My 2009 Jeep Wrangler 4x4 has a issue regarding the air bag warning light. The light comes on intermittantly and the warning bell will go off. While I am driving. I am concerned that my air bag will not deploy when or if it is needed. I know this is a problem with theses Jeeps and wonder why no recall? I am told it could be a clockspring problem.
The air bag warning keeps going off, sometimes while just driving down the road and especially when turning the steering wheel. It is my understanding that under this condition the drivers air bag will fail to deploy. Has this been recalled or still under investigation ?.
Air bag light remains on, therefore the air bag may not deploy as intended in an accident. This is a known problem with the 'clock spring' as Jeep is recalling certain model years and not others - Jeep needs to recall and fix this safety issue on all Jeep models, not just a select few.
The contact owns a 2009 Jeep Wrangler. The contact stated that when the vehicle was started, the air bag warning light illuminated and a chime sounded. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the clock spring on the steering wheel needed to be replaced and that the airbags may not deploy in the event of a crash. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 75,000.
There is a known issue with the Jeep Wrangler clock spring in 2007+ models. Currently a recall has been issued for 2007 and 2008 left hand drive models, and 2007-2012 right hand drive models. A recall should be made for all model years and configurations as this issue can lead to the airbags not deploying in the event of a crash. The current recall is as follows: Chrysler is recalling certain model year 2008-2012 right hand drive (rhd) Jeep Wrangler vehicles manufactured from February 1, 2007, through October 10, 2011. Some vehicles may be equipped with driver's airbag clockspring assemblies that could experience a compromised airbag circuit resulting in an airbag lamp illumination, which indicates that the airbag may not deploy. Consequence: a broken electrical circuit in the airbag clockspring wiring assembly can lead to non-deployment of the driver frontal airbag and will not be able to properly protect the driver in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of injuries. Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners and remedy the vehicles as necessary free of charge. Chrysler will mail to owners an interim notification during March 2012. Owners may contact Chrysler at 1-800-853-1403. Notes: Chrysler's recall number is l37. Owners may also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's vehicle safety hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
Airbag light goes on/off while driving. Does not matter if turning, accelerating, etc. Reading prior threads, it looks like the clock spring under the horn is the issue. Concerned the airbag will not deploy if involved in a crash, and the light is on.
Starting on 12/23/2013, the airbag sensor dinged and became lit on dash, remains lit for about 8 seconds, dings and disappear only to reappear again with a ding in about 8 seconds. This repeats the entire time while driving. Contacted NW Jeep/Chrysler and they informed this writer it is likely the clock spring and the airbag will not deploy if needed. The dealership continued of a price around $250 to fix it. I find it hard to believe, knowing 07 and 08 Jeeps have this same issue, that this writer would be responsible for fixing a faulty sensor imperative for safety.
My air bag light came on (and continues to stay on for the past 2 days) while driving down the road recently. After checking with several sources, including Chrysler's recall dept. , I discovered that this is a common issue with Jeep Wranglers, but only a select few have been issued recall notices. This is apparently affecting a broader number of Jeeps than Chrysler has included in their initial recall (number l37). Until I can afford to fix this on my own, apparently my safety is at risk if my air bag fails to deploy during an accident. Faulty safety equipment should be the manufacturers responsibility.
Dealer diagnosed a failure in the clockspring circuit. Air bags will now not deploy in crash.
