Seven problems related to transmission slip out of gear have been reported for the 2000 Jeep Wrangler. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Intermittently the vehicle will jump out of first gear during engagement of the clutch. The failure leaves the vehicle in neutral. Merging into traffic can be a very dangerous when the gear shift jumps into neutral.
Transmission is hard to shift out of 2nd gear (almost to the point of being stuck) after the transmission has warmed up.
Vehicle will violently jump out of 1st gear upon acceleration. Dealer has replaced transmission once at 404 miles. Manufacturer did change supplier. The replaced transmission has excessive noise, and it is difficult to change gears when the vehicle is warmed up. The vehicle is defective.
Transmission is very noisey while in neutral and while shifting. Gets stuck in gear sometimes, and jumps out of first gear at times. "clunky" going from first to second gear and will roll in forward or reverse if you simulate putting vehicle in gear without touching any pedals, and it lurches forward when placing in gear from a stand still.
Transmission (5speed) jumps out of first gear all the time when starting from a standing start. Has done this since the night I picked up the vehicle. Dealership ask me to drive it for a few miles to see if it would clear up, it didn't. Has gotten me into trouble several times while trying to merge with traffic. You never know when it's going to happen.
Wiil not shift out on 2nd gear when hot-also noisey at idle out of gear.
Bought this Jeep with 18,000 miles and vehicle has jumpped out of 1st gear when shifting at least twice daily. Also when Jeep is parked on hill and parking brake set along with trans. In 1st gear the Jeep will slowly inch it's way down the hill. Both defects have come close to causing injury. Local dealer notified and after duplicating problem they claim they have no idea whats wrong and have refused to fix it. Jeep home office notified company unconcerned!!!.
