36 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 09/27/2013

Driving down the road at approx 50mph, hit a small bump and the Jeep started to shake violently back and forth. I had to grab the wheel with both hands push on the break. I pulled to the side of the road, thinking my tire had fallen off (everything was still there). When I got home I did some research on the internet and found this is a common problem with Jeeps, they have labelled it "Jeep death wobble". I live in yosemite national park, which has windy roads with no guard rails. If this happens again while driving on tioga rd. I don't doubt it could end in a fatality. This "death wobble" now has me scared to drive my Jeep and I'm not the only Jeep owner that feels the same way.

37 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 07/12/2013

At highway speed (50-70 mph) vehicle would shake violently after hitting a bump. Vehicle needs to come to a complete stop to correct the wobble. After a little on line research, I discovered "death wobble. " service writers at both milosch palace Jeep and al deeby Jeep knew right away what I was talking about. I cannot believe there is not a safety recall for this. It seems everyone with knowledge of Jeeps is aware of the issue. This is very dangerous on highways\interstates, especially for inexperienced drivers, because the vehicle needs to come to a stop to in order to stop the wobble. I am sure no one really cares what I have to say, but Jeep is very dirty on this one. I am a 45 year mechanical engineer in the automotive field. Can someone please tell me why there has not been a safety recall for this?.

38 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 06/21/2013

I drove over a dip in the road at approximately 45mph and my car started shaking uncontrollably. I truly felt the car was coming apart and I would wreck. I let off the gas and the shaking stopped. I have since discovered the "death wobble" and feel this is exactly what happened to me.

39 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 04/24/2013

The contact owns a 2009 Jeep Wrangler. The contact stated that while driving 60 mph, the vehicle began to shake violently and caused the contact to lose control of the vehicle until the speed was reduced to 5 mph. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnosis and the contact was informed that some front end parts needed to be replaced. The contact was not aware of the specific parts that needed replacing. The vehicle was repaired however, the failure recurred. The vehicle was returned to the mechanic but the cause for the failure was not determined. The vehicle had not been repaired. The failure mileage was 90,000 and the current mileage was 103,000.

40 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 03/26/2013

While driving approximately 45mph I experienced a violet shaking of the steering wheel and could not control the vehicle until the speed slowed to approximately 15mph. I researched on the internet and someone said Jeep used a bolt smaller than the hole on a track bar that connects the front axle to the vehicle and this gets wallowed out and causes this.

41 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 03/08/2013

I was traveling at 65 mph when I heard a sound from the rear passenger side. I immediately pulled over to discover my tire was completely flat and the valve stem had come loose. This is the second time this has happened, the first was back in November. The time span for the latest incident was approx. 10-15 seconds. A rapid deflation. I had just put new tires on the Jeep in Nov. Now one of them is destroyed. I talked to two Jeep dealers since the event on 3/8/13. Both of them said that there is a problem with these parts failing in northern states due to corrosion and that if " I lived in California, this would not be an issue. " I was offered new rubber tmps stems for $433. 00. Not satisfactory. I feel I was lucky that this was not a front tire!.

42 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2013

While driving my Jeep Wrangler 2009, I hit a bump in the road and the car went into the death wobble - violently shaking from side-to-side. The only way to stop it was to slow down or come to a near stop and then continue. It does this very often now - usually starts somewhere between 35-55 mph and just after hitting a bump.

43 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 02/20/2013

Every time since February when I hit a bump the Jeep starts shaking violently. I keep hearing of it being the Jeep death wobble. It has torn up my tires and affected many parts and now I can not even hit a bump at 30 mph without it starting to shake. Not sure what to do to fix. I called my dealer to see what they suggested and they had never heard of the Jeep death wobble which Chrysler had apparently sent out a notice to all companies about it. I have heard of several complaints on this. My Jeep is stock and never been modified and never been taken off road. It is a family vehicle and now I just want to get rid of it!.

44 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 02/06/2013

I have experience what is commonly referred to as the "wrangler death wobble" on over three occasions. These are dangerous situations where the steering begins to wobble uncontrollably side to side. The violence of the wobble increases quickly making it tough to hold onto the steering wheel and maintain control, especially if this occurs in multi-lane roads. Increasing speed results in the wobble becoming more violent. The only way to recover is to brake quickly and bring your vehicle to a near stop (at least under 5 mph) before the wobbling subsides. The "death wobble" appears to be brought on by the Jeep tires hitting a pot hole, railroad crossing, or other rough spots in the road at a slight angle. Usually around 35+ mph. Faster speeds, such as highway (55-75) do not seem to create the issue but accelerating to enter a highway does, and has in my case as you pass between 30-40mph. To recover the driver aggressively apply the brakes (without warning to those behind them) as the wobble severity increases quickly. This creates a safety issue. The wobble also has an adverse affect on the steering dampers which soon begin leaking fluids from the violent wobbles.

45 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 01/18/2013

I was driving on the interstate going 65 mph and all of a sudden the Jeep started shaking uncontrollably. I thought I was going to wreck and I was in a panic. I slowed down to an unsafe speed to make it stop. Then I exited and checked the vehicle out to my surprise everything was fine. So I got back on the road and continued on. Then I had to exit and it started doing it again. This time is was so violent I thought I was going to go off the exit and crash. I have never had a lift on my Jeep or anything it is all manufacture parts. I believe with all my heart that Jeep has made a faulty front end. When I contacted them they said they didn't know how to fix it. Please recall this it is very dangerous and going to get someone killed.

46 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 11/09/2012

While driving my vehicle down the interstate for about 10 min at a speed of about 72miles per hr, my Jeep started shaking from the front and back. It was so intense I felt as though I was going to crash. I have had tires blow and u joints go bad and this didn't compare. I don't drive in a rough terrain and not often at these speeds. But I felt as though I had no control. When I decelerated to 50 the shaking had stopped. There had been no previous warning of this problem. When taking it in to get looked at the dealer said there was nothing wrong. The next day I took it in for the same problem and my universals need replaced, axle seals are bad and my drive shaft needs to be replace.

47 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 10/15/2012

The whole Jeep started shaking violently, and the steering wheel was difficult to hold on to. Had to slow down almost to a stop before the shaking stopped. My Jeep is stock, and the dealer has replaced the trackbar which seemed to help for a while, but it's back again.

48 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 10/09/2012

Driving on the highway and the vehicle started to shake uncontrollably. You have to slow down to a dangerous speed if you cant pull over right away to stop. The car shakes as if it is falling apart. This has happened on several occasions and we brought it to our mechanic. They informed us that it was the steering dampner and it needed to be replaced and that it is happening to Jeeps all over and that chryler is not covering repairs. After my mechanic fixed the steering dampner, they test drove it and found the shake to still be there and did further investigating. They found that most of the parts in the steering system were damaged, ie. Tie rods and steering drag link. I am bringing the vehicle to my Jeep dealer and have informed Chrysler of the situation. I am hoping that they will replace the bad parts but do not have a good feeling.

49 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 09/27/2012

I was driving the Jeep down the highway through construction zone and it vibrated violently after I drove over a bump. I had to slow down very quickly during rush hour and was almost hit in the rear by another care so the wabble would go away. I took it to have it fixt and was told this is common. I looked it up online and was amazed. For a newer vehicale I was floored that it was not covered by Jeep. I have an extended warranty too. I took it to Jeep and they told me I had to pay to fix it, so what was I going to do drive and unsafe car (and it is unsafe, another car almost hit me). I paid to have it fixed. They replaced a damper and guess what there is still a wabble. This is the most rediculas issue and yet Jeep will not stand behind a poor design that they clearly know is a problem. So, I am looking for help making it know that if there is an accident involving this problem I have advised Jeep and now NHTSA. I will surely contact an attorney and become very public that there has been warning of this. All I want is for my wife and kids to be safe in a car. Jeep should step up and correct there problem.

50 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 07/30/2012

Tl-the contact owns a 2009 Jeep Wrangler 4dr 4x4. While driving approximately 50 mph, the front end of the vehicle began to shake violently. The failure occurred whenever driving over a bump. The vehicle was maneuvered to the side of the road and inspected. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer who informed that the front end linkage and rack bar would need to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the problem. The approximate failure mileage was 22,000. Js.

51 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 07/26/2012

While driving at 55 mph on a slight turning radius, the right front started to vibrate, then it went to the left side, back to the left side, back and forth. Each time it transferred, it increased. The severity of the wobble effect. I had to put a "death grip" on the steering wheel to maintain control of the vehicle. The only way that I could stop the "death wobble" was to pull off the road and stop the vehicle. It was like a demon took control of the vehicle. The next day the vehicle did the same thing while I was driving with my daughter(age 29). This time on a straight section of road going at 45 mph. She thought that the tire fell off! again, the only way that I was able to stop the wobble was to stop the vehicle. Both of these incidents could have ended in serious accidents! this is a well maintained stock vehicle with balanced tires.

52 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2012

Vehicle would occasionally experience a violent shaking from the front wheels when traveling approximately 50-60 mph. Seemed to typically be initiated by small bump in the road. Only way to stop the shaking was to almost come to a complete stop - less than 10 mph. Took vehicle to mechanic who determined the steering stabilizer was defective.

53 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 05/09/2012

Violent front wheels wobble after hitting a bump on a road.

54 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 03/15/2012

I live in sacramento, California. I experienced what is being referred to as "wrangler death wobble" on or about 11:55 p. M. On March 15, 2012, while I driving southbound on interstate 5 near east los angeles. This incident resulted in and substantial physical damage to the undercarriage/suspension/steering components of the vehicle. The weld of the track bar housing/bracket on the axle side was ripped completely off of the front axle. There was a total loss of control of the vehicle. It took about 30 seconds to bring it under control by applying brakes and holding on to the violently shaking steering wheel. The car swerved into adjacent lanes. Fortunately, there were no cars next to me a the time. I purchased the 2009 Wrangler from folsom lake Ford in folsom, CA on January 28, 2012, only 46 days before I experienced the Wrangler death wobble. The track bar housing was re-welded to the axle and a gusset added in los angeles to allow me to return home. I incurred significant costs for repairs. Two expert technicians have examined the suspension and concluded that there is no question the defect existed when I purchased the vehicle and that the obvious defect and "play" should have been detected by routine visual inspection. Folsom lake Ford v. P. Of operations, john sears refuses to even inspect the vehicle to see whether it is now safe to drive or take any action at all to fix the damage. [xxx] has stated in writing that my only recourse is to take legal action against folsom lake Ford. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

55 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 03/14/2012

After hitting a pot hole Jeep started to shake violently, would not stop until it came to a complete stop. It has happened several time since.

56 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2012

Death wobble as shown on websites, going 50 or so miles per hour , front end wobbles uncontrollably!! uncontrollable, extremely unsafe at time ,when shaking and wobble starts!!! has almost caused an accident on each of the <<<3>>> times this has occurred!!! why is NHTSA and Jeep waiting for people to be killed before something is done to help everyone on the highway with this obvious safety issue??? very scary and frustrating. Think of your family's life as well as all of us!!! we are all at risk . How many lives need to be lost????.

57 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 02/22/2012

My wife had just taken our 2009 Jeep Wrangler to the dealership for routine maintenance, which included an oil change and tire rotation. On her way home from the dealership the vehicle started shaking dramatically so she pulled off the road and called me. I told her that if the tires were rebalanced then a weight might have fallen off causing one of the tires to be out of balance and told her to try and drive it home at a slow speed. She was able to get the vehicle home and the shaking did not happen again. A couple days later she took the Jeep back to the dealer and asked them to recheck the tire balancing. They indicated that one of the tires was out of balance so they fixed it and we thought the problem was solved. A couple weeks later I was driving the Jeep at about 55mph when we hit a small bump in the road and it started a rather violent shaking and wobbling in the front end of the vehicle. I had to slow down significantly to regain control of the vehicle. My wife took it back to the dealership and they drove the vehicle but said they were unable to get it to duplicate the shaking and they indicated that there might be a problem with the drive shaft. I started driving the vehicle more often in order to take note of all the conditions present when the shaking occurs and to try to diagnose the problem. I was surprised when I started to research it on the internet and immediately found several websites discussing a condition referred to as a "death wobble". The symptons described are precisely what we have experienced. There is a violent shaking and wobbling of the vehicle and you have to slow down immediately to regain control. Our Jeep is stock and no after-market modifications have been made to the suspension system. I consider this to be a significant safety issue that needs to be addressed immediately.

58 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 02/15/2012

Esp/bas check engine light on, took it to the dealership, they said it was a bad clock spring, they fixed it since it was just under the 50k mile warranty, three weeks later I was over the 50k warranty and the light came on again, took it back and it was the clock spring again dealership fixed it again then a bit over a year later it went again, I don't go off roading or anything crazy now I have to drop 600 bucks (parts+labor) to fix it again in order to make sure the airbag goes off in the event of an accident crazy this is not a recall yet, a common Jeep problem that effects airbags and suspension.

59 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 01/25/2012

Driving down the road and I hit a unleveled surfaced Jeep went jumping all over the road. I thought it was a fluke and didn't think about it later. But it is continuing to get worse. I have a appt. Tuesday with dealership and they don't know if my warranty will cover this. I didn't know anything about this death wobble until the service man told me it sounded like I have the death wobble. Why is there not a recall on this? this is my only vehicle so I don't have a choice but drive it. This is a severe safety issue!!!!!!!!.

60 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 01/17/2012

The vehicle's suspension and steering became uncontrollable when driving 60 mph and I hit a small bump in the road. This is commonly known as the Jeep death wobble. I was unable to control Jeep until I slammed on my brakes and brought the Jeep to under 40 mph or a complete stop.

61 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 12/04/2011

I experienced a classic "death wobble" as described on Jeep problems. Com. Extreme shaking from side to side and loss of ability to steer until I slowed down below 20 mph.

62 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 09/10/2011

While driving on interstate 95 in a 2009 Jeep Wrangler unlimited (stock) approximately 60 miles into a trip the vehicle hit a defect in the roadway at 65mph and we experienced servere death wobble, ie the front of the vehicle started shaking so violently that it was not steerable. When slowed to 30mph the car returned to normal and we stopped to check the front componets nothing was broken or appeared to be askew. As we continued our trip we encounted the same condition/problem 5 more times at speeds of anywhere from 55-70 mph and this did not happen everytime we hit a bump/pothole only on some. After this condition happened for the 3rd time I jacked up the front end and checked thelugs again nothing visual showed why this was happening. We had to cancel our trip at that time due to this safety concern. The 4th and 5th times were on what was supposed to be the return home however we eventually had to park the vehicle until it could be looked at again. ( my best guess is that the dealer will again say there is no problem) this vehicle was recently serviced by a dealer and after they were told that we had this problem when going over railroad tracks at 40 mph. They could not recreate the problem and told us that there was no defects in the front suspension. In addition 3 days prior to this trip we also had the tires and wheels rotated and balanced to see if this would fix this condition which I had never experieced ( however owning a Jeep vehicles for 24 years I have experienced death wobble before but not like this) but my wife had.

63 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 07/05/2011

At 55 mph on interstate 35 south of 635 in dallas my 2009 Jeep Wrangler ( with 28,000 miles ) unlimited's steering and front suspension started shaking uncontrollably upon driving across the section of the highway where the road and overpass seam meets . . . I had to slow to 35mph to get the wobbling and shaking to stop. I have now had this re-occur at least 10 times in less than 2000 miles with 6 services visits in 2000 miles! on the fourth visit to the Jeep dealer the service agent actually wrote that I was experiencing the Jeep "death wobble" !! what?!? the issue actually has a name called the "death wobble, that a Chrysler Jeep service agent uses???? my first visit was to ntb tire to get the tires, rotated and balanced, then two weeks later after the second, same incident, I took it the last 5 times to huffines Jeep dealer where they , balanced the tires 3 more times , did an alignment, tightened the front suspension and replaced the steering stabilizer twice?!? I now video taped the car shaking profusely on hwy35 9/12/11 45 miles after the last service visit . . No class action, no recall, how do I sell this defective car with carfax and not take a huge loss on this manufacturer defect lemon?.

64 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2011

While driving down the highway @ roughly 55 mph, my 2009 Jeep Wrangler hit a small bump in the road. My steering wheel began violently shaking side to side. I immediately pushed on the brake and tried to safely slow the vehicle without causing the vehicle behind me to crash into me. I pulled-over to the shoulder. This vibration referred to as "death wobble" occurs each and every time I am traveling between 55 and 60 mph and, I brake or hit a bump in the road. It is an awful sensation.

65 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 12/01/2010

The contact owns a 2009 Jeep Wrangler. The contact stated that while driving 65 mph, he drove over a road bump and the vehicle shook violently. The failure recurred approximately 14,000 miles later. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and offered no assistance. The contact also stated that various dealers offered no assistance. The failure recurred repeatedly. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 13,000.

66 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 10/14/2010

Jeep front end begins to voilently shaking causing loss of control when crossing highway seams, small bumps, etc especially when tires hit them one tire at a time. Jeep must be stopped to correct shaking. No modifications completely stock. Dealer claims everything is good with vehicle and in proper working order. Has happened multiple times over and over.

67 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2010

The contact owns a 2009 Jeep Wrangler. The contact stated that while driving over 40 mph, the entire vehicle began to shake uncontrollably. The contact stated that the front end of the vehicle shook violently. The accelerator pedal had to be released in order for the contact to regain control of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer several times for the failure. The front suspension bushing was replaced. Also, the contact had an independent mechanic perform a front end alignment however, the failure was not corrected. The vehicle continued to shake violently. The manufacturer was made a ware of the failure. The failure mileage was 40,000 and the current mileage was 64,000. The VIN was not available.

68 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 09/08/2010

I bought my 2009 Jeep Wrangler around October, November 2009, used with about 16,000 miles from world car Nissan with a one hundred thousand mile warranty. The Jeep came with an after market lift kit of approx 4 inches with 33 inch toyo open country tires "rancho shocks, sky jacker lift" world car told me the Jeep came like this originally from the dealer. World car encouraged me to take the Jeep and test drive it for a couple of days. After returning the Jeep I told them that I liked the Jeep but it had handling issues on the road. While test driving the Jeep on normal roads I noticed the Jeep would track hard and pull to the left and to the right almost causing me to run off the road on multiple occasions. World car said they would check out the front end alignment and balance the tires. I purchased the Jeep. When picking up the Jeep they told me they took care of all the problems. Jeep assured me the handling issues were due to the lift and larger tires. About two weeks later leaving work I turned a corner and my right front tire started klunking and wobbling. The right front tire was missing 4 of 5 lug nuts and had one broken stud. Only one lug nut was holding my tire on. The Jeep had to be towed. World car gave me a loaner car, repaired the problem, with no apology and no explanation. Around July 2009, I drove to port arkansas texas, I drove to the beach. I only drove in the normal traffic lanes no four wheeling. The next week on Friday while driving down ih 35 the vehicle suddenly jerked to the left almost causing me to have an accident. On Saturday I noticed the right rear shock hanging down. The upper shock support pin was broken off. Jeep accused me of four wheeling and abusing the Jeep, they repaired it at no cost to me. Some times the traction control system comes on pre-maturely while making corners making the Jeep hard to handle. Now the esp bas light came on and stays on. On Jeepforum. Com esp bas failure appears to be a common problem.

69 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 04/19/2010

As the Jeep was brought up to speed it began shaking violently and out of control as the speed approached 50 mph. The shaking continued as I braked to a stop. The vehicle is unsafe to operate with this "death wobble". The problem is repeatable and happens at the same speed occasionally when bumps are hit.

70 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 03/13/2010

I was driving my 2009 Jeep Wrangler at speed of 45 mph and it started to shake violently from side to side. The steering wheel was shaking also and it took alot to keep the Jeep in control. Had to pull the car to the side of the road. It seem to stop after I pulled over and I slowly drove home the rest of the way. My concern is this seems to be a common problem for Jeeps and there are many videos on the internet. Why hasn't there been a recall and no reports of this problem. I have less than 14,000 miles on this Jeep and it is only a year old. I also had my mother and 15 yr old son with me and can confirm this incident.
