Cooling Fan problems of the 2016 Jeep Renegade - part 1

36 problems related to cooling fan have been reported for the 2016 Jeep Renegade. The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Cooling Fan problem

Failure Date: 08/11/2021

Unknown I was recently sold a vehicle that I feel should be under the "safe car" issues. The engine cooling fan. If an engine cooling fan is not working right, this can cause the engine to overheat and the potential exists for a vehicle fire. How is that not a safety issue? two manufacturer recalls on the Jeep Renegade 2016: #v54 2015-2017 vm bu fb engine cooling fan #w20 2013-2019 mutli vehicle 2. 4 reprogram pcm ph1 I bought a car not realizing the signficance of these recalls which were not explained to me at the time of purchase. Neither recall repairs were done by the previous owner. I feel the engine cooling fan is a serious safety issue yet it is not listed on your website. This means other unsuspecting buyers can purchase cars without salespeople being required to disclose detailed recall information. Nor whether or not this recall was taken care of by the previous owner. In my case, it was not.

2 Cooling Fan problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2020

Cooling fan failed at 59,000 miles causing the car to overheat when running ac or at idle, slow moving speeds.

3 Cooling Fan problem

Failure Date: 04/01/2020

While driving, there is a clunk sound when the engine tries to switch gears. Also, the brake lights, turn signal lights, etc have a warning light that flashes saying the lights are out even when the lights are still working. I also had to replace he cooling fan in may 2018 due to my vehicle stopping, wouldn't drive, wouldn't start.

4 Cooling Fan problem

Failure Date: 01/25/2020

Thermostat failure code p0128 appeared and thermostat needed to be replaced. As this vehicle had recall on the cooling fan assembly, this failure is directly related to the malfunction of the fan unit.

5 Cooling Fan problem

Failure Date: 12/23/2019

Cooling fan went out at 42,700 miles. Fan would make noise and rattle anytime the vehicle was at a stop, accelerating or when shutting the vehicle off, fan would shake the entire vehicle. Entire cooling fan assembly had to be replaced. Vehicle is now at 52,884 miles and the fan is making noise again.

6 Cooling Fan problem

Radiator cooling fan malfunctioned.

7 Cooling Fan problem

The cooling fan failed and blew the fuse. The loss of cooling also caused the engine to overheat while on the freeway.

8 Cooling Fan problem

Failure Date: 06/22/2019

I took vehicle to dealership on 5/2/19 after the cooling fan made a loud squealing noise when it was idling with a/c on. Dealership stated that they could find nothing wrong with the vehicle & sent me on my way. On 6/22/19 while returning from my lunch break ( Jeep had been idling with a/c on in a drive through & fan began making a rattling noise - fan turning on/off in cycles) smoke started pouring from under hood, accompanied by a strong smell of something burning. I turned the vehicle off immediately & when I restarted it the service engine light came on. I had the Jeep towed from my place of employment to the dealership ( I'm a nurse, and missed a day of work due to this! ). Picking my Jeep up from dealership today to the tune of $484. 52 to replace cooling fan. I see that this is an ongoing issue, and that a class action lawsuit was filed on 2/11/19 due to numerous consumer complaints. I'm thankful that this happened at 7pm rather than at midnight while driving home on the highway. . . . . . At the end of the day my vehicle could have caught on fire. Apparently defective cooling fan is something Jeep has known about for years & I can't believe there hasn't been a recall.

9 Cooling Fan problem

Failure Date: 06/04/2019

My car was making a noise when I would accelerate like friction. Noticed a smell coming from ac vents. Took my vehicle into certified Jeep dealership. I was told about recall on engine cooling fan on my year and make of vehicle but my VIN wasnt listed even though it was the same exact issue. 700$ for fan replacement when mopar clearly acknowledges issue.

10 Cooling Fan problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2019

I have had a problem with my car for a while now. It makes a sound, which friends and family have said sounds like a broken fan, when I am stopped or idling. It is a clicking and whirring sound that I can hear from outside and inside of the car. I have seen videos which describe an issue with the 2015/2016 Jeep Renegade engine cooling fan, which sounds exactly like what I am dealing with. I have also heard there have been recalls of this vehicle. I am not sure this is the exact issue, but I am afraid it might develop into the smoking and overheating that other owners of this car have experienced.

11 Cooling Fan problem

Failure Date: 05/26/2019

Electric fan assembly for the cooling system failed. Burned up the electric fan, smoke pouring out of the engine bay. Vehicle was in motion on a city street.

12 Cooling Fan problem

Failure Date: 05/18/2019

Tl the contact owns a 2016 Jeep Renegade. The contact stated that the cooling fans were not working and the fuses would blow out, causing the engine to overheat. The contact had to pull the vehicle over and allow it to cool down. The dealer (c & c Dodge Chrysler Jeep, 1305 pike st, building a, marietta, OH 45750, (740) 373-2928) replaced the fan and the fuse assembly. The manufacturer stated that there were no recalls on the vehicle. The failure mileage was 38,000. The VIN was unknown.

13 Cooling Fan problem

Failure Date: 05/10/2019

While idling at a stop light, the cooling fan could be heard making a weird noise, followed by a strong odor. This happened one time earlier while idling and the air conditioning was on. The strong odor made me take it to a shop near me for fear of driving it. Luckily it was colder than usual or it would have overheated. Upon looking into the issue and having my cooling fan replaced, I found it was a common issue in the 2016 models, and has been fixed for (or part of) the 2017 models. I checked with the dealership and they confirmed no official recalls were sent, and I don't understand why. Luckily, I got this replaced before something bad happened, but I've spoken with numerous other Renegade owners who had the vehicles break down and had to be towed to shops for repairs. I did have an extended warranty, but because I took it to shop near me (for fear of driving it) instead of the dealership, they only covered part of the repair which was about $200 out of my $550 bill. I don't understand why these are being left out on the road when it is a known issue. The dealer who provided the part even had multiple fans in stock, indicating this is a common problem.

14 Cooling Fan problem

Failure Date: 04/27/2019

Sitting in event traffic car sitting still and smelled burning from air vents, the panel instrument was reading car overheating. Once we were able to get out of traffic and get car up to speed the car stopped overheating but could not let car idle/sit still or car will overheat. Car has 48k miles purchased new, told dealership this should not be happening and service tech stated this was the 3rd to 4th one this week they have worked on with same problem. Now looking at close to $600 to replace cooling fan. I feel this should be looked into as a manufacturing issue for recall with so many complaints that I have found online with this model with the same issue of cooling fan problems.

15 Cooling Fan problem

Failure Date: 03/24/2019

Cooling fan began making rattling noise, blew fuse, resulting in check engine light. Vehicle's mileage is 47396. Entire cooling fan assembly had to be replaced. Total cost $878. 86. Jeep denies responsibility for faulty fan. Multiple complaints concerning this issue without any recalls to correct this faulty part.

16 Cooling Fan problem

Failure Date: 03/15/2019

When vehicle is stationary while warming up. Grinding noise started. Turned off the engine and checked the hood. Couldn't see anything so I carried on. Later in traffic, grinding noise from engine compartment starts. Temperature shoots into red, and I start smelling something burning. Engine light came on and found it was the cooling fan. Doing some research online came to find out this a problem with tons of other people. I feel this is a known manufacturer's defect that should be recalled. Failure can happen at any time and could result in a blown motor and/or other damages resulting in a vehicle crash causing serious injury or death. I'm glad I was able to pull over and shut the vehicle off before anything major happend. These fans should be living a 100,000 mile life. But it's happening at 30,000-70,000 miles. Jeep will not cover this under warranty as they say it isn't part of the drivetrain. After reading numerous complaints about this problem I feel this is a known manufacturer's defect that should be recalled. The problem is so widespread that Jeep ran out of them and had/has long wait times. During this period the vehicle is unusable. This is really unacceptable for such a newer model vehicle. My vehicle is currently at 52,000 miles and now I'm going to have to pay $350 in repairs along with the $150 part.

17 Cooling Fan problem

Failure Date: 02/11/2019

Engine cooling fan motor doesnt even last 35,000 miles without being replaced. Bearings in the fan motor go bad!.

18 Cooling Fan problem

Failure Date: 02/06/2019

First at 25000 miles engine cooling fan went out and rattled so loud and overheated had to be towed. Took dealership a week just to get the parts. Now at 34000 miles engine died and vehicle stopped on highway on ramp almost causing a severe accident. No engine lights came on. I drove it and would not drive over 10 mph while making a horrible noise than engine dies in middle of the road almost another accident. Finally got restarted and quit again now every light on dash came on. Popped the hood and absolutely no oil in engine! was just at dealership the week before and they did their multipoint inspection and marked oil as full? so in a week it lost 5 quarts of oil? was towed again and sat at dealership for two weeks as they could not figure out engine knocking sound! than they call and said everything checked out fine!??. Drove home smelling burnt oil as always since new and checked dipstick, they overfilled it by at least a quart! unbelievable. Engine runs horrible and in 100 miles has already dropped a quart on dipstick. Blowing oil out exhaust pipe. Can't trust this vehicle and no one has an answer or fix!!???. Total most ridiculous and dangerous thing ever gone through. Somebody will get killed with a vehicle like this. Unbelievable! 2. 4l engine.

Failure Date: 09/23/2018

Tl the contact owns a 2016 Jeep Renegade. The contact detected a burning odor coming from the air vents inside the vehicle and noticed smoke coming from the engine compartment. The contact stated that the engine was burning hot because the fan failed to cool off the engine. 24 Cooling Fan problem

Failure Date: 06/30/2018

Cooling fan started rattling very loud. It seems to be loose. Vehicle has 40114 miles. Research on internet confirms that this is a very common problem and Jeep redesigned their cooling fan for replacements and newer vehicle. This should be a recall sinc it is a known problem!!!.

25 Cooling Fan problem

Failure Date: 03/02/2018

Just like sooo many people online out radiator cooling fan started wobbling and now grinding. There are so many forums, sites and videos that show this is happening to a lot of people. A recall is not yet in effect but it needs to be ASAP. Cost is 400-1000 for each repair. And don't let them try to say it's an issue of dirt. It's usually around 36,000 miles so don't wait to fix it as the warrenty will expire.

26 Cooling Fan problem

Failure Date: 02/15/2018

Started running hot out of the blue. Checked fuses and the main fuse to the fan was blown. Replaced the fuse but the fan still is not turning on. Vehicle is still running hot and producing smoke/steam along with a burning smell. The symptoms started while waiting in stopped traffic but seemed to clear up while moving, then got worse while sitting idle with ac unit on. I have been reading up on if there are issues related to mine and there seem to be a lot of issues with the cooling fan. Why is this not a recall??.

27 Cooling Fan problem

Failure Date: 02/15/2018

At about 41000 miles when the cooling fan started to wobble and started to smell. Took it in to get it repaired. It was the cooling fan. After doing some research, over 1000s have had this issue due to faulting bearings in the fan. I urge to demand a recall on this.

28 Cooling Fan problem

Failure Date: 01/27/2018

Cooling fan shakes rattles isn't working properly car gives off an antifreeze smell or electrical smell when fan malfunctions.

29 Cooling Fan problem

Failure Date: 12/05/2017

3 weeks ago I heard a wobbling sound under the hood while the car was idling. It was a day later I was able catch what it was making the noise which is the cooling fan. I had it towed to the dealership not wanting to drive it for fear of overheating. The issue was confirmed there and after two false arrival dates I spoke to the dealership and thy finally admitted there was no date for the arrival of the new fan. I am now paying for a car I have no idea when I will get back. My job requires me to travel long distances and the older car I am using now is not very reliable for this type of travel.

30 Cooling Fan problem

Failure Date: 10/12/2017

Radiator cooling fan make noise and stop working during slow speed city driving. Engine overheated. Only 6,000 miles on the odometer. Took the car for warranty repair. It's being sitting at the dealer's service area for 42 days with no expected repair date. As per dealer's service manager, the replacement part is out of stock with no eta from manufacturer.

32 Cooling Fan problem

Failure Date: 09/17/2017

Radiator cooling fan failure (seized). Parts on backorder lead-time 2 months. This happened while driving on city streets. Had a burning smell with smoke coming from the front of the vehicle. Stopped to check the motor, discovered the radiator cooling fan was not running. Pushed the fan blade, it was seized. The water temp got up to 250+, high temperature light came on, stopped and let it cool down enough to get it to the dealership. Cooled to 130, drove approx. 5 miles to the dealership and left it at the night drop (Sunday 9/17/2017).

33 Cooling Fan problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2017

This vehicles electric cooling fan has worn out with less then 45,000 miles. After calling around to different dealerships and parts departments. Information obtained is there are more then 2500 back orders for this part. We will have to wait 3 to 4 weeks before we could see this part being delivered to make repairs. Seems to me that if you have this many back orders then maybe there is an issue with the part.

34 Cooling Fan problem

Failure Date: 08/08/2017

First cooling fan module burned out at 15k miles oct 2016, only detected by electrical smoke pouring from fan motor. No dummy light. Currently in shop for second cooling fan module at 38k miles. Both happened with no warning while idling.

35 Cooling Fan problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2017

Jeep has a backorder on their cooling fans. We haven't been able to drive our Jeep Renegade for 3 months because there is a backorder of 1400 cooling fans just in my area. Someone needs to check into this problem. There is obviously something wrong. Fan makes a loud noise while running. Afraid to drive it, fear of something catching on fire.
