13 problems related to noises during shifting have been reported for the 2000 Jeep Wrangler. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Transmission is and was still very difficult to shift from second (2nd) gear after being driven for more than 20 minutes. It takes quite a lot of force and therefore creates a safety hazard for me. It also (the new transmission and the old transmission) makes noise (rather loud) when the clutch is not pressed in.
Transmission makes noise when in nuetral and clutch is diengaged/shifting is difficult.
Transmission makes loud noise when in neutral or when clutch is released, also 1st or 2nd gear is hard, sometime impossible to shift which nearly cause accidents. Sometimes impossible to shift).
5 speed manual transmission started (nv3500) is not shifting smoothly into any gear. There is resistance and a grinding sound during shifting into any and all gears. Transmission emits a "clunking" noise when clutch is disengaged between gear shifts. On 11/06/2000, vehicle was taken to dealership responsible for warranty service repairs. Dealer claimed that they road-tested the vehicle and that all shifting functions were "working to factory specs". Dealership refused to perform any further investigation into this complaint and did not offer a remedy or offer to repair. After 2 more weeks of operation, the gear grinding is getting worse and more resistive to shifting from gear to gear.
Transmission is hard to shift 1st to 2nd gear, sometimes it does not engage, also loud noise coming out from the transmission when the clutch is released.
Transmission has been replaced but still makes grinding noise when in neutral. If clutch is depressed noise will go away. Also, stick shift is very difficult to move after highway travel.
Very hard to down shift from 5th after highway driving, loud clutch noise when idling in neutral.
Grinding noise when clutch disengared and while driving. Hard to shift. Gringing noise when vehicle is turned off. Contacted and brought to dealer 4x on 4th x dealer said transmission need to replaced as well as the bearing spring and fork.
At initial delivery of vehicle and driving home heard a low grinding sound. It was very difficult to shift. Contacted dealer, and dealer replaced transmission. New transmission noisy, manufacturer said noise was acceptable.
I bought the Jeep new and have had transmission problems since. Shifting is very tight with a grinding noise. There is a rattling noise when the vehicle is in neutral. I like all the other complaints I have read and really frustrated at the time taken off of work to fix the problem with no answers or cures for the problem after 2 years. I will never buy another Jeep product.
Transmission makes a rattling noise at idle & when engaging clutch in 1st gear. It is very hard to get in and out of gear, somtimes it feels like your shifting with out a clutch. This problem has been since the Jeep was bought new in July 2000. I took it to the dealership once they replaced clutch assembly. 2 days later it was doing the same thing again. Its going back to service April 10th. Ive read that several people have had the same problem with there Jeeps. I think Chrysler needs to solve the problem and correct it. I understand that every new car can have its problems, but Chrysler needs to solve them and fix them!!! I dont want to have to take my "new car" to service every month to get a transmission or clutch put in it. If I was going to do that I would have bought a used one for about half the price!!!.
Since the day I picked up my Jeep from the dealer it has made a loud grinding/growling noise when it is in neutral with the cluch out. It sound like it would be the input shaft bearing to the tranny. At first when the dealer heard it they said it sounds like a bad bearing to them, but when I took it in to have them look at it further they said that the noise was normal. There are other problems with it popping out of gear and hard to shift, which I have not experianced yet but due to the noise I suspect that is not far away.
Nvg 3550 5-speed manual produces loud noise when idling in neutral. Dealer claims this is normal. Transmission difficlut to shift when hot. Dealer claims could not duplicate problem.
