Last week, I drove over highway expansion joints while traveling at highway speed. My steering wheel began to shake violently and the entire front end began to shimmy and wobble. I immediately moved from the passing lane, through the center lane, to the far right lane. There, after reducing speed, the shaking stopped. I experienced this same problem this week while traveling on interstates at highway speed, 5 times within the same trip. The shaking began after hitting a seemingly small imperfection in the road. The first time, the wobbling and shaking must have been visible from the exterior as the car behind me dropped back and those to the right of me cleared the way for me to move over. The other four times were not as severe and the shaking stopped after I reduced speed. I called the Jeep dealership and spoke with the service department from the road to see if they had heard of this problem and to see if the car was safe to drive. The service rep claimed to have never heard of this issue and attributed it to a tire balance problem, although I assured him it was not. When I arrived at my destination, I researched the issue on the internet and found a problem called "Jeep death wobble" that perfectly describes my experiences. Videos posted on youtube also matched what had occurred. I plan to take my Jeep in for service when I return home. Date listed below is most recent incident and the day I contacted the dealership.
