5 years my car kept slowing down when driving out of no where. We almost crashed because the car literally won’t pick up speed or just jolts a few times then stops. We spent over $1000 to have it fixed with 3 different mechanics. They said it was the crankshaft I believe and catalytic converters. We just got the car brand new in 2016 so this has been frustrating because we get oil changes every 3 months and take great car of the car. We’ve had two get brakes don’t over and over and also when you turn the wheels it’s loud and sounds like the ending of a roller coaster when you here it turning. The rides are not smooth either you can see my hand shaking hard when driving even at slow speeds like 35 mph. Jeep really sold us a lemon and we have been paying such a high car note on top fixing things each year. After so many complaints, they really should reimburse people who spend money fixing the same issue. A law suit may handle the issues as well but due diligence would be Jeep seeing the issues and repairing the problem or refunding for the repairs. I’m hoping someone else will see my complaints and think twice before purchasing this vehicle.
I kept hearing an odd click, creek noise from the driver side front end. It sounded like something was hanging or something had broken off. I took it into a shop and it was discovered that the front sub frame was rotted in several places and had broken. When the rear was inspected, it is rotted to the point where you could push your finger through if you tried, and there was a section bent. I can no longer drive this vehicle, and I am still paying on my vehicle. I owe $4,900. The repairs would range from $2,500-$3,000, if it even can be repaired, just for the front. The shop stated there was a recall to fix this issue so I'm reaching out to see if this could be covered or what measures are offered if any in this situation.
My Jeep will not pass inspection because of excessive rust/rot on the front and rear sub frame. To have both front and rear sub frames repaired will cost me approximately $3,000 dollars, which I do not have. This should have been recalled and covered by manufacturer long before this time. What am I suppose to do know with no usable vehicle ???.
Vehicle engine stopped. Loss of steering. Yes yes engine light was on, hesitation on acceleration. Safety recall s89 has been done 5-3-2017 at 4,973 miles, and was told that there was a 2 year warranty on the repair?.
I’ve had numerous problems with this car. I’ve already replaced cv axles and now the steering knuckle needs replaced! the car is shaking and knocking and is not safe to drive. It’s being replaced in a few days but is costing over $800 and this car has not been in an accident and is only 6 years old.
The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Patriot. The contact stated that while driving at 40 mph, the vehicle started shaking uncontrollably in the front end, causing the steering wheel to vibrate uncontrollably. The contact also heard abnormal sounds coming from the vehicle. No warning light was illuminated. The vehicle had not been diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and determined that the vehicle was not under recall or warranty. The failure mileage was unknown.
While driving at highway speed and hitting a small pothole, the vehicle's handling and tracking deteriorated instantly. After that, loud scraping noises were heard when moving the vehicle forward or backwards. After getting the vehicle off the road we found that the rear suspension cross member rusted out and cracked, causing the rear suspension to be loose. Chrysler extended the warranty on this part due to premature rust for 10 years, but this is a safety defect and it should be handled as a recall and not just a warranty extension.
I would like to recall my 2016 Jeep Patriot because the crankshaft and camshaft sensor are failing to work properly and that increases the risk of crash. There were also problems with the steering column and the tires being off balance because after balancing was found to move without the steering wheel being turned. The recall is important because the vehicle is potential for crash . I only found these things out after driving and seller claimed everything was at top shape but bent the truth due to the small amount of miles put on the vehicle and the fact that I didn't crash the vehicle.
After refueling car stalls when this happens loss of power steering brakes etc dangerous entering busy roads from gas stations been happening consistently, many other owners report same problem across multyears of manufacture.
The front subframe rusted through on the left hand side which in turn caused the lower control arm to shift outward preventing full steering capabilities. There was a warranty extension dated back from 2017, brought into service on December of 2019, to the Chrysler dealership where it was purchased for lights on the cluster and a steering vibration and no one mentioned the subframe issue that was persisting on this model year. Was told rather that it needed a new bearing and a speed sensor. Replaced both and the issue wasn’t fixed. I am told now (July 2021) that this extension expired in March of this same year. Was told by both the dealer and the customer service hotline that there is absolutely nothing they can do. They also mentioned that there should have been a letter sent out for this warranty extension but nothing was ever received. Been at the same address since well before the purchase date of this vehicle.
The contact owns a 2011 Jeep Patriot. The contact stated while getting the vehicle inspected, she was informed that the front and rear cross member had holes due to rust. The vehicle was not taken to a local dealer nor an independent mechanic to be diagnosed. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact was relating the failure to NHTSA campaign number: 11v315000 (steering). The manufacturer was informed of the failure and informed the contact that the vehicle was not eligible for the free repair. The failure mileage was approximately 131,641.
I purchased my 2011 Jeep Patriot from a car dealership in October of 2020. After a week of having the vehicle, I noticed a loud clunking sound coming from underneath. I took it back to the dealer and was told it was nothing. After taking it to my mechanic, he found major rust and corrosion on the front and rear subframe and crossmembers. I paid $2200 in repairs on the car, only to find out the he only did the front end of the car. The back end is just as bad and the car is unsafe for me to drive. When he did the front end of the car, the pieces fell apart as he began taking it apart. This car was a ticking time bomb. It’s now June of 2021 and I don’t know what to do.
The Jeep Patriot 2016 latitude 4wd has been having issues "jerking" and today had a couple moments where all power and steering was gone and the accelerator pedal wouldn't pick the car back up to speed. I was driving at about 55mph on a highway and all power went out and I lost steering. It was very scary and dangerous. Please Jeep fox this problem and own up to the manufacturer defect your vehicle is reported over and over to have!.
Sometimes when I turn my steering wheel the air bag light turns on. It does not always stay on and only comes on occasionally, usually when I make a turn. I got the diagnostics tan and the error code b1b02 driver airbag squib 1 circuit open. There was recently a couple of recalls (s61 occupant restraint controller and n01 reprogram occupant control restraint module) for my 2010 Jeep Patriot. I believe this issue with the error code I’m receiving is related to the recall issue, especially since the light does not stay on consistently.
Transmission started with a whining sound, then the check engine light came on, the SUV then began to sputter, then it stopped accelerating on the interstate. I pulled off to the side to restart my vehicle and it ran fine for a few miles and began to do this again. Something with the cvt transmission. Going to cost a fortune to fix. Chrysler should be responsible. This is a dangerous glitch in their vehicles.
I was driving not far from my house doing between 20 and 25 mph. The road is very windy and being a secondary road there are no guard rails. Both sides of the road are heavily populated with trees. Coming up to another curve in the road I applied my brakes the slow a little more to take the curve, as I started to turn the steering wheel I realized it would not turn, it was locked in place. Now I'm applying my brakes harder, fighting to turn my steering wheel and stop, all to no avail. I hit a tree before I could steer my Jeep. My "purchased new" 2016, in very good condition is now totaled, windows blowout, airbags deployed, and thank god I walked away with the help of ems, firefighters and police. I am a single working mother, who could have lost her life. I know there is no recall on my VIN number but there are numerous complains about other Jeeps, (my year and other years) with the steering locking up or freezing. At the time of this writing the police report was not ready. I will obtain that report. I also think I should request the insurance company have the Jeep checked out to see if they can tell what caused the accident. If this can be done also, I will obtain this report also and upload everything with pictures of my totaled Jeep. Thanking you advance for any help you can supply.
The contact owns a 2015 Jeep Patriot. The contact stated while driving at various speeds with the accelerator pedal depressed, the vehicle stalled. The contact stated that the vehicle was shifted to park and turned off. After waiting for several minutes, the vehicle was restarted and regained power; however, the vehicle was sputtering while starting. The check engine warning light illuminated with a red lightning bolt flashing when the failure occurred. The failure reoccurred after being repaired. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic and the contact was informed that the electronic throttle body had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The failure recurred a second time and the vehicle was returned to the mechanic but was not yet diagnosed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 124,000.
While driving in heavy traffic, the vehicle suddenly shut off, the steering locked and I was extremely luckily. Immediately after, absolutely nothing happened when turning the key. Also no horn, no lights . . . Nothing. A similar thing happened 2 years ago and the Jeep dealer stated it was a computer issue.
I was turning onto my street and my wheels locked up. I parked car (my son was in the back 3. 9 years old) and noticed smoke under the hood, opened the hood and saw a huge fire. Went to store so had water - poured 6 water bottles on the fire to put it out.
I was driving on a street in a residential area and my Jeep started to jerk all of a sudden. I was no longer able to accelerate. This started happening in may and the last time is happened was June 22 2020. Jeep needs to put out a recall ASAP!.
While driving the vehicle on the highway the front frame broke and the cv and front drivers side wheel fell off the vehicle, I had to wrestle the vehicle off the road. The vehicle has had to have both front and back replaced with several other parts the dealer had broke in the process of "fixing" it.
It has been making a cracking/clunking noise there for years. My wife complained of it sounding louder than normal, so I looked at it closer and noticed the crossmember was broken. I've been having issues with that side for several years and have replaced broken ball joints and control arms. I found out last night that this would've been a warranty item had I brought my vehicle in 6 months ago, but am being told that I brought it in too late. My reply was I didn't know that this was an issue and wasn't notified that there was an extended warranty placed on that part.
Day 3 of driving on highways for a long distance vacation trip, the front end started making noises; couldn't pinpoint location of noise. Suspected wheel caliper on front drivers' side, or something in that area. Day 4, I knew I had to do something. Noise was still there; noise would slow down and disappear when applying brakes, yet was still there at slow speeds. Drove to a pepboys; noise became worse, and I had difficulty turning tight corners to pull into their parking space. Was totally afraid to drive the car any further. Pepboys did some road testing, and put car up on lift. My front control arms had rusted and torn bushings. Pepboys replaced the control arms and I have not had any problems since (including return 3-day highway driving trip). I contacted Jeep to see if they would reimburse me the cost of the control arms since my car was still under warranty; they would not. Car was purchased new on 2/16/2017. Mileage in at pepboys was 28,936. I have both control arms; attached pictures are of the bushings. Can take more pictures if necessary.

The partriot randomly stalls while travelling at any speed. The engine shuts off and car has to coast to a stop. It is extremely dangerous and only a matter of time before someone is injured or killed. Multiple mechanics and the Jeep dealership have no clue as to how to fix the problem. Online research shows this is a major issue for many Jeep owners, not just Patriots. Jeep / Chrysler has a major issue and will not acknowledge or address it. If they refuse to do anything, they should be prepared to pay for their lack of addressing this critical issue. It takes less than a minute to search and see how many people are affected with engine stalling issues with Jeep automobiles. I hope the NHTSA will conduct a thorough review of these issues and force more attention to be given to the serious issue. I bought this car for my daughter and now we can't let her drive it because it is too dangerous. We have spent over $2k trying to address this issue. There are no recalls or other assistance that Jeep can or will offer.
