Cyber safety alert - bad software unlocks all doors 100x /day countermanding driver input: please make this a recall to force them to fix this very dangerous occupant safety problem. Car has been to 2 dealers 4 x total, they keep saying its unfixable. Kia cust service refuse to do anything. (kia case #[xxx], ) daytona beach dealer refuses refund or replacement car. Is there any way for someone from NHTSA to contact kia in korea and get some action on fixing the software door unlock 100x / day problem ? there are 4 diff situations in which the doors unlock creating a very unsafe situation for crime/carjacking/ and worse. 2014 kia Sedona ex VIN # [xxx] its should be a simple software update fix to alleviate the problem : unlocks without driver permission when: 1. Put in park 2. Key out 3. Key in 4. If you want to warm up car while loading cargo/people it constantly countermands the driver instruction to lock doors, this goes like this: driver pushed lock button , it unlocks all doors w/o permission, drive again pushes lock, it immediately unlocks all doors again, repeats over and over and over infinitely . . . In this day /age of terrorism, crime, kidnapping, etc. . . Its imperative that NHTSA and citizens get these situations solved so that at least the driver can know the doors stay locked when the lock button is pushed and that the computer won't constantly veto driver efforts for security. Thanks>. . Please so something < anything!>. . Kia cust service refuses to do anything except read from a script. Kia headquarters in korea seem not to have contact # information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

15 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2007 Kia Motor Sedona

Failure Date: 06/08/2011

Occasionally, the power sliding door on the drivers side closes and then reopens about 6-12" and has to be closed by hand. There have been several times when the same door opens all the way and it can't be closed, either by power or by hand. It will remain open until it gets ready for you to close it. The time frame varies but usually 10-15 minutes. Several times, while driving with all of the doors closed and locked, the same sliding door will open a couple of inches and I have to stop and manually close it. The van has been in the shop several times and each of the described incidents still happen from time to time. The repair technicians cannot duplicate the problem so no corrective action can be taken. It's just a matter of time before someone falls out of the vehicle while it is moving and is either severely injured of killed.

17 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2006 Kia Motor Sedona

Failure Date: 05/05/2011

On may 5, 2011, I was driving my 2006 kia Sedona. My 2 children (age 2 and 7) and my mother were in the car. All of a sudden, the left passenger sliding door opened on it's own accord. I was frazzled on how this may have happened as the car has great safety ratings which is why I purchased it Aug. 2006. I was so upset as this is a safety issue that needs to get addressed immediately. I called major service in lic, NY and they set up an appt for mon. 5/9/11. When I brought the car for service, I learned that this is a voluntary recall. I do not define this as a voluntary recall especially when you have your children present in the car when this occurs. They explained to me that the part had to be ordered because it is on back order. Such a recall should first not be voluntary and second should not be on back order. It is now 2 weeks later and I am still waiting for the part. I called kia and they informed me that they will call the service manager and expedite the order. Meanwhile, I need to take my son to school and daughter to the babysitter, so I tied a rope to the door to avoid the door from fully opening while driving. I also have to hear the annoying beep notifying me that the a door is open. I am putting my children at risk for kia's negligence. Need this corrected immediately.

The vehicle was taken back to the dealer, but the technician was unable to diagnose the failure and stated that the doors were operating as designed. The vehicle was not repaired a second time. The approximate failure mileage was 39,000.

21 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2006 Kia Motor Sedona

Failure Date: 03/19/2011

We own a 2006 kia Sedona, bought used. The power sliding doors have malfunctioned numerous times. Once on the driver side, and now we are on the third repair for the passenger power sliding door in less than a year. The occurrences are random. The door will not close or latch whether we do it manually or use the power buttons. There is no warning; it just stops working. There are numerous complaints from other consumers about the exact same issue. This is very much a safety related issue, not just an inconvenience. At what point does a complaint stop being a service bulletin and become a product recall? the last repairs we had were covered under warranty, however, warranty does not last forever and it does not seem like the repairs are working for us or other consumers. This is clearly a product defect and not an issue of normal wear and tear. Consumers that are experiencing this same problem should not be obligated to have any out-of-pocket expenses related to what is an obvious product defect. Thankfully, there have not been any reported injuries or deaths that I was able to find. My hope is that kia is not waiting for that to occur to issue a product recall.

25 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2008 Kia Motor Sedona

Failure Date: 09/28/2010

In 18 months my 2008 kia Sedona has continuous electrical problems, with this complaint focusing on the fact my vehicle has blown the 200 amp main fuse 4 times in 18 months, including while driving the vehicle 2 of the 4 times, causing complete loss of power and a safety issue as both times it happen while highway driving, with the dealer not being to determine the cause of the problem each and every time. They replace the fuse, run tests, and give the car back, at which point anywhere from 10 days to 6 months the fuse blows again. Note this same vehicle was in and out of the dealer repair for a check engine light they were unable to turn off for more than 48 hours at a time (computer reset) for 9 months which I sued under lemon law for.

26 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2006 Kia Motor Sedona

27 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2006 Kia Motor Sedona

Failure Date: 08/02/2010

We have a 2006 kia Sedona, with powered sliding side doors. We had our three grand kids with us, all under 6 and the side door would not close. It would go shut, and then open without locking. We were told by the dealer that there was a bad electronic switch. The problem: there was no manual overide to this problem. I had to drive it in the shop by jamming the door manually, and even then it came open several times on my trip to the dealer. If we had been in a severe thunderstorm, or a blizzard, we could have been in real trouble. There must be an overide for this. I pulled the fuses, but that did not help. The dealer is don sealye Ford, kalamazoo, michigan.

28 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2007 Kia Motor Sedona

Failure Date: 06/17/2010

2007 kia Sedona [xxx]normal vehicle usage. While driving the passenger side power sliding door will open without operator interaction, resulting in an unsafe condition. Typically the power siding door is closed using one of two power buttons, first in overhead console for driver the second is located next to the passenger on the body frame. Without notice the door will open while driving down the road. Occasionally the non-latched door warning will light up followed by the warning ell and then the door is open. The power button is disabled to allow the door to be closed manually and the same scenario will occur. Vehicle taken to dealership for repair, indicating that didn't have correct parts, and need to order. Must still operate vehicle in this condition. Similar incident within the past year with door on other side of vehicle, don't recall exact date or fix performed by dealership. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

29 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2006 Kia Motor Sedona

Failure Date: 03/17/2010

While driving my 2006 kia Sedona on the highway the rear passenger sliding door opened by itself with my child seated next to it in her car seat. After numerous attempts at trying to close the door by the power switches, I had to push the door closed manually. I got in my vehicle and drove to a nearby parking lot to move my child's car seat to the other side. I contacted my dealership to let them know I was on my way and gave an explanation of the issue. I was asked to wait until the next day, that they were busy and already had people waiting. I explained that I had my child in the car and was told perhaps I could use the vehicle without her in the car, but that they probably would not get a chance to fix the problem today. I expressed my disappointment and told him I would be coming now to the dealership as soon as I could get there. The door continued to open throughout my 30 minute drive to the nearest kia dealership, leaving me to pull over and, again, manually try to close the door. This occurred 6 times. On pulling into the dealership parking lot, which is down a small hill, the door again slid open and closed. I was told by the mechanic that it was a mechanical problem with the latch on the sliding door. That the vehicles computer system does not recognize a broken latch as it is a mechanical part. I was told that the car looks at the open latch as if someone wants the door to open, not understanding that it could be a defect of the part itself. The part was replaced and I paid out of pocket for the expenses, as my limited warranty had expired. When I asked the dealership if this was a common problem, I was told that they had seen it before, but would not call this issue common. My concern is for the safety of my child. My choice in this vehicle was made based on safety. This defect of the latch on the door is not safe. And, common or not, must be addressed.

30 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2006 Kia Motor Sedona

Failure Date: 03/12/2010

The following is copy of a complaint I filed on 3/13 with kia regarding my 2006 kia Sedona minivan, which I bought brand new on Jan. 11, 2007. "this past week I was having trouble with my van sliding doors closing all the way. On 3/9 the passenger sliding door flew open when I made a sharp turn while my sons were sitting in the middle seats. I thought it was just a fluke but on 3/12 as I was driving during rush hour on the high way and hit a bump, the driver side door flew open while my son was sitting in the middle seat. I freaked out completely at the horror of it and then pulled over, shut the door, and held it as I drove straight to my kia dealer. I was relieved the nightmare was over and that we made it safely until I was told that my warranty expired at 60,000 miles (I am at 71,000) and that it would cost me 423. 67$ to have my van safe for my children again. I expressed my anger to the service manager who explained that his hands were tied by the warranty. I tried to call kia customer service but it was closed. I am absolutely outraged that instead of being grateful that we made it safely and that I am not suing kia if the unthinkable had happened, that kia has taken this opportunity to charge me to fix their mistake. It is obvious that the latch is faulty because latches don't just wear after 3 years, and the mileage on the vehicle has nothing to do with the wear and tear of the latch. It is a cheap and faulty latch, and kia made me pay for their incompetence. Furthermore, I just CO-signed for my son to buy his 1st new vehicle from this same kia dealership and I am now hoping against hope that I didn't sign him into a death trap! it is absolutely absurd that a customer with a barely over 3-year-old vehicle should have this issue. I have had other minivans with 100,000 miles and never did a door fly open while I was driving.

31 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2009 Kia Motor Sedona

Failure Date: 01/01/2010

Passenger sliding door on my 2009 kia Sedona is very hard to open. It has been since we got it. Sometimes the door gets stuck and will not open at all from the inside. Someone has to get out another door and open it from the outside. On one occasion the dealer's mechanic told us to open the door slower - it still got stuck. On another occasion the manager of the dealership sat in the van and after playing with the door showed us how to open it by pulling on the handle two times and pushing very hard on it. The dealer wouldn't do any work to the door. It continued to get stuck frequently and when it does open it is only after we push on it very hard. We took it to another dealer who at least tried to lubricate the doors. It seems to get stuck less frequently but is still hard to open and sticks once in a while. The 2nd dealer wrote on invoice "door would not open even with excessive force". I feel this is a safety issue as my children might not be able to get the door open in an emergency. The manufacturer was notified of this in July.

Failure Date: 10/06/2009

In early oct 2009 the driver side rear door of our 2006 kia Sedona would not close. It was as if the lock was stuck in the locked position. We had it fixed at the kia dealership. Then in Dec 2009 the passenger side back door had the same issue. We again had it fixed at the kia dealership.

34 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2002 Kia Motor Sedona

Door handles, passengers and driver, front and back. Handles in the front have both been replaced once, and the new ones are now defective and will not open from the inside. Rear passenger door handles are broken on the outside. If the vehicle was in an accident and needed to be exited quickly, or entered quickly, this poses a safety problem.

35 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2006 Kia Motor Sedona

Failure Date: 09/08/2008

August 12, 2008 after picking my children, 8yrs old and 4 years old up from the babysitter both sliding doors would shut and reopen on their own. I was able to get to finally get both doors shut by shutting off the electronics of the door. However when I left my babysitters and the first right turn I made the driver side sliding door flew open, while my son was sitting there. I called kia in fort wayne, my car was towed the next day and returned to me on the 13th with the passenger side control module replace. The driver side sliding part was on back order. On sept. 3, 2008 my drivers side sliding door control module was replaced. Here it is September 8, 2008 and the driver side passenger door is doing this again. I called kia in fort wayne and they can get Mar car in on Wednesday. Kia fort wayne I feel has done everything they can as far as replacing the part, but this door is coming open while I'm driving, because something is seriously wrong. I have video recorded this door no latching at the time it happened on September 8th. I hope that kia seriously looks into this major safety issue. I work in the automotive industry and can honestly I am disgusted in how kia is handling this safety issue. . Read more...
